family has strong ties to the area.“This is the old stomping grounds

for my whole family,” said Denis. “And I still have roots in Shaunavon.”

Those connections include numer-ous cousins still living in the area, tied to families with last names that include Goulet, Dufresne, Smith and Malone.

“It’s going to be good to see all those guys again,” smiled Dufresne, who grew up in Medicine Hat after his parents moved from the Southwest to Alberta but still returned to the community on many occasions.

Denis, who started performing professionally as a fiddle player at just 10 years of age, even has a fond memory of one of his first paying jobs almost 30 years ago in Shaunavon.

“One of my first shows was at a Shaunavon gig,” laughed Denis. “I was paid a mickey of lemon gin, which I sold to my dad for $20.”

Denis’ dad was Gerry Dufresne, who himself was an accomplished musician, while his grandfather Albert Dufresne was another well known area resident.

From his rather humble begin-nings, Denis has gone on to carve out an impressive professional career which has now stretched almost three decades.

Along with working in a variety of his own bands, including Ghostboy which he formed a couple of years ago with bandmate and friend Aaron Young, Denis has also worked as a recording session player and toured with acts that have ranged from Gord Bamford and George Canyon to Dierks Bentley and Johnny Reid.

In fact Young and Dufresne, came up with the name Ghostboy because

of their experience playing for big acts.

The unknown heroes behind some of the most popular acts could be considered a Ghostboy, explained Denis.

Young and Dufresne fit that bill perfectly.

Denis and Aaron (who are both multiple award winning session and live players) met at 19 years old and had toured the world before the age of 22. By the time they reached had 25, they had been played on every PBS station, had appeared in documentaries and were part of “The Hottest Fiddle Show in the World” as dubbed by the Walt Disney Corporation.

The two moved on to explore other musical passions. Aaron became a sought after guitarist and vocalist in the jazz communi-ty in Canada and Denis became a sought after player in the country music genre garnering him five CCMA awards for Instrumentalist of the Year.

Back together again now, they are putting their superb playing, vocals and songwriting abilities together as Ghostboy.

Denis and Aaron just finished recording a new album and their current tour is in support of that project. The group has about 30 shows booked on its current tour, although they will take a break from touring in mid November before resuming back up next spring.

“Aaron is also from Prince Albert,” said Denis. “So it’s been kind of a homecoming for both of us. It’s been a lot of fun.”

As country as The Eagles and as rock as Blue Rodeo, the full band (Bass, Drums, Guitar, Fiddle and Mandolin) has been receiving rousing ovations wherever they play.

“We play original music and coun-try covers that everyone will know, but Ghostboy style,” said Denis.

To get a sample of the kind of music they play visit the group’s website at ghostboymusic.com

Denis and Aaron will be joined on stage in Shaunavon by Craig Bignell, a gifted singer, percussionist and

banjo player.Craig was also on stage several

years ago when Denis last performed in Shaunavon as a member of the band Pear. That show was also part of a Shaunavon Arts Council concert series.

“I’m really looking forward to being back in Shaunavon,” said Denis. “Hopefully, we have a good home-town crowd. I really want to put on an extra special show for them and I think people will really enjoy our music.”

Ghostboy has been described as putting on a high energy acoustic powerhouse stage show, with world class songwriting, vocal harmonies and expert musicianship. People quite often leave their performances claiming it’s the best live music they’ve ever heard.

They are seasoned veterans in the live music touring establishment who know how to cater to a crowd, keep the volume low, be personable and engage an audience.

Tickets for Friday’s concert are available in advance at the Grand Coteau Heritage & Cultural Centre and Affinity Credit Union, or online at www.ticketpro.ca. Tickets will also be available at the door on the night of the concert.

9 things you didn’t know about halloween in Canada

There’s more to Halloween than candy and gloppy face paint. Here are the stories be-hind some of the traditions and myths.

1. Celtic harvest - An ancient Celtic festival planted the seed for what we now call Halloween. The Celts celebrated the end of the harvest and the start of the long winter with a festival, called Samhain. The festival was celebrated on Oct. 31, the day the Celts believed the boundary between the living and the dead was at its weakest.

2. Bobbing for apples - After the Romans took over Celtic land in AD 43 a few new traditions were tacked onto the Celtic celebration. One such celebration honoured the Roman goddess Pomona, the goddess of fruit and trees. The symbol for Pomona — an apple — is seen in present day Halloween celebrations in the tradition of bobbing for apples.

3. Meet Jack, the lantern - The tradition of pumpkin carving began in Ireland with

the legend of Stingy Jack. As the fable goes, Jack made a habit of playing tricks on the devil. Once Jack died, God did not allow him into heaven, nor did the devil allow Jack into hell. Instead he was banished to live in eternal night. For his punishment, the devil gave Jack an ember to light his way. The legend claims Jack placed the ember in a hollowed out turnip, the predecessor for a carved pumpkin.

4. Carving pumpkins - The use of pump-kins as Jack-o’-lanterns didn’t begin until the 1800s. Upon their arrival to the United States, Irish immigrants discovered pump-kins were much easier to carve than turnips.

5. Candy - In October 2011, Canadians spent more than $350 million on candy products. This recent data goes to shows that candy spending on Halloween is second only to spending in December, where Ca-nadians spend more than $450 million on Christmas confections.

6. Wicked wallets - According to a Scotia-bank poll done this year, the average Cana-dian will spend $70 on Halloween — with

15 per cent of Canadians saving in advance for the event.

7. Trick-or-treating - Trick-or-treating originated around AD 1000. During this time Christianity had spread to most Celtic lands and had began taking over most pagan ceremonies. The church designated Nov. 2 as “All Souls Day” — a day dedicated to honouring the dead. On this day, the poor frequented the houses of the wealthy and received soul cakes. In exchange for the cakes, the poor would say a prayer for the homeowner’s deceased relatives.

8. Old Wives’ Tales - In Scotland during the 1900s common folklore had it that if a wom-an ate a concoction made from walnuts, nutmeg and hazelnuts before falling asleep on Halloween night, she would dream of her future husband.

9. Spiders - Spiders are a common symbol on Halloween. But they may not be as evil as popular culture would have you think. Many myths explain that spotting a spider on Halloween is actually a loved one watching over you.
