Your First Speech is “in the bag”… ! The Bag Speech: It’s all about ME! Speech #1: Informative speaking using a visual aid
Souveniers, gifts, jewelry, our first doll, a well-‐earned trophy, an heirloom passed down from three generations … Sometimes the items we cherish, the stuff we love, our THINGS define who we are. Also, we like to “show off” and even demonstrate our “things” as an extension of ourselves. Your choice of BAG and three items will be the visual aids that help you reveal at least three different aspects of your personality and character in THE BAG SPEECH, your first informative speech. What are my GOALS: •Get to know each other better … and to have FUN. •Practice the basic elements of preparing an informative speech. •Experience speaking in front of an audience using a visual aid. •Research for a quotation that captures your personality or life paradigm and providing an oral and written citation, providing the source of your famous saying. HOW WILL MY SUCCESSFUL SPEECH “LOOK”? Your speech OF 2-3 MINUTES will be comprised of “sections”/paragraphs of information about you, as illustrated/demonstrated by your quotation and four visual aides: I. INTRODUCTION: You will begin by introducing yourself by your full name.
You may give us a little background about your name/how you were named/ the origin of your name/nicknames…be creative!
II. BODY of SPEECH: Using your visual aids to detail your identity! A. THE BAG: You will show and describe your BAG, why you chose it to represent you, and anything else
you want to say about it. B. TRANSITION…ITEM 1: Reveal item one about one aspect of your life, describe it, why you brought it,
what it means to you, its history, and it’s connection with your character or personality. C. TRANSITION…ITEM 2: Reveal item two about another aspect of your life, and proceed as above… D. TRANSITION… ITEM 3: Reveal item three about yet another aspect of your life, and proceed as above…
III. FLASH YOUR QUOTATION on the SCREEN: Conclude your speech with a broader reflection of yourself as represented by the FAMOUS QUOTATION which you will explain and orally cite your source. IV. SUPER conclusion, share with the class how creating this speech has helped you to be a better speaker and perhaps a better person (more confident? more mature? more thoughtful? Etc.) WHAT STEPS SHOULD I TAKE TO BE SUCCESSFUL? ______•Planning form: Complete the attached planning form which will be a sort of “outline” for your speech. You must provide an MLA citation for the source of your quote/saying. It is worth 50 formative OC points, due 10/15-16/14. ______•Prepare your visual aid: Go home tonight and show your parent(s) this assignment. Start to look around for just the right bag and items to use as your visual aids. They need to reflect three different aspects of YOU. YOU MAY NOT USE YOUR SCHOOL BACKPACK or every-‐day purse OR any FAST FOOD bags! ______•Plan your speech: Practice your speech at least 3 times, the day before speeches begin. Practice giving your speech to yourself in the mirror, then to a pet, then to a HUMAN who must sign their name to your planning sheet to prove you practiced. If you do not practice, points will be deducted from your score. The speech is worth 100 summative OC points and is due on 10/22 & 23/14.
