The Phoenix Herpetological Society pays a visit to Tesseract School in Scottsdale

zona: What did you learn about when the Herpetological Society came to visit your class? HannaH: I learned a lot of new facts about reptiles: How reptiles catch and consume their prey, their enemies, and other interesting facts about reptiles. The most important thing I learned was the difference between poisonous and venomous. zona: What is your favorite reptile? Why? HannaH: My favorite reptile was Donnie, the Tiger Reticulated Python. Besides being giant, it was amazing to see such a large snake in our classroom. zona: If one of the reptiles had escaped and ran around your school, where do you think they would go? What would they do at your school for the day? HannaH: Depending on the reptile, if it was a reptile that likes to burrow it might hide in the sandbox. Other reptiles might hide in empty cabinets or boxes. The reptiles might be scared and hide in one place because it might see all the students as predators. zona: What is your favorite thing about Tesseract? HannaH: I love the learning community and being able to work together. I love all the first hand experiences instead of using just text books. I love being able to express our creativity in different ways. I enjoy all the presentations and projects. zona: What is your favorite subject in school and why? HannaH: Math is my favorite, because it is a way of challenging my brain and getting to learn new ways to do things when you thought there was only one way to do it. zona: Do you have any hobbies? HannaH: I just started practicing volleyball because I want to be on the middle school team next year and I ride English horses. zona: What is your favorite book? Fave movie? HannaH: My favorite books are the Hunger Game series and the Harry Potter series because both series are so well written and I love how the authors use foreshadowing. My favorite movies is Modern Times (the Charlie Chaplin movie) because it was very funny and clever. zona: If you could have any super power what would it be? HannaH: If I could have a superpower it would be to fly because I am always late to things. If I could fly I could be on time or perhaps early.

zona: What did you learn about when the Herpetological Society came to visit your class? rylan: I learned that not all reptiles eat meat, some reptiles eat plants. I learned that some reptiles do not make good pets because it is difficult to mimic their environment. zona: What was your favorite thing about having reptiles in your classroom? rylan: I really like being able to hold and touch the reptiles, except the venomous reptiles. zona: What is your favorite reptile? Why? rylan: My favorite reptile was the Woma Python. It was my favorite reptile because it was very smooth and calm. zona: If one of the reptiles had escaped and ran around your school, where do you think they would go? rylan: It depends on the reptile, but if it was a small snake it would find a small corner. The reptile would hide, avoid people and look for small rodents. zona: What is your favorite subject in school and why? rylan: My favorite subject is Themes because we get to work on projects and learn in a hands-on way. zona: Do you have any hobbies? rylan: I like to play soccer, football, rest and read books. zona: What is your favorite book? Fave movie? Fave television show? rylan: My favorite book is the I Survived series. My favorite movie is the Rise of the Planet of the Apes. My favorite television show is Monster Energy Motor Cross Race. zona: If you could have any super power what would it be? rylan: I would like to be able to fly to see the views from above.

zona: What did you learn about when the Herpetological Society came to visit your class? Gavin: I learned that the difference between a turtle and tortoise is that a turtle has webbed feet because a turtle needs to be able to swim. zona: What was your favorite thing about having reptiles in your classroom? Gavin: My favorite was being able to see and touch the animals while you learned about them. zona: What is your favorite reptile? Why? Gavin: My favorite reptile was the Tegu, because I saw shows about the Tegu before. zona: If one of the reptiles had escaped and ran around your school, where do you think they would go? Gavin: It would go to the recess field because it is outside. The reptile would look for food. zona: What is your favorite thing about Tesseract? Gavin: We get the opportunity to be close to animals during our reptile project. zona: What is your favorite subject in school and why? Gavin: My favorites subject is math because I use it a lot and it helps me a lot. zona: Do you have any hobbies? Gavin: My hobbies are football, soccer, and drawing. zona: What is your favorite book? Fave movie? Fave television show? Gavin: My favorite book is Diary of a Wimpy Kid. My favorite movie is Diary of Wimpy Kid. My favorite T.V. show is a Pair of King. zona: If you could have any super power what would it be? Gavin: I would fly so if someone throws a football really high I could get it.

zona: Do you feel special being the first graduating class ever

at Tesseract? morGan: Yes, I feel special being a part of the

first graduating class at Tesseract because I have the opportunity

to leave a legacy at our school. zona: What is the H.O.P.E.

Club? morGan: H.O.P.E. Club stands for Helping Other People

Endure. It allows students to become more involved in philanthropic

work and helps raise awareness to problems that are occurring inside

our community. zona: How did you get involved and what exactly do

you do? morGan: I became involved in philanthropic work in sixth grade when I was part

of the National Charity League. From there, I found that philanthropic work was my true

passion in life. I decided to start volunteering on my own and then decided to help others get

involved. I volunteer at many different places including homeless shelters, nurseries, and food

banks. zona: What did H.O.P.E. Club do for the Crisis Nursery in December? morGan:

In December, H.O.P.E. Club decorated Crisis Nursery for Christmas. We collected numerous

decorations, then went to Crisis Nursery everyday to set up the decorations, and finally

hosted a Christmas Party for the children. zona: How did it feel to brighten Christmas for

a bunch of kids? morGan: It felt amazing to brighten Christmas for a bunch of children.

These children have been through so much that any little happiness we can provide for them

makes such a difference. It was a lot of hard work, but well worth it in the end. zona: Why

is your school so cool? morGan: My school is so cool because it allows the students to be

independent. The teachers do not limit you in what you can do, as long as you have a goal,

and then you can do it. zona: What are you going to miss about Tesseract? morGan: I

am going to miss the unique classroom experience we have at Tesseract. You truly receive

personalized learning in the small classroom environment. zona: We heard that Tesseract

has a program that starts college counseling in your Freshmen year. How did this help you

with your college choices? morGan: It helped me because if I ever had any questions, the

college counselor was always there to answer them for me. Since the college counselor knew

me so well, she chose schools that were right for me. zona: What did you decide? Where

are you going to college? What are you majoring in? morGan: I am going to attend Elon

University next year. I am not sure what I will be majoring in, but I am thinking either public

health or human services. zona: What are you most excited about for college? morGan:

I am most excited about the different opportunities that the school will provide for me.

zona: What sports do you play in school

and away from school? Sam: In school, I

have played basketball, ultimate frisbee, and

soccer. zona: Did your frisbee team have

a good year? Do you consider it a sport? Sam:

Our frisbee team had a great year, losing only two games. We also

managed to win the state championship by beating a team who hadn’t

lost in three years. I definitely consider frisbee a sport. Anyone who has

ever played frisbee can testify as to how hard the sport actually is, both

technically and physically. zona: What is your best skill with a frisbee?

Sam: I was typically more of a defensive player, breaking up passes and

getting in passing lanes. I would also work as a receiver on the offensive

end. zona: How did it feel to win the State Championship? Sam: It

felt amazing. Skyline Tech had never lost a game, and we came in and

beat them 11-6 in the championship. It was one of the most satisfying

moments of my life. zona: What makes a good frisbee player? Sam: A

great frisbee player has to be fit, aware, and able to both throw and catch

a frisbee. Due to the fact that a player plays both offense and defense,

he must be able to both break up passes and cover opponents, and get

open so that your handlers (basically quarterbacks of frisbee) can get the

frisbee to you. zona: Why is your school so cool? Sam: My school is

so cool because it is one of the only places I’ve seen that will take their

students all over the world to foster a global mindset and prepare us for

the ever expanding world. zona: What are you going to miss about

Tesseract? Sam: I will miss all the people who make Tesseract so great:

the teachers, the administrators, the students, and more. zona: We

heard that you got accepted to ALL of the colleges you applied for.

Where do you want to go? What will you study? Sam: Yes, I did get

accepted to all of my colleges. I applied to eight or nine, and I won’t list

them all, but the most prestigious schools I was accepted to would be

NYU or Cal Poly. I plan on attending Cal Poly in the fall, and studying

City and Regional Planning. zona: Do you feel special being the first

graduating class ever at Tesseract? Sam: I feel very special about being

the first graduating class. It is such an honor, and the school has put in a

ton of effort to make us feel special and honored.

zona: We heard that all Tesseract Seniors

went to Peru. What was that like? barrett:

Yes the Spanish students went to Peru. For

many students it was the first international trip they

had ever taken. The experience was unforgettable, we saw numerous

buildings that were thousands of years old, the history there was

incredible. We also spent three days with students at La Salle high school,

we got to observe their classes and truly interact with them. Needless to

say we made lifelong friendships with students overseas. zona: What

was your favorite part of experincing Peru? barrett: Machupicchu

was the most beautiful part of Peru that we saw. The hike was grueling

and most of us were sick, but when we reached the top we knew it was

worth it. zona: Tell us about the retreat that you went on with all of

the seniors at the beginning of the year. barrett: We went up to

Prescott to see Prescott College, where we were lectured on how to write

college essays. We stayed in a haunted hotel, and attended dinner in the

little town of Prescott. zona: Why is your school so cool? barrett:

Since we are so small, our teacher student relationships are extremely

rare, these are relationships that could not be found elsewhere. Also

because we are so small we have the capability to travel the world giving

our students a global perspective. zona: What are you going to miss

about Tesseract? barrett: Mostly my teachers. I have bonded with

my teachers, and really will miss them. We are always joking around with

each other, we even eat lunch together, it will truly be like saying goodbye

to good friends. zona: We heard that Tesseract has a program that

starts college counseling in your Freshmen year. How did this help you

with your college choices? barrett: Yes, I do feel really special being

part of the first ever graduating class. I am honored to be this year’s class

president because I have gotten to see firsthand all of the new things

we are experiencing as a class. We have always been the guinea pigs for

everything, and finally it has paid off. We will always be remembered

because we were the first. zona: Where are you going to college?

What are you majoring in? barrett: I will be attending Kansas State

University to major in Fashion Merchandising. zona: What are you

most excited about for college? barrett: College is a new start, and

it is where you can make lifelong friendships and make unforgettable

memories. There is so much to be excited about, but I am really excited

to join a sorority and meet new people, I am also excited about my major

because eventually it will lead me to my dream job!

ave you heard of Learning Ally? No pun intended! Learning Ally, a non-profit organization, provides an audio alternative to written text books and literature by recording such texts and making them

easily available to dyslexic and visually impaired individuals. For many of these individuals, academic progress and success in life depends on Learning Ally’s recorded schoolbooks and literature. These recordings provide access to written materials that would otherwise be unavailable to people who are visually or physically disabled.

Driven by volunteers and motivated staff members, Learning Ally has come a long way since it opened for business after World War II, when it came to the aid of blinded soldiers who could no longer read. “First we used reel-to-reel tapes, then cassette tapes, and now digital,” explains Pam Bork, Production Director of Learning Ally, recalling the growth of the business. Currently Learning Ally has eighteen offices nationally. In Phoenix, Learning Ally has been functioning since 1953, when the Phoenix Public Library lent the upstart company a small room in its basement. Now, Learning Ally operates out of a beautiful and well-functioning building right here in Arcadia.

Bork, one of several dedicated employees working at the Phoenix recording studio, is involved in coordinating, recruiting, and guiding volunteers. Volunteers are the impetus behind the many recordings produced. “I’ve met people who I never would have met in my real life—just wonderful people who really care about children and education—who just make the job worthwhile,” she further explains, keeping in mind the 162 volunteers involved here in Phoenix who do the

majority of the work. Showing a strong passion for her job and a clear ambition to help others, Bork says, “We always try to make sure that everyone who needs the service gets the service.”

motHer’S dAyZona’s pick for the place to take Mom on Mother’s day is none other than the Good egg! This aZ gem gets straight a’s across the board. From service to ambience to menu possibilities, The Good egg is the right choice for your family on the most important day of the year.

we sent ally, Bella and their Mom, aileen, out to give The Good egg a Mother’s day test run. Here’s what the kelton girls had to say about their breakfast experience:

zona: Why is the Good Egg so awesome to take your Mom to? ally: Because it is a really yummy and fun place to be. zona: What did you eat? Was it good? ally: Chocolate chip pancakes shaped like Minnie Mouse. It was really, really yummy. zona: Why should other kids take their Mom’s to the Good Egg for Mother’s Day? ally: It’s, like, so delicious for the kids, and the parents, and the Mom’s. zona: Why is your Mom so cool? ally: Because she is really fun to be around and she doesn’t get mad that much. zona: What is your Mom’s favorite thing for breakfast? ally: She loves Eggs Benedict. She got to eat that at the Good Egg. zona: If you could go anywhere in the world with your Mom, where would you go and why? ally: San Diego. It’s so fun there. We would go to the beach and make sand castles. We go every summer. It’s also my mom’s favorite place to go. zona: Did you get to ask the Manager any questions? ally: Yes, I asked him when they open and close each day. Good Egg is open at 6:30am and closes at 2:30pm.

zona: What do you like the best about the Good Egg? bella: I really liked the smoothie that I got. It was a berry smoothie. It tasted good and I like berries. zona: Did your Mom have fun? What did she get to eat? bella: Yes, we had fun. She got the Eggs Benedict. zona: What did you eat? Was their bacon good? Have you ever tried bacon dipped in chocolate milk? bella: Eggs and bacon.

Their bacon was really good. I dipped my bacon into my whipped cream and that was really good. I like bacon and whipped cream, but not really bacon and chocolate. zona: Why should other kids take their Mom’s to the Good Egg for Mother’s Day? bella: It’s fun and a GOOOOOOOD place! zona: Why is your Mom the best? bella: She takes me shopping and takes me to school everyday. zona: If you’re Mom was any animal what would she be and why? bella: A polar bear. She doesn’t really like the cold, but she loves polar bears. zona: Did you ask the manager any questions? bella: I asked him why they sell lollipops at the front (of the restaurant). He told me that people visiting here from far away like Western things so they sell western shaped lollipops. My sister and I got a free lollipop because the man was so nice. We got a blueberry one shaped like a cowboy hat and our mouths turned all blue!

zona: Why is the Good Egg the perfect place for celebrating Mother’s Day? aileen: The good Egg is an amazing place to celebrate Mother’s Day because there is something for the entire family. It has a very relaxing atmosphere that almost seems like you’re in your own home (minus the cleaning and dishes). zona: What did you and the girls eat and drink? Anything you recommend? aileen: My all time favorite breakfast is Egg Benedict...they have quite a few different styles of Eggs Benedict. I would definitely recommend this! zona: Did you enjoy not having to clean dishes after your Mother’s Day meal? aileen: This is one of the best things about Mother’s Day! Yes I loved being able to enjoy my girls and not worry about cleaning up afterward. zona: How was the service? Is the Good Egg family friendly? aileen: This probably is one of the best restaurants for families. The service was fantastic and the staff was very knowledgeable. What I really liked is they have the kids menu on the actual menu. Then the kids feel like adult ordering off of the “big” menu. They had coloring sheets for the kids, which we love!! zona: Did you get the chance to meet the general manager? Anything interesting that you learned about the Good Egg? aileen: We met the Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer Matthew D. Trusela. I think the greatest thing that we learned about the Good Egg is it is an AZ grown company! They try and use local providers for as much as they can. I liked the companies concept of family time balance. I asked him why they closed at 2:30 every day and he said it was because they want their employees to really have that family time. It’s no wonder so many employees have been there so long. The kitchen manager started there as a dishwasher! Wow! Matthew has been there 20 plus years. It’s great to support a business that supports it’s employees too. I also liked that you really can get anything you want at The Good Egg and there are healthy options. One quote that Matthew said to me that I love is, “Healthy can still satisfy you!”. The Good Egg also really supports the schools. They have programs for good grades. Contact your local Good Egg to find out more information. zona: What does Mother’s Day mean to you? aileen: Mother’s Day means to me spending a special day with my two favorite people in the world. Plus getting a little extra help with everything! zona: What is your favorite thing to do on Mother’s Day? aileen: My favorite thing to do on Mother’s Day is to sleep in and go out to breakfast with my beautiful family. I also enjoy going shopping and getting a few things for just MOM too :)

On February 27, 2012, Xavier College Preparatory made history as it began its eight-match sand volleyball season. This year, Arizona became the first state in the country to offer sand volleyball at the high school level, and Xavier helped to pioneer the sport by being one of the first schools to participate. Paige Mittelstaedt, the team’s on-campus representative, commented on this unique leadership opportunity presented to the Xavier athletes. “It was a great opportunity for the girls to be a part of one of the first sand volleyball teams in the country,” she said. “They had the chance to play against schools that aren’t usually in Xavier’s region, allowing them to be exposed to different teams.” Although many might think that sand volleyball is a spin-off of indoor volleyball, the sport is one all its own. “It is a completely different game than the indoor season,” Mittelstaedt added. “It helps the girls develop their all-around skills, challenging them in new ways and helping them become more experienced, well-rounded players.”

Many of Xavier’s dedicated athletes who took the school to the State Cham-pionship in indoor volleyball, tried their hand at the sand sport as well. Se-nior Abigail Hornacek relates her experience on the team, saying, “Xavier Sand Volleyball has been a great experience and it is such an honor to be a pioneer in an emerging sport. To be able to say, ‘I was a part of the first high school sand volleyball team in the country,’ is an amazing feeling.” Hornacek expressed her excitement at holding the position of role model for the fu-ture generations who would participate in the sport by commenting, “I will forever remember picture day in the front courtyard of school because the question, ‘I wonder what future generations will think of our uniforms,’ kept racing through my mind. I knew that Xavier Gators to come would admire the picture we posed for that day and would be proud of their predecessors.”

This emerging sport has had such an impact on the team that Paige Mittels-taedt adds, “Some girls are even planning to switch their focus to sand volley-ball, rather than indoor, and continue it in their futures.” Hornacek attests to this fact, admitting, “I am so grateful to be able to participate in such a special part of athletic history. I will never forget that Xavier “X” I wore on my uniform, even during my experience on the USC Women’s beach volleyball team next year!” Hornacek had originally committed to play indoor volleyball at Kansas. However, after her experience with the sand volleyball season at Xavier, she decided to switch to USC where she was offered a sand volleyball scholarship.

Less than two months after beginning the nation’s first sand volleyball sea-son, Xavier College Preparatory was invited to compete in the first-ever state

championship for the sport. After defeating Fountain Hills 5-0 on Tuesday, April 17, Xavier’s sand volleyball team went down in history as the first team to win a state championship in sand volleyball. This accomplish-ment has had a profound ef-fect both locally and nation-ally, and it has inspired the newly crowned champions to strive for a second state title in the upcoming year.

In the studio, behind the scenes, there is a job for every volunteer or person wanting to help. In order to help the listeners navigate through the audio textbooks, page markers are placed throughout each text in an organized fashion. Once the book is all set to be read, a volunteer qualified for the specific level of reading spends forty-minute intervals in the recording studios reading, while someone else listens for mistakes. As those are just two of the many jobs to be done at Learning Ally, it is clear how much effort and time is invested in this important work.

The volunteers at Learning Ally take their job very seriously, because every part of the process contributes to a product that is instrumental in improving the learning and lifestyles of others. Not only blind and dyslexic people benefit from the recorded books, but also people with physical restrictions or “People with different ways of learning,” as Bork put it. Although it does not work directly with its clients, Learning Ally makes the books easily accessible online. They can be downloaded onto electronic devices or just burned onto a CD. The company also participates in the National Achievement Awards in Washington, an event for people who use Learning Ally’s services. Submitting in writing essays about what they’ve been able to accomplish with the help of Learning Ally, the award-winners qualify for scholarship money.

To reach out to as many students in need as possible, Learning Ally connects with libraries and schools across the Valley, making their products as accessible as possible. Recorded books can be downloaded from anywhere across the nation, and the company strives to improve its technology in order to keep clients satisfied with the resources available. Learning Ally, a warm community devoted to using its facilities to serve the disabled and look out for others, continues, every day, making learning easier and more enjoyable for those who are at a disadvantage.
