• The swings in a park move in a………………... motion .
• If something reciprocates it goes ……………and ……….
….. or ….to ………...
• Linear motion is easy to remember because it contains the
word………….inside it!
• ………………… are good at making motion happen, that
is why they are used in handles.
• A window wiper on a car is a good
example of something that…………….
TASK 3: Complete the following sentences using the Key words on the previous pages.
The four types of motion
TASK 2 : There are 4 types of motion. Divide a page in your exer-cise book into 4. Write down each word and draw an example of each motion.
• Reciprocates • Oscillates • Rotary • Linear

Mechanisms — Cams
TASK 4: Copy the diagram below, name the parts using the key words. • Pear shaped CAM • Cam Follower • Cam shaft • Cam follower guide
Mechanisms — Cam Wheels
Because the follower follows the shape of the cam wheel, different shapes of wheel will make the follower move in different ways
TASK 5: Copy, name and describe what movements are made by the wheels below.
Page 5
How far will the follower rise & fall?
Draw an eccentric wheel with an axle position that will make the follower
rise;
A —30mm (3cm)
B—45mm (4.5cm)
C– 20mm (2cm)
The shape of the cam wheel will decide how much the follower rises and falls. TASK 6: Look at the eccentric wheel below—it makes the fol-lower rise and fall..... But where you put the axle decides how much it rises and falls.

TASK 9: Produce a spider diagram of possible themes for your automata, ie the object that will move up and down on top of your automata. You may need to go onto a computer to get examples of themes. Task 10: Divide a plain page in your exercise book into 4, and draw 4 of your favourite themes from your spider diagram. Remember to refer to your assessment learning grid for initial ideas.
TASK 8: Copy out the Design Brief and Specification below and fill in the words or numbers missing from each sentence.
Design Brief; To design and make a mechanical toy.
Specification; Your toy must; Use an ..... cam to make a reciprocating motion. Use a box (carcase) that is ........................................... in size. Use ..........................................to make the box. The wheel will be made of ..................... The axle and follower will be made of ...............................

Task 11: Using the internet and the websites below find one example of an automata and ana-lyse the follow aspects:
• Materials
• Cost
• Function
• Motion
• Aesthetics
• Target group Produce the table below on Word, and paste the image above your table. Write about the different aspects of the automata in the table. See below for an example.

ASPECTS COMMENT
MATERIALS (What it sis
made from)
The automata is made from……..
COST( How much it costs) The automata costs……….
FUNCTION (How it works)
The automata works by…………..
MOTION (Type of move-ment?)
The automata moves in a………..
AESTHETICS (Shape, style, colour)
The automata is based on………….
TARGET GROUP (Who is it aimed at?)
The automata is aimed at………………..
TASK 14: You will make 2 housing joints to manufacture the frame for your automata. In your own words explain what you will use the following tools for when making a housing joint. Copy out the table below.
TEMPLATE– Cam Follower
Page 8
TASK 12: Using graph paper, draw your design to scale. You need to draw 2 copies. One will be for your exercise book and the other will be for your practical work.
• Draw a square 100mm X 100mm, this is the side of the material that you will be given.
• Draw your design onto the graph paper
• Make sure to use as much of the area as possible.
• Cut out your design using scissors. Remember you need 2 copies.
TASK 13: Once you have completed drawing your designs on graph paper copy around one of your templates onto card and cut it out with scissors. This will be your template for the practical.

DESIGN FOR HANDLE
Page 9
TASK 15: The handle for your automata will be made from ACRYLIC. Divide your page into 4 and write the heading at the top of your page, ‘ Handle Design’. Don’t forget to underline your headings! Using the research that you produced for theme designs, draw 4 differ-ent design handles. These must be related to your chosen design.
Why not try using 2D design to draw your handle. This is called Computer Aided De-sign. You could even try cut-ting it out on the laser cutter!
TEMPLATE– Handle
TASK 16: Once you have completed your designs. Decide which is your favourite and produce 2 templates for the shape of the handle. • Glue one into exercise book • Use the other for your practical. • Remember to mark out 2 holes, one for the cam shaft and one
for dowel rod.

SYSTEMS APPROACH
The systems approach is used to explain how some-thing works. It breaks it down into 3 stages, Input, Proc-ess & Output. An example of this is below. This explains how to turn the channel over on a TV using a remote control.
TASK 17 : Using the Systems approach explain in your exercise book how to do the following: • Make toast using a toaster • Taking a picture with a camera • Using your automata and making it
work.

HOMEWORK
Week Task Done?
1 Find examples of the four mo-tions in your home—sketch and label them.
2 Find SIX examples of levers in your home— draw them and explain why a lever is there.
3 Think about the ideas you have had for your toy. Get other peoples opinions about them.
4. Find examples of manufactured boards—write which ones you find, where you find them and why you think they are used.
5. Find images or objects that can be used on the follower/s.
6. Find images and materials that can be used to decorate the toy.
7. Write down the four most im-portant things that you could do to improve your toy.
