MOB FILMS Subgenre of crime films dealing with organized crime, often the Mafia.

    Commonly overlapped with film noir.

Focus on the rise to power of an organized gang, sometimes focusing on the gang's leader, as well as their fall. The message is almostalways crime doesn't pay, though sometimes it focuses on their humanity making it more about a means to an end.

Widely regarded as the best crime films.

Developed around the sinister actions of criminals or gangsters, particularly bank robbers, underworld figures, or ruthless h oodlums whooperate outside the law, stealing and murdering their way through life.

First introduced in 1932 with Scarfacestarring Paul Muni and George Raft.

In the later thirties, the mob mov ies were tamer and focused on how crime never pays. A notable example is Angels with D irty Faces. They always lead to a tragic ending for the main mobster through a fatal mistake which the police using it to their advantage.

In the forties and fifties the genre died down and was replaced by film noir.

In the seventies, there was a revival of mob films, notably with The Godfatherby Mario Puzo. It was purposefully shot with hardlighting top give it a grim feel. What made it different was their portrayal as humans.

Most famous example are from the late 1970s 1990, including Scarface, Goodfellas, The Godfather, Carlitosway, Once Upon Atime In Americaand Casino. Many of these films are considered timeless classics, showing the popularity and critical acclaim of thegenre at one time.

The tradition mob film has died out, with the latest 2007 release The Departedshowing a less grim and realistic portrayal of the mob.

Gangster films are often categorized as film noiror mystery films, or they are related to detective films - because of underlyingsimilarities between these cinematic forms.

NARRATIVE STRUCTURE OF THE GANGSTER GENRE

    1. The hero is an immigrant who dislikes his low status in life and wants more.

    2. Unlike the Western, this story takes place in the big city. The wide open plains have been

traded in for the seedy alleyways and wharves of the urban jungle.

    3. The gangster can only gain power by taking it. It is survival of the fittest, and the only law

Is the law of the jungle.

    4. The only loyalty the gangster feels is for his own immigrant roots.

    5. Success is measured in material goods - flashy cars, expensive clothes, and mansions.

Women are measures of success as well.

    6. The hero's antagonist is society, and the enforcers of the law. The police, the FBI, the CIArepresent the enforcers of societal status quo.

    7. The end justifies the means.
