ctv.ca - Police in Saskatchewan will be paying extra attention to distracted drivers in October. Throughout the month, police across the province will be using a variety of tactics to catch distracted drivers in the act, including surveillance from unmarked vehicles and plainclothes officers on the sidewalks. In Regina, police officers will once again ride transit buses to catch distracted drivers as part of Operation Bus Cop. Police will be on the lookout for people using handheld cellphones to talk, text, email or browse online while driving. But police say distracted driving isn’t just lim-ited to using a phone. “Drivers are still not getting the mes-sage. If you are in control of a vehicle, any-thing that takes your attention away from the road is dangerous,” Saskatoon police Supt. Brian Shalovelo said in a Saskatche-wan Government Insurance news release.“If someone says they were picking up a CD on the floor when they lost control, that is distracted driving. Changing the ra-dio station, smoking a cigarette, reading a map or your mail – these are all examples of how a driver can be distracted. We’ve even seen people watching Netflix while

driving.” It is illegal for drivers in Saskatch-ewan to use, view, hold or manipulate a cellphone while driving. That means even if you’re simply holding a cell-phone and not using it, you can still be charged. The penalty for distracted driving is a $280 fine and four demerit points. Drivers caught using their cellphone while driving for the second time with-in one year will have the vehicle they are driving seized for seven days. “The average car or lightweight truck weighs over four thousand pounds,” said Regina Police Chief Evan Bray.“That is two tons of comfort and conve-nience to get you to your destination…or it’s two tons of steel and glass that can take your life, or someone else’s, if you lose control. Is there any text message, photo or music selection in the world that could be more important than a human life?” Experienced drivers can only use a cellphone if it is mounted to their visor or dash, and they use the voice-activat-ed or one-touch functions. Learner and novice drivers are not allowed to use a cellphone of any kind, not even hands-free. “The message is simple: put the phone away and encourage your friends and family to do the same,” said Earl Cameron, executive vice-president of
the SGI Auto Fund. “Put it out of reach in your glove box, zip it up in your purse and put it in the back seat, or mount it on your dash-board and use it hands-free if you’re an experienced driver. We all have a re-sponsibility to make safe choices behind the wheel.”

As a sergeant in a parachute reg-iment I took part in several night time exercises. Once, I was seated next to a Lieutenant fresh from Jump School. He was quiet sad looked a bit pale so I struck up a conversation.
"Scared, Lieutenant?", I asked.
He replied, "No, just a bit apprehen-sive."
I asked, "What's the difference?"
He replied, "That means I'm scared with a university education."
A wife started doing her make up as soon as she woke up.
Her husband asked the reason.
She replied, “I have locked my phone with facial recognition.
And it’s not recognizing me without makeup.”

Fact #1: Americans typically refer to this time of year as “fall,” while the British use the word “autumn.” Both terms date back to the 16th century but before that it was called “harvest.
Fact #2: Fall was called “harvest” because of the “harvest moon” that occurs when the full moon is closest to the autumn equinox. Before man-made lighting, this moonlight was essential to a prosperous harvest.
Fact #3: Weight gain around this time of year may not only be due to comforting fall foods like pumpkin pie and cider, re-searchers have found that lack of vitamin D reduces fat breakdown and triggers fat storage.
Fact #4: According to The Weather Channel, pumpkins are the most craved food during the fall. Although, if you’ve left the house anytime recently, this may not come as a surprise to you.
Fact #5: The yellow and orange colors you see actually always exist in leaves but they are overpowered by the abundance of green from chlorophyll. The amount of chlorophyll starts to decrease as the sun weakens and the days grow shorter.

At the end of a visit to Amsterdam, a friend borrowed an old suitcase from his hosts to carry home his souvenirs. At the airport, however, a customs officer subjected our friend’s luggage to a thorough search and even sent for a drug-sniffing dog. Sure enough, the dog entered the area, headed straight for the borrowed bag and went into a frenzy. The customs officer now intensified his search, but ultimately he found nothing. After arriving home, the young man immediately phoned his hosts and told them how puzzled he’d been by the dog’s behavior. “Perhaps,” the owner of the suitcase said, “it was because that’s the bag our cat usually sleeps in.”
