Home Bakery is the brainchild of local Emirati, HindAl Mulla. The concept originated as a modest bakingbusiness from her kitchen table, and quickly grewwith overflowing orders from a loyal establishedcustomer base and a barrage of new enquiries in theform of fanatic social media followers. Hind soonrealised her ambition to turn her hobby into abusiness and approached Blacksheep to create itsbrand identity. Home Bakerys modest and authenticapproach offers a home for traditional delights andfamiliar treats, in contrast with Dubais typicalmodern aesthetic. Blacksheep created a brand DNAbased on the core value Simple Indulgence. From

this a visual identity was created, using threedifferent design elements all derived from theemotionally evocative and sensory pleasureexperienced when we eat sweet foods. The interiordesign reflects the origins and values of the brand, incorporating a house-like structure within theinternal framework of the restaurant, which curvesinwards to act as bench seating and creates anatmosphere of homeliness and comfort. Honesty inthe earthiness of the materials and furnishingsincluding rustic oak timber, thick padded fabric, andworn leather allows the simple deliciousness of theproducts to speak for themselves.

    Drygate Brewing Co.

EXPERIMENT ANDEXPERIENCEDrygate Brewing Co., the experiential craftbrewery, has opened in Glasgows East End,with a refined industrial aesthetic developed bydesign studio Graven Images. Housed in a two-storey warehouse built in the 1960s, the brewerycomprises a restaurant, bar, roof terrace,events/gallery space, and Studio Kit area. Thevisual identity was created by D8, who workedwith graduates from Glasgow School of Art toproduce artwork.Starting with a blank stripped space, materialsfocused on interplay between inheritedfragments of the buildings previous lives andrefined use of an industrial but warm palette. Astaircase made of concrete, which wasuncovered during renovation became a centralexposed feature of the scheme, and a beautifullypreserved tiled faade welcomes customers atthe entrance.Throughout the interior Graven paired hardsurfaces against warmth: mild steel, castconcrete, solid wood, and polished patinatedcopper in the bar; hardwood herringboneflooring butts up against a steel angle-framescreen dividing the bar from the workingbrewery; and surfaces of vibrantly coloured resinand paint play off against metal mesh andblackened steel. The image of the seven peaks of the buildingsroof runs through all the bespoke furniture andmateriality as a detail theme always integral, not applied. Details were cleverly improvised as the worksprogressed the bar, for instance, is clad intimber shuttering which was originally used toform the precise concrete panels cladding theground floors restaurant bar.

Kelly designed the apartmentwith this at the forefront of her ideas, as well asincorporating her signature style of luxuriouslyneutral, sumptuous textures and plenty oflayering. One of the first decisions made was tolink all the different spaces by two metalribbons running from the entrance stairs, up tothe mezzanine and spreading along thecorridors. Once these striking black runnerswere extended along the common areas, all thedifferent rooms and identities, which werelinked together could then be adapted. Theliving room is composed of three seating areas, which are set around a central dining table. Each area has a different function and benefitsfrom different light during certain times of theday. The sensation of space is emphasised by aseries of four chandeliers floating like adynamic sculpture in the central space. A newbespoke sculptural metal stair was alsoinserted and all spaces were refurbishedthroughout with custom joinery and finishes.

    BIID Update

The profile of the interiordesigner is now greater thanit has ever been, as those whoattended my talk, Why theinterior designer has becomeessential, at Decorex

International 2014 will already be aware. At Decorex, I proposed the idea that, increasingly, the role of the individual interior designer is provingparamount. In particular, I argued that whilst designflair is itself a significant asset to the designer, morerecently, education and experience have proven themost effective tools for the transition into successfulpractice and establishing a reliable reputation as adesigner. In fact, much of the work of the BritishInstitute of Interior Design (BIID) focuses onfacilitating its members with such tools as these todevelop within the industry. Through such initiativesas on-going CPD sessions and the launch of ourProfessional Pathway, the Institute is consistentlyencouraging and enabling best practice. As part of its dedication to its community, the BIIDsupplies beneficial resources such as the latest

updated Concise Agreement for Interior DesignServices (CID/14), launched this month. Designed tobe comprehensive and comprehensible, CID/14 is asimplified version of the industry standard form ofappointment. The contract is developed bydesigners, for designers to ensure its user-friendliness and effectiveness. With all of thesemeasures in place and being enacted on a regularbasis, it is little wonder that the profession of theinterior designer is becoming ever more recognisedand respected. The profession also has been in the media spotlightrecently, with television shows such as BBC2s TheGreat Interior Design Challenge, on which I amfortunate enough to be a judge, playing an importantpart in stimulating broader public interest in theindustry. The show has undoubtedly been a hit, attracting feature coverage for interior design innational and regional newspapers. With the secondseries about to begin, The Great Interior DesignChallenge showcases the best that amateur interiordesign has to offer, whilst serving as a potentialspringboard for talented amateurs.

Many professions have Institutes; they are thehallmark of a profession. Belonging to the Institutedemonstrates to our clients that they are dealingwith a professional who is properly insured, and hasmet the rigorous standards demanded by BIIDmembership. It creates an immediate platform oftrust between the two parties. It also follows that thestronger we are as an Institute, then the strongerand healthier we will all be both as independentbusinesses, and as a profession. The more powerfulour collective voice then the more we can help defineand shape interior design in the future.I believe the profile of the interior designer is at anall-time high. Our profession is more visible andvaluable than ever before, in both the media andpublic eye. Meanwhile, the industry grows fromstrength to strength. Our members are consistentlyembracing BIID guidance on best practice anddevelopment opportunities to provide a professionalservice that combines competence and creativity, ensuring the reputation of the interior designer asan indispensable individual.www.biid.org.uk

    Anouska Hempel

depths of Anouskas illustrious career. Here, I recall the interview I recentlyexperienced with Anouska. Her passion fordesign is clear - her quick wit and charmundeniable.

WHAT IS YOUR EARLIEST MEMORY OFSOMETHING YOU DESIGNED?When I was five I put an egg in small cup with ateaspoon positioned through the handle. This wasthe beginning. I have always re-arranged itemsand moved things around to play with theircomposition and order. I like it; it creates changeand interest and establishes a differentconnection with the item and the room. I can be influenced by things that I do like just aswell as those that I dont. I think this is important,to appreciate the good and bad, the pretty and theugly. It helps to define what you love as somethingparticularly special and to force you as a creativethinker to create something wonderful out ofsomething dull.

WHICH DESIGN SCHOOL DID YOU TRAIN AT (IF AT ALL)?I never had any training in any of the disciplines, which I practice now. It just wasnt the way then. Ipractice what I preach now and all of my designideas were founded in the fantasy world in mymind. In many ways I feel as those I live in astrange fantasy world that has become my reality, what a joy that is!

HOW HAVE DESIGN SCHOOLS EVOLVED IN YOUR EYES?Everything is computerised. For me, designschools are neither here nor there. Its a poignantreality but I do feel that some art schools havelost their magic and that is something that shouldalways remain in design magic. The designschool world has become a big machine; it is toocommercial, too available and not free enough toexplore what art and design and style and beautyreally is through the eyes of unique designers.Who knows that their potential may be whentheyre sat behind a computer screen for the

entirety of their education? I fear that square eyesand square shoulders is the future for some.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST PROFESSIONAL DESIGN COMMISSION?I honestly cannot remember. Ive been designinghouses and hotels, sorting peoples lives out forso long that it all feels as though it was at once. Iam connected to the clients I work with and theirneeds and wants remain fresh in my mind. I guess one of the first commissions I worked on,to give an answer to the question, was my own. Iwas the client. It was Blakes Hotel. I think itsalways a good idea to design for yourself. Youhave the world at your fingertips. You set thebrief, you demand changes from yourself, youdemand better, and your mind is constantlyevolving with the design. With Blakes in particular, I felt as though theworld was at my fingertips. There was nonsenseand happiness within the project, which I love Im always seeking for some nonsense inamongst the beauty of the design. I was equally

  • Interior Design Today November 201446

    Designer Profile

very strict with myself. As the client youabsolutely want the best and I believe I deliveredthat for myself in Blakes Hotel.

WHO ARE YOUR DESIGN INSPIRATIONS?I take inspiration from everything but to name buta few, John Sargent, Sir John Soane, Tadao Ando, the Japanese self-taught architect. I really do hoparound from place to place in life and so when itcomes to my inspirations, the same thing occurs. One thing to note about our practice is that we arearchitects, first and foremost. Get the architectureright and you can go on to be as capricious andsilly as you wish after that; architecture first, design and frivolity second. I believe that thosegreat inspirers are those who successfullycombined this.

HAVE YOU EVER DABBLED IN OTHER FORMS OF DESIGN?I owned and ran a couture company for a verylong time. We created beautiful clothes andtailoring at Anouska Hempel Couture. If you candesign a four-poster bed, you can design aperson. Everything is linked in design.Garden and landscape design is another area ofconsideration. My design amusement comesfrom everywhere and the garden is an extensionof how you live and how you see the home you live

in. It is just as vital as inside, so to design aninterior is to nurture and cultivate an exterior.

WHERE IS THE MAJORITY OF YOUR WORK BASED? Anywhere. Singapore, Chile, USA, Germany, thelist goes on. I have a fantastic team who I couldntdo all of this without. We have all grown as acompany and it is down to everyones dedicationthat we can work as far afield as we do. It is apleasure and an honour to work for our globalclients.

HAVE YOU EVER WORKED OR LIVED ANYWHEREELSE? IF SO, HOW HAS THIS HELPED TO SHAPEAND INFLUENCE YOUR IDEAS ON DESIGN?I live on a boat! The Beluga, my beautiful blackand tan Turkish Gulet. It is from here that I basemyself, so really Ive lived everywhere there is anocean. Ive travelled to Istanbul to work on apalace there. We charter all over.

DO YOU TAKE DESIGN INSPIRATION FROM THE SEA?No the seas looks like the sea. It stabilises me -the sea and the boat together. There is also asense of danger on the water, which exhilaratesyou and makes you focus.

HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE YOUR DESIGN STYLE?I am theatrical and elegant, with a firm overviewof strictness in every project that comes withbeing an architect. I like to mix this in and stir itup with the fashion world. The trick is never tochange the personality of the client your workingwith but to heighten their very best attributesthrough beautiful design.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST DESIGNCOMMISSION TO DATE?Fifty hectares in Bahia, Brazil. I felt like aPharaoh I delved so deep into the earth for thatproject. We really worked into the bowels of theearth, which is a whole other experience. Theproject actually closed for a time but we hope tobring it back to life in 2015 to continue our work.

IF YOU HADNT BECOME AN INTERIORDESIGNER WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING?I feel I may have been a brain surgeon orsomething of that ilk. I like digging around andinto inside the heads of my clients. My wholeoutlook is to make someone feel good, to improvetheir life, the way they live and the way they think. At the very end of it all, we do it to make peoplehappy. Thats what design is. www.anouskahempeldesign.com

EXQUISITE HANDMADE RUGSLeon Norell is an importer of beautiful oriental carpets. Of special interest are his hard-to-find colours, much in demand by interior designers for todays interiors, and his exquisite, surprisingly inexpensive silksfrom India. Leon Norells father, the late Henry Norell, came to England in 1925, to become a prominentbroker among the community of carpet merchants trading at the famous Port of London Authority bondedwarehouses in the City. This was the carpet centre of the West to which foreign buyers would throng. It wasfrom there that in the 1940s Henry Norell had supplied Harrods, Liberty, John Lewis, Selfridges, Gamages,Army & Navy and other West End department stores. It was at this centre that in the 1960s Leon Norellcame to be famed for providing the public with the facility to choose from the millions of pounds worth ofcarpets stored there. Today, aside from the choice of traditional Oriental carpets, Leon produces carpetsfor any design brief, delivered in under three months, as he did for the Presidents suit in 24: Live AnotherDay. Edwardian Group London

EAST MEETS WEST ENDTHE EDWARDIAN GROUP AND NEW YORK/TORONTO BASED YABU PUSHELBERG

FUSE TOGETHER TO CREATE AN EAST COAST MEETS WEST END DESIGN TRIUMPH

EDWARDIAN GROUP LONDON RECENTLYANNOUNCED THE APPOINTMENT OF AWARD-WINNING INTERNATIONAL DESIGN FIRM YABUPUSHELBERG FOR ITS NEW HOTELDEVELOPMENT IN LONDON'S LEICESTERSQUARE. NEW YORK AND TORONTO BASED YABUPUSHELBERG WILL WORK WITH THEHOSPITALITY GROUP TO DEVELOP A UNIQUELUXURY LIFESTYLE CONCEPT FOR THERECENTLY CONSENTED SCHEME IN THE HEARTOF LONDONS WEST END.INTERIOR DESIGN TODAY SPEAKS TO ROB STEULAT THE EDWARDIAN GROUP AND GLENNPUSHELBERG AND GEORGE YABU AT YABUPUSHELBERG TO GET THE INSIDE TAKE ON THISMASTERFUL COLLABORATION.

    ROB STEUL, EDWARDIAN GROUP LONDON

How and why did you choose to work with Yabu Pushelberg?RS: I have worked with them on other projectsincluding 10 Trinity Square in London. YabuPushelberg are much more than interiordesigners. They have a great understanding ofbrand and guest experience from conceptionthrough to creation. I think also that they see thetotality of design, from the external through thesmallest detail of the interior. It is this rigour andattention to detail, which will set our hotel in the

right path to respond to our customers andappeal to a global audience.

What do Edwardian hotels represent as a hotel group?RS: As a family owned business we are extremelyproud of our fine portfolio of hotels but never giveup moving them forward and raising ourstandards of service, customer experience anddesign. In fact design, innovation and the arts forthat matter, are a pillar of what we are and whatour brand represents. The new hotel at LeicesterSquare raises our game significantly we knowhow important this site is not only to ourselvesbut also to London as a city; and we have notshrunk from this responsibility.

What were the main strands of your brief to the designers?RS: Yabu Pushelberg have been involved in theentire creation project surrounding the new hotel.Together with them we are creating not only ahotel, but a destination composed of restaurants, bars, pool club and spa, meeting and functionspaces etc. The idea is that this property willbecome a social gathering space in the heart ofthe West End and attract guests from out of townas well as plenty of local Londoners looking for agreat fun and relaxed place to call home in theheart of theatreland, China Town and Soho.

How do you envision this luxury lifestyle concept being achieved?RS: The key with the new Leicester Square hotelis that it will be a place to have fun and relax; itsall about comfort and space, not indulgentopulence. The hotel will feel more like a club forour guests with the bedrooms taking on the feelof a West End pied a terre. The inspiration forthe hotel came from the theatrical and cinematicculture of Leicester Square: reflecting the ideathat the guest is the actor in their own play, thehotel is their stage and London is the dynamicbackground to each of their stories. Of course, the new hotel will cater for every need whilst atthe same time remaining accessible to people inan open and inviting way.

What is next for the Edwardian Group?RS: Edwardian Group London will continue toraise the bar in our existing portfolio of hotels, inparticular we are in the midst of an excitingprogramme to transform our public areas andrestaurant and bar offerings. Excitingly, werecently launched the May Fair Kitchen, a newrestaurant concept prototyped in The May FairHotel. The May Fair Kitchen is an elegant, yetmodern and relaxed place to dine, offering thefinest quality food in a high quality environment inthe heart of Mayfair. We are now looking at moreplans for development of F&B spaces across our

London properties as well as creating outdoorterraces and upgraded bars and restaurants inour Guildford and Manchester properties.

GLENN PUSHELBERG AND GEORGE YABU, YABU PUSHELBERG

When you first read the brief for the designproject, what were your initial thoughts, how didyou envision the hotel?GP: One of the most interesting things about thisproject for us was that the conceptual programwas not yet formed. We were brought in not onlyto design the hotel, but help figure out the pointof difference for this new lifestyle hotel brand. Itsreally exciting to be part of the invention ofsomething.GY: Our first instinct was to understand thehistorical context and the sense of place intrinsicto the Hotels location. Not necessarily as point ofreference in our design concept, but to have asense of the contextual background, was to usimportant, in order to approach invention orreinvention in a city like London that has so muchhistory.

Have you ever worked for a hotel group like theEdwardian Group?GP: The uniqueness of the Edwardian Group liesin that it is a family run business. Its a smallenough organisation that we are reacting directlywith the founders and owners, which makes therapport that much more robust and gratifying.GY: Its an enjoyable, lovely relationship.

What were your first design considerations forthis project?GP: In most hotels, public spaces are layeredhorizontally at the base of the hotel, whereas inthis case, the public spaces are vertically stackedthrough the centre of the hotel presenting reallyinteresting opportunities for vertical circulation.GY: Part of the brief we were presented with wasto animate the street while being mindful of thecommunity rules in Leicester Square. Wereexcited about the potential to create a foodprogram at street level that will become a socialgathering place, perhaps with food carts andtrucks parked in loading docksspaces that aretypically un-designed and hidden away.

How will you maintain the Edwardian Groupbrand in the design?GP: With this project the Edwardian Group isessentially embarking on a different phase ofgrowth for the company through the creation ofan entirely new lifestyle brand. We are lookingforward to being part of that creation through thishotel. Its going to be a standout.

What is Yabu Pushelbergs ambition with thisproject?GP: When we achieve what we are setting out to,this project will allow our firm to showcase ourwork in London, and to the world at large. We are most well known as an interiors firm, butwe are also designing products, and acting as

producers for our clients hotel projects;managing or directing other consultants, such asbranding, art consultants, lighting designers, landscape designers, etc, and assisting clientswith a more comprehensive vision.

What is next for Yabu Pushelberg after thisproject?GY: This project will undoubtedly be years indevelopment, as is the case with any large scale

hotel project, but in the nearer future, we areexcited about the launch of the Park Hyatt NewYork this fall, and a number of super high endresidential developments in Shanghai and HongKong launching in the new year.GP: We are looking forward to being producersof more and more projects, and to collaborationslike this one that offer the chance to createsomething with our clients from scratch.

  • BLANCA SANCHEZHalo Design Interiors In the kitchen I think thata hot tap is a must-haveappliance. Gone are thedays of waiting for thekettle to boil, now that wecan have near boiling hotwater on tap for cups oftea and cooking. Doingaway with a kettle meansthat the kitchen can havea more streamlined looktoo. Another appliance, which has had an impacton kitchen design is thedown-draught extractor.Built into the worktopbehind the hob, it appearsat the touch of a buttonwhen required, butdisappears when not inuse.
