AlthoughLateef'smaininstrumentswerethetenorsaxophoneandflute,healsoplayedoboeandbassoon,bothrareinjazz,andalsousedanumberofnonwesterninstrumentssuchasthebambooflute,shanai,shofar,xun,arghulandkoto.Heisknownforhavingbeenaninnovatorintheblendingofjazzwith"Eastern"music.[1]PeterKeepnews,inhisNewYorkTimesobituaryofLateef,wrotethatthemusician"playedworldmusicbeforeworldmusichadaname."[2]

Earlylifeandcareer

LateefwasborninChattanooga,Tennessee.Hisfamilymoved,in1923,toLorain,Ohio,andagainin1925,toDetroit,Michigan,wherehisfatherchangedthefamily'snameto"Evans".[4]

ThroughouthisearlylifeLateefcameintocontactwithmanyDetroitbasedjazzmusicianswhowentontogainprominence,includingvibraphonistMiltJackson,bassistPaulChambers,drummerElvinJonesandguitaristKennyBurrell.Lateefwasaproficientsaxophonistbythetimeofhisgraduationfromhighschoolattheageof18,whenhelaunchedhisprofessionalcareerandbegantouringwithanumberofswingbands.Thefirstinstrumentheboughtwasanaltosaxophonebutafterayearheswitchedtothetenorsaxophone,influencedbytheplayingofLesterYoung.[5]

In1949,hewasinvitedbyDizzyGillespietotourwithhisorchestra.In1950,LateefreturnedtoDetroitandbeganhisstudiesincompositionandfluteatWayneStateUniversity.ItwasduringthisperiodthatheconvertedtoIslamasamemberoftheAhmadiyyaMuslimCommunity.[6]HetwicemadethepilgrimagetoMecca.[7]

In2005,NicolasHumbert&WernerPenzel,directorsofthefamousStepAcrossTheBorder,filmBrotherYusef(http://www.cultureunplugged.com/play/5795/BrotherYusef),inhiswoodenhouseinthemiddleofaforestinMassachusetts.

Prominence

Lateefbeganrecordingasaleaderin1957forSavoyRecords,anonexclusiveassociationwhichcontinueduntil1959theearliestofLateef'salbum'sforthePrestigesubsidiaryNewJazzoverlapwiththem.MusicianssuchasWilburHarden(trumpet,flugelhorn),bassistHermanWright,drummerFrankGant,andpianistHughLawsonwereamonghiscollaboratorsduringthisperiod.

By1961,withtherecordingofIntoSomethingandEasternSounds,Lateef'sdominantpresencewithinagroupcontexthademerged.His'Eastern'influencesareclearlyaudibleinalloftheserecordings,withspotsforinstrumentsliketherahab,shanai,arghul,kotoandacollectionofChinesewoodenflutesandbellsalongwithhistenorandflute.Evenhisuseofthewesternoboesoundsexoticinthiscontextitisnotastandardjazzinstrument.Indeed,thetunesthemselvesareamixtureofjazzstandards,bluesandfilmmusicusuallyperformedwithapiano/bass/drumsrhythmsectioninsupport.Lateefmadenumerouscontributionstootherpeople'salbumsincludinghistimeasamemberofsaxophonistCannonballAdderley'sQuintetduring196264.



Lateefperformingin2007attheDetroitJazzFestival

Lateef'ssoundhasbeenclaimedtohavebeenamajorinfluenceonthesaxophonistJohnColtrane,whoselaterperiodfreejazzrecordingscontainsimilarly"Eastern"traits.Foratime(196366)LateefwassignedtoColtrane'slabel,Impulse.Hehadaregularworkinggroupduringthisperiod,withtrumpeterRichardWilliamsandMikeNockonpiano.

Inthelate1960shebegantoincorporatecontemporarysoulandgospelphrasingintohismusic,stillwithastrongbluesunderlay,onalbumssuchasDetroitandHush'n'Thunder.Lateefexpressedadislikeoftheterms"jazz"and"jazzmusician"asmusicalgeneralizations.[8]Asissooftenthecasewithsuchgeneralizations,theuseofthesetermsdounderstatethebreadthofhissound.Forexample,inthe1980s,Lateefexperimentedwithnewageandspiritualelements.

In1960,Lateefagainreturnedtoschool,studyingfluteattheManhattanSchoolofMusicinNewYorkCity.HereceivedaBachelor'sDegreeinMusicin1969andamaster'sdegreeinmusiceducationin1970.Startingin1971,hetaughtcoursesin"autophysiopsychicmusic"attheManhattanSchoolofMusic,andhebecameanassociateprofessorattheBoroughofManhattanCommunityCollegein1972.

In1975,LateefcompletedhisdissertationonWesternandIslamiceducationandearnedaEd.D.inEducationfromtheUniversityofMassachusettsAmherst.Intheearly1980sLateefwasaSeniorResearchFellowattheCenterforNigerianCulturalStudiesatAhmaduBelloUniversityinthecityofZaria,Nigeria.ReturningtotheUSin1986hetookajointteachingpositionattheUniversityofMassachusettsandHampshireCollege.

Latercareer

His1987albumYusefLateef'sLittleSymphonywontheGrammyAwardforBestNewAgeAlbum.[9][10]Hiscoreinfluences,however,wereclearlyrootedinjazz,andinhisownwords:"Mymusicisjazz."[11]

In1992,LateeffoundedYALRecords.In1993,LateefwascommissionedbytheWDRRadioOrchestraColognetocomposeTheAfricanAmericanEpicSuite,afourpartworkfororchestraandquartetbasedonthemesofslaveryanddisfranchisementintheUnitedStates.ThepiecehassincebeenperformedbytheAtlantaSymphonyOrchestraandtheDetroitSymphonyOrchestra.

In2010hereceivedthelifetimeJazzMasterFellowshipAwardfromtheNationalEndowmentfortheArts(NEA),anindependentfederalagency.[10][12]Establishedin1982,theNationalEndowmentfortheArtsJazzMastersawardisthehighesthonorgiveninjazz.[13]

ManhattanSchoolofMusic,whereLateefhadearnedabachelor'sandamaster'sdegree,awardedhimitsDistinguishedAlumniAwardin2012.

Lateef'slastalbumswererecordedforAdamRudolph's"MetaRecords".Totheendofhislife,hecontinuedtoteachattheUniversityofMassachusettsAmherstandHampshireCollegeinwesternMassachusetts.LateefdiedonthemorningofDecember23,2013,attheageof93,survivedbyhisson,YusefLateefandhiswife,AyeshaLateef.[14]
