The Zeenalini is an all

new, cool, and funny

mini- magazine by

kids. Are you

creative? Do you love

art, writing, and

cartooning? The

Zeenalini is where

your talents will

show! This zine is

open to all kids, ages 5

to 12, and we will

definitely publish your

work—from comics to

photos to creative

pieces, the zine is

where you need to be!

I personally think that

the zine is an

awesome thing

because it gives kids a

real opportunity to get

published and

recognized. Kids need

something fun and

inspiring to read. The

Beating Drum

supplements the

parents’ need for news

and events, whereas

the Zeenalini offers a

Hey, Zeenalini!

What happens at a

Zeenalini meeting?

That’s all. Thanks!

ASK ZEENALINI What’s a zine?Confused, Age 9

We brainstorm ideas,

fix schedules, type

text, layout and

design elements, set

files for publication,

and talk up Zeenalini.

You should come

check it out!

A zine is a

magazine. But it

is not like

something you

would find at a

store. It’s not

made by a big

publishing

company. It

goes by its own

rules!

Dear Zeenalini,Why are you called Zeenalini?R U pasta?!

Saucy,Age 12

The –alini ending is

“little” in Italian, like

our age and the size

of our zine. The zeen-

prefix is how the word

zine sounds when

read aloud.

My MomShe is named Nicole. She has

medium, brown hair with a tint

of gold in it. She’s got green

eyes. My mom my seem mean

when she disciplines us. It’s

because she loves us and is

trying to make us learn by our

mistakes. She plays with us,

she helps us, and she’s always

there for us like when we are

sad, afraid, lonely, or just need

her. She was there when my

brother got stitches when he

was five. Also she was there

when I was eleven and had to

get my appendix out. My mom

taught me how to cook and

helped me get better and better

at it. She also taught me to

loves Arabian horses and

Golden Retrievers. She really

likes animals. She is really

good at drawing; she likes to

draw horses. Her favorite color

is pink, and she likes a ton of

movies and a ton of books. My

mom likes to read a lot. She

likes to make us feel better.

Book Review: The Secret of Platform ThirteenHi, Kids! Do you like books with

magic and adventure? If you do, then

The Secret of Platform Thirteen by

Eva Ibbotson would be a great

suggestion. I thought it was so

exciting. I read it in two days!

First, it has lots of amazing parts. For

example, Odge Gribble, the hag, an

ogre, an old wizard, and a nymph go

to old London to rescue the prince. Do

you think they can get back in the

time of nine days? Find out when you

read the book!

Need another reason? Here it is. This

story has lots of magical creatures

like mistmakers. When mistmakers

hear music they start saying, “Ahhh…

ahhh,” and mist comes out of their

mouths.

I would recommend this book to

anyone because it is an exciting book.

THE ATM MACHINE One night, I went to a pizza place in Ludlow with Jeremy and my

dad. When we opened the door, it creaked. The place was warm inside.

My dad grabbed some house magazines from the rack. I saw lots of

pizza on peoples’ tables. But there weren’t many people there. On the

walls, there were old and new skis and

snowboards! We sat down at a red booth, and

we decided what kind of pizza we wanted. Then

we went to the counter and ordered our food.

While I was waiting, I looked at the big, video

games. I didn’t have any money, so I just

looked. The games were right next to the ATM

machine. I wondered it there was money in it.

There was a TWENTY dollar bill in the

machine!

I wanted to keep it but my dad said to ask

whose it was. I knew it was the right thing to do

but I still wanted to keep it! Then my dad went

with me to ask some people. We asked a

couple people, they all said, “No!”

“There was a TWENTY dollar bill in the

machine! I wanted to keep it but...”

20 dollars came out a

The teenager gave me

was happy to help him!

Then I said “thank you” to

Who Did It?

February 7th, 2121. The Wart Hogs and the Lightning

Bolts were facing each other in the Superbowl. With

two minutes until the end of the game, the Wart

Hogs were winning, 56 to 50. The Lightning Bolts

had to get a touchdown and a field

goal to win. Their coach gave them

the play, and they ran to the

field. “Set, HIKE!” The Quarterback

caught the football, and looked

around for someone to pass to.

Finally, #31 was open. The

quarterback threw the football to

him. He caught the football and

started to the touchdown zone.

While he was running, he looked

around to make sure nobody was near

him. He didn’t see anybody. But,

there was somebody. #26 from the

Wart Hogs was coming and he was

coming fast. A fan in the stands

got mad because he thought that #26

was going to tackle #31, so he

threw his gum onto the field. He didn’t think it

“The kicker ran and kicked the ball as hard as he

could...”

page 16

Page 21: Zeenalini Issue 1, 2010

would do anything. He thought wrong. #26 didn’t see

the gum, accidentally stepped on it, slipped, fell,

and broke his leg. But, that did make it so that

the Lightning Bolts got the touchdown. So it was a

happy and sad moment at the same time. It was a

tie, 56 to 56. “Five seconds left in the game,”

their coach said. “We have to get the field goal to

win.” They set up on the field. “This is it, Boys,”

one of the defensive linemen said, “It’s now or

never.” “Ready?” said the place kicker. “Ready,”

said the kicker. “Set, HIKE!” He caught the ball,

the clock started ticking, and crowd counted with

the clock. “5, 4, 3...” The kicker ran and kicked

the ball as hard as he could. YES! Field goal!

Wait. Back it up. What

happened? Another player on

the Wart Hogs (#18) slipped

on the same gum as #26. If he

hadn’t slipped on the gum, he

would have gotten in front of

the football and blocked the

shot. The Lightning Bolts

wouldn’t have gotten the

field goal. Now, everybody is

wondering, whose gum was it?

Once upon a time there was an Island right under the P in

the Pacific Ocean. On that Island there was an old story

about the Empress who ruled there long ago. She loved eggs.

She had 121 eggs. Her favorite egg was her Golden Egg.

One day when she decided to count her eggs, she found that

she only had 120 eggs. So she had a meeting. In the

meeting, they decided that she would ride a horse to find

the Golden Egg.

As she was searching, she thought to herself: I can’t see

the golden egg from down here. So

she hopped on an eagle. She

couldn’t see the Golden Egg from

there, so she hopped on a griffin.

She could see really well from up

there.

Then she came upon an old forest

and she heard an elf town. They were

singing something that sounded like

this, “We are so brave. We stole

the Golden Egg from the Empress.”

She got off the Griffin and

sneaked to the elf town. She watched

them until they all went to sleep.

Then she went into the elf town.

After a few stumbles and awakening a

few Elves, she found it—the Golden

Egg.

She got back on the Griffin, then the eagle, then the horse,

and made it back to the palace.

She threw a party to rejoice. At the party, they thought of

a way to keep her eggs safer. They would put her eggs in a

wooden trunk and hide them in a hidden closet in the palace!

The End.
