Home Automation is used to describe residential technologies that go beyond traditional, analog residential products. Traditional residential technologies were typically mechanical, standalone products with limited functionalities beyond their own operation and control.

What is Z-Wave Home Automation?

Home Automation replaces these basic, standalone products with electronic, communicating, and controllable products that add new capabilities to the installation. Compared to traditional analog mechanical designs, these electronic products offer both enhanced individual standalone functions and new communications capabilities. These new device qualities are afforded by the Z-Wave RF networking technologies used by a certified Z-Wave product to monitor, receive, and send information throughout the residence.

Home Automation uses this communication network for unified command, control, and scheduling functions in the home. Z-Wave products perform these Home Automation functions wirelessly using RF mesh based radio communications.

Remote access to individual and groups of Z-Wave enabled devices is a popular, compelling benefit of an enhanced security service. Remote access can enable a homeowner to turn on his/her lights and adjust the thermostat before arriving home. No advanced scheduling required.

With Z-Wave enabled door locks, security systems can permit home owners to have secure, electronic, wireless access control capabilities for their home. These remote access control features can permit the homeowner to lock, unlock, and be instantly notified of authorized entries by individual family members.

Until recently if you said Home Automation many people thought of expensive, complex systems for luxury homes or complicated whole-house rewiring projects. Automation was largely confined to specially trained installers and only the most high end, expensive homes. But now it doesn’t require a big investment to enjoy the comfort and ease of Home Automation and control. Z-Wave technologies enable security systems to unify, manage and control a new ecosystem of wireless products in any home.

Keypad Entry Zone/Scene Control Climate Control

Z-Wave technology is found in a radio microchip and provides a communication protocol that

is transmitted over radio waves. The RF chip contains a tiny bi-directional radio that handles the

command and control signals that are communicated throughout a home automation network.

The Z-Wave chip also contains memory capabilities that hold protocol and application information,

system interface, and in the case of some advanced lighting controls, a triac control for dimming.

Introducing Z-Wave Mesh Networks

Z-Wave products utilize mesh networking to create cost effective, scalable, modular and robust

wireless installations without a central RF hub. Z-Wave devices use common protocol that enables

each RF device in the system to talk to any other RF capable device. Z-Wave products leverage

this RF communication by using a type of RF network typography called a mesh network. A mesh

RF network is a “peer to peer” technique to route information and instructions between devices

without the need for a central RF hub to act as a “gate keeper” device to manage the network.

In a Z-Wave mesh network, each device is a smart device capable of handling and routing the control

commands entered by a user. Mesh networking distributes signals efficiently by hopping them

from one device to another, finding the best route through the mesh to get to the final destination.

Z-Wave’s smart hopping of connections provides for efficient alternate paths around physical or

invisible interference that can block or impair traditional RF communications.
