If there is anybody who doesn’t know about Daisy, she is the little dog that was walking at Oakwell Hall and ran off after being scared by a bigger dog, she ran through the fields and ended up on the M62 where she got knocked down by a car. Miraculously she survived and after initially thinking that she would lose her sight in one eye and possibly be brain damaged that proved not be so, her sight came back and there didn’t appear to be any brain damage but she had a lot of ligament and soft tissue damage to one of her back legs. Daisy was adopted from YRDR and her owner could not afford the large Vet bill so we did a lot of fund raising just for Daisy’s Vet bill, we had a bacon butty and tombola

morning at Oakwell Hall and the turn our was fantastic, we raised £950 and then we had a Just Giving page which raised £1795, also many people just gave us money or dropped money off at our Vets for Daisy. In total we raised approximately £3000 which will hopefully cover her bill.

Daisy had the fixator which has been on her leg for 8 weeks off on Friday 18th December, Keith the Vet was happy with the result and in the New Year Daisy will have physiotherapy and hydrotherapy to strengthen the leg, keep your fingers crossed that everything goes well and Daisy will soon be enjoying her walks at Oakwell Hall again.

Once again a BIG THANK YOU to everybody who donated and sent get well soon messages to Daisy.

BEWARE ANTIFREEZE AND ROCK SALT

Be careful at this time of the year that your pet does not come into contact with antifreeze or rock salt/grit, always wash your dog’s paws when you come back from a walk. The symptoms of ingesting anti-freeze include vomiting, seizures, appearing sleepy and a heightened breathing rate. Symptoms of consuming rock salt - which contains the same ingredient as table salt, sodium chloride, but also has harmful chemicals such as magnesium - include burns to the mouth and throat and excessive

salivating and drinking. DOG THEFT AND MICROCHIPS

Dog theft is rife at the moment, if there are any readers who are unaware of the amount of dogs that are stolen please do not leave your dog tied up outside a shop or left in the garden on its own and when you are out walking make sure your dog is in your sight the whole time.

Please check that your dog is actually registered with the chip company, there have been a lot of cases lately of dogs being found which are chipped but the chip has never been registered. Stolen dogs are turning up anywhere in the country and it is vital that they are chipped and registered if there is any chance of them being reunited with their families.

Also I am surprised at the amount of dogs that do not have an ID tag on their collar, when questioned the owners nearly always say it’s alright it is microchipped. I then say don’t you think it would be a lot easier for the person who found your dog to just phone the Number on the collar rather then have to trail to a vet to get it checked for a chip apart from all the upset it would cause you and stress for the dog. More often then not the next time I see the dog it still has no ID tag.

HUNSWORTH SCARECROW COMPETITION

Hunsworth village have a scarecrow competition each year and I particularly liked this one that Tracey and her niece made, it got into the local paper the Spenborough Guardian. This is what the plaque at the side of Bertie said.

Bertie Bassett has a new friend, his name is Liquorice, recently rescued from Yorkshire Rose Dog Rescue. Liquorice had a difficult start to life but has fallen on his feet with Bertie, they are inseparable, he loves his walks with Bertie and enjoys his liquorice allsorts food.

SOME OF OUR LATEST DOGS IN RESCUE TO SEE ALL OUR DOGS PLEASE TAKE A LOOK AT

CHASE

Chase is a beautiful 6yr old Rottweiler who is vaccinated, neutered and microchipped. He is perfectly housetrained and is happy to be left for a few hours. Chase is well trained with good recall. He would be best as the only dog in the house as he can get possessive over toys and treats. He could not live with a cat or other small furries. Chase will make a very loyal loving companion and just enjoys being with you.

!

KENNY

Kenny is approx 4/5 month old terrier cross. He is a playful puppy but needs to learn a few manners as he does a lot of puppy mouthing but we are trying to teach him not to! He has learnt basic sit and paw commands very quickly. He is vaccinated, chipped and has been neutered. Kenny walks nicely on a lead, plays nicely with other dogs, will be crate trained but not 100% house trained yet. He is just a typical boy terrier puppy.

! ! SOME OF OUR LATEST DOGS TO BE REHOMED

ELLA

Carol adopted the gorgeous Ella from YRDR last February as her previous owners did not have the time to give to her and she wasn’t getting out for walks, that would have been very boring for her. Carol has sent the following update on Ella. Hi do you remember us? We adopted Ella formerly Bella from you in Feb and we thought that you would like an update of our gorgeous girl. Ella always get's a lot of comments from people where ever we go, as to what breed she is and what a beautiful looking dog, we have had all sorts of suggestions from a Hyena to a Dingo (yes Really) So we thought we would have a DNA test done, the results came back that she is half Siberian Husky 1/4 Staffy and 1/4 Yorkie, yep where the Yorkie came in I don't know haha She has no German Shepherd in her blood as we and the Vet thought, she is turning out to be a lovely dog, still a bit giddy around other dogs but she is getting better. I take her to bronze good citizenship every week, she has her bronze test in a couple of weeks, she does very well that the trainer has put us up in to the silver class. We have also just started going to Rally and she also does very well in this, she is very bright and picks things up so quickly. We feel that we are the lucky ones to have her, we love her to bits, she comes on all the walks with me every day about 4 times a day to burn all that energy off, so lots of exercise and socialising. We are going to the Lakes again for a week, Ella loves it there, first when we took her she didn’t really know what to make of the water but now loves to paddle about.

MAC

Mac was in rescue because his owner’s young child was very ill and in hospital and poor Mac was being left for many hours on his own. Peter and Sara in Gargrave offered to foster him but we have to report that they have sadly failed as first time fosterers….as they fell in love with this handsome boy and Mac is now a permanent fixture in their beautiful Dales farmhouse.

BAILEY

We were asked to rehome three tiny Yorkies after their owner had died, the poor dogs were in a terrible state all matted and sore. We immediately found a foster carer for them and got them Vet Checked and groomed, they all needed neutering and major dental work. They have all now found loving new homes with owners who have previously adopted dogs from us. Below are the before and after pictures of little Bailey.

Page 7: YRDR NEWSLETTER DECEMBER 2015 · What another fantastic day we had at our 7th Dog Show at Oakwell Hall, the weather once again was gorgeous, which meant that we had a great turn out

BECKIE

How stunning is Beckie, she was found roaming in Cleckheaton, wet through and limping badly, she was taken to the Vets to check for a microchip and get her some pain relief. Beckie the Vet Nurse could not bear to see her go to the pound and so offered to foster her for the 28 days needed before she could be rehomed. No owner came forward for Beckie (the dog not the Vet nurse) and after her 28 days were up Beckie was able to have the operation that was needed on her leg, by this time Beckie’s mum who already has 2 beagles had fallen in love with her and offered her a super new home, much to our delight.

PRINCE

Prince is a 6 year old Border Collie who was living on the streets of Leeds with his Alcoholic owner. The pair were sleeping in doorways, sheltering from the gales and rain because the owner had been evicted from his tenancy and was refusing to go into a Hostel and abandon Prince. Social Services asked us to take Prince into rescue in order for them to persuade the owner, who is in poor health, to take up a room at

the Hostel. Prince is at present being fostered and Christine the fosterer is considering keeping him, fingers crossed.

Companion Care Vets and Pets at Home Birstal attended, the Vets were giving free mini health checks and you could have a chat with them about any worries that you had about your dog.

one which is always popular. New this year was a Teddy tombola, a winner every time and a wine or water stall, pay your £1 choose your bottle, one in five was a bottle of wine.

! !

Also new this year was sausage bobbing, some people were a bit unsure if it was for them or their dogs, but it was most certainly for the dogs, remember apple bobbing when you were a kid at party’s well it was like that but with hot dog sausages for the dogs, it was very popular and very funny to watch, some dogs had no idea what to do, some dogs just gobbled as many sausages as they could in the time allocated and some dogs just laid in the paddling pool as the weather was so hot.

!

Parrott Rescue also attended this year they brought some very attractive birds (of the feathered kind)

I would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to everybody who helped to make this event so successful, from the people who sponsored the classes to the people on car parking duties and all the people in between, far too many to mention individually but they know who they are and how much we appreciate their help. Another BIG THANK YOU to all the people who supported us by attending. It is a lot of hard work organizing the Dog Show but it makes it all worth while when we had such a good day and we raised £4064, which is an excellent amount.

Page 12: YRDR NEWSLETTER DECEMBER 2015 · What another fantastic day we had at our 7th Dog Show at Oakwell Hall, the weather once again was gorgeous, which meant that we had a great turn out

Pets at Home Birstal, very kindly lent us their Christmas Tree and we turned it into a memory tree for the much loved pets that people had lost. It was £1 for a bauble and tag, you just wrote your Pets name on the tag and a little message if you wanted and hung it on the tree. The tree looked lovely with all the baubles on and we raised £240.

! ! BACON BUTTY AND A BREW- SUNDAY 13TH DECEMBER

Christine, Janet, Enza, John and myself were at Oakwell Hall on Sunday 13th December to do our last fund raising event of the year, there were bacon or vegetarian sausage sandwiches, teas and coffees, also a small stall selling Christmas stocking fillers. Thank you to the people who slithered around in the mud to support us, we were not very busy but still raised £242.

! !

The following have recently donated or raised funds for us, if I have missed anybody out I apologise.

Tina adopted a tiny Chihuahua call Bunny from us in the summer and her sister Stacey ran a sponsored marathon and donated £105.

Page 13: YRDR NEWSLETTER DECEMBER 2015 · What another fantastic day we had at our 7th Dog Show at Oakwell Hall, the weather once again was gorgeous, which meant that we had a great turn out

We were chosen as Sainsbury’s at Gomersal charity of the year and have just received £100.36 that their customers had put into YRDR collection boxes. So a big thank you to Sainsbury’s customers.

Christine North had a pre Christmas girls get together in her home, she provided lovely food and drinks and there was also a raffle, she raised £230.

Lynn & Allan Brooks who adopted the gorgeous Ruby from YRDR a few years ago sent us a Christmas Donation of £100.

! Pets at Home Birstall donated a pallet full of dog food and the very kind staff even helped us load the cars up with it. You may wonder why they are dressed quite strangely, that is because they were fund raising for children in need.
