Welcome to theApril edition of your local Winchester Gazette community magazineThe clocks have gone forward now so we get to enjoy some longer days and hopefully a burst of sunshine now and then. Looking around the countryside everywhere is bursting with colour and this makes the local area look so beautiful. Enjoying nature can be so relaxing and can take you away from the busy life you may have, it can be a way to leave the stress behind, so why not take the family out for a country walk (pages 40-41). Showers are commonly associated with April and I’m sure gardeners will say we need the rain even though many of us think we don’t! Whatever the weather do try to get out and about - maybe go prepared with an umbrella just in case!

This month, we cover Isabelle’s story who’s dream is to walk without her splints and even more to run with her dog, Marley. She needs a life changing operation to do so. Read her story on pages 20-21 and if you can, please make a small donation as ‘every little helps’ quoting a famous supermarket - but it’s true!

We also feature the local girl, Zara who is appealing for people to register with Delete Blood Cancer UK as she needs to find a donor (page 12) and so do many others like her.

In this issue we have a few articles of interest in the Community News section about Chesil Youth Theatre, Macmillan, Winchester SPAA Sports Awards, Trinity Charity, Big Sleep Out 2016 and much more. Our Education News has an article about Sparsholt and it’s new zoo, education and training. Again we are calling out to all local schools and colleges to take advantage of the fact we publish your press releases for free. Please email us if you’d like to be part of the Winchester Gazette’s Education News!

Have you any news articles you would like featured on our website (www.mlggazettes.co.uk) and/or in print in your local Winchester Gazette then contact us email using [email protected]. Please do get in touch if you have any events you would like advertised on our Facebook page or in our What’s On section in the publications. We’re happy to connect on social media so do look us up!

Have a lovely April and do try to stop for a while to enjoy life’s simple pleasures along the way!

Teenage girl from Winchester appeals for people to register as potential blood stem cell donors to help save

lives – with thousands registering with Delete Blood Cancer UK in response

A teenage girl from Winchester who has leukaemia is appealing for people to register online as potential blood stem cell donors, with thousands registering with charity Delete Blood Cancer UK over the weekend in response.

The appeal is being launched by 13 year old Zara Al Shaikh, who needs a blood stem cell donation to treat her leukaemia as currently a matching donor cannot be found for her. As Zara’s heritage is half English and half Arabic, those who share her background in particular are being encouraged to register, as this is likely to provide the most suitable match for her.

Zara, who is being treated at Southampton University Hospital, was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome at the age of 11. This has now transitioned to leukaemia, which she is facing with a huge amount of courage and determination. She decided to get her hair dyed blue before she commenced chemotherapy as a way of taking control of the situation.

Zara wants to raise awareness of blood stem cell donation and to help save the lives of all those seeking matching donors. In particular, she also wants to raise awareness of patients of mixed ethnicity that tend to have more diverse tissue types, making it more difficult to find them a suitable donor match. Zara is joining with Delete Blood Cancer UK in encouraging more people of all backgrounds to register as potential blood stem cell donors.

Zara says: “Please come forward and register.

It’s really easy. You never know, you might be my match”.

Emphasising how easy it is for people to register, Caroline Portlock, Head of Donor Recruitment at Delete Blood Cancer UK, said: “Registering online as a potential blood stem cell donor only takes a few minutes but it could lead to you giving decades to someone else. It could lead to you saving Zara’s life or the life of someone else in need of a blood stem cell donation for his or her survival. Please take the time to do it as it could be one of the most important things you ever do.”

You can register in five minutes online and request a cheek swab kit that will enable you to do your own tissue test to go on the database to maybe one day become a blood stem cell donor through the Delete Blood Cancer UK website: www.deletebloodcancer.org.uk

The BodyBarn provides specialist hair and beauty treatments in a spacious refurbished barn that is set in the rural village of Stockbridge with plenty of free off road parking. My overall first impression is that the company has an up market feel and my personal customer experience was of a very high standard. The salon is a clean and functional space, with friendly experienced staff who are very welcoming ensuring you feel as comfortable as possible and the coffee is amazing! I had booked in for two semi permanent makeup treatments, eye brows and lower eyeliner.

Tamara Bonnar is such a lovely lady who has lived in the area most of her life, so we found we had quite a lot in common and knew a number of the same people, which meant conversation flowed, so I felt increasingly more comfortable throughout the treatment. I was quite nervous even though I have had my eyebrows and eye liner tattooed before, but Tamara just took all the nerves away as we chatted in the relaxing environment of the barn. The first time I had this treatment was not with Tamara, so we looked at my current tattooed eyebrows and to my surprise were not even in the slightest.

Tamara took the time to measure out and draw on eyebrows to suit my personal preference and I was involved in the decision making the whole time. When we finally agreed, I laid down on the couch and the

local anaethestic was applied and Tamara told me exactly what was happening during the whole procedure. It was a little uncomfortable for a couple of minutes, then in a way quite relaxing. The eyeliner was tattooed after the eyebrows were finished. It can feel strange having your eyes closed whilst having the eyeliner tattooed but other than that I never felt any discomfort. This particular procedure is called semi permanent makeup, however the BodyBarn offer a number of different services and to find out what other treatments are available please visit their website (www.bodybarn.com).

With many of these professional services pre and post care is highly important and you have to fill in a consultation form and apply a patch test beforehand. The after care is very straight forward, as Tamara explains to make sure you keep the area clean and dry. After about a week mine healed over. In total I think I spent about 3 hours with Tamara from start to finish and then in around 4-6 weeks, I will need to go back for a touch up! I would never go anywhere else now, I love my eyebrows and I did not realise how much of a big part of your facial look they are!

Tamara commented after the treatment “You were one of the first to try the new Goldeneye Hydro pigments range. I did two techniques, firstly Microblade to achieve the crisp eye strokes then some soft shading

with a traditional machine for depth and a 3D effect. I used the pigment Goldeneye and from the pictures you can really see how out of alignment your previous brows were. What a difference the new shape has made!”

“The reason your previous eyebrows were not even is due to the muscle above one eye engages more actively at times, and therefore this means that sometimes your brows will look uneven no matter what you do. As I say that is simply due to the fact your muscle

is more active on one side, so to achieve even eyebrows I have tried to compensate to give a more symmetrical appearance. Now when they move in your natural facial expressions they look more even than before” she continued.

Are you interested in finding out more about this semi permanent makeup treatment or any other services offered? If so, please contact The BodyBarn by telephone using the following number 01264 810004 or by email [email protected] alternatively you could use the contact form on their website www.bodybarn.com. You can also find them on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/Bodybarn

In a couple of month’s there will be the pictures from the touch up!

Transform your kitchen in days at under half the cost of a fully fitted kitchen

beforemake your kitchen a happy kitchenby changing the doors, worktops and accessories

after

The idea of choosing a new kitchen should be an exciting time. The opportunity to transform the hub of your house into your dream kitchen is one which should be a truly relaxing, enjoyable and happy experience.Yet, we know from experience that when it comes to choosing a kitchen, the choice can be simply overwhelming. From selecting the perfect colour doors and complementary worktops, to deciding if you want handles, and if you do, which handles do you choose, or do you choose handle free? To picking the latest appliances, splashbacks and extractor fans, the list really does go on.Going to a showroom can be a daunting task, especially if you haven’t pinned down the ideas that you really want. You may feel pressured into purchasing a kitchen, that you feel will ‘just do’ and not the one you really want. The kitchen has become the heart of the home, a place for the entire family to get together when life is hectic, a space for entertaining guests whilst still being part of the equation and a place to relax over a coffee and a paper, making it even more important to get it right. That’s why at Happy Kitchens, we have decided to bring the showroom to you. Being away from the dazzling and glitzy lights in the showroom really can make a world of difference. Our customers love the fact that you can see how your chosen colour scheme will look in the natural light of your own home. What looks good under a multitude of spotlights may not look the same on a grey, cold and rainy day in your kitchen. You can put your sample doors in place of your existing kitchen furniture and get a real feel for the transformation which lies ahead. We will also leave the samples with you so that you can see how they look at different times of the day and the ever changing British weather. We can also get a feel for the space you are

working with, whether it’s a new kitchen that you are after or a stunning makeover, we are then able to get a feel of what works and more importantly what doesn’t. We can guide you through the design process, giving you the best choice options without overwhelming you and provide lots of food for thought.Bringing the showroom to you really works with our popular kitchen makeovers, especially for our customers who are looking to sell their homes. A kitchen makeover is a simple and effective way to breathe new life in to your property and freshen up a tired and run down room. What’s really great about our kitchen makeovers is the price, on average it costs between 3k and 5k to makeover your kitchen and you wouldn’t be able to recognise that it’s not a brand new kitchen. What’s more staggering is that an unattractive and outdated kitchen can devalue your property anywhere between 15k and 20k. Not only this, it gives potential buyers a chance to negotiate even lower on the asking price.Often there isn’t even the need for an entire brand new kitchen to be fitted. Most kitchen cupboards

are still in great condition. At Happy Kitchens we can look at changing the doors, worktops, panel faces lighting pelmet and cornice to match the existing colours in your kitchen. This will achieve the same outcome as a brand new kitchen but without the extra time, costs and hassle. In addition, a more attractive home has a greater chance

of enticing buyers to come and view it. The more people who view your home, the more likely you are to receive an offer on your property. It really is up to how much or how little you wish to spend. Whether you are aiming to add the latest kitchen accessories like the ‘hot tap’, or just simply change the doors and worktops, we can do it for you. If you’d like us to make your kitchen a Happy Kitchen talk to us today to find out more. Good Calories vs. Bad Calories Is there such a thing?

Eating the correct amount of calories to remain within a healthy weight range is part of your overall health, but making wise educated food choices is also important in improving your general wellbeing. Calories from different sources have various effects (both good and bad) on overall health. Maximizing your intake of healthy foods while eliminating the unhealthy ones, yields benefits beyond simply controlling your weight.

Calorie BalanceManaging your weight requires you to control your daily caloric intake. First, estimate how many calories your body burns each day by using a basic calorie calculator. Next, monitor your caloric intake to see if you are generally over or under your bodies daily caloric consumption. The type of calories you consume is largely irrelevant when it comes to weight management. The effects on body weight are the same whether you eat 2,000 calories of junk or 2,000 calories of healthy food.

Good vs. Bad CaloriesThere are three main sources of calories our bodies untilise; fats, carbohydrates and proteins. While one calorie from healthy/clean food provides the same amount of energy as one calorie from unhealthy/junk food, different types of calories have different effects on your overall health. Whether you’re trying to gain, lose or maintain your weight, you need to maximize your intake of healthy calories while avoiding unhealthy ones.

FatsThere are three main types of fats; Saturated, Unsaturated and Trans fats. Saturated and Trans fats are known as the unhealthy or bad fats while unsaturated fats are known as the healthy or good ones.

Saturated and Trans fats raise cholesterol

levels and increase the risk of developing heart disease. Sources of saturated fats include animal products such as milk, butter, cheese and meat. Sources of Trans fats include any food made with hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated vegetable oil (check the ingredients list). Unsaturated fats lower cholesterol levels and decrease the risk of developing heart disease. Sources of unsaturated fats include olive oils, nuts, seeds, avocados, olives and seafood.

CarbohydratesCarbohydrates are the body’s main source of energy. Lately, they’ve gotten some bad publicity. There is nothing wrong with carbs. Carbs don’t make you gain weight, excessive calories do. Just as there are good and bad fats, there are also good and bad carbs. Carbs are made up of sugar molecules. The more sugar molecules are linked together, the more complex the carb becomes. There are two main types of carbs: simple and complex.

Simple carbs are unhealthy. They are digested and absorbed very quickly leaving you hungry soon after eating them. This increases your overall calorie intake (because you eat more of them) causing unwanted weight gain. Sources of simple carbs include crisps, juices, sodas, baked goods (doughnuts, muffins, cookies) cereal bars, and energy drinks. Limit your intake of simple carbs to before, during and after a workout. As it will then be utilised as an energy source for your workout, rather than increasing your waist line.

Complex carbs are generally a healthier option. They are digested and absorbed very slowly keeping you full (as they tend to have a lot more fibre) and preventing cravings. This slow digestion potentially lowers your caloric intake and aids you in your weight loss goals. Sources of complex carbs include legumes, lentils, beans, vegetables, brown rice, whole oat groats, whole wheat pasta etc.

endurance, weight gain, and weight loss products.

Josh

ProteinsProteins are made up of amino acids. Amino acids also make up approx 32% of your muscle mass. There are some amino acids that the body can make, (non-essential) and others that it can’t (Essential). There are two types of protein; complete and incomplete. If a protein contains all of the essential amino acids, it is complete. If it lacks one or more of the essential amino acids, it is called an incomplete protein.

The body uses proteins to build tissue including muscle. To build and repair tissue, your body needs access to all of the essential amino acids. Unfortunately, complete proteins are mainly found in unhealthy foods such as meat and dairy products which are high in saturated fats.

Try to get your protein from sources that are low in saturated fat such as soy, seafood, low-fat dairy and egg whites. Incomplete proteins are those lacking one or more of the essential amino acids. If incomplete proteins come from a wide variety of foods (nuts, seeds, grains, legumes etc), the body will still have access to all of the essential amino acids. Heck, even vegans and vegetarians can build muscle.

The Bottom LineAre all calories the same? Yes and no. They are the same in the sense that all calories, no matter the source, provide the same amount of energy to the body. You can get fat by eating an excessive amount of healthy calories just as you can lose weight by eating a restricted amount of unhealthy calories. Though the number of calories you eat controls how much you weigh and how much body fat you carry, they will not necessarily contribute to your long term health. Eating the appropriate amount of healthy calories improves overall health and promotes an appropriate body weight.

Winchester People

This month the Winchester Gazette have been finding out about a form of Cerebral Palsy

Here we talk to Hazel Mycroft, Isabelle’s Mum, about her daughter’s condition and their recent fundraising campaign for life changing surgery

Isabelle from Ropley, near Alresford is 6 years old and lives with Spastic Diplegia a form of Cerebral Palsy. Her parents, Hazel and Shawn hope that with the kindness of others that they will be able to reach a target of £50,000 to pay for specialised medical treatment in the USA. A recent successful charity ball on the 6th of February for Isabelle raised over £10,000 towards the fundraising campaign and Isabelle was certainly the ‘belle of the ball’!

Here Isabelle’s mum, Hazel speaks to the Winchester Gazette.

Isabelle has Spastic Diplegia, can you explain about the condition?

Spastic Diplegia is a form of cerebral palsy which affects all her limbs and often caused by trauma or infections while still in utero also low birthweight and prematurity. Isabelle and her twin brother were born prematurely weighing just 1lb 13oz and 1lb 7oz, so unfortunately that put them both at risk. Being born prematurely means the brain can be damaged as it is starved of oxygen.

Unfortunately, this results in the nervous system’s communication with the muscles causing permanent disability and this is what happened to Isabelle. Spastic Diplegia is not a progressive disorder, however since her legs, hips, and trunk are affected so she walks on her tip toes meaning she will develop long term deformities causing more pain and discomfort.

How does this affect Isabelle and family life on a daily basis? Isabelle’s disability hugely affects our family life and her life is incredibly challenging and difficult. Where do I start….

She struggles on a daily basis to do things that most 6 year olds take for granted. Isabelle’s balance is affected so she cannot stand still unless she is holding onto someone or something. Her balance is marginally improved when she is wears her splints (moulded plastic which force her feet flat), however she falls constantly and can be knocked over really easily. Without the splints she walks on her tip toes making buying shoes difficult to say the least and any kind of pretty shoes aren’t suitable, so trips to the shoe shop usually result in her or both of us in floods of tears. I dread the summer or Birthday parties because other girls are in pretty dresses and sandals that Isabelle can’t wear.

She can’t join in 90% of the party games – musical statues are a nightmare. When she was younger she didn’t mind me staying to help her but now she is 6 years old it is difficult as other children are being independent. Socialising with friends becomes a struggle due to her needs. She tires very easily due to the effort it takes to walk and maintain her balance for any distance using her Kaye Walker walking frame (which she hates). Isabelle’s balance problems mean that she cannot carry or hold anything whilst standing,

she needs assistance to wash & dress and to use the bathroom. Poor mobility means the majority of my time is spent carrying or lifting her to help her achieve normal everyday tasks.

I used to be a lecturer is psychology…. I worry hugely about Isabelle’s self-confidence, her self-esteem and body image. We have always had a positive attitude towards Isabelle’s disability and we’ve tried not to limit her expectations. However, that said I do have to constantly assess any activities or outings as a family as to whether it’s suitable for Isabelle, and how will she feel if she can’t join in. I also have two other children and unfortunately their lives are also restricted as a result of Isabelle’s disability. It’s hard but if you can imagine from this second onwards that you could not stand still – think about all the things you do every day that you would no longer be able to do. I watch my beautiful little girl struggle every day as she fights Spastic Diplegia and until I heard about this operation I felt totally helpless.

How did you find out about the operation in USA?

Isabelle horse rides with riding for the disabled as research has shown that this can be invaluable for children living with this condition. There I met another mum whose son also has Spastic Diplegia and he had been to the USA for surgery called Selective Dorsal Rhizotmomy (SDR). However, at the time it was very difficult to face the reality that Isabelle needed major Spinal surgery as the risks include permanent paralysis and incontinence. Despite my concerns, we decided to have a consultation to find out if she was a suitable candidate. We also explored the possibility of funding in the UK however this is not possible, so any chance of SDR for Isabelle will need to be privately funded including the physiotherapy afterwards. We went through a lengthy application process and found out just before Christmas that Dr Park in the USA considered her an excellent candidate. So we started fundraising for the cost of the treatment not including our travel and accommodation expenses.

What results can be expected from the operation?

Nobody can say for definite what Isabelle will be able to achieve, it is the only procedure available to permanently remove the spasticity in her legs but by default she will be left with the much weaker muscles. SDR is not a magic cure, she won’t wake up from the operation and be ‘normal’ – she will always live with Spastic Diplegia. However, it will give the best chance of living a pain free independent life. Dr Park thinks

she will be able to walk flat footed and maybe even run in the future. We hope her balance will be much improved so she can stand independently as this alone would revolutionise her life.

What is Isabelle most looking forward to after the potentially life changing surgery?

If you asked her she would probably say walking our 5 month old Labrador which will eventually be trained to be her assistance dog, as well as our family pet. She would love to do ballet too – as most girls her age do. For us, to see our gorgeous girl walk without a frame, run with her brothers would be absolutely amazing … as it’s been her dream for so long.

What would you say to anyone thinking about donating? This is a chance to literally change a local young girl’s life and therefore our lives as a family. She never complains, she never says ‘why me mummy’, or ‘it’s not fair’. When her younger baby brother started to walk…..instead of being bitter or jealous she went over to him hugged him and said “King Benjamin you are walking that’s so amazing” – I had to leave the room as tears were streaming down my face. We are trying to do everything in our power to make her dreams come true and you could be a part of it.

To help Isabelle and her family get closer to their target you can donate by visiting;

“Grinning and bearing it is the worst thing you can do” – (Daily Telegraph, Feb 26th 2016). This is based on research by psychologists from the University of Toronto who looked mainly at the suppressed emotions of parents. We are told about managing our feelings and not over burdening our children. But do we believe that children do not pick up on parental stress? And what does this do to us? “The person who puts on a smile in order to keep someone else happy could suffer as a result of bottled up emotions.”

How often are we surprised by someone who seems to cope with a smile and yet suffers from raised blood pressure, anxiety, depression, migraines or other physical and psychological symptoms which are at least partly due to stress? How much easier if we

Grin and bear it!!!

can learn to express ourselves and at the same time not feel guilty or hurt others? It is the fear that we may be seen as not a good parent, partner or colleague which can often lead us to grin and bear it.

If you recognise this in yourself and wish that you could give yourself the permission to stop putting up with situations where you find yourself responding with an accepting smile while inwardly struggling with what you are asked to accept or do, then perhaps you might like to see how you can change the way you respond which can also makes you feel better and more heard by others.

If you feel that you would like to stop “grinning and bearing” the things that life throws at you, perhaps talking to one of our experienced and supportive counsellors might help you discover that there are other ways to manage your life without it affecting your mental and physical health.

British Summer Time? - Is it really Summer time?! The clocks have changed and we can start to enjoy the light evenings, however it’s not quite BBQ time yet!

It is however a wonderful time in the garden with new growth all around us and hopefully, some warm days to enjoy in between the April showers and cold nights.

Frost is still a risk so delay planting out Summer bedding plants until the end of the month and continue to grow most vegetable seeds under glass.

Grass Care - This is a time of year to really make a difference to your grassed areas. As well as starting regular cutting it’s also the time to remove any weeds and over seed the bare or worn patches.

If the whole lawn is affected then a general fertiliser and weed treatment can really help to improve it for the Summer ahead.

If you don’t already have one then it’s a great idea to create a compost area or buy a plastic composter, a great way of recycling the grass cuttings along with old cardboard and food waste.

Hedges and Shrubs - If hedges and shrubs got out of control last year then they may need a good cutback ahead of the summer growing months, however beware of any birds nesting at this time of year before working on hedges.

In general it’s a great month all round, just beware of all those weeds starting to appear, get on top of them so they don’t take over!!

If you want the results but need some help or simply don’t have the time and want to keep your weekends free then I can offer regular grass cutting and general maintenance services.

IVA’S, BANKRUPTCY, LIQUIDATIONS, ADMINISTRATIONS, CVA’S

INDIVIDUALS, SOLE TRADERS, PARTNERSHIPS, LIMITED COMPANIES

We have all seen those adverts in the paper or on the TV which encourage you to take out an IVA and, “using a little known piece of government legislation”, write off 75% of your debts.

Well surprise surprise, if it seems too good to be true that is because it is too good to be true!

IVA’s or to give them their full name “Individual Voluntary Arrangements” are an alternative to Bankruptcy whereby you pay back what you can afford for 5 years and creditors will, generally, write off up to 75% of what they are owed. This is because, if you have nothing to lose, creditors would rather receive something (i.e. 25p in the £) over 5 years through an IVA than nothing in Bankruptcy.

If you have nothing to lose, the proper advice would not necessarily be an IVA but Bankruptcy whereby you write off 100% of your debts and you don’t have to pay something for 5 years.

An IVA may be appropriate where you do have something to lose, such as the equity in your home or your job/career prospects. In these instances creditors will generally favour an IVA against Bankruptcy because they are likely to receive a bigger pay out through an IVA than Bankruptcy.

If you can afford to pay your debts in full then creditors are unlikely to write off any of their debts, let alone 75%.

If you are facing financial difficulty and would like to know what the right options are for you then call Beacon on 08000 843841 for a free initial consultation.

CASE STUDYMr B came to see the experts at Beacon about a year ago. He had got into financial difficulty due to a period of unemployment and through having to look after his wife who was seriously ill. He owed almost £80,000 on numerous credit cards and bank loans.

What he wanted was to be given time to sell the matrimonial home and pay his debts in full from the equity in the house which was over £100,000.

I asked him how his wife felt about that? He said that she was fine and would go along with whatever was best for him. I advised that what was best for him was not necessarily best for her. As she was the joint owner of the property half of the equity in it was hers and why would she want to pay off his debts for him?

I suggested that she take her own independent advice and as a consequence she was advised to keep her share of the sale of the property.

Mr B then entered into an IVA with his creditors and put all of his 50% share of the equity in the property into the IVA. Creditors received nearly 70% of what they were owed and wrote off the balance.

Mrs B was left with enough to put down a deposit on a small flat. If she had allowed her husband to use her money to pay his creditors they would have been left with very little.

Can you really write off 75% of your debts through an IVA?

With imminent arrival of Spring it may be time to blow out the cobwebs with a stroll around the town or the park with family or friends. This may sound simple or taken for granted to most of us but those with restricting mobility problems, this simple joy may feel like a burden to those that it affects. Not being able to keep up or having to stop to catch a breath are both common reason our customers come to us for advice on what help is available to them. More often than not, Sons or daughters looking for mum or dad are the first point of contact we have, starting the research or gathering information ‘to plant the seed’ on the wide range that is available to purchase from Hampshire Mobility Services.

The simple starting point could just be a walking stick to provide a more little confidence when walking, traditional wooden canes to patterned sticks, short version and tall options we can measure the user for the correct height to ensure the best fit and we may be able to colour co-ordinate with an outfit for that special day! More popular recently is to have the ferrule (the rubber tip on the end) exchanged for a Tri-tip to provide more stability when walking.

Tri-Walker (3 wheel’s) are a help around the home, some with a tray and basket and all with a bag, the tri is a helpful aid to prevent falls while carrying items. Rollators (4 wheeled walkers) are the perfect aid for help around the town, shops or the trip to the hair dressers, all of the range Hampshire Mobility offer have the advantage of a seat for when a short break is needed. Height adjustable handle’s on both the Tri and the Rollator means we can assess and adjust to the correct height for correct use and confidence. Both are easily transportable in the car, taxi or bus as they fold, some more that others but during our assessment we can offer advice on which one will fit your needs and be the best solutions for the user.

Whatever your walking aid needs, at Hampshire Mobility Service we are pleased to offer free advice and a comprehensive range products to suit the needs to keep people moving, socialising and independent.

Now in our new shop in Abbey Walk in Romsey town centre, we have an even larger range and stock of bathroom aids, wheelchairs, mobility scooters and Stannah Stairlifts to try. Free quotations and home visits available.

For those with mobility or dexterity issues these can be great solution as the remote buttons are easy to use. If you have young children the lack of cords also removes any risk of strangulation. On the other hand you may just simply like the idea of not having to get up to close or open a blind - who doesn’t just want to lie in bed in the morning and checkout what the day has in store whilst still wrapped up warm in their duvet.

The great thing about technology is that it keeps moving forward and that benefits us all.

The blinds need NO hardwiring as they come with a re-chargeable battery in the head casing which is simply recharged by charging via a charging cable like you would a mobile. For larger blinds a hardwired solution may be a better solution and in some cases these can be integrated with home automation system. A free home design consultation is a great way to see what available options are.

The Great Shutter Co. offer motorised pleated, rollers, roman, venetians as well as some fancier blinds that are great for controlling privacy and light. With motorisation

Education NewsZoo training taken to a higher level at

Sparsholt CollegeLeaders in zoo education and training, Sparsholt College are launching advanced, innovative qualifications aimed at those either working in or looking to work in zoos. From September 2016, the new BSc Honours in Zoo Biology and Masters Degree in Applied Zoo Biology will offer learners a unique perspective on zoo management and research. The courses, validated by the University of Portsmouth will make use of the College’s impressive zoo-licenced Animal Management Centre which is home to one of the largest collections of animals in a UK college with more than 1000 animals from 200 species. The newly developed Aquatic Research Centre promotes involvement in the conservation and husbandry of aquatic species and habitats, while extensive industry links provide innumerable opportunities for industry based practice and application. Explaining why there is an industry demand for these higher level qualifications course tutor Steve Nash, said: “It is incredibly competitive trying to work in zoos with hundreds of people after each job. Zoos now need higher level qualifications linked to international strategies for zoo conservation which are up to date, relevant and with excellent industry links.” These degrees are designed to expand graduates’ knowledge of zoo animal biology and refine research techniques in aspects of zoo animal welfare, behaviour and population management. The courses put a unique emphasis on the roles played by modern zoos, including visitor engagement, evidence based husbandry and their contributions to the wider conservation community. Sparsholt College has a national and international reputation for providing training and professional development for the zoo industry. With research-active

industry experts on the teaching team, students will benefit from the strong national and international links as they undertake research and learning ‘evidence-based’ husbandry which promotes good animal welfare through science and research. Both courses are either one year full time or two years distance learning, with the option for distance students on the MSc to include the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training free of charge. Popes Lane (photo 3) and down a good quality farm track.

Just as we are settling into a pleasant routine on this chalk based track we have to take the first and only right hand footpath, signposted through the trees after about 300 metres. This takes us between close cropped trees, crosses a forest access trail and emerges at a field with a set of wooden stables at the far side. We must aim to follow the path just to the left of this fence to the left of their boundary line, crossing two consecutive stiles on the way.

Once out on the road, Red Lane, we turn left heading up the lane, with the option of taking the parallel path just inside the tree line on the left. This road continues for over a kilometre before transferring at a gate to a gravel trail (photo 4); just to the right appears a path offering the Monarch Way as well as private access to Roughway Farm and an aircraft grass landing strip.

There now follows an extended walk on this

gravel path that sometimes switches to stone and later on to grass or mud. It climbs gently for almost 2 kilometres before dropping onto a road (Baybridge Lane), where we turn right for a short distance before sweeping right again into a well marked and well used footpath. From here we follow the main path to the right after some 600 metres, past Woodstock Down Farm and left, still following the footpath beside some horse gallops and down onto a new road.

The signpost ahead states 1.5 miles to Upham (photo 5), but while we turn right as the arrow requires, the distance left is considerably less than suggested although the final sting comes in the fairly testing climb back up into Upham village, straight past the recreation ground and down the road, leaving the Brushmakers Arms on your right and retrieving the transport.

This month’s walk involves a foray beyond the Test Valley and is longer than many of the earlier

outings from this selection. It mixes parts of the Monarch Way, Alan King Way and Pilgrims Trail. The suggested start location is beside the Brushmakers Arms, Shoe Lane, Upham, SO32 1JJ. Parking is recommended near the village pond just 200 metres from the local pub.

The walk covers approximately 6 miles across the Downs, not hard walking, but the finish has a small sting in the tail. It should take the active walker about 2 hours to complete.

Heading away from the pond up the lane, past the church (photo 1), we turn right at the junction and in another 100 metres turn left over a stile (photo 2) with arrows offering us a route on the Monarch Way. Taking a line across this field to the next stile, we cross this and take the left hand option tracing the path round the edge of the field that pushes us right and slightly downhill to a path that divides off at the bottom. This section has been worn away by rain erosion and leads us to a gate and a

downhill stretch through the next field with a panoramic view of the way ahead.

Keep to the right in this field as the next swing gate appears in the corner to take us over a stile then uphill towards a tree and fence line. At the top we cross another stile and have 3 options for directions, our route now takes us left along the hedge and eventually heading to Sweet Briar Cottage beside a gate and the beginning of a metalled section of road. After about 400 metres this road veers sharply to the left, at which point we need to turn right at the corner of

Community NewsChesil Youth Theatre rises to the Challenge

Two groups from Winchesters Chesil Youth Theatre performed new plays on 4th and 5th February 2016 each topical and relevant to their age group. Chesil Theatre juniors, aged 8 to 11, looked at the changing nature of childrens playtime, comparing 1970 to 2016. Through a time portal, youngsters glued to their mobile phones, tablets and computer games met their counterparts with skipping ropes and space hoppers. When the reverse took place and the 1970s children were catapulted into todays generation, they found themselves puzzled. Why did no one go outdoors to play? What had happened to chatty family mealtimes together? Play was written for the Chesil Youth Theatre by their director, Corinne James, herself a Drama Therapist and the theme gave rise to interesting discussions during rehearsal. Corinne commented: Given the

choice, all the children opted for playing with others rather than relying on electronic gadgetry. I’m Spilling My Heart Out Here by Stacey Gregg was the choice for the senior group, performed as part of the National Theatre Connections 500 project. This was the story of a group of secondary school students, involving typical teenage themes virginity and how to lose it, being outed at school, the activities of a creepy man at the local cafe and his attempts to lure girls through free drinks. The writing was not easily accessible and presented a challenge to the nine-strong cast. Gemma Wilson and Helen Kearns came over particularly well with their strong yet sensitive performances. The play will be performed again at St Johns Church in March with the possibility of being chosen for one of the National Theatres partner venues later in the year.

A unique event starring actors Tim Pigott-Smith and Dame Sian Phillips will be staged at the Guildhall in Winchester on Sunday 24 April to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday.

The Royal Throne is a re-creation of significant moments in the history of the Crown, through the words of some of the Queen’s predecessors and writers ranging from Shakespeare to Jane Austen and Horace Walpole to William Makepeace Thackeray. The performance will also feature some less serious views in the vein of 1066 And All That.

The recital is compiled and produced by local writer John Miller and features two stars of stage and screen, Tim Pigott-Smith and Dame Sian Phillips.

John Miller said: I am pleased that Winchester is celebrating such a special occasion, and delighted that two of my favourite actors have agreed to come and perform this recital.

Tim Pigott-Smith has just completed a much-acclaimed run on Broadway in King Charles III, playing our future King, and Sian Phillips was created a Dame in the New Year’s Honours List.

She is currently starring in Les Blancs by Lorraine Hansberry at the National Theatre. I have worked with both of them on various shows, and look forward with great anticipation to hearing them re-create some very different monarchs – from Richard II, Henry VIII, Charles I and George VI, to Anne Boleyn, Victoria, and both Elizabeth I and II. The performance is presented by Guildhall Winchester and Winchester City Council in the Bapsy Hall at the Guildhall on Sunday 24 April 2016. Doors open at 7pm Tickets are £10 (£8 for students with a valid NUS card) and are available from the Tourist Information Centre, Winchester Guildhall and www.seetickets.com For more information please contact 01962 840500/840820 or visit www.guildhallwinchester.co.uk The Queen’s 90th birthday will see her become the longest-serving monarch in British history. Winchester will also mark the occasion when the Cathedral holds a special service attended by the Lord Lieutenant in the afternoon of 24 April.

Winchester stages unique event to mark Queen’s Birthday Naomi House is looking for people who want to use their counselling experience to make a positive impact on the lives of families coming to terms with caring for a child with a life-limiting condition, as well as offering bereavement support.

The vacancy is open to qualified counsellors who want to play a key role within the charity’s professional counselling service provided to local families.

Naomi House will provide an introductory 20 hour training course, monthly supervision, regular training and the opportunity to be part of a progressive organisation providing an invaluable service.

Sue Wilkins, of the Naomi House Family Support Team, commented: “For any parent the experience of your child being diagnosed with a life limiting illness is absolutely devastating. As parents tell us, the diagnosis impacts upon everyone in the family including brothers, sisters, and grandparents. Whilst it is normal and understandable that individuals will experience painful and difficult emotions we also know that at times these feelings may be overwhelming, resulting in anxiety or low mood. Relationships with family and friends can be placed under severe pressure. At times such as these the

Join Team Macmillan in Winchester and Make a Real Difference Today

2015 was a bumper year for local fundraisers from Macmillan Cancer Support. The dedicated team of local volunteers gathered over £3000 in donations from the generous residents of the Winchester district. This money will be used to fund vital services, from the famous Macmillan nurses, to running information and support centres and the huge range of other services that Macmillan provide to support people affected by cancer. Buoyed by their impressive total, the small team have set their sights on a record breaking fundraising year in 2016 and are hoping to raise of £6000.This fundraising total is all the more impressive when you learn that the Winchester fundraising team currently consists of only two highly dedicated volunteers When you put your money in a Macmillan bucket at Winchester train station, outside Argos or inside Marks and Spencer, that bucket is almost definitely in the hands of Chelle or Simon – a couple who really do go above and beyond for their cause. To help secure an even more successful year of fundraising in 2016 Chelle says “We are really

pleased with the fundraising we have carried out so far and have been amazed by how much has been raised. We are so passionate about this cause. With some extra help we could raise even more, which would be incredible. It doesn’t matter how much or little time someone can spare – it would be greatly appreciated.” The dedicated fundraising volunteers are also supported by a raft of powerful individual efforts and no discussion of Macmillan fundraising in Winchester would be complete without mentioning the incredible team behind Peddle, Paddle, Pace the annual Winchester triathlon dedicated to raising funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. The event will return on July 17th this year so now is the time to dust off your running shoes and pump up those rowing arms! If you are interested in joining the Winchester area fundraisers you can find out more at the Macmillan website http://volunteering.macmillan.org.uk/ or by contacting local Fundraising Manager, Alice Dewsnap-Smith at [email protected]

Hampshire County Council grant supports Winchester’s vulnerable and homeless

Hampshire County Council Leader, Councillor Roy Perry, has awarded a grant of £60,000 for a Winchester-based charity which supports homeless and vulnerable people in the city, and surrounding areas. At his latest Decision Day, the County Council Leader and Executive Member for Policy and Resources approved funding for Trinity Winchester, which helps around 800 people each year who are vulnerable to homelessness, addiction, physical/mental ill-health, poverty, social isolation and domestic abuse.

Councillor Perry said: “Trinity offers help and assistance to some of the most vulnerable people in the community, and acts as a lifeline for those who come to find shelter, advice, and support. The services offered by Trinity are in constant demand, and I hope this grant will go some way to helping the charity to provide crucial support to those in need.” The County Council’s grant of £60,000 to Trinity Winchester’s core costs will be divided into three payments of £20,000 per year, over three financial years from 2016/17.

Trinity Winchester launches Big Sleep Out 2016, the first major fundraising

event of its 30th anniversaryLeading Winchester homelessness charity, Trinity Winchester, has launched the Big Sleep Out 2016 which will take place again this year in the Inner Close of Winchester Cathedral. The event on 6th May will be the first major fundraiser of Trinity Winchester’s 30th anniversary and the charity has much planned to mark this prestigious celebratory year. Last year’s Big Sleep Out, which saw 150 people attend during the evening, and 77 sleepers, raised over £21,000 and Trinity plans to do even better this year. It is hoped that hundreds of local people and businesses will take part in the challenge to raise money for people who are homeless or vulnerable. Since Trinity Winchester was formed in 1986, the charity has supported more than 10,000 people by offering emotional and practical support, helping to prevent people becoming homeless and empowering people to make positive changes. One such person who has been helped by Trinity is Jamie who had a high powered job, and was married with two children. But within a six week period, he was made redundant, his wife left him, his brother was diagnosed with cancer and he lost his best friend in a motorbike accident. This led to a deterioration in his mental health, he became unable to maintain his accommodation and soon he was sleeping rough. Jamie was diagnosed with depression and made several suicide attempts during this time. Following his discharge from a psychiatric hospital, Jamie started visiting Trinity Winchester where he received specialist counselling and support to help him find accommodation. He has now moved into a permanent home and is retraining as a mental health practitioner. Jamie said: Without Trinity’s help, I can’t imagine where I would be. I owe them my life and I couldn’t be more grateful. Michelle Gardner, Director of Strategy and Fundraising at Trinity Winchester said: Jamie’s story, and many others like it, show how vital our work is. Unless you’ve slept out you’ll never be able to comprehend how difficult, frightening and demeaning it is, and that’s why The Big Sleep Out is such an important event. We not only aim to raise significant money, but also get people thinking about the horrors of being homeless or otherwise vulnerable. For further information about the event, or to register, please visit www.sleepoutwinchester.co.uk or email the event organiser at [email protected] or call the team on 01962 842827.

Fun and Competitive opportunities with the Winchester City Penguins

Winchester City Penguins Swimming Club (WCPSC) has continued its community engagement work by hosting another Novice Swimming Gala for emerging talent at River Park Leisure Centre on Saturday 27th February. The community event was sponsored by Winchester University, a long time support of the Charity.

Penguins fielded sixty swimmers between the ages of 7 and 11 in three teams made up from children in the WCPSC skills development squads and lessons programme. They were joined by junior swimmers from Bishops Waltham and Havant and Waterlooville swim teams and other Winchester swimmers from the River Park Swim Academy.

The gala was directed by Winchester District Sports Volunteer winner and junior programmes coordinator, Thelma Hawkings, who has been organising these novice events twice a year since 2008.

Helen Thomas, Sports Facilities and Development Manager at Winchester University said “The University of Winchester is proud to continue its support of local sports clubs, which offer the community access to a wide variety of sports in the area. The University has supported The Winchester Penguins Club for the past 8 years and it is fantastic to see so many local children enjoying swimming.”

Penguins’ chief executive, Sam Fulling, commented, “We are very grateful for the support of Winchester University which allowed us to fund this gala. Providing fun and competitive opportunities for young sporting participants in the community is a key goal for WCPSC. I am sure the families, coaches and swim teachers of those involved will join me in thanking Thelma and all the other volunteers for another brilliant event.”

“Swimming is the UK’s most popular participation sport (according to Sport England’s research). More than 2.5 million people swim at least once a week for health, fitness and general enjoyment and Penguins aim to provide access to the water to as many children and adults in the community as possible. Our only regret is that we don’t have more pool space to offer the opportunity to more people. The opportunity for a new facility at Bar End is an exciting one and we only we hope that enough swimming pool space is included to meet existing and future demand.”

Coming soon in the WCPSC swim calendar: y WCPSC Inclusive Gala for swimmers with additional needs at Kings School 18th March y WCPSC Primary Schools Gala at River Park Leisure Centre 10th June y WCPSC is always looking for new competitive swimmers to join its squads and have fun in the pool.

A record 97 nominations were made across the categories before the judging panel whittled down the submissions to select the winners in each category.

Awards were handed out on the night by Cllr Angela Clear, the Mayor of Winchester.

Tonight we had the chance to celebrate the success and time that local people have put into sport in the district, recognising our heroes who inspire, motivate and encourage people of all ages to achieve and surpass their potential.

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Justin Friel feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Winchester area and Justin is finding that his approach is

a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done

work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
