When she began to encounter an over-abundance of worms in her soil, Zeke had the bright idea to harvest the worms for composting. “I didn’t want to throw the worms away, so I researched online things that I could with all these worms,” said Zeke. “I wanted to be responsible.” Shared the 7 th grader. “I wanted to help my mom and encourage people to reduce the amount of waste we bury in landfills. Using worms for composting made sense because my family and I have been working to reduce the amount of trash we produce at home.” Zeke’s investigation landed him at metrovancouver.org, an online resource for the residents of Vancouver, Canada that provides information for everything from regional governance and planning, to solid and water waste recycling and air quality control. “The website had lots of good information about composting and I was able to learn step- by-step how to set-up the system,” said Zeke. “It is really easy to maintain and every family could use the system. We all would benefit.” Zeke’s worm composting system is a mobile unit consisting of a 3-gallon bucket nestled inside a 5-gallon bucket. The inner bucket has small wholes in the sides and houses about 100 red wiggler worms, soil, green material, and brown material for composting. The outer bucket collects the waste produced by the worms. “It was a lot of fun to learn about composting and I like sharing with people. It is easy to make a difference without having to do too much.” Zeke said. For more information about securing Zeke’s worm composting system, contact Zeke at [email protected]. Established in 1989, SCA is celebrating 25 years of providing excellent academics in a Christian environment to the Kansas City metro area. SCA is an independent, nondenominational Christian school serving over 725 preschool through high school students. Located on a 36-acre campus, SCA holds dual accreditation through North Central Association and Association of Christian Schools International.
