“Designing Product Speeds for the Circular Economy” is the fourth in a series of lectures for the textile industry delivered by Zero Waste Scotland. Environmental impacts from waste in the fashion and textile industry continue to grow at an ever more rapid pace. This pace has led to new design approaches to meet this need for speed and these cultivated fast fashion appetites. How does designing textiles for fast fashion differ from more traditional design approaches? How has the idea of ‘slow fashion’ evolved in recent years as a counter approach to fast fashion? How has design changed in order to deliberately slow down the lifespan of a product? Facilitator Rebecca Earley is Professor of Sustainable Textile Design and is Textile Futures Research Centre (TFRC) Director. Earley is a designer and researcher whose printed textiles have been widely published and exhibited over the last twenty years. She researches sustainable design strategy, curates exhibitions, creates materials, models and prototypes, and mentors other designers and researchers to explore TED’s vision of a more sustainable industry and culture. Becky works with organisations to embed sustainable design research within the corporate culture. Recent clients include H&M, VF Corporation, Puma, DAFI, Sustainable Fashion Academy and Zero Waste Scotland. Facilitator Kate Goldsworthy is Senior Research Fellow with Textiles Environment Design (TED). With over 15 years of experience as a textile designer, consultant and academic, her core interests are design for cyclability, new finishing and production technologies and material innovation. Her approach is practice based, always placing the ‘prototype’ at the centre of her research, and collaborative, often across disciplines in both industry and scientific fields.
