EDITORIAL:
Kia Ora,
Welcome to the first issue of Te Reo for 2004 we hope you all had an enjoyable Christmas and you were able to gather all those missing details for the family tree from the family members who visited over the holiday period.
In this issue of the newsletter you will find the draft agenda and both the nomination and proxy voting forms for the upcoming MIG AGM on Saturday 5th June 2004 between 8:00 and 8:50 am at the Angus Hotel, Hast-ings during the NZSG Conference. Please ensure that the completed forms are returned to Vivian to arrive no later than Monday 24th May 2004. Please also consider standing for a position on the MIG executive committee, fresh ideas and new enthusiasm is always welcome.
The MIG website at www.rcyachts.net/maori has been given a facelift, hopefully it will be easier to navigate and appear less cluttered. Also, in response to your requests back issues of Te Reo can now be accessed online. You can get to the MIG website via the NZSG website but you will probably be more successful if you use the direct
URL at the beginning of this paragraph. If you experi-ence difficulty viewing some of the pages please refresh your browsers temporary stored internet files.
I am presently awaiting further advice from Bruce RAL-STON of Te Papa Whakahiku (Auckland War Memorial Museum) seeking copyright permission to reproduce the “Taonui Manuscript” which was mentioned in Te Reo Akuhata. Progress is a little slow but hopefully there will be something positive to report in the next issue.
In this issue you will also find a reproduction of the Maori section of the NZSG library catalogue for the benefit of our members without access to the internet or the NZSG library catalogue CD. It was originally my intention to print the catalogue as part of a series, but this would involve several issues of the newsletter and as the NZSG library is constantly being added to then by the time the series had been completed in the newsletter it would be somewhat out of date. Therefore the entire Index will appear in this issue, making it as up-to-date as possible at this time. There are borrowing instructions on page eight with a borrowing request form also included in the centre of this edition. Meanwhile, details of the recent MIG book purchases will be included in the May maga-zine.
We have pleasure in welcoming several new members this issue including Aileen McKAY and Olive MARTIN from Victoria – all our Australian members are welcome to request hardcopies of Te Reo directly from myself while all New Zealand members should continue to receive their newsletters through the MIG Secretary.

We are still seeking expressions of interest from amongst current and past members in gathering to celebrate the groups 10th Birthday. Please contact the Secretary if you are interested so we can gauge the level of interest to proceed with arrangements.
Finally the committee offer best wishes to all our mem-bers for a prosperous New Year and I would also like to take this opportunity to extend special thanks to Peter ALLAN who has once again come to my rescue with further information for the newsletter—thank you Peter.
Hari tau hou Hei Kōnei ra Bruce MATHERS.

NZSG LIBRARY CATALOGUE
I have extracted all current references to “Maori” in the online NZSG Library Catalogue which has been included in the following pages for the benefit of our members without access to the Internet or the NZSG CD—while every effort has been made to accurately reproduce the library catalogue, members should verify all records with the NZSG office prior to placing a borrow request. It should also be noted that the NZSG Library Catalogue is constantly being updated with NEW ACCESSIONS and more records would have been added to the catalogue since this list was originally compiled.
To extract the records to use in the newsletter here, only the one Keyword “MAORI” was used. Therefore mem-bers should also bear in mind that other Keywords and phrases can also produce further possible hits.
For example: “Whakapapa; Ngati; Iwi; Whanau; Tribes; Hapu; Marae; Maori History and Native Schools” just to name a few variants, all produced search results as well. For those members online, the NZSG Library Catalogue can be accessed through the NZSG website : http://www.genealogy.org.nz/
BORROWING FROM THE NZSG LIBRARY
All NZSG members resident in NZ can borrow items from the library, with the exception of "for reference only" items. They need only let us know (by whatever means, including phone and fax) exactly what it is that they wish to borrow and we will mail it to them.
Example:
[N.B. THIS NUMBER IS A MIG NEWSLETTER REFERENCE NUMBER ONLY—Please do NOT quote this particular number when placing a borrow request with the NZSG library] BM
The Item is issued for a period of 2 weeks but if it is a few days late back, we don't worry, as it is usually due to the postal system.
They may borrow any two items at a time. An item = One barcode. This can be one book, or 10 years of BDM fiche. When the item is being returned, the borrower needs to send stamps to the equivalent of what it cost to send the item. (They will have received an issue slip with the amount written on it as well as when the item is due back). CF
