LETS TAKE IT BACK

Dj Zakes’s history started back in 1999 when he took interest in being a dj following in the footsteps of his uncle who was also a dj back in the days.

His father kick started his career by supplying him with his music LPs, his first interest as a Dj was purely to be famous but soon after he realised that this was his passion and that’s is when it all began.

He has shared dj boxes with the likes of Ready-d, Bionic, Blaze, Naked Dj, Dj Fresh, Dj Christos, Vinny Da Vinci, Kentphonik, Khabzela, Ganyani, Mbuso, Troye, Troydon, Sassy Sam, Iggy Smalls, Glen Lewis just to name a few. He has shared the stage with the best South African artists (Skwatta Kamp, Ntsiki Mazwai, HHp, Morafe, Amu, Mr Selwyn and even some international acts such as: Guru (USA), Jeff K (France), Danny Boy and Raw (NORWAY) M-PHAZES (AUSTRALIA)

ARCHIEVEMENTS

He won 2nd place of the vinyl experience DJ competition that was hosted by Dj Fresh on Y-fm.

Dj Zakes was one of the Top 5 Dj’s to be nominated for the Hype Magazine Awards in 2009

He was DJ of the month on the Y magazine (2001 August issue). This earned him a lot of respect on the streets and in the industry opening doors for him. He was one of the Dj’s that were chosen to attend a workshop hosted by Frankie Knuckles one of the pioneers of house music held at the Kippies Jazz club next to The Market Theatre.

In 2002 he managed to convince Dj Fresh to let him showcase his skills on his then drive time slot on Yfm, who offered him a 30 minute slot where he played a set of deep house tunes every Thursday. Later that year he was approached by The Camel Vinyl Experience to be one of the VIPs Dj’s that represented the brand as part of their marketing strategy.

EXPERIENCE

He was involved in a number of projects and functions like the Soweto festival (2007), Music Mayday Be-connected festival (2007), Street pop Sessions (2000-2009), the Hype magazine awards (2009) Back To The City (2010& 2011). Was invited on interviews with ShizNiz (E-TV); Go urban (Dstv), Castle Loud (Sabc1), Jozi fm, Y-fm.

In 2008 he helped coordinate an exchange Program between Holland and South Africa that addressed the 8 millennium goals through music and dance, his role was music and technical director. In 2009/10 he was responsible for co-coordinating Dj Vu's(Holland) tour to South Africa where he organized a number of gigs for him to showcase his skills.

Dj Zakes also mixed the Gutter Butter (2007) mixtape for Qba. When Damola heard the Gutter Butter Mixtape he invited him to also mix the Cocky Mixtape and also did a mixtape with Full skill called Koncept Karnival. In 2010 he mixed the Hype Magazine promotional Cd (Sept/Aug) Koncept Karnival.

He is currently the Toms ambassador for the M-Audio.
