Employment terms GROUND STAFF POSITIONS – LONDON/SOUTH EAST ENGLAND The post will attract a competitive salary and involves working shifts of between 6 and 12 hours throughout the week including nights and rostered weekend working for which enhancements to pay will be made. You will be entitled to 28 days leave per annum which includes 8 statutory Bank Holidays. If Bank Holidays are worked you are entitled to a day off in lieu. The Company is presently involved with Pension Auto Enrolment and you will receive advice in due course if you wish to join the pension arrangements. THIS IS A SAFETY-CRITICAL POST

1 PURPOSE OF JOB 1.1 Perform operations at rostered locations on a day to day basis to provide a safe,

efficient and cost effective service to Customers and the VRL Business. 1.2 Responsible for carrying out duties to meet legislative and VRL company standard

requirements as detailed in statutory and company Regulations.

2 COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS 2.1 Requires to be a qualified Shunter, Train Preparer, In Service Freight Examiner and other competencies as required, and have a suitable knowledge of the locations at

which you are qualified to work. 2.2 Only carry out work for which you have been passed as competent to perform. 3 GENERAL SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES 3.1 It is the responsibility of all VRL employees to ensure as far as possible their own safety, that of colleagues and anybody else who will be affected by their actions or

omissions. 3.2 You must wear the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) specified in the Method of

Working (MoW) for the location at which you are working or as otherwise directed from time to time. If your PPE has a specific limited life check that it is in date before use. You must keep the PPE clean and serviceable and advise HQ when replacement items are required.

3.3 Ensure that you follow the laid - down arrangements for the reporting of accidents, incidents, hazards and other safety concerns and that all accident and incident

reporting forms are completed as soon as possible after the incident and that they are promptly faxed/e-mailed to the VRL HQ Office.

3.4 Understand the importance of coming to a clear understanding with every person affected by you carrying out your duties.

3.5 You will be issued with a précis of the Safety Management System and you will require access to Railway Group documentation (i.e. Rule Books), Codes of Practice, General Risk Assessments, Location Specific Risk Assessments and Methods of Working. You must read and understand this safety related information, and when required update such information (Rule Books etc). If you do not understand any items, ask the Operations Inspector for clarification

4 PRINCIPLE ACTIVITIES AND TASKS 4.1 Ensure all train working activity at locations is carried out in accordance with the

Method of Working, Railway Group Standards, Company Standards and statutory rules and regulations to ensure operational safety. 4.2 Assist with the investigation of all accidents, incidents, and dangerous occurrences,

liaising with other parties when necessary. 4.3 Where applicable plan and oversee the loading/unloading of rail wagons and road

vehicles to ensure regulation of traffic and ensure that urgent loads are prioritised for delivery in accordance with customer requirements.

4.4 Prioritise/arrange the movement of rail wagons within the yard for loading/unloading/maintenance.

4.5 Control the collection of documentation from rail wagons and road hauliers, ensuring prompt transition to the traffic office.

4.6 Recordable events must be noted down in the daily log where applicable including: plant and equipment breakdowns/defects, reason for any delays incurred to loading/unloading, damage to infrastructure or equipment, personal accidents, defective equipment/hazards, loading infringements, train arrival and departure times, load details etc.

4.7 Monitor and issue two way radios. 4.8 Ensure the security of sites and equipment is maintained as far as is practicable. . 4.9 Oversee the general housekeeping of the terminal including, yard, track, mess room, locker room and toilets, ensuring that the site is safe and a clean environment for

everyone.

4.10 Oversee the removal of dunnage/cradles/securing equipment etc. from rail wagon prior to the departure.

4.11 Ensure all loads comply with the laid down loading pattern or company specific requirements.

4.12 Retain required location and equipment knowledge. 4.13 Assist with the training/ familiarisation of VRL operational staff when undertaking

mentoring, only allowing them to work under close supervision until the necessary proficiencies have been obtained.

4.14 Take responsibility for the maintenance of documentation, records and all other clerical duties relating to the safe and efficient operation of the VRL business

4.15 Undertake other duties as directed by the management team commensurate with the post. 5 CONTACT WITH OTHERS 5.1 INTERNAL CONTACTS

Staff within all VRL operational locations 5.2 EXTERNAL CONTACTS

Customers, Network Rail, Road Hauliers, Freight Operating Companies, Terminal Operators, Maintenance Contractors, British Transport Police, RAIB.

6 EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING 6.1 Knowledge and competence in:- Railway Rules and Regulations, local working

instructions, Safe Systems of Work, Incidents and Accident reporting procedures, two way radio procedures.

6.2 Experience of working to and achieving timescales of workload in order to satisfy customer requirements in a busy and demanding environment. 6.3 Railway geography, knowledge of locations and VRL operational locations. 6.4 Appreciation of the commercial environment in which VRL Ltd operates. 6.5 Appreciation of Health & Safety legislation. 6.6 Excellent communication with good decision-making skills. 6.7 Conversant in the usage and hold a certificate of competency where required for all of the equipment used/operated/driven. 6.8 Hold a motor vehicle driving licence.
