The relation between man and animals dates back as far as prehistoric era. From that period
animals were worshipped, domesticated, hunted and killed. The relationship between man and
animal had led to development of what we called “Zoo “.Here we are learn to make a relation
between man and animal and also know habit, habitat and ethological feature of this particularanimal.
A zoological garden is also introducing with a particular faunal feature that is located on this area
and it is also a good act to conserve the endangered species.

History -
The history of the Zoological Garden, Alipore dates back as far as 1842. In 1842, Dr. John McCleland
the Curator, Bengal Asiatic Society’s Museum formulated a plan For establishment of Zoological
Garden in Calcutta which was published in the Calcutta Journal of Natural History entitled “Proposal
to form a Zoological Garden in Calcutta” But they said plan did not attract any notice at that time.
Dr. Joseph Bart Fayrer, the then President of Asiatic Society of Bengal formulated another
plan in 1867 for establishment of a zoo. The plan had immense impact on the public, But due to
non-availability of suitable site, the said plan could not be materialized.
In 1873, Carl Louis Schwendler, Postmaster to the Government of India submitted a suitable
plan for establishing a zoological garden. Due to non-availability of suitable site, the Said plan was
kept in abeyance.
Finally, in 1875, the then Lt. Government of Bengal, Sir Richard Temple constituted a
committee to find out a suitable site for establishing a zoological garden. The said Committee chose
the land on each side of the Alipore Road leading from Zerrut Bridge to Belvedere.
The site was approved by the Lt. Governor of Bengal on 24th September, 1875.

Commitment -
I remember that a zoological survey is essentially needed who is study under in Zoology or related subject.
Because, in this year 2013 many students and persons can’t know about the essentiality of wild animal. As
result many wild animals are in endanger, vulnerable, extinct or rare. Example in the year 1910,
approximate 50,000 tigers are belong in hole India and in the year 2009, approximate 200 tiger are belong
in hole India but a tiger is leaded a good carnivore role of environment. In absent of tiger the carnivore
role cannot leaded betterly to the environment. In the Zoological Garden or other wild life conservationcenter a student can understand practically about essentiality of a animal. And a learned student can be
learn another about this act.
One other side it has introduced practically about the study material that we has read theoretical in the
past time. It is also introduced about Ethno zoology, Phylogenic taxonomy, Species concept, Ecological
value of this animal.
