November-December 2018

Hi Everyone,

We have had some very busy members for November and December

The Essentials 4 Women team of volunteers have been collecting and packing pre-used handbags for women living rough for Christmas. Carol has led this team and collected from all of her community links, notably her Vietnamese women friends who have donated goods and cash to support this project.

Joan and Jenny have made more baby baths for newborns and their mums and delivered to the Migrant Women's Resource Centre and the Welcome Centre.

Liz has arranged for breast cushions to be made and delivered to the Burnside Breast Centre. Liz has also been checking out venues for us to do a public breast cushions workshop in either February or early March. Rachel and Jacqui have organised our Amelia Earhardt day for January 19th. Cathy organised a wonderful shopping opportunity at Wohler’s with afternoon tea which we also used as a fundraiser. We will have other shopping opportunities at Wohlers on both the Thursday and Friday before Mother’s day in May.

Please consider coming to the combined District Conference in Brisbane next year. Details are given in the image below on page 12, it should be a great event!

Wishing you all a very Happy Christmas and a wonderful New Year!

Baby Bundles This month, thanks to the money we received at the recent ACSO Awards, Jenny H. and I were able to put together some more Baby Bundles for delivery to the Migrant Women's Resource Centre and the Welcome Centre. We shop for items we need to purchase when prices are reduced whenever we can so that our money will stretch as far as possible.

Our stock of hand-made items and new goods donated by our members and E4WSA for inclusion in the baskets is now very much depleted; any future donations would be very welcome. Examples of such items are pram/cot rugs, muslin wraps, new-born clothing, bonnets, baby wipes, bibs and teddy-bears.

There is an increasing demand for our Baby Bundles. Shirley mentioned at the last meeting that a request from the Western Adelaide Domestic Violence Service has been received. Our members will need to consider if they wish to expand the current programme before we can agree to this request, as our ACSO funding cannot be used to include a new client.

Joan Möller.

PS: Milenka Vasekova, Manager of the Migrants Women's Support Service (part of the Women's Safety Service) was thrilled to receive our Zonta Club of Adelaide Torrens Baby Basket. She wanted to pass on a big thanks to Zonta and its volunteers. The basket was no sooner delivered to the office than Milenka sent me this photo of one of their clients whose baby is due soon. Thanks especially to Jenny Hatchard and Joan Moller for creating such a beautiful and important gift to women in great need. Caption Jenny Weaver

Breast Cushion Project Thanks again to Prue for allowing us to take over her lovely home on a Friday 30 November for the final BC workshop for 2018 and for packing all those cushions. We enjoyed a delicious supper as usual. Thanks too to Joan, Shirley, Jenny W, and me (I guess) putting our heads down to sew 37 cushions for the night! Thanks too to Cathy and Morag for their help by collecting, stuffing and delivering the forms to me in very timely fashion. We liked Cathy’s own blue ribbon (roses); they were easy to sew on and very complementary to the blue cushion. Clever Cathy!

The Blue Period of cushions will soon be over as Hilton Hemz is nearly out of that material. I will soon be delivering a big box of purple material to HH when I drop off a BIG THANK YOU box of Haighs Chocolates for Christmas. HH will be having a well-deserved break from cushions in December and January and we probably won’t receive our next batch of their sewing until late January, early February. Expect a workshop in early February, as stocks at the Burnside Hospital are likely to be depleted; but I’m assured that they will manage over the break with their stock on hand plus our 37 from the workshop.

Below is a Chart showing the breast cushion output for 2018 calendar year. We produced 253 this year, compared to 178 in the previous year (see other chart). Clearly, Burnside Hospital conducted more operations this year, which is sad, but Jane, the breast care nurse, told me that patients continue to appreciate the quality and comfort of our cushions and our supply was good.

AFFLIP-sponsored visit of Filipino educators During October ten Filipino educators were given the opportunity to travel to Adelaide and meet with people from their partner schools. Now all fifteen schools in the Talomo District in Davao City, supported by AFFLIP, have had representatives come to Adelaide and learn about the South Australian ways of educating students in Primary Schools. Staff and children in the partner schools also learned about the Filipino way of life and school activities.

Several workshops related to literacy and numeracy were presented by AFFLIP members who are educators. There were also opportunities for people to visit their partner schools and to do co-planning of a new topic. Teachers and students will then communicate about their projects using skype and snail mail. Topics cover such areas as colonisation of our countries and environmentalism.

As the visitors stay with AFFLIP members there are great opportunities to find out about each other’s families and daily lives. One of the major topics is food and its place in our lives, what and when we eat various foods and the methods of preparation. A great benefit for hosts is having meals prepared and presented by guests.

The Filipino community of South Australia are strong Sponsors of AFFLIP. They take the visitors on trips to the Central market and other places of interest as well as host an evening at the president’s home. This is always a very happy occasion, with lots of food, singing and dancing.

One of the highlights was a visit to Urimbirra Sanctuary at Victor Harbor where the visitors enjoyed seeing our wild animals. Many, many photographs were taken!! This year we visited the home of one of the AFFLIP members, at Meadows, where we had a barbeque. The garden contained a large number of rose bushes which fascinated the Filipinos. They spent a long time walking among the bushes and then cutting blooms to take back to their hosts. Again, many photos were taken.

I thought these photographs of some of the projects supported by AFFLIP may be of interest to you:

SERVICE PROJECT

Community Aid for Women and Girls, Saint Andrews by the Sea November 2019

Community Aid at St Andrews by the Sea Uniting Church, 92 Jetty Road Glenelg has a long history of helping those in the community who are finding life tough.

We have learned only this week that our application to renew our funding through the Federal Government for a further 4 years has been unsuccessful, now we have no Government funding.

We previously receive a little funding from the Federal Government which enabled us to distribute a small Coles Card to eligible clients (approx. $20, 4 times a year). This funding did not cover the number of clients that we see on an annual basis which means that any cash donations that we receive throughout the year are needed to be spent on the purchase of more Coles Cards.

We are indebted to local groups who support us in enabling us to offer basic items to our clients. We have worked very hard over the last couple of years to forge great relationships with like-minded service groups. Zonta, in particular, have been our only source and made it possible for us to offer new bras or new knickers to our female clients (sadly, these women often, either only have 1 set of underclothes or they go without) this together with Zonta’s collaboration with Essentials for Women SA also the supply of many toiletries and hygiene items for women.

We are constantly looking at ways to improve the general self-worth of our clientele and to improve their dignity.

Donations, such as the above mentioned, are very important to us and will become increasingly important as we did not receive our funding for the next 4-years.

For your information I have provided the following statistics:

Fin Yr 17/18 1 July 18 – 31 Oct 18 (4 month period)

No. of times clients assisted 2592 944

No. of times Females assisted 1090 369

Females reporting as having No address (i.e. NFA)

37 25 (est. approx 102% increase on last year)

Lisa McGrath Coordinator Emergency Relief St Andrews by the Sea Uniting Church 92 Jetty Road, Glenelg

Over the next few months they will be looking for other avenues of funding (e.g. State Govt and local Council grants, Service Clubs, Businesses, etc). In the meantime they are appealing to everyone associated with St Andrews Church and UnitingCare Glenelg to support them when and where they can. Our donations, particularly of underwear, are certainly greatly appreciated!

Another busy workshop today, completing the E4WSA Christmas Handbag Appeal ... with a total tally of 193 glorious handbags, to be given as gifts for women who are experiencing great hardship through homelessness and/or domestic violence. Thank you all those who have donated, also to our ZCAT Members (Carol, Tina, Shirley, Christine, Jacqui, Helen, Marnie, Cathy, Prue, Jenny, Rachel) & our friendly volunteers (Cherry, Lee, Jodie, Bev) ... who braved the hot & steamy room to make such a wonderful contribution towards helping our SA community. A small gift to brighten up this Christmas

The Advocacy Committee will report later on the impact of our daily Facebook posts to address this horrendous issue. Here’s a weekly update from Facebook showing that 2000 people saw our posts and 1400 interacted with the posts (“like” or share). In particular, the post that reported on the woman who was executed for killing a man while he was raping her, was shared 71 times, greatly broadening the audience for this advocacy project.

City Of Joy

At the meeting in November I said I had seen a brilliant documentary on a place called "City of Joy" on Netflix. I tried to find out if there was a DVD released but alas there is not one. For those people who are interested in the work of Christina Schuler and Dr Denis Mukwege in Bakavu DRC there are many links on Google and YouTube .

My interest as I am sure yours will be too is because we support the brilliant work of Dr Luc. However I thoroughly recommend this documentary because it gives one a great visual picture of the lives of women in the DRC.

Hope you enjoy the article about it in the Guardian, just click on the link and go to the full article;
