There are many successful scientists whose contributions reflect a steady course, the next result building upon

the prior one, and with each study a new brick is laid for a path. And for many scientists, those bricks they

lay join those of other scientists to build not a path but a road, created by many scientists taking the same

parallel, if not predictable, course. The Jian I knew was not such a scientist.

When I first met Jian in earnest (we had met casually at earlier conferences), it was at Loyola University in

1996, where he was a faculty member at the time. Jian had invited me down from Madison, a short three hour

drive, to give a seminar. Later that year I met up with Jian again in Brisbane following the HPV meeting. I

met his wife Xiao Yi and son Andy at a holiday dinner party. By 1996, Jian’s seminal study with Ian

demonstrating that he could make papillomavirus like particles in cells infected with recombinant vaccinia

virus expressing the HPV capsid genes was widely appreciated for providing the means to generate a

prophylactic HPV vaccine. When I first talked at length with Jian in Chicago that year, he had already gone

on to uncover the roles of the minor papillomavirus L2 capsid protein in DNA binding and encapsidation, a

concept we were able to demonstrate, a mere decade later, to be important in the HPV life cycle. He also

discovered that the C-terminus of L1 was dispensable for capsid formation, a finding that led him and his

colleagues to generate combinatorial prophylactic/therapeutic vaccines using capsids composed of C-

terminally truncated L1 proteins decorated with T cell-specific epitopes of other viral early proteins. Upon his

return to Brisbane, he pursued another innovative line of research in which he discovered that the reason HPV

capsid genes are poorly expressed in most mammalian cells but highly expressed in yeast is because the

capsid genes are littered with codons which in mammalian cells the cognate charged tRNAs are limiting. He

went on to understand that this utilization of rare mammalian codons potentially links the efficient expression

of the capsid proteins to terminal differentiation of the infected stratified epithelium. This was one of the last

studies Jian worked on before his untimely death.

What always struck me about Jian was that he was not willing to be one of those scientists who follow a

predictable path of discovery. Rather he was willing if not eager to pave a new path. I have only met a few

scientists quite like Jian. Those who think outside the box and can synthesize new concepts from seemingly

disparate or unrelated pieces of data. These are often the scientists who pave the most important paths in

science. They are the scientists with vision. Jian clearly was such a scientist.

Undoubtedly, Jian paid heavily for paving these new paths. Jian’s new insights were not infrequently met

with a hefty degree of skepticism. But over time, that skepticism was matched by a growing awareness that

his insights likely were correct and important! Jian remarked to me once how frustrated he was about an

exciting new result of his that he had tried to publish in the mid 1990s, but was denied by the journal editor

because the reviewers claimed not to believe his results. This unsuccessful effort was followed within a

year’s time by another prominent lab in the field publishing the exact same insight. It made me reflect on

how a scientific maverick can be both looked at with skepticism and at the same time envy, perhaps with the

latter leading to not so admirable ends. Such a story, it seems, repeated itself several times for Jian.

While an undergraduate, I had lost a close friend to a rare disease. I saw then how frustrated the attending

doctors were because they could do absolutely nothing. This personal tragedy led me to abandon my career

goal of becoming a clinician, and pursue graduate training in the biological sciences with the hope that some

experimental insight of mine might help doctors learn how to save lives they could not before. We lost Jian.

But there are many lives that will be saved because of him. This is a legacy for which Jian’s wife and son, and

we his friends can be dearly proud.

I miss Jian, but despite his having passed away a decade ago, he still inspires me. I am sure the same is true

for Xiao Yi and Andy, his beloved family, as well as his colleagues who revered him.

周健给我的深刻印象是：他不愿意成为那种遵循一条可预测的道路去发现的科学家。他更愿意去铺

设一条新路。我只遇到过少数几位像周健这样的科学家。他们的思维能够跳出条条框框，能够从看似

迥异或无关的数据中提出出新的概念。在科学领域中，往往是这些科学家铺设了最重要的道路。他们

是有理想的、有创意的科学家。很明显，周健就是这样的科学家。

毋庸置疑，周健为铺设这些新路付出了很多代价。他的新想法不是没有遇到过怀疑看法。但随着时

间的推移，人们逐渐意识到周健的想法很可能是正确和重要的。周健曾跟我讲过一件令他很失望的

事。1990 年代中期，他曾想把一个令人振奋的新研究成果写成论文发表，但遭到了杂志编辑的拒绝，

原因是一些评论者不相信他的结论。但随之一年内，同领域的另一个著名的实验室发表了完全相同的

研究结论。这件事使我想到，持异议的科学家可能是出于怀疑看法、同时也可能是出于嫉妒，只是后

者或许会导致并不令人赞赏的结果。这样的事件，似乎在周健身上发生过多次。

在大学时代，因一种罕见的疾病，我失去了一个亲密的朋友。我看到那些主治医生是多么地沮丧，

因为他们对此完全无能为力。这一悲痛的个人经历使我放弃了成为一名临床医生的事业目标，转而进

行大学生物科学教学。我希望我的一些实验性想法能够帮助医生学会挽救那些他们之前不能挽救的生

命。我们失去了周健，但因为他，很多生命会得到拯救。这是周健留下来的，使他的夫人、儿子和我

们这些他的朋友引以为傲的遗产。

我很怀念周健，尽管他已离开了我们十年，但他的精神仍然激励着我。我相信，对于孙小依、

My Memories of Jian Zhou

In 1994 I was looking to set up my own laboratory and leave North America after 3 years of postdoctoral

studies in Toronto and Cleveland. I came upon an advertisement for a suitable position in Brisbane. I

interviewed and was accepted and in early October I arrived at midnight on a hot Brisbane night to be met by

this lanky Scotsman, Ian Frazer. The position I had accepted was in fact the one that Jian had earlier left to

pursue his career in the USA. He had gone to Loyola University in Chicago to join the recently set up

papillomavirus group led by Lutz Gissmann and colleagues, leaving behind an NHMRC grant with 2 years to

run on it. So my first interaction with Jian was a long distance one and was one of thanks for his decision to

first write a successful grant and secondly to leave Australia. At this stage I had not met Jian at all, but had

only heard about him from work colleagues. I was however very aware of his seminal work with Ian Frazer

on the HPV vaccine, as the very week I arrived Ian was off to Melbourne to announce with CSL a commercial

research collaboration to develop the vaccine. The rest, of course, is history, with the vaccine now on the

market and having the potential to save millions of lives in the future.

I did not meet Jian in person until 3 years later when he decided to return to what had become the Centre for

Immunology and Cancer Research, a name that Nick Saunders had coined. My very first impression was that

he was a tall man with a very engaging smile, and an open and friendly manner. I had some trepidation about

Jian’s return as our areas of research did overlap to some degree but I need not have worried. Jian’s research

interests were in fact so wide-ranging and varied there was plenty of action for everyone.

My strongest and fondest recollection of Jian was of an afternoon tea we attended one day to entertain some

University official or another – you know, the sort of meeting one had to attend and make small talk at to

appease those in the University administration. It was the sort of meeting one feels is of no obvious value,

especially to bench researchers like Jian and myself. (In fact, I must say in passing that all the Centre’s group

heads were forever grateful that Ian Frazer often shielded us from these onerous tasks.) The day was a hot

and humid one and we were on the top floor of Diamantina House, the old nurses’ quarters. The Centre by

this time had grown to 40 or so and this building was the only place on campus that we could expand into.

The University and Hospital, after much urging, had finally fitted out some laboratory space and the final

result was what one would call “quaint”, It was a terrible building, in hindsight. The lifts were the sort that

one only took at great personal risk – like old men climbing hills they wheezed and struggled up and down

each day and many a time one was left stuck in them waiting to be rescued. Air-conditioning was a luxury

that was only found in some rooms and certainly not the 6th floor tearoom. Anyway I digress. Back to the

afternoon tea. Jian, Nick Saunders and myself were talking to ourselves in the corner, studiously avoiding the

unnamed University official and his party as best we could, to talk about useful things such as science.

Jian was outlining his latest research idea, his next big thing. It was the idea that the papillomavirus was

controlling its gene expression via something called codon usage. I will not make you suffer through the

details but needless to say this was a very radical and novel idea. My reaction to Jian was along the lines that

he was completely mad and it would never work. Jian just smiled, a smile that said “we’ll see”. And of

course Jian was right and he had once again pushed the field in a new direction. This work was the basis of

the biotechnology company Coridon, which is still going strong today.

That was his gift to us, really – this ability to think ahead, to bring new things to science from out of left-field.

I miss his cheery smile, his outgoing manner, his personality that brought people together. One thing I don’t

miss is his use of the radiation room, for which he was notoriously messy. For him, such mess was of little

importance when a hot result was to be had. It was about getting the experiment done, to find out what was

over the next hill, the next valley, to make the next discovery. And he certainly did that and for that we can

forgive Jian an occasional mess.

It was at the very beginning of my career in science that I met Jian Zhou. Jian was a senior research scientist

at the PA Hospital in the laboratory in which I undertook my PhD. There are many reasons for pursuing a

career in research, many are lofty, some are more pragmatic, however Jian was one of the first scientists I ever

met for whom there seemed to be no other choice but to be a scientist.

My earliest memories of Jian are of his passion and enthusiasm for the knowledge that would be uncovered by

his work, without consideration of the achievements he may have been accomplishing in the process. As

those in research know, the discovery of new knowledge is mostly borne out of countless months or years of

hard and repetitive work; so Jian’s ability to maintain such passion for his science had a tremendous effect on

both the lab and how I personally regarded my scientific pursuits.

In the beginning of my career, I was not aware of the importance both professionally and personally of being

guided and mentored by gifted people. However on reflection I have come to realise that Jian was one of my

first true mentors. He was always willing and available to discuss any scientific concept or result and would

share his data willingly with me in order for me to better understand ‘good science’. Jian also saw the

importance in the ‘whole picture’ and often discussed the more operational and political side of the industry,

which I found incredibly valuable given that as a student I was very naïve and rarely exposed to these issues.

Even after Jian left to work at Loyola University in the US, he would email me to catch up on how I was

doing and give me some insights into what he thought I should consider for my next career decision.

I had enormous respect for Jian as a scientist but also as a person. Apart of the wealth of knowledge he

afforded me through his scientific giftedness, he was also a good friend. Jian was one of those rare scientists

who despite his great talent didn’t take himself too seriously, so we shared many a laugh, a joke and a story

over the years. Upon my leaving the lab for a position overseas, Jian still kept in contact to see how I was

doing and his friendship was unwavering.

In his passing the world has lost not only a brilliant scientist who contributed greatly but many of us also lost

a really great friend who is keenly missed.

We Miss You Jian

I first met Jian on our block of land at Mt Ommaney in 1998 where we were building our house. Jian had

bought the opposite block and building began on both our houses at about the same time.

I was immediately taken by Jan’s presence, tall, gentle and one of those faces that immediately says when

one looked at him” I am special.

At first we talked about our houses, he had collected very modern light fittings from Europe during his travels,

he was going to have a home theatre, it was going to be his dream home. Ultimately things moved on to long

term plans, Barbecues, cooking, food in general was a shared passion as Jian’s wife and Mother were both

great cooks, and he himself loved to lend a hand. My wife is Indian and we had a restaurant in Sydney before

coming to Brisbane, so we were going to eat like kings once our houses were finished.

Jian also loved wood and when he found out I was a weekend cabinetmaker, he was very excited, food, wood

and family, life was going to be great fun.

Our families finally met and so began a friendship that although at one stage was filled with pain, today we

all still think of each other and definitely will never forget Jian. We moved away from Brisbane in 2006, but

Xiaoyi, Andy and Xiaoyi’s parents were here in Wollongong for our daughters’ wedding last year.

Jian was a remarkable man in many ways, not just a brilliant mind as many people think of him, but also a

brilliant man. He was one of those rare people who managed to transcend race and the culture where he grew

up. He was a citizen of the world, could entertain and make anybody laugh be they true blue Aussies, English

or American scientists, and when he was with you, he really was with you, he gave his full attention and was

very generous with his heart.

He was also a romantic, he tried to be blasé about things but he was a romantic husband and loving father and

his loss will always be a cross for them to bear.

Xiaoyi showed tremendous courage after the loss of Jian, she finished his dream house, did everything she

knew he wanted, and continued to raise their son Andy as her husband would have done. She worried herself

sick at one stage as trying to do everything the way she knew Jian would have wanted was a huge physical

and financial strain for her, but she did it, and I know in my heart that Jian would be pleased with them both

today.

People remember Jian as a brilliant man, but for us he was a brilliant human being, his short life changed the

world no doubt, but for us, we were lucky to have known him at a very personal level, as we saw him in his

private world.

We miss you Jian

Commemoration of a Brilliant Scientist and Dear Friend

It is a great honour for us to commemorate and celebrate this 9th anniversary of Dr. Jian

Zhou’s passing. We offer our cordial condolence to Jian’s wife Xiao Yi and their son

Andreas. In his rather short life, Dr Zhou made a great contribution to the scientific advance

in the virology and cancer research field. Together with Professor Ian Frazer, they have

developed the world first cervical cancer vaccine, a real breakthrough in cancer prevention,

which will benefit millions of women’s health worldwide. We are extremely proud to have

such a good friend and colleague for many years. Our friendship with Dr. Zhou started 19

years’ ago, when we worked at the same institute, Imperial Cancer Research Fund

Laboratory, Cambridge, UK. He was such a bright and young scientist who brought a lot of

happy memories to us. Our friendship flourished in Cambridge, when we arrived from

China to take posts at the Department of Pathology, Cambridge University. Jian helped us

to find accommodation in the Link house, where Chinese visiting scholars from mainland

China, share the same house and look after each other. Dr. Jian and Xiao Yi also helped us

to settle into the Department of Pathology, we can clearly remember at one midnight, when

our lab’s several -800C freezers broken down, he helped us to transfer many precious

clinical materials to safety. He was a wonderful scientist, very intelligent and a great

achiever. He later went to work with Professor Ian Frazer in Australia, where he made the

tremendous discovery of this new vaccine. We maintain contact with his family wherever

they are: in Australia, US or back to UK attending meetings. We regard it very fortunate to

have had him and his family as our closest friends. We sorely miss him. He will be

remembered in our hearts forever.

第一次见到周健是 20 年前了。当时我在北京医科大学生物化学与分子生物学系跟随张迺蘅先生

工作。一天，张先生领来了一位很帅气的年轻人，向我们介绍说这是周健博士，到我们实验室作博士

后。那时，博士后这个名词对我们来讲还并不熟悉，他好像也是张先生的第一个博士后。但是，他的

到来为我们这个实验室带来了新的生气和活力。

周健是一个非常有感染力的人。他热情、爽快，常常几句话就能使气氛活跃起来。现在似乎还能想

象出来他坐在实验台前，头稍稍的向左上方仰着，满脸微笑的样子。有他在实验室的时候，你是绝对

不会感到寂寞的。那时，张先生的研究生们年龄差距很大，都是恢复高考后最初几届的毕业生考上来

的。周健虽然是博士后，但从年龄上讲还算不上是“老大”。不过，他在实验室里可真像个老大哥，

大家有什么事情也愿意同他商量。学生们讲，周健具有南方人的细心，但更像是一个北方的男子——

大气。

周健是一个非常执着的人。他在工作中十分认真，效率很高，有时也很“玩命”。在博士后工作期

间，周健获得了到剑桥工作的机会，来到了 Lionel Crawford 的实验室。一次，Lionel在 tea time时向

大家随便谈起一个实验的设想，没想到几天后周健将预实验的结果呈现给 Lionel，并拿出了完整的实

施方案。那时，剑桥 Tennis Court Road 上病理系那栋已有了一百多年历史的大楼四层实验室里的灯光

常常是亮到午夜，而他就是最后离开实验室的人。周健的执着还体现在他对自己所从事的研究领域

上。他一直从事乳头瘤病毒的研究，并获得了国际同行的认可，在这一研究领域内已是具有相当的名

气。他曾经讲过，很多人离开了这个领域，但是我留下来了，这是能够在一个研究领域取得成功很重

要的因素之一。今天的青年科技工作者可能更需要这样一份执着。周健在学术上的成就我不必赘述，

直至今日，这一领域的人们还会记得他的贡献。

周健是一个非常真诚的人。他可以毫无保留地将自己在工作中的体会、经验乃至教训传授给你。他

也可以不求任何回报地帮助他的同事、朋友。我到剑桥是经周健推荐而来的。他和夫人亲自开车到机

场接我，又在接下来的日子带着我熟习剑桥的环境。也正因为有他和他的夫人在那段时间的陪伴，才

使我度过了那一段最难熬的日子，克服了对家乡、亲人的思念，使工作走上正轨。也是他在得知我获

得在剑桥大学攻读博士学位机会的时候，给予我极大的鼓励，使我下决心留下来攻读学位。在我的博

士论文前言中，我将周健列为我的第一个要感谢的人。

最后一次见到周健是 1995 年。他当时在美国工作，已经是乳头瘤病毒研究领域的知名学者，应邀

到剑桥访问。我和几个朋友在家中和他小聚，感觉到他在超负荷的工作，但还是那样的精力充沛。很

遗憾当时没有留下照片，但无论如何也没有想到那竟是我们最后一次见面。当我看到 Journal of

Virology杂志目录中一篇文章作者中 Zhou Jian的名字标着黑框时，我惊呆了。我忙打电话问一位朋

友，她说她也刚刚从剑桥大学病理系的 Margaret Stanley教授那里得到噩耗。放下电话转眼向窗外望

去，下雨了，上苍亦在哀悼！

The first time I met Dr Jian Zhou was 20 years ago. I was working at the Department of Biochemistry and

Molecular Biology of Beijing Medical University, under Professor Xiheng Zhang. One day, the Professor

arrived with a handsome young man, and introduced him to us. He was Dr Jian Zhou, the first Post-Doctor

working in our lab. With his then unfamiliar title, he brought to our lab a breath of fresh air and spirit.

There was a wide range of ages amongst the post-graduate students working in our lab. Jian was not the oldest,

but he was everyone’s ‘Big Brother’. We would ask him whenever we had difficulties with our work. He was

so generous and warm-hearted, always willing to help, to share with us his knowledge and experience. He had

an infectious, humorous and inspiring personality. It was never boring working in the lab when he was around.

He could lighten up the air with couple of words. Today I can still see him, sitting at the lab bench, head tilted

to the left, with a big bright smile.

Jian was a hard worker. He devoted himself to his work earnestly. During his post-doctoral period, he was

offered the opportunity to work in Professor Lionel Crawford’s lab at Cambridge. On one occasion during a

tea break, Lionel casually mentioned a tentative plan for an experiment. Little did he know that couple of days

later, Jian had amassed the results of the preliminary experiment and produced a complete plan for the project.

In those days the lights from the lab on level 4 of the Pathology Building on Tennis Court Road were burning

well into the night. He was always the last one to leave. Jian had been doing research on the Human

Papilloma Virus for a long time, and his work had gained international recognition. “Many people have left

this field, but I remain” he said. He attributed his achievements to his persistency. The profoundness of his

work is beyond my words. The contribution he made in this field will never be forgotten.

Jian was sincere and caring. He reached out wholeheartedly to the people around him. I came to work at

Cambridge on his recommendation. He and his wife picked me up from the airport, and drove me around over

the following days to get me familiar with my new surroundings. It was during this time that I went through

the toughest time in my life, and with his help I was able to put my work on track. He was the one who

encouraged me to study for my PhD at Cambridge, and he was the first person I wanted to thank in my thesis.

The last time I met Jian was in 1995, when he was invited to visit Cambridge. By that time he was already

famous for his research into the Human Papilloma Virus. We held a small gathering for him in my home. I

felt that he was working too hard, though he was still very energetic. It was such a pity that we didn’t take

photos at the gathering, but I never thought it would be the last time that I would see him. I was stunned when

I saw the black box around his name in an article published in Journal of Virology. I immediately rang one of

my friends who said she had just got the shocking news of his passing from Professor Margaret Stanley.

2006 年 11 月，世界首例癌症预防疫苗研制成功。著名的《时代》杂志将宫颈癌疫苗的发明评为

2006 年度世界十大科技成果之一。

宫颈癌疫苗是我的 PhD 论文导师澳大利亚 2006 年年度杰出人物 Ian Frazer 教授和已故的周健博

士共同发明的。1991 年，他们发现，乳头瘤病毒的晚期蛋白在体外可以自我形成病毒样颗粒，与病

毒颗粒本身有相似的免疫原性，于是提出用病毒样颗粒作为疫苗来预防人类乳头瘤病毒的感染，从而

预防宫颈癌的发生，因为 99%的宫颈癌的发生与人类乳头瘤病毒感染有关。当年，著名的病毒学

《VIROLOGY》杂志发表了其开拓性的论文。如果说，宫颈癌预防疫苗是“上帝给妇女的礼物”，周健

就是亲自赠送这一珍贵礼物的其中一位天才科学家。然而，命运总是捉弄人，周健导师英年早逝。

1999 年，无情的病魔夺走了他富有活力和创造性的生命。他未能等到世界的同行科学家为他们的成

功发明弹冠相庆之时刻，更未能看到他们的共同发明工作正在给这个世界带来巨大变化。惜哉，痛

哉。

我有幸于 1997 年底到周健领导的实验室做访问学者，随后转成他和 Ian Frazer 的 PhD 学生，在

他的直接指导下进行乳头瘤病毒样颗粒的粘膜免疫原性的研究。从认识到相知，时间不到两年，但

是，他对科学研究的执着，对工作的热情，影响着我，激励着我；他对同事和朋友的关心和帮助，使

我感动；他富于幽默感，有巨大的人格魅力。即使他去世已经九年，其音容相貌，在我心中依然是那

么清晰。

健献身于科学。1997 年，周健导师已是一位成名的科学家，独立领导一个研究小组，主持不同

的研究项目。学术界都清楚，他和 Ian Frazer 教授共同发明的乳头瘤病毒样颗粒将会成为成功预防

宫颈癌的疫苗。可他依然保持着无限的科研热情和旺盛的工作活力，每天很早来到实验室，指导我们

这些学生、博士后以及访问学者做实验。午后帮助分析实验结果，指出问题所在并提出解决的方法。

他有着惊人的科学敏感性和研究思路，他对病毒领域的研究现状之了解和发展方向的展望让人佩服。

他经常亲自做实验。很难想像，健（我们叫他 Jian）这么大的个子，却能把分子克隆等这些精细操

作的实验做得非常漂亮。更多的时间，健总是坐在计算机前不停地敲打着键盘，写科研项目，申请基

金。有时，在计算机前一坐就是整个上午，而不休息。1998 年，在健的指导下，我完成了我的第一

篇英文论文。当健修改完最后一稿，我们俩将论文放入信封封好时，已经是晚上 10 点了。对于我，

完成第一篇英文论文自然应该是非常的兴奋和激动，可是已发表几十篇有影响的论文的他，也依然如

此充满热情。天才加勤奋总是让健非常成功，仅在 1999 年，他一个人就获得了三个澳大利亚 NHMRC

国家级基金。与周健在一起，让我们感受到他真正是有大智慧的人。尽管周健只有短短十几年的研究

生涯，可其在病毒学领域的多个方面都做出了重大的贡献。

健乐于助人。他经常对我们说，在国外，努力工作，自己做出成绩就是最好的，但也要尽量帮助

自己的同胞，让大家共同在国外发展。他帮助过许多同事和朋友，帮助过许多素不相识的人。比如

说，帮助同事找更好的工作；资助国内的学者到他的实验室进修。健对于他的学生更是关心。他经常

周末带我到他的家里改善生活。我非常喜欢周健的妈妈。喜欢老人家的豁达大度，喜欢其所做的杭州

风味的水饺。南北方不同的吃水饺方式，让我记忆犹深。在我因伤住院时，健多次到病房看望我，让

我安心养伤。我们两人最后一次通电话，是在健最后一次回国前的一天晚上，其时，我已经出院，正

在家休息。我接到健打来的电话，他告诉我他需要回中国，希望我安心养伤，早日康复。我现在仍清

楚地记得健对我说的最后一句话：Take care。健还富有强烈的爱心，经常为遇到困难的中国同胞捐

款。此类事情，不胜枚举。

健既富于幽默又平易近人。我们特别喜欢与健在一起工作。健可以从一些细微的小事中发掘出让

人可以开怀大笑的地方。因而，我们的实验室里总是笑声不断，有时连隔壁实验室的同事也受到感

染。在他的手下工作，虽然很忙，但不觉得很累。一个玩笑就可洗去一天的疲倦。与健一起工作，既

感觉轻松，又非常快乐，而更有兴趣。每当回忆这些往事时，多希望时光能倒流，再回到那快乐充实

的日子。

两年前的春天，我去杭州开会，有机会去看望长眠在故乡土地上的已故导师周健。青山有幸，一

代英杰安眠故国，魂归故土。当我献上一束鲜花，深深地给他鞠躬之际，层层往事，浮现脑海。忘不

了，在布里斯本机场我们第一次见面的情景；忘不了，您在实验室冰箱门上给我讲述我要做之课题的

情景；忘不了，你在计算机旁勤奋工作的背影；忘不了，你爽朗的笑声……；更忘不了，是你让我感

受到科学研究的乐趣。

时间可以使我们暂时忘掉失去亲人的痛苦，但却能使我们的怀念更加深远。永远怀念您，我的导

师周健。

世界上第一个癌症疫苗的发明者、我的博士后导师——周健离开人世间已经有九年的时间了。九

年来，周健的音容笑貌时时刻刻浮现在我的眼前。我总感觉到要做点儿什么来纪念他。但由于担心自

己的语言表达能力太差，无法用笔来表达出自己对周健的思念，所以一直也没有成文。但这种想法一

直蕴藏在我的心底，无论何时，只要触及它，就会感到象有一根无形的针刺痛我的心。时至周健逝世

九周年之际，从我旧日记忆中挑选出几个生活片段写成此文，以表达我对他的思念。

十二年前，在我获得博士学位后到处寻找博士后的工作机会之时，周健已经是一个斐声中外的国

际病毒学家。我在著名的国际病毒学杂志上读到他的十几篇关于人类乳头瘤病毒开创性的研究文献，

其中包括他和 Ian Frazer 教授联合发表的关于人类乳头瘤病毒晚期蛋白 L1 体外单独表达可以形成病

毒样颗粒(VLP)，与完整的人类乳头瘤病毒相比，具有完全相同的免疫原性，但却完全没有感染性的

文章。VLP 的发明创造是人类宫颈癌疫苗的基础。在此基础上发展成了人类历史上第一个预防癌症的

疫苗。此疫苗的成功上市，有望根除人类宫颈癌，是全世界女性的福音。研究发现，预防人类乳头瘤

病毒感染可以起到预防宫颈癌的作用，因为 99%人类宫颈癌是由乳头瘤病毒感染引起的。在 1995 年

时的乳头瘤病毒研究领域，所有的科学家都清楚地认识到 VLPs 的发明将引起人类癌症疫苗研究的一

场重大革命。VLPs 也被某些科学家尊称为“周颗粒”(Particles Zhou)。在研读了周健的几十篇科

研论文之后，我决定申请周健实验室的博士后研究员位置。周健热情地为我这个尚未谋面的博士申请

到博士后基金。在经过一个复杂漫长的申请护照签证的过程后，我终于在 1996 年见到仰慕已久的周

健。

我与周健相识于芝加哥一个风雪交加的晚上。由于飞机晚点，我到达芝加哥国际机场时，周健已

在机场等候了两个多小时。而第一次见面我有点吃惊：在我的想象中，作为一个斐声中外的科学家肯

定已经是很大年纪了，但我所见到的却是一个高大健康、气宇轩昂的青年男子。他的为人处事都显示

出其成熟、睿智、幽默而不失热情。由于刚从中国国内的科研体系换到了一个完全陌生的美国科研体

系，在国内所学到的知识和实验方法要么不实用要么已经过时，而他却以无比的耐心手把手地教我怎

样做实验设计、怎样做科研报告，告诉我很多他自己多年体会出的实验技巧和方法，手把手地教我怎

样分析实验结果，找出问题的所在和解决问题的方法。周健有着无限的科研热情和旺盛的工作精力，

他对科研有一种执着探索的精神。在工作中，他总是亲力而为，每天很早来到实验室准备一天所要做

的实验，包括实验设计、实验材料。他总是亲自操作实验，并且常常告诫我：科研灵感来自于实践；

如果你不亲自做实验，你就无法在实验技术上指导学生和实验室工作人员，你也就无法把握研究方

向。在实验上，周健处处都显示出灵巧的一面。同样的实验从周健的手中出来的结果总是显得比别人

漂亮整齐，其照片、图表可以和教科书上的示范图相媲美。他总是告诉我，人生苦短，要作点对社会

有益的工作，所以他总是八小时内集中精力在实验台上做具体实验。而下班后，他还利用晚上的时间

撰写科研项目、申请基金和科研文章，批阅、修改学生的论文。普通人每天工作八小时，而周健平均

每天工作十六个小时以上。我常常在我的电子信箱中看到周健在晚上十二点和第二天凌晨五点发给我

们的电子邮件安排有关实验。别人睡八个小时，而周健每天只睡 5-6 个小时。周健用短短十几年的

科研时间做出了别人几十年都不能完成的工作。

我们经常一起讨论工作，讨论最新的科研动向，最新的实验方法。周健对其所研究的领域的现状

有着深刻的了解，能够及时根据已发表的文献和最新科研成果调整其研究方向。周健总是利用一切可

能的机会来提携年轻的科学家，包括介绍我们这些青年人去认识一些在此领域中的有名科学家，尽可

能让所有的工作人员都加入到能够发表文章的科研项目中，这样就使每个工作人员都有发表自己的科

研文章的机会。

除了工作之外，周健在生活上也给了我无微不至的关怀。在刚到美国的最初几个月里，由于刚从

国内的环境中转到了一个说英语的环境中，我遇到了在国内无法想象的困难。在我还没有到达芝加哥

之前，周健已经提前为我租好了房子。在到达芝加哥的当天晚上，他又冒着风雪给我送来了锅碗瓢盆

等生活用品，并且将他新买的自行车借给我骑。在后来的日子里，他帮我买车，帮我买家具，手把手

地教我学开车，直到考取驾照。我能平安地度过初到美国的文化休克期，与周健的帮助是密不可分

的。周健不仅帮助他自己实验室的人，并且帮助他周围的同胞。他常说，我们第一代移民都不容易，

我们应该互相帮助，使我们的生活与原来相比更快乐一点，使工作和学习更容易一点。我们周围的中

国同胞都得到过周健不同的帮助，包括周健利用自己的声誉和影响为同胞写推荐信以找到更好的工

作，帮助其他实验室的同事解决工作中和生活上的困难，帮助许多甚至不认识的同胞。我经常见到许

多同胞拿着写好的推荐信来到实验室让周健签名，而这些同胞连周健都不认识。但经过简单的交谈

后，周健总是尽自己最大的努力来帮助他们。正如周健所说，几乎所有认识他和小依的中国同胞都到

他家做过客。

在我到芝加哥半年多后，由于 Ian Frazer 教授的盛情邀请，周健离开了美国，回到了布里斯本

亚历山大公主医院接任副教授职位。我记得他离开时，实验室内所有同事都恋恋不舍。在那段时间

里，周健的面容总是显得很疲惫。现在想来，病魔可能就是从那时起就潜入周健体内的。

我于 1997 年追随周健来到澳大利亚，加入到他刚刚建立起来的实验团队。没想到仅仅一年之

后，周健就突然地离开了我们。他走得太突然，使我在随后的很长时间里都无法接受这个现实。虽然

周健的生命很短暂，但他给这个世界留下了宝贵的财富。正如谷淑燕教授所说，周健是一个好人，大

大的好人。他是一个有理想、有知识、有见地、有能力、有热情的科学家。周健是我一生崇敬的老

师，一生受益的良友。我将永远思念您——周健博士。

Missing You Forever

Dr. Jian Zhou, one of the inventors of the first cancer vaccine in human history, as well as the respected

supervisor for my postdoctoral training, passed away nine years ago. In the past nine years, his voice and

appearance seem to be still with me. I have always intended to do something to commemorate him but since

my writing skill is not so adept, I was afraid I could not fully express my missing for Jian Zhou. So the

writing has been delayed until now. But the thought has been in my mind all the time; whenever touched, it

hurts me just like having an invisible needle in my heart. At Jian’s ninth anniversary, I’d like to compose an

article by picking up several pieces of the past to express my missing for him.

Twelve years ago, while I was looking for a postdoctoral position after graduation from my Ph.D. degree, Jian

Zhou was a world-recognized virologist. I read more than ten scientific papers published in well-know

virology journals about Jian’s creative research achievement on Human Papilloma Virus, including the

famous article published in Virology “Expression of vaccinia recombinant Human papillomvirus 16 L1 and

L2 ORF proteins in epithelial cells is sufficient for assembly of HPV virion-like particles (VLPs)”. The

observation of expression of human papillomavirus late protein L1 could form VLPs is the fundamental

invention in development of human vaccine in prevention of women’s cervical cancer. The success of

commercialization of this first cancer vaccine in human history brings hope for eliminating women’s cervical

cancer from all over the world since all the medical research results have demonstrated that there is a high co-

relation between human papillomavirus infection and women’s cervical cancer occurrence. All human clinical

trial results have proved that prevention of the Human Papilloma Virus infection can prevent 99% of women’s

cervical cancer. In 1995, all the scientists in papillomvirus research field would see perspectives of cervical

cancer vaccine development as the invention of VLPs. Some scientists gave a nickname to Jian Zhou as

“Particles Zhou” in respect to his contribution of invention of VLPs. After reading more than ten scientific

papers from Jian Zhou, I decided to apply for the postdoctoral position in his lab. Jian Zhou enthusiastically

applied for a research fund for me whom he had never met before. After a long and complex process of

applying for a passport and visa, I finally met Jian Zhou whom I had been admiring for a long time.

I met Jian Zhou on a wet and windy evening in the middle of a cold winter in Chicago. Because of the flight

delay, Jian had been waiting for me for more than two hours when I finally arrived in Chicago. The first

impression of Jian Zhou surprised me: in my mind, the world famous scientist must be an old gentleman, but

what I saw was a vigorous young fellow. His behaviour showed his maturity, intelligence, humour and

enthusiasm. Because I just transferred from a Chinese research environment to an American research system

that was totally new to me, my scientific knowledge and skills were not up dated well. Jian Zhou patiently

taught me how to use scientific principles to design, undertake, interpret research experiments and results,

how to summarize and publish our primary scientific observations, taught me the detailed techniques and

methodologies he had learned from his own experience and lessons. He also personally taught me how to

analyse the results, how to identify the key questions and errors and how to solve the problems aroused from

the experiments. Jian Zhou was working so hard and had unlimited enthusiasm and exuberant vitality for

scientific research. He had the determination of constantly seeking the truth in the scientific world. In his

daily work, he always tried to do everything personally. He came to the lab very early every morning to make

the preparation for the whole day's work, including making experimental design, deciding the detailed

research methods and preparing experiment materials. He always performed the key experiments by himself if

his timetable allowed him to do so, and advised me that the scientific ideas always came to mind during his

bench practice. He always reminded me that if you do not conduct the experiment yourself, you would not

have the ability to instruct the students and research assistants on technical aspects, and would be unable to

command the research direction. Jian Zhou often demonstrated his clever part in designing and conducting the

experiments. Over the same experiments, the results generated from his hands always looked better. The

pictures and charts of his results were comparable with the traditional textbooks. He always said “the life is

short, do something”. Therefore, he followed this rule and pushed himself to work hard to his body’s

limitation. He focused on the bench work during the normal eight-hour working time and worked on paper

work in the evening, including reading and amending students’ theses, writing scientific papers, grant

applications and project progress reports, and so on. Normal people work eight hours each day, but Jian

worked more than sixteen hours on average every day. I often found the emails in my mailbox sent by Jian

just before midnight and another sent at 5am on the next morning in order to arrange the experiments, discuss

our new research findings, innovations in techniques and information of new publications. Other people slept

eight hours each day, but Jian slept only 5~6 hours each day. Jian Zhou had made so many great scientific

achievements in numerous research areas including molecular virology, molecular immunology and vaccine

developments in his short scientific life.

We often held discussion about the latest development and new innovations in our research field. Jian Zhou

had such good knowledge in research directions of papillomavirus research field, and was able to adjust his

research direction according to the latest published papers and achievements. He had such a good personality,

and very good communication skills that made him maintain a good relationship with world research leaders

in his research fields, get pre-published scientific observations, then he could adjust his group’s research

directions to maintain a world-class level. Jian Zhou always used every opportunity to promote young

scientists, including introducing young scientists to the world reputation scientists in his field. He would get

all the team involved in the projects which had potential to lead to publications. Thus everyone could have the

opportunity to have their name in publications and certainly this would promote their personal profiles.

Jian Zhou provided me with personal help in many daily life aspects as I settled into a new culture. In the first

few months after I arrived in America, I met unimaginable difficulties because of the big differences between

America and China and the language was also a huge barrier for me to settle in the new environment quickly.

Even before I arrived in Chicago, Jian Zhou had rented an apartment for me. On the first night of my arrival,

he came to my apartment in windy and snowing weather, brought me some living essentials (such as cooking

pots and dinner bowls) and lent me his new bike. In the following weeks, he helped me to buy a car, buy

essential furniture and taught me how to drive until I got my driving license. His help made me go through the

“culture shocking” period smoothly and safely. Jian Zhou helped not only the people in his lab, but also other

Chinese people. He often said that, the first generation of immigration had to meet many challenges, let’s help

each other to make our life happier and easier. Many Chinese in our community received help from Jian Zhou.

Using his reputation and influence, Jian Zhou wrote reference letters for other Chinese who were looking for

better positions. Jian Zhou also provided help to overcome the difficulties both in work and in daily life, even

to the never-met Chinese. Several times I saw the Chinese people from other labs come to seek Jian Zhou’s

signature on the recommendation letter for job applications. Jian Zhou did not even know them. But after

some talking and discussion, Jian Zhou always tried his best to help them. Just as Jian said, everyone he and

his wife knew had been a guest to his home.

About one year after I arrived in Chicago, Jian Zhou accepted Professor Ian Frazer’s great kind invitation and

took the Associate Professor position at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, Australia. I still remember

the moving sight when all the researchers in our lab farewelled him and his family. During that period of time,

Jian Zhou sometimes looked tired. Thinking now I believe that he had worked too hard.

In 1997, following Jian Zhou’s move, I came to Brisbane to join his newly established research team. What I

did not expect was, after I had joined his lab for only one year, Jian Zhou would suddenly leave us. This event

shocked me so much that I could not accept this fact for a long time afterwards. Just as Professor Shuyan Gu

said, Jian Zhou was a real good person. He was an excellent scientist with ambition, knowledge, judgement,

capability and enthusiasm. Jian Zhou, you are the teacher who I will respect my whole life and the friend who

I will benefit from my whole life. I will miss you forever.

记得是在 1997 年，当时学校的科研处处长徐正衸老师告诉我，瞿佳老师为我们联系到了他的好

同学现正在美国的周健，看是否能与他一起开展课题合作研究。那个时期，我们学校老师的主要任务

是教学，尽管我们也想做些研究方面的工作，但缺少学术气氛，不仅无人指导，而且科研条件极差。

恰在此时，周健给我们雪中送炭，与我们合作进行人乳头瘤病毒在温州地区感染和预防的研究。为了

能让我们尽快进入该领域研究，他考虑得非常周到，从美国给我们寄来了研究所需的试剂，最新的研

究文献，给我们带来了技术指导，使我们有机会开展国际领先水平的研究。

1997 年末，周健自温州医学院毕业后第一次访问母校的情景至今历历在目。当时，学校还在学

院路老校区，尽管住宿条件和食堂的就餐条件都不好，但周健还是执意住在学校里，告诉我清晨听着

曾经如此熟悉的广播体操的喇叭声，看到曾经就餐过的食堂进餐和曾经住过的寝室，碰到曾经上过课

的老师和曾经共同求学的同学还是老样子……，感觉真好，似乎又回到了难以忘怀的大学时代。他参

观了我们的实验室，了解了我们的科研条件后，鼓励我们，他会尽力帮助我们开展这项课题的合作研

究，使我们有了继续努力的动力。尽管此前有过多次的通信、电话或传真联系，但对周健了解不多，

这次学术访问，周健给我留下的印象非常深刻，他具有一个真正学者所具有的优秀品质：健谈、幽

默、刚直、率真、认真、负责，尤其他对母校的这份深厚感情令人肃然起敬。

此后，在周健和 Ian Frazer 的指导下，我们真正进入了人乳头瘤病毒（HPV）的研究领域。1998

年 7 月，在 Ian Frazer 和周健的指导和帮助下，我申请到了 WHO（UICC）的课题资助，到澳大利亚

昆士兰大学 CICR，即周健所在的研究所进修学习。此时，对周健有了进一步的认识。周健在学术上

有很深的造诣，发明了 HPV的病毒样颗粒（VLPs），这正是如今在欧美国家上市的宫颈癌疫苗的基

础。他对科学研究非常敬业，认真执着；实验室的人员曾告诉我，如果周健有一个新的“idea”，会

在半夜到实验室进行实验验证，这是一个真正热爱科学的科学家，实在是一个献身科学的典范。周健

虽然身在海外，却非常热爱自己的国家，非常注重自己中国人的形象，深受研究所里华人的爱戴和外

国人的尊敬。他这一优秀品质永远值得我们学习。

记得当年在 CICR时，周健与小依非常关心我们，常带我们去参加当地华人的聚会或邀请我们到

他家作客聚餐，关照我们哪些菜是澳洲特有的，要我们多多品尝，也常与我们一起聊他刚出国时的艰

辛和趣事。使我感到他不仅是个师者，更是个朋友。

周健以自己在乳头瘤病毒研究领域的卓越贡献奠定了其学术地位。记得在 2000 年于西班牙举行

的第 18 届国际乳头瘤病毒会议上，为纪念周健，参会人员在大会开幕式上为周健全体默哀三分钟。

同样，在刚刚闭幕的 2007年于北京举行的第 24 届国际乳头瘤病毒会议上，大会主持者再次介绍了周

健及他的学术成就。使我们大家在为周健英年早逝感到悲伤痛惜时，也为他对科学做出的杰出贡献感

到骄傲，更为他是一位中国人感到自豪。

虽然周健已离开了我们，但我们不会忘记他。我们又怎能忘记他呢？是他带领我们进入了人乳

头瘤病毒研究领域；是他的帮助，为我们开展乳头瘤病毒的研究奠定了基础；是他的指导，我们获得

了 WHO、国家自然科学基金和浙江省自然科学基金的多项课题资助，我们的研究成果多次获得了浙

江省科学技术二、三等奖；是他的敬业精神和学者风范，为我们在做人和做学问时树立了榜样；是他

的发明，惠及了全世界无数的妇女……。我们感激他，惟有更加努力工作，刻苦学习，在乳头瘤病毒

领域研究做出更大的贡献。这才是给他一个最好的回报。

我最早认识周健缘于他的姐姐——我的同事兼好友周凯。她会经常提起她的弟弟，说他读书是如

何的刻苦勤奋，如晚上看书怕打瞌睡就把脚泡在冷水里；做实验是如何的厉害，用仪器做实验时可以

通宵达旦地守在仪器旁，及时记录实验结果；小时侯又是如何的顽皮淘气等。在国内时，我只是偶尔

在医院或她姐姐家见到他，远远地没说过几句话；加之他很高大，我一直都是仰视他，崇拜他。

真正较近距离地与他交往，是在 1997 年和 1998 年。那时，他接纳我去他在澳大利亚昆士兰大学

的实验室里做我的博士研究课题。我亲身受益，他不仅给我提供实验费用，还给我支付住招待所的费

用，使我省下了一大笔开支。周末还常带我回家吃周妈妈做的可口饭菜。有一段时间，他为了让我节

省费用，就干脆让我住在他家里，实在是感激不尽。我亲眼看到，他帮助过很多中国留学生。他手把

手地教我们做实验根本不算什么，对我们的生活更是非常的关心。至今，我还记得他用澳洲的鱼做成

非常非常美味的熏鱼招待客人。他知道小依姐喜欢吃生蚝，在海边看到生蚝就会敲些回家让小依姐品

尝，尽管他自己不爱吃。周末与节假日，他在家里也不歇着，要么继续他的研究工作，要么给草坪除

草，带家人购物。他还是个非常幽默的演说家，我坐他的车去实验室的路上经常听他说好笑的大学往

事，让我一路捧腹笑到实验室。午餐时间，总可见一群人边吃边听他说有趣的事而哈哈大笑，使得紧

张地工作了一上午的身心得到了很好的放松，也使得每次他一喊“lunch time”时，大家无比开心！

通过与他的接触，使我看到了在实验室里是一个具有领袖风范、又富于幽默的科学家，在家里是

一个非常孝顺母亲的儿子，是一个帮着做家务又关心妻子的好丈夫，又是一个给儿子起表率作用的好

父亲，在社会上是一个乐于助人爱憎分明的热心人。当然他首先是个科学家。他具有科学家应有的一

切优秀品质：勤奋研究、积极思考、思维敏锐。既尊重事实，严谨作学问，而更敢于创新，还非常有

个人魅力等，使得他成为 HPV 研究领域的著名科学家。然而让人痛心的是，他不太知道爱护自己的身

体。每天工作到很晚，即使身体不适时也一样。周妈妈常说的话是“生病了也不知道歇”，这也是所

有熟悉他的人的感觉。

他的学术地位自不待我言。我曾在德国 DKFZ 工作一年，他不仅早已在那里留下身影，还给那里

的很多教授和研究人员留下了很深的一个中国科学家的印象，因为他是最早能与外国科学家平起平坐

的少数中国科学家之一。当我悲痛地告知 DKFZ 的同事周健去世的噩耗时，正值有个会议，主席立即

沉痛地宣告一位伟大的科学家的离去，并建议全场默哀数分钟，悼吊他。在那里，所有认识周健的人

都为他的离去惋惜和哭泣！

就这样，我们失去了一位严谨的学者，一位慈祥的师长，一位真正的科学大家。我相信，周健作

为一位科学家，其已大放光芒，并照耀人类。

在一九八八年那个秋末冬初的一天﹐忽然有人敲我们住在剑桥大学小屋的门。初来乍到﹐怎么会

有访客﹖打开门一看﹐见是有位高个儿青年人寻问是否愿意分租房子给他。原本我们已打算不再分租

房子﹐因为所租的房子很小﹐已经有人分了一间卧房﹐只有一间小卧房准备当书房。可是青年人说马

上就要开学﹐房子很难找﹐问我们能否想想办法。看着他的质朴诚恳﹐想到我们刚来时带着时差﹐为

着租房到处艰难地奔波﹐就体谅他的难处﹐容他和我们分租房子﹐但愿他不介意我们的婴儿有可能吵

他﹐他说他很喜欢小孩。就这样，这个淳朴的青年人周健就成了我们在剑桥大学结识的首位中国朋

友。

周健来剑桥做博士后﹐在一间实验室搞病毒研究。我们二人都有一个共同点﹐就是早出晚归﹐整

天泡在实验室做研究。周健因为家人不在身边﹐他工作更为努力﹐时间更长﹐常常过了半夜才回来休

息。我们知道他是家里唯一的儿子﹐但是他却毫无娇生惯养之气﹐反做得一手好菜。有一次我们给孩

子开生日派对﹐他帮我们做大厨﹐居然做得好极了。我们非常感谢他对我们和孩子的关怀及爱护。他

爱整洁﹐总是主动帮助我们一起清理院落﹐打扫屋子﹐不吝惜体力。他想学开车﹐我们也欣然教他学

会开车﹐为此，他常带我们去远处买菜。我们相处得很愉快。

周健善良正直﹐是个知恩感恩的人。他实在不止是位兢兢业业的优秀科学家﹐也是位优秀的丈夫

和父亲。他很爱妻儿﹐常在我们面前夸赞妻子的聪明能干﹐心灵手巧﹐既是位出色的眼科医师﹐又擅

长美容术。他更感慨和怜惜妻子为他付出很多﹐在怀孩子的时候生病﹐为了孩子受了许多痛苦。如今

当天各一方的时候﹐他就越发想念妻儿﹐时常对着他们母子的照片唸叨﹐谈论儿子子晞许多甜蜜的生

活细节﹐希望能够早日重逢。大约不到一年的光景﹐天如人愿﹐周健的夫人终于在他的期盼中来到他

的身边。从那时起﹐他们夫妇就搬去一个宽敞的住处﹐但我们之间时常还会碰面﹐一起郊游或聚餐。

一九八九年的暑假﹐我们全家来到美国访问﹐想不到应聘要留美工作了。我需要和剑桥的导师合

作研究。可是我们的许多实验资料等都还留在剑桥﹐就委托周健帮我们寄到美国。他是一位诚实无伪

的朋友﹐我们完全信赖他。几年之后﹐周健夫妇也搬离剑桥﹐去了澳大利亚做研究。我们都在各自的

科研工作中努力拼搏﹐但我们彼此思念﹐时常通信，相互问侯。可是，有一年圣诞节﹐我们给这位老

朋友发了贺年卡﹐却一去无消息。几经联络﹐也是没有回音。心想这不象我们所认识的周健之为人﹐

即使他发达了，也不至于不理老朋友。他一向是平易近人﹐豁达直爽﹐为什么会中断通讯﹖我们都很

珍惜彼此的友情﹐心里不免常常为此纳闷。

两年前的一天﹐我们在网站上看到一则关于为纪念周健所做的科研贡献而举办的一个会议的消息

﹐那文中的语气让我们从心里发寒。我们有很强烈的意念觉得这不是我们所认识的周健朋友。周健的

身体一向很健康﹐应该是他人。可是报道的科研内容却与周健那么相似。心里说希望一定不是他﹐但

又替他担心﹐故此就顺着线索寻问究竟。其结果让我们难过之极﹐痛惜之极。这时候才确知，我们的

朋友早在八年以前就离开了我们﹐为他所热爱的科研事业而捐躯。我们矫健和蔼、血气方刚的朋友﹐

怎么走得如此匆忙﹖我们真是不敢也不愿相信这个事实。我们为未能够及时安慰他的家人而难过，也

为此深感遗憾。事后从他夫人那里得知﹐周健是在过度紧张的科研工作中积劳成疾﹐未能及时就医，

便在岗位上离去了。我们为此真是痛惜扼腕。

可庆生命的长短并非是衡量人生价值的唯一标准。有些人活着﹐实际上却是死了﹐因为他白占土

地﹐只为私欲而活﹔有些人走了﹐他却永远地活着﹐且是与诸多众人一起活着。周健的人生是极其充

实而有意义的﹐因为他懂得人生的真谛。上苍赋予他卓越的智慧才干﹐周健是那忠心又良善的仆人﹐

他用毕生心血所研究出来的科研成果是举世瞩目的﹐他结出了生命的硕果。我们在TIMES杂志封面看

到周健所做出的杰出贡献：预防子宫颈癌的疫苗问世了﹗我们为这位朋友的在天之灵得以告慰而庆幸

﹗亦为他的家人有上帝天父的护佑而欣慰!

认识周健实在是我们大家的造化。他身上有着许多值得我们所钦佩和学习的美德。他的敬业和为

人﹐对我们有着很大的鼓励。我们会将他介绍给我们更多的朋友﹐传扬他的杰出贡献﹐他的捨己为人

﹐他的美德以及我们对他的永久思念。记得八九年在剑桥的一个晚上，周健和我开玩笑说，谁的研究

以后可以得诺贝尔奖，我当时就曾毫不犹豫地说,他的研究大有希望。如果周健今天仍健在，我相信

他当是诺贝尔奖获得者。他已经成为我们大家心目中了不起的英雄和天使﹐他拯救苍生。

周健永远活在我们心里﹐活在我们许多人中间﹗活在美丽的乐园﹗

One day in the end of autumn or early winter of 1988, the door of our house near

Cambridge University was suddenly knocked. We surprised for the door knocking because

we just arrived at this place. We opened the door and found a tall young man asking us if

he could share the accommodation in the house with us. Originally we had no intention to

further sub-rent the house because the house was very small; another person already shared

the house with us; and we prepared to use a small bed room as a study room. However, the

young man asked us to help due to the fact that it was difficult to find an accommodation at

the beginning of the university term. In consideration of his situation, and his simple and

honest character, we agreed to share the accommodation with him. This young man was

Jian Zhou, our first Chinese friend in the Cambridge University.

Jian’s post Doctorate research in Cambridge focused on virus. Both of us had a common

attitude that we went to work in the early morning and returned to home in the later evening.

We both had spent very long hours in the laboratory. Due to Jian’s family was not with

him at the time, he worked much harder, and usually came back after midnight. We all

knew that Jian was the only son in his family; however, he has never been pampered. He

was a very good cooker, and even cooked many delicious dishes at our daughter’s birthday

party. He liked neatness, helped us to clean house and back yield on his own initiative. We

really appreciated for his caring.

Jian was kind-hearted and fair-minded and he loved his wife very much. He knew his wife

made much more contribution then him to his family, in particular she suffered a lot when

their son was born, so he felt grateful for her. He missed his wife deeply and usually talked

to the photos of his wife and son. Just as his desire, his wife came to Cambridge to reunite

with him in less than a year. They moved to another resident place since then, but we often

met for outing and dining together.

In the summer of 1989, our whole family flied to the United States to conduct co-operate

experimental works with my previous supervisor. It was never thought I was offered a job,

and would stay in the United States. We entrusted Jian Zhou to send all our documents

which were left in Cambridge. Jian Zhou couple also left Cambridge for Australia to do

research works in a few years. We missed each other and often contacted by mails.

The time went fast and several years were over. We exerted the utmost strength in our

respective research duties. We sometimes communicated each other; however, we lost

their reply after we sent a Christmas card in a year. We tried to contact them again, but

nothing happened. That was very unusual, because Jian was amiable, easy of approach and

frank as well. We valued our friendship, and wondered why the communication had

stopped.

One day of two years ago, we found an article regarding a special meeting in

commemoration of Jian Zhou’s scientific contribution in a web site. The manner of

contents made us feel cold from the heart. We thought it might be not the Jian Zhou we

knew because he had good health. However, the research subject was similar to the one

Jian Zhou conducted. We worried about it very much, and were looking for the answer by

following the clue shown in the article. The result that Jian Zhou sacrificed his life for his

loved research career, and already left us 6 years ago made us very sad and deeply regret.

We could not believe it, and wondered why the courageous and upright friend left us in

such a hurry.

We felt sorry and grieved for that we didn’t console Jizn’s family member in time. We

then knew from Jian’s wife that Jian’s sudden braking down was possibly due to constant

overwork over long time. We really felt sad for the tragedy.

Somebody is alive, but he is actually dead. On other hand, somebody was left, but he has

been alive forever. The research achievement of Jian Zhou has been attracted worldwide

attention. We found his outstanding contribution to the development of cervical cancer

vaccine from the front cover of <The Time> magazine. We believe that our friend’s soul in

the heaven would be comforted by the marketing of the vaccine. We also feel happy for

that God will bless Jian’s family member. I do remember one night in 1989 in Cambridge,

Jian joked to me that who would obtain the Nobel award in the future? I replied without

the least hesitation that you had the possibility to get the award. It is my belief that if Jian

Zhou was still alive, he would have been a receiver of the Nobel award in the future.

Jian Zhou will be in our heart forever; he is still with us, and now living in a beautiful

paradise.

周健的风趣和幽默在朋友圈里是出了名的，他带给朋友们无穷的欢乐。时隔十几年了，我现在想

起来还会捧腹大笑，记忆犹新。

那还是我刚来澳州不久的事情，大概是一九九二年左右。在澳洲长期居住的华人朋友大概都知

道，这里的政府有集中收集废弃的旧家具家电做统一处理的作法。每年，政府给每个区域规定一个特

定的时间，让每个家庭把要丢弃的物品放到街边几天，然后统一收集处理。在一些较富裕的区域，澳

洲当地家庭淘汰的物品质量仍然很好，可以继续使用。这样，初来乍到的移民和经济条件较差的家

庭，就会去街边转转，拣一些可以使用的物品回去。其实，这也是贫富调节的一种方法。那个时期的

留学生经济条件有限，对这样的机会是不会视而不见的。

发生在我身上唯一的一次是小依的父亲在晨跑时发现后并通知大家的。电视机、录像机、电风扇

以及各式各样的床、书柜，都是我们的“猎物”。我仍然清楚地记得，周健义不容辞地担当起运输大

队长。我们把收缴到的“战利品”都理所当然地堆放在周健家的车库里。我们加入收战利品的人越来

越多，圈子越滚越大，大家乐此不彼。反复几次之后，周健终于忍不住了，站在塞满“垃圾”的车库

前双手作揖，满脸无奈道：“拜托诸位了，再这样下去，我家都成了垃圾中转站了！还让我在这街上

住下去吗？”我们都被他的这一举动逗得开怀大笑。周健虽然表面上生气，然而细心的他心里却非常

明白，我们其中有的家人刚来团聚，有的马上家人要抵达澳洲，实在真的很需要这些家居用品。他认

真地帮我们将拾来的东西一一试过，一些表面不错其实已经损坏或者根本不运转的家电已经被他甄选

过并重新丢弃到马路边……晚餐时候，他还得意洋洋地对我们大家说道，“哈，我刚才放回路边的东

西好像被人搬走了！我也终于潇洒了一次。” 我记得那是我们在一起最高兴的一次。大家好像吃了

兴奋剂一样，不知疲倦地大笑大闹了大半宿。即使事情过去了这么多年，在我记忆中也鲜有这样欢快

的场面。

周健不仅是一个充满生活乐趣的人，而且还是一个乐于助人的人。当我在想买第一辆车的时候，

打电话，翻报纸，总是因为不能前往看车等种种原因未能实现。终于又一次，我看到一辆车的卖家就

住在他家附近，但我犹豫着周末他是否有时间帮我去看看，于是小心翼翼地给他打了个电话，他便满

口应承下来。不到半个小时功夫，周健回电说，车况不错，车主愿意让价。并且已经帮我把价格从原

来的5300元砍到了3500元。更让人感动的是，他竟然开车到我的住处接我去实地看车。我当时十分喜

欢那辆白色的车，加上车况非常好。说实话，五千块钱也是个非常公道的价格，我不敢相信卖家会降

价出售。周健悄悄地问我，这行吗？我当时直点头。只见他顿了一下，清了清嗓子，一本正经地指着

我对卖家说道：“她是个穷学生，但是真的非常非常喜欢这辆车，您能不能再便宜一些？” 大概是

真的被他的告白感动，车主竟然又降了三百元，并破天荒地答应负担所有检查维修费用。从那一刻

起，我确实对他的口才以及机智刮目相看。这次经历给我的印象是深刻的，即使后来购买新车都没有

那一次那么兴奋不已。

另外一件我很感激周健的事是，他帮我找到了我在澳洲的第一份正式工作。我当时是学生身份，

语言又不是很好，非常希望能找到一份正式工作。周健答应帮我在他的实验室里找一份兼职工作，并

且很快通知我去面试。我那时没有在实验室工作的经验，说实话对这个机会并没有什么信心。周健给

予我很多鼓励并带我到他的实验室参观，而且叮嘱我尽可能多的记住试验仪器的名称，经过他的“恶

补”，我满怀信心地去面试。面试结束后我还跟他炫耀我的临时记忆能力，眉飞色舞的描述我是如何

回答上一个仪器的英文名称，他听后马上高兴地问我：“你真是这么回答的？”我兴奋地说：“对

啊！我就是这么回答的！” 只见他眉头一皱，摇头叹气地道：“错了。你答的是袖珍收录机。这个

仪器名称和袖珍收录机仅差第一个字母”。随后大家憋不住地笑成一团。尽管如此，因为周健的推

荐，我还是得到了这份我以前从没做过的工作，为我以后的找工作奠定了基础。

周健喜欢孩子，每逢学校假期，我们经常轮班照看孩子们，可是更多的时候是把孩子们放在周健

的家里，慈祥的周妈妈总会给孩子们准备丰盛的饭菜，周健更会花时间陪孩子们尽情玩耍，并且尽可

能满足孩子们的一切要求。周健热爱家庭，他打扫泳池，修剪草坪，这都是我在他家度过的几个周末

的亲眼所见，我非常羡慕他们和睦的一家。周健热情，幽默。我们在PA医院工作学习的小群体聚集和

放松的时刻是每天的午餐时间，我们谈天说地，争论国际国家大事。只要有周健在，我们的笑声和争

论就不会间歇。

我记忆中周健的生活趣事实在太多。仅在此例举一二。

我的夫人鲍晓慧和周健的夫人孙小依是好朋友。她们是北医三院眼科的同事。去年末，接到小依

发来的信息，讲正在筹办纪念周健生平的活动，并邀约以朋友的身份写回忆文章。首先，非常感谢对

我们一家作为朋友的尊重与信任。其次，也认为这是非常有意义的活动。

忆起周健，几次提笔，又几次放下，让我很难下笔。这其中对我来说，有个很特别的原因，这就

是周健是在我多年生活经历中所结识的人中，唯一的一个接触时间最短、但却给我留下印象最为深刻

的人。

回忆起来，我和周健真正相处的时间实际上非常短暂，前后两次加起来也只有两三天的时间。第

一次是在1996年的春天，我由俄亥俄州的哥伦布市到芝加哥接来美探亲的父母，从而有机会认识周

健。虽是初次相识，他却象老朋友一样热情招待我们，关心有加，帮助很大。另一次是在同年的夏

天，周健夫妇为安排他们的爱子Andy和我们的儿子Jing在我们家里共度一段暑期，我们再次相见。虽

是短短数日，周健的人品、学识、和才华，给我留下了真切难忘的记忆。

首先，周健是一个待人诚恳、乐于助人、热爱生活的人。虽然是初识，可能是彼此在年龄及其它

一些背景的相似之处，我们谈话很投缘，让我感觉彼此的关系近了许多。有几件小事，更使我感动。

当时，从谈话中得知，他正在主持一个研究室的工作，任务繁忙，压力很大。但是，在我们逗留期

间，他仍是花费了很多时间为我们忙前忙后，帮助解决了我们许多困难。我至今还清楚记得，他只是

在利用我们短暂离开汽车去接机的时间，抓紧翻看科研资料，而对我们却未有丝毫怠慢。后来，从我

父母那里得知，在他们途经芝加哥回国时，当时周健的身体情况一度不好，搬动稍大些的行李都很吃

力，但还是在两位同事的帮助下，把他们顺利送上飞机。对我们，他却从未提起自己的情况和困难。

尽管过去多年，但每每想起此事，仍让我感慨不已。从和周健一家的短暂接触中，也能清晰感觉到，

他是一个非常热爱生活，注重家庭责任，格外关爱孩子的人。这在他和家人的亲密感情以及其爱子平

日的幸福表情中即可见一斑。

谈到周健的事业，以及为此所做出的贡献时，我想，每一个关心他、关心这项事业的人都会清楚

知道，其意义是多么重大。而在此，我想谈及的却是他作为一个学者的人品，这些是在我记忆中非常

令我珍惜的部分。尽管是初识，而我们彼此的交流却发展很快，话题猎涉很广，但谈论更多的还是有

关学术与科研方面彼此感兴趣的话题。我记得那时他已经在抗癌疫苗的研究项目上取得了突破性的进

展，但我能感觉到，他对待科学成就的态度一点不浮躁，不功利，始终对科研工作的不断探索表现出

浓厚的兴趣。这在现今的社会，即便是知识界，就作人的标准而言，也是非常难能可贵的。

时间如矢，回忆中的情景已是十多年前的事了，而周健英年早逝，匆匆离去，也已近九载。常言

虽说，时间会淡化人的记忆，但当年接触中的所有情景却依然沥沥在目。今天在这里作为朋友来回忆

周健，使我非常欣慰的是，周健为其辛勤耕耘、献出毕生精力的事业终于获得了硕果，千万人的健康

因此而获益。而周健那种做人的朴实，对朋友的坦诚，对家庭的责任与关爱，以及作为一个学者的优

秀品格，则更是他留给大家的一笔宝贵的精神财富，是我们可以永远拥有而又应当非常珍惜的。

我在 1985 年认识周健，当时他在北京病毒所跟我妈妈学习分子生物技术。当时的我还在念小学

六年级，经常在放学后混在实验室里面看着大人们做实验。

我妈妈是个嘴快手快的人，经常会听到她开玩笑地念叨周健，“真是笨呐！”我这个实验室里的

小跟屁虫，也很快学会了这句口头禅。周健很喜欢陪我玩一种扑克牌的算数游戏，四张牌，加减乘除

算出二十四。不知他是不是有意让我这个小他十几岁的小丫头开心，我总是算得比他快。这个时候，

就是我洋洋得意的学着我妈妈的样子念叨他，“真是笨呐！”。现在想来，恐怕没有几个人能有机会

“笑话”他“笨”呢。

二月二十四号，是我的生日，也是周健的生日，我们的忘年交也就因为这个关系更加亲密了一

层。他在我妈妈的实验室里工作的第一年，在我生日那天，我妈妈告诉周健，今天她要早一点回家，

是女儿的生日，要吃长寿面。第二天，我才听说，周健在我妈妈离开后才想到，“生日？今天好像也

是我的生日呢！”对于一个十几岁的小女生来说，我当时实在很难想象谁会忙得连自己的生日都不记

得了。从此以后，我们每到生日前后都会聚一聚。后来周健去了国外，每年都会记得要在我们的生日

那天打一通电话，或者寄一张卡片。

1999 年的生日那天，我们还在电话上讨论明年一月要去澳洲看网球公开赛，顺便可以去看他的新

家。不过两个星期后，我放完春假回到家，就从电话留言机上听到了周健过世的消息。这简直就如晴

天霹雳。到现在，这么多年来，每到我们的生日，我都会记得，我有一个众人仰望、却从不忘记在繁

Jian in My Mind

I first met Jian in 1985, when he's studying molecular biotechnology with my mom. I was only 12 years old

back then, always like to spend time after school in the labs watching people doing their stuff.

My mom is just like Jian in a way, always the fastest, and best in the lab, always speak her mind. I remember

this one comment Jian would always get from my mom- "too sloooooow"! Jokingly, of course. Back then, I

liked to play a card game with Jian, using 4 cards at a time, calculate the face number to be 24. I don't know if

Jian did it on purpose, but I would always do it faster than Jian, most of the time. I made sure to mock him

with the same line my mom used to laugh at him - "toooooo slooooooow!" I guess not a lot of people had the

chance to “laugh at” him being too slow like I did.

February 24th, is my birthday, and Jian’s as well. Our friendship became that much tighter because of this

special bound. In the first year Jian worked in my mom's lab, on the day of my birthday, my mom told him

that she needed to leave work a little early, because it is my birthday. The next day, I heard Jian realized that

it was his birthday too after my mom left the office. For a teen-age girl, it is hard to believe that someone can

forget his own birthday for work! Since then, would always try to get together on our birthday, give each

other a call, or a birthday card.

On our birthday in 1999, we were talking about going to the Australian Open next January, and I can also go

visit his new home. But, just 2 weeks later, I heard the news on my answering machine returning from my

spring break trip.

Till now, every birthday, I’ll remember that I have a big brother who always cared for me.

摊开的笔记本还没合上。

电脑里的论文写到一半,

黑板上涂满了他跃动的遐想。

电话里留着大家的问候,

大大小小的事, 都等他回来商量。

临行前披在妻子身上的外套,

还带着他的气息, 一如他仍在身旁。

他, 却已去了。独自上路, 悄无声响。

踏着一贯急促的脚步, 他走得那么匆忙。

慈母、爱妻、幼子、伙伴、从睡梦中惊醒，

他已远去, 从此天各一方。

再看不见他孩子般的笑容, 神采飞扬；

再看不见他不息的身影, 日夜奔忙。

为什么, 为什么让他在如日中天时殒落?

为什么, 只给了他短短 42 年的时光?

是上帝亲自接走了他,

轻轻把他抱起, 贴在自己的胸膛。

“来吧, 孩子。你原来自天上, 再跟我回天堂。

交托给你的使命, 你完成得这样辉煌。

千百年来第一次,

面对一种癌症, 人类不再惊慌。

是上帝亲自接走了他,

不忍看他把多少重担压在自己的肩上。

“歇下吧, 孩子。我给你的原是血肉之躯,

你把它用作钢樑铁柱, 撑起恢弘的殿堂。

歇下吧, 孩子。卸下你的重负, 坐在我的脚旁。

你已打完了那美好的仗。

是上帝亲自接走了他,

为他在天上预备了安憩的地方。

每当黎明前, 有一颗星低垂眨眼,

那便是他, 对着我们凝视遥望。

拂晓的星, 把我们的前头照亮,

它指引的路, 从脚下通往远方。

当我们爬山涉水, 登上山岗,

再听春风秋水把他的故事传扬。

The lamps in the lab are still burning bright

His books are open beneath the shining lights.

Images on the screen are starting to fade

The blackboard is covered with sketches he’s made.

His telephone is full of memos from friends

Seeking answers to many experiments and trends.

On the back of his chair is the coat that he wore

Still with his warmth from the long day before.

His departure was hurried but he was always on track

He didn’t know when he left he would never come back.

When his family and friends awoke in the morning

They learned he’d been taken without any warning.

They would not hear his laughter with its childish delight

Nor see him over the microscope, day and night.

With his drive and brilliance it seems so unkind

To allow only 42 years for such a beautiful mind.

But God has decided that his journey should end

He’s completed the task assigned by the Lord grand.

“Come to me, child. You are deserving of rest

You have given mankind the best of your best.

To you I entrusted a mission so hard

You’ve accomplished it with all your heart.

This killer of women has been finally subdued

Mothers and daughters world over are indebted to you.”

Though now he’s returned from whence he began

The world has been changed forever by this man.

He was created like others from flesh and from blood

He has travelled through life with the forces of good.

His resolution and drive were like iron and steel

Which after his death were proudly revealed.

He’s finished his race and fought the good fight

And is fondly remembered for the things he’s done right.

God has claimed him, and now he is home

His place is in heaven near God’s glorious throne.

An angel who guides with its permanent light.

翻开我的照相簿, 一张张画面记录了十年前我们在芝加哥的工作和生活场面。我们在芝加哥的工

作和生活是丰富多采的，有芝加哥华人科学家和专业人士组织的各种节日活动,有自编自排的文艺表

演、歌咏比赛、排球比赛、也有中文学校举办的卡拉 OK、聚餐等等活动。画面上，童年的孩子们是

那样的天真无邪, 在异域他乡相聚的朋友们笑容可鞠，无比真诚。大多数的活动里都有孙小依的身影

和她的灿烂笑容,很少有周健参加的场面。哦,这张不是有周健吗? 还是在打乒乓球呢？还是男女混合

双打,看他挥拍的动作挺象样子的,其球技可不敢恭維。我还清楚地记得,那是 1995 年夏天一个周六晚

上,在我们家,是我打了 3-4 次电话才把周健从 Loyola 医学院的实验室里请出来。这是难得的一次周

健参与我们的周末聚会。

我是在华人办的希林中文学校认识周健和小依的。1994 年夏天，为了让我们的孩子在美国能学到

中国文化，我们在芝加哥的华人组织起来，创办了希林中文学校。每周六下午，大家送孩子来上中

文。周健和小依那时刚來美国,也把他们的儿子送来读中文。因我们同来自杭州,所以认识后倍感亲

切，交往特多。周健是一个非常容易相处的人,但说話不多。小依总是笑眯眯的，非常活跃,参与我们

所有的活动。

我们在芝加哥的华人朋友大多在各大公司和大学工作,平时工作繁忙。周六是大家都非常期盼的,

孩子可来中文学校上学,家长们则可参加各种活动，打排球,唱卡拉 OK 等, 放松一下，减轻精神压

力。大多数时侯都是小依送儿子来上学的。即使是周末，周健也是在实验室里忙着。他的勤奋和敬业

是众所周知的。有时他亦来，但总帶着他的研究资料来。我还记得小依也帶着她眼科考试的资料来中

文学校学习。Loyola 医学院的同事们说，周健在那里两年,他每周工作 7 天,每天十几个小时在实验

室埋头研究。他的刻苦敬业精神感动了许多人。

实际上，周健是很活跃且相当幽默的一个人。他说话不多,但一旦说起来,总让人捧腹大笑。他和

上海来的徐涛住两对门。两人只要一碰面,就你一句我一言,互相调侃，有时还动手动脚的。这时周健

象变了个人似的,让我们大家很开心。

周健平时工作非常忙。有一次我们中文学校结束后,应小依的邀请到他们家,周健刚从实验室回来,

看到我们在,他马上下厨房,不一会就烧出了很地道的杭州菜, 小依总是在边上笑嘻嘻地做着帮手。在

家,他是一位模范丈夫。

周健待朋友非常诚恳,有事找他,他总是尽心尽力帮忙。有位朋友回澳大利亚,当时工作机会很少,

找工作很困难。我给周健写了一封信,介绍这位朋友,周健很热心地给予了帮助。

我们眼中的周健，是个勤奋拼搏的学者,博学多才,诚恳又具幽默。相识、相聚虽不到两年,周健

永远留在我们芝加哥朋友们的记忆里。

我的邻居周健

第一次认识周健是在 1990 年的一次朋友聚会上。他们全家老少四口，妻子小依、儿子子晞和他

母亲陈洁一块来的。子晞那时还小，问他叫什么名字，回答说叫“晞晞”。他反问我叫什么？为了取

笑，我顺口说我叫“哈哈”，“嘻嘻哈哈”也。从此周健一家人记住了我这个“哈哈”，我们两家也

缘此相互往来，渐成契友。

我们先是一前一后买房，但发现两家后院竟相连。后来又相邻买地盖房。总之人家说我们有缘。

其实人生就是梦，相识便是缘。我相信缘分。

健性格开朗，喜欢开玩笑。朋友聚会时，他满嘴胡言，常弄得满堂大笑。我们那时经常说,“要

解馋，开 Party；要想笑，找周健”。由于我们两家住的近，来往频繁，平常没时间，周末常在一

起。健的母亲陈洁，我们都亲切地称她“周妈妈”，她把我跟妻子当成她自己的孩子一样呵护。我们

平常家中的事，无论巨细，都愿跟她讲。我喜欢吃青苹果，健在买东西时总忘不了买几个青苹果留给

我来时吃。小依喜欢吃零食，我们家也常备着些小点心，等他们来时吃。俗话说“远亲不如近邻”，

我们两家在一起度过了一段非常快乐、美好的时光。

健喜爱户外活动，我们两家就经常在假期结伴游玩，赏花、观景、垂钓、捉蟹、露营、野炊等

等。

那时我跟妻子都在读书，为了毕业论文整天忙碌。印象中，健和小依也是整天忙碌，周末和节假

日经常去实验室做实验。同样是忙，但目的不同，我们是为学位，他们是为科学。多年后，回想起

来，健没有那些年的勤奋，就没有后来的成绩。健的身体不好，也是他过于勤奋、积劳成疾的结果。

健的死，对我震动极大。印象中死对我来说是件非常遥远的事情，可它就实实在在地出现在我面

前，而且是我的好朋友。早年中国有个电影叫《人到中年》，讲的就是中年知识分子为科学事业夭折

的故事，这里有社会环境的压力，但也与知识分子本身爱事业甚于生命有关。人对财富（应该包括物

资和精神/知识财富）的追求是无止境的，就像是那无穷无尽的数字零。可身体是所有零前面的那个

壹字，没有了这个壹字，后面的零再多，又有什么意义呢。健的死，可惜、令人扼腕！但愿大家都吸

取教训，热爱工作、珍惜生命。

健辞世九年了，他和 Ian Frazer 教授共同研制的人类宫颈癌疫苗经临床验证后也在全世界范围

应用了，这是世界上第一支癌症疫苗，也是健毕生努力的结果。可他却在功成名就时悄然逝去了。有

人在谈论宫颈癌疫苗时，预测它有获诺贝尔奖的潜力，这的确令人心动。曾几何时，搞科学的人都不

敢奢谈诺贝尔奖。可它也许就发生在我们身边，这难道不令人兴奋吗？健是科学的骄傲，也是我们华

人的骄傲！我愿在天堂也跟他为邻。

My Neighbour Jian

I first meet Jian at a friend’s party in 1990. He came along with his wife Xiao-yi, son Zi-xi and his

mother Chen Jie. Zixi was a young boy at that time and I remembered asking what his name was. “Xi-xi”, he

answered. “What is yours?” “Ha-ha”, “Xi-xi-Ha-ha” I replied without thinking. From then on, Jian’s family

remembered my name as “Ha-ha”, this was the commencement of our good friendship.

At different times, both of our families purchased houses on two separate streets, but found out later that

the backyards of our two houses shared a common rear boundary. A few years later, we independently

purchased adjacent allotments in another suburb and built two new homes. It must have been fate for us to

know each other.

Jian had a pleasant, mature attitude, and loved to make jokes. Every time, when there was a party, he

was always telling some humorous stories. We often say, “To enjoy food, organise a party. To enjoy jokes,

have Jian come to the party”. Jian and my family have maintained regular contact. Often we visited Jian’s

mother, we all called her Mother Zhou because she always treated us like her own children, always cooking

delicious meals. She was a great listener and we loved to tell her everything, sadness and happiness. I like

green apples, so Jian always made sure to have some for me even though he did not like them. Xiaoyi loves

finger food, so my wife and I always made sure to have some in stock at home whenever they came over.

There is an old saying in China, “Your next door neighbour is better than your distant relatives”. Together we

had some of the most memorable and happiest moments of my life.

In my memory, Jian always went to their lab, even on weekends and holiday breaks. At that time my

wife and I were also busy doing our PhD studies. But while we were busy with our degrees; Jian was busy

with his research. It is obvious that the hard work was rewarded with the results of his scientific research, but

it had taken a toll on Jian’s health.

Jian loved outdoor activities, we often travelled together, nature watching, sight seeing, fishing, crabbing

and camping. Jian’s death sent a shock wave through me. I had never thought about death before, and it never

occurred to me that it could happen. Yet it did, it happened to my good friend.

There is a movie in China called The Middle Aged, a story of an intellectual who worked extremely hard

on scientific research but lost his health in the end. The middle aged Chinese intellectuals in the movie carried

a great deal of responsibility from the society, but the neglect of their own health contributed to their death.

The desire for wealth (material wealth and spiritual wealth) is of paramount importance for middle aged

Chinese intellectuals. These desires are like endless zeros in large numbers, the health of the human body is

the digital number one in front of all the zeros, without this important digital one, the endless zeros are

meaningless. We must take care of our health as a primary concern, in order to enjoy work and treasure life.

It has been 9 years since Jian’s tragic death. The vaccines developed by Jian and Professor Ian Frazer

have been widely used around the world. This is the first cancer vaccine ever in human history. It is Jian’s

greatest achievement. But sadly he cannot share the enjoyment and success. It has been reported that the

scientific value of the cancer vaccine may have the potential to win a Nobel Prize. It is an exciting proposal,

the Nobel Prize has always seemed far away from many people, but it may not too far from us this time. Jian

is the pride of Science. He is also the pride of the Chinese community. I would love to be his neighbour again

in heaven.

人类之福，华人之光 ——缅怀华裔科学家周健博士

“壮志未酬身先死，常使英雄泪沾襟。” 这两句诗，表达了人们对历史上那些为追求崇高理想

而奋斗终身，尤其对那些已经成功在望，却不幸先逝的先行者们强烈的痛惜之情。周健博士恰恰就是

这样一位在医学科学领域，尤其是在研究疫苗防治癌症方面取得辉煌成就，却不幸英年早逝的先行

者。

周健于 1957 年出生于浙江杭州。1982 年于温州医学院毕业后，先后在杭州，河南和北京的医学

院学习和工作。1984 年在浙江医科大学读硕士研究生时，便开始了人类乳头瘤状病毒的研究。人们

尽管早已知道妇女子宫颈癌和其他许多疾病都是由于这种病毒引起，但由于这种病毒极其微小，且不

能在细胞里培养，因而难以用人工的方式去合成，也就无法研究其致病的机理，所以尽管研究者众，

却始终未能取得突破，而周健在国内就发表了多篇这方面的论文。1987 年 2 月 2 日的人民日报就以

头版报道了正在河南医科大学读博士研究生的周健，对人类乳头状瘤病毒的研究取得进展的消息。

1988 年他在北京医科大学进行博士后研究期间，赴英国剑桥大学免疫学和癌症研究中心，继续从事

这方面的研究。他首先提出了病毒样颗粒的产生及其概念，并开始了临床试验。这是一种大有潜力的

疫苗，可预防宫颈癌的发生。

昆士兰大学的澳大利亚癌症研究中心主任 Ian Frazer 教授就是在剑桥大学认识了周健，并力邀

周健来澳大利亚一起工作。1990 年，周健在结束了与剑桥的合约之后，便应邀来到昆士兰大学的癌

症研究中心， 此后 Frazer 便成为了周健的研究合作者和顶头上司。此时周健仍继续致力于利用 DNA

重组技术，人工合成乳头瘤状病毒的疫苗，并取得成功。因而就在周健来澳州的第二年即 1991 年，

周健便与 Ian Frazer 教授联名申请了 DNA 重组技术人工合成乳头瘤状病毒疫苗的专利， 这一专利比

美国整整早了一年。据说澳美两国还为此打了一场知识产权的官司，最后握手言和，成为两国合作开

发，进行世界范围内的临床试验。此后周健在人类乳头瘤状病毒的研究领域里，获得了高度的国际声

誉。

周健也是一位高产的作者。从 1982 年开始，他在国际一流学术杂志上发表了五十多篇论文 ,并

拥有近十项发明专利。Frazer 教授说，直到现在，他的研究中心里尚未有人能获得如此之成就。

Frazer 还说：“周健在分子病毒学领域 10 年中取得的成就，是许多科学家在 30 年中也无法企及

的。”并一再强调，“他是我个人最好的朋友和最优秀的科研同事。”

1994 年昆士兰大学授给周健医学博士学位。1995 年周健应聘去美国 Loyola 大学任副教授之职，

进一步深入研究人类乳头瘤状病毒的结构及其作用，并以惊人的速度发表了许多高质量的论文。1996

年也许有感于昆士兰的美好环境和气候，尤其是真诚待他的 Frazer 教授，周健又回到了昆士兰大

学，被聘为高级研究员，并任乳头瘤状病毒研究室主任。1999 年逝世前不久又晋升为首席狮子王研

究员。当时他研究成功的乳头瘤状病毒疫苗即将全面开始临床试验，可惜的是正当成功在望的关键时

刻，周健却突然与世长辞，恰是一颗科研新星的陨落，造成了澳洲医学界的巨大震惊，更给他的亲

人，尤其是他的娇妻爱子造成此恨绵绵无绝期的漫长的伤痛！凡认识周健的人都无不哀伤他的英年早

逝！笔者细想之下，周健的早逝是意料之外却在情理之中。试想出生在 1957 年代的那一代人，其悲

惨遭遇是人所共知的，能从中脱颖而出，取得如此辉煌的成就，除了周健本人的天分之外，更主要的

是依靠他本人争分夺秒的勤奋，正如 Frazer 教授谈到他在剑桥见到周健的印象时说：“周健是最勤

奋的研究人员，不分白天黑夜，凡我去实验室时，总会看到他在那里努力工作，我总是他实验室里的

打扰者。”这说明周健是在呕心沥血地工作，他在工作中透支着他年轻的生命。周健的岳父、也是笔

者的挚友孙源泉先生，曾不胜唏嘘地对笔者说：“周健是累死的。” 这句话怎不令人闻之泪下。

令人欣慰的是，周健过世以后，临床试验继续顺利地进行。前后经历了三十三个国家的二万五千

名妇女的临床试验，证明了周健和 Frazer 教授共同研究成功的疫苗，对预防子宫颈癌 100%地有效，

且无任何副作用。这一消息由澳美双方于 2005 年 10 月 7 日在纽约宣布：“预防子宫颈癌新突破，人

类乳头瘤状病毒疫苗三期临床试验成功。” 这一宣布，在世界范围内引起了巨大的轰动，澳洲报纸

《The Courier Mail》10 月 8- 9 日周末版，用头版大字标题——“昆士兰团队攻克子宫颈癌”。澳

洲的各大电视台也以头条新闻着力报道了这一重大消息！诚然，如此重大的喜讯，怎不令人兴奋！须

知，澳洲有生育能力的妇女中，有 70%曾被乳头瘤状病毒感染过，也就是说，澳洲的大多数妇女都生

活在子宫颈癌的死亡威胁的阴影之下。而周健的发明将使子宫颈癌与妇女彻底绝缘！这是全球妇女之

福，当然也是全人类之福。人们在庆幸之余，自然会更加怀念带来这一福祉的造福者—周健博士。事

实上，这些日子以来，周健的同事们，朋友们，在这一意料中的胜利到来之际，无不更加思念昔日的

带头人和“战友”，纷纷打电话向周健的亲属表示庆贺和慰问。作为周健最亲密的合作伙伴，Ian

Frazer 在纽约宣布这一条新闻时，也多次提到周健的名字。在《The Courier Mail》报道 Frazer 为

“神奇的人”（Miracle Man）的时候，也报道了 Ian Frazer 对周健的痛惜和思念之情。Frazer 对

记者说：“令人悲伤的是，周健未能在他去世之前看到这项成果被公开承认。” 这也说明了 Ian

Frazer 是一位有良知、重情义的科学家。

Frazer 不仅表彰周健的贡献，更赞扬了周健的中国心。在周健的追悼会上， Frazer 特别提到了

“周健从未忘记他的根，周健是华人社团的一位活跃分子。” 许多著名的华人科学家往往都把自己

的成就与自己的祖国联系在一起。诺贝尔奖获得者、物理学家杨振宁和中国著名的数学家陈省三教授

都曾异口同声地表明：“我们的成就只是证明中国人绝对不比外国人差。” 同样，周健尽管是昆士

兰大学的医学博士，但是他在所有人的面前，都颇为自豪地说：“我是中国培养出来的土博士。”好

一个“土”字！它恰恰印证了周健的中国“根”。Frazer 说：“周健无疑是一位世界村的村民，却

不忘架设沟通与中国的桥梁，在澳大利亚癌症研究中心与自己的母校温州医学院之间，连接了一条强

有力的纽带，成功地使乳头瘤状病毒疫苗在中国进行了临床试验。”周健以自己的行动表明了他的中

国心。但天有不测风云。1999 年，周健回中国进行学术访问，突然生病，现代医术却无回天之术，

一代英才就这样离开了我们。但他的事迹又一次向世人表明：“中国人绝不比外国人差。” 周健无

愧是中国培养的“土”博士，他无怨无悔的爱着自己的祖国大地，正如诗人艾青所说：“为什么我眼

里常含泪水，因为我对这土地爱得深沉。”这句诗表达了包括周健在内的一切爱国华人的中国情结。

周健好友生前趣事点滴

天苍苍，地茫茫，周健离开我们已有九个年头了。打开相册，翻开记忆，往事历历历在目。我好

像又回到了十多年前和周健、小依、子晞朝夕相处的时时刻刻。

那是 1994 年的春天，我们全家从纽约搬迁到芝加哥，在西郊的 Willowbrock 租了一套公寓。两

周以后，周健一家也由澳洲搬来，住我们家正对门。一个单元就我们两家。我们两家的友谊就是从那

时候开始的。

在美国这个若大之土地上，两个原来互不相识的中国家庭，不约而同地来到这个角落。我们都是

同龄人，有着相同的生活及文化背景，两家的儿子又是同月同日生，只是周健的儿子比我们的儿子大

一岁，这注定了我们有着许多共同语言，共同爱好。由于刚到芝加哥，人生地不熟，我们两家常常结

伴，一起游览芝加哥风光 ，并同时融入了当地的华人社区。

相处的时间久了，我们逐渐地对周健和他的家庭有所了解。

大家都知道周建是个杰出的科学家，他对工作兢兢业业，必然硕果累累。他是我们海外华人

的骄傲。但对于我们来说，周健更是个活泼幽默的风趣朋友，一个抬头不见低头见的邻居，一个常常

和我先生抬杠子的家伙。和周健一家在芝加哥交往了几年，做了整整二年的邻居。在这二年中，我们

两家走得很近，互相关爱，建立了深厚的友情。周健不是那种一本正经、科学怪人似的科学家，在我

们的心目中，他朴实、亲切，又有点腼腆却非常幽默。记得有一次，我们聚在一起吃葡萄时，他开玩

笑说：澳洲虽产葡萄，可我从来没吃过这么好的葡萄，为什么？因为每次买来一大箱的葡萄，我妈就

把快要烂了的捡出来先吃，结果，我们每天都吃那快要烂了的葡萄，直到最后一颗。把大伙儿逗得前

仰后翻的。

他待人和蔼可亲，我们都把他当自家人。记得那时为了孩子们进出方便，我们常把两家的大

门打开，整个楼层四通八达，周健常常下班后就往我家串门，见我婆婆做的晚饭放在桌上，伸手就东

抓一块，西捞一口，我婆婆看见了就急：你都吃了，我儿子回来吃什么？周健说，我就尝一点点，又

没全吃光喽! 结果我先生回来他还来个“恶人先告状”：你妈真小气，小菜碰也不让我碰！

不仅如此，周健还是个充满爱心的人。记得我们的小女儿刚出生不久，有次朋友聚会，我们忙得

不亦乐乎，周健就一直抱着我们的小女儿，不停地拍啊摇啊抖啊。朋友跟他开玩笑，你是不是想要个

女儿啊？他说，这就是我的干女儿。

周健同时还是个调皮的大孩子。有一次几家朋友在健身房里活动，周健拉响了火警阀门，结果消

防车火速赶到现场。事后问他为什么要拉警报器，他说，想知道拉了以后会怎样。

……

回忆永远是美好的！周健虽已远走苍穹，遥不可及，但他的音容笑貌，却永远伴随着我们……很

近很近……就在我们每一个人的心中！

周健的个体生命是短暂的，悲剧性的短暂，但周健创造出的生命的价值却是恒久的，历史性的恒

久。周健个体生命的形式已经不复存在，但是周健以其生命的代价换取了千千万万生命的存在，并将

一代又一代地存在下去。当一个人的生命形式以四海的广度，以世代的长度转换为群体的生命形式，

他将永生，恢弘地永生。一个人的生命价值以群体的存在，以众生的活力而再现，他将无价，永恒的

无价。周健，生生不息。

生命的长度是有限的，而生命的意义并不在于其长度。但是我们却仍然痴迷地追求个体生命的长

度，执着地笃信“好死不如赖活”的信条。当群体的生命在以个体生命为代价在延伸，在无限地延

伸， 那种生命的长度则是无限的，那种生命的意义则是辉煌的，无限的辉煌。这不在于我们的痴迷

和执着，这不可遇也不可求，这是上天赐给人类的礼物，珍贵的礼物。周健，天上飞来。

生命的高度是无限的，生命的崇高就在于其高度。尽管生命的存在并不需要其高度，尽管我们望

高兴叹：因为峣峣者易折，因为高处不胜寒，因为青天蜀道难。巨星天边高挂，那很美。但是当巨星

从高空坠落，粉身碎骨化成繁星满天，星光灿烂，这又何尝不是美？巨星的生命正以这种方式延续，

升华，这就是生命崇高的意义所在，这就是生命高度的哲学命题。周健，一览众山。

生命的形式改变是以悲剧开始，却在母亲姐妹、妻子女儿的万众欢歌笑语声中转换，伸展，没有

结尾；周健的生命以悲剧结尾，却在中国，在澳洲，乃至全世界以辉煌和无限重新开始。周健，永垂

不朽！

In Memory of Dr. Jian Zhou

Ping Bu and Liang Qiaoi

Dr. Jian Zhou’s death was sudden. We remember when we heard the news nine years ago; we simply could

not believe it. Dr. Zhou was too young but as it slowly occurred to us, we have realized that Dr. Zhou indeed

lived his life wonderfully. He was a great scientist who developed a cure for cervical cancer. His loss is

indeed a great one for the research community, his pioneering work in the field of vaccines is unforgettable.

The world has taken his original works and put them into clinical use.

We met Jian and Xiao-yi in Chicago (1994); they helped us to establish ourselves in a totally new country

even though they themselves had arrived in USA only a month earlier. We had our first dinner in Chicago

with them in their apartment, Dr. Zhou had prepared a fish and crab dinner by himself for us; it was indeed a

great pleasure meeting them and their unforgettable hospitality. He was their with us to buy our first car, he

used an old bicycle pump to put air in an air mattress a remarkable event never forgotten, his efforts to make

us feel at home. He was a true gentleman, I remember when he first gave me a ride home from work he

opened the door for me and that was truly remarkable.

We visited Jian and his family in Australia, they showed us around Brisbane and we stayed at their place as

always he was a very hospitable person. He took great efforts in digging a bamboo root to make a special

ethnic dish which was an excellent cuisine. We remember that they had actually moved back to Australia only

recently, they did not have a great deal of furniture in the house. We had fun in purchasing the dining table in

mid-summer from a sale by owners who were moving, what a joyful memory. That’s the trademark of

Dr.Zhou he always wanted to make people happy.

All the memories we have shared with him will forever be cherished and remembered. We should all be

thankful that we were given the chance to have known a man named Dr. Jian Zhou.

每天在我八点去实验室前，周健博士学生就把实验室所有的卫生打扫干净。每天工作到深夜。有一

次，我见他提水，两只手一只一桶水，每桶 25公斤，我要帮他，他不让帮。他学习很勤奋，乐于助

人，为人忠厚，性情活泼开朗。同志们听说他的离世，都很感到惋惜，科学界失去了一颗明星。

在成年人当中，能够笑得如此率真，坦荡的人并不多见。一个能笑得坦坦荡荡的人不仅自己活得真实

精彩，也会让身边的亲朋好友如沐甘霖…

小依，

流着泪看完你写的纪念文章。真是太令人感动了。也让我想起曾经和健在一起时的点点滴

滴……

他一直是吴振宇生活、事业上的楷模。吴振宇把他当作人生道路上的目标。亦步亦趋的跟随着他

的足迹。应该说不光吴振宇，而是他身边几乎所有的这些朋友， 无一不尊重他，敬爱他。那么多的

人曾经得到过他无私的帮助，无论是生活上还是事业上、工作上，他对朋友总是有求必应，不顾自

己。

他的离去是那么的突然，那么的悴然……他那爽朗的笑声好像还在耳边回响，他潇洒的身影还历

历在目，而他那喜欢辩论的慷慨激昂的声音更是记忆犹新，但他却已经离开我们快九年了。

我也想借此机会，希望你能有更美好的新人生。斯者逝也，请把这段美好记忆永远地珍藏在心

中，珍惜新的生活，活得更好，更幸福。

我与周健只有不多的几次接触，与他的妻子小依是朋友。他给我的印象是开朗幽默、热爱生活、

懂得生活。他自己不唱卡拉 OK，却给他爱唱歌的妻子买了高级音响设备。那天我去他家，小依邀我

唱歌。我刚一张口，从里屋传来周健的叫好声，接着又跑出来看看到底是唱盘里录的还是在场的人唱

的。之后我们参观他家，发现阳台上挂着一只正在风干中的酱鸭，小依美滋滋地说：“是周健做

的。”使在场的朋友吃惊不小。他谦卑地说：“献丑献丑。等鸭子风干好了请你们来品尝”。

还有一次打沙滩排球。一开打就看出这不是周健的长项，与排球搏斗他很是费了番努力，可球就

是不配合，一到他那里就出局。朋友们看出了破绽，球频频冲他而去，搞的他手忙脚乱，应接不暇，

大伙开心大笑。周健不恼不怒，一边和大家一起开怀大笑，一边照样奋不顾身地接球追球，那欢乐让

人难忘。后来他们离开了芝加哥，可那沙滩排球场上的欢笑长久地留在了我的记忆里。

一晃，周健已经离开我们九年了。周健、小依夫妇是我们最好的朋友之一。

总想写篇文章怀念好朋友，但是，每每想起这件事，心里总是有种说不清的滋味：是苦，是涩，

还是痛？

我所认识的周健，不只是位杰出的学者，更是一位再平凡不过的男人。他懂得生活，有情趣，更

是那么幽默；他懂得爱，以他博大的爱心，爱自己的家人，爱同志，爱朋友，爱世间的每个人，更会

去关怀人， 照顾人和体贴人。

周健的魅力在于他心中有一份恒久悲悯的大爱，有一股坦荡善良的真气。
