Case Study 1 – Ellen, Kilkenny, Ireland
Ellen from Kilkenny has had issues with hair colours since she started colouring her hair. It’s been a bit of a journey over the last number of years to try and find a natural hair colour that she can use to cover grey and give her hair the colour and condition she would like without causing irritation and various other allergic reactions. Her scalp is sensitive so she has spent quite a bit of time online and at health stores looking for natural hair colours and particularly PPD free hair colours. She has tried many of the hair colours that are promoted as natural but she has been frustrated each time. She found that they still had harsh chemicals and her scalp reacted each time.
A few months ago she came across the henna hair colouring from yourtonic.com and decided to try it. She didn’t have any negative reaction and hasn’t looked back. She now uses it every 3 to 4 weeks and is delighted with the outcome – at last!

The most common concerns using
henna hair colour

“I starred at her black hair. It was shiny like the promises in magazines”
Alice Sebold
Concern 1: Choosing the rightcolour with henna haircolour
Henna hair colour does not lighten the hair as it doesn’t naturally contain the permanent hair colouring ingredient PPD or PTD
Choose a colour that enhances the colour you are already or what colour you were before you went grey
You can have fun experimenting and mixing colours but these will be very subtle changes unless you go from blonde to red or dark brown!
If you have natural highlights in your hair Surya Henna cream or powder will re-emphasise your natural tones or highlights in your hair

Case Study 2 – Maureen, Dublin, Ireland
Maureen had always treated her hair with chemical based hair colours. Although she never had an allergic reaction she did find her hair was quite dry and not in the condition she would have liked. She wanted an alternative product but she also wanted something that would cover her grey. Maureen came across yourtonic.com and the henna based hair product they offered. She was a little bit nervous about using henna and also concerned about what colour to pick.
Maureen tried to pick a hair colour close to her own hair colour. She chose the light brown colour and did the recommended patch test. She then applied the colour to her hair for 20 minutes and rinsed out. She felt the colour was a little bit darker than what she was use to. As Maureen absolutely loved the condition of her hair after one application she decided to use the colour again but this time she only applied it for 15 minutes and found she got a great result with the colour. Maureen was really surprised with the condition of her hair, the fact that the colour covered her greys and that she can apply this colour whenever she wants without suffering the effects of chemicals on her hair.

Concern 2: Applying henna

prior to use
If you are happy with the colour and have had no reaction then follow the steps below
Preparation is essential; make sure you have a scissors, a watch, hair clips and a towel

Concern 2: Applying henna
hair colour continued... Towel dry your hair until it is damp
Apply gloves to protect from staining
Paint or massage colour into your hair paying particular attention to grey roots
Tip: Always do grey roots first and ensure they are covered very well with the mixture
Use fingers to massage dye from root to ends Tip: Never use a comb to apply/spread the hair colour as this removes the colour from your hair
Once applied use a plastic hair cap to cover hair and make sure all your hair is covered

“Your hair is the ball gown that you never take off”
Jo Robertson
Concern 2: Applying henna
hair colour continued... Start the processing time once you have
finished painting or massaging into the hair
Leave on your hair as per directions
The length of time will depend on the results you want – for a deeper colour and to cover grey it is necessary to leave on for an additional 30 minutes or more
When the time is complete take off cap and rinse the hair until the water runs clean
Do not use a shampoo! Only use a conditioner
Tip: Using a thermal heat cap will speed up the processing time.

Concern 3: Covering grey hair
with henna hair colour The trick to covering grey hair with henna
hair colour is the length of time you leave the colour on the hair
To get full grey coverage it is best to leave the henna hair colour for longer
Using henna hair colour in this way will only strengthen the condition of your hair, unlike chemical based hair colours
With re growth you only need to touch up your roots saving you time and money

“I didn’t want to go out but my hair looked too good to stay at home”
Anne Taintor
Concern 3: Covering grey hair
with henna hair colour cont... The length of time you leave henna hair
colour on your hair will depend on (a) the amount of grey you have and (b) the porosity of your hair
A. If you have a sprinkling of grey 30-60 minutes should be fine. If you have more than 30% grey we recommend an additional 30 minutes and for darker colours you may want to leave on for longer
B. If you have been colouring your hair for a long time then your hair may have been split by ammonia or similar chemicals that leave your hair more porous and open to soaking up colour quicker

“If your hair is done properly and you have on good shoes you can get away with anything”
Iris Apfel
Concern 3: Covering grey hairwith henna hair colour cont....Tips for dying grey roots: Start by sectioning the hair You only need to apply the henna hair colour to
the sections that needs touching up Apply the henna hair colour to each section and
massage into the roots As you are only applying the henna hair colour
to the roots only use enough to cover the grey Wrap a plastic hair cap around your head and
leave for the designated timeTip: A thermal heat cap can speed up the processing time and you can purchase these usually from a hairdressing supply storeTip: You may need to mix a slight shade darker for roots e.g. if you have dark brown hair you may get a better result if you mix in a little black as the grey can be more resistant
Case Study 3 – Caroline, Dublin, Ireland
Caroline wanted to find a hair colour that would avoid an allergic reaction but that would also provide her with full grey coverage which is important to her.
She looked at reviews online and tried several products that claimed to be natural hair colours but still had reactions. She wanted to find a hair colour without the chemicals that cause allergic reactions but also wanted a product that would cover her grey and leave her hair in good condition. About 3 months ago she decided to try the henna hair colour from yourtonic.com and was delighted when she had no allergic reactions.
Initially she followed the instructions on the pack and left it in for less than an hour. Although she found her hair looked great and was in great condition, she didn’t get full grey coverage. She experimented and discovered that if she left it for 2 hours, it did the job completely and it covered all her grey. That was over 3 months ago and she has used it every 2 weeks since, achieving full grey coverage and silky, shiny hair.

Jarod Kintz
Concern 4: Making hennahair colour lastHenna hair dye is semi permanentand washes out of the hair gradually Don’t over wash your hair. Pick a shampoo
and conditioner that will protect the colour and nourish your hair.
Tip: Avoid shampoos that contain harsh sulfactants – only use mild lathering shampoos this will be better for the condition of your hair and prolong the colour
Don’t overuse the shampoo; use a small pea size amount and lather into your hair
Concentrate the shampoo on the scalp Wash your hair in luke warm water as it
protects the hair After conditioning your hair rinse your hair
with a cool rinse to lock in moisture
