It promises to be a historic year for the Shaunavon Curling Club. While the community celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2013, members of the local club are gearing up to host what promises to be their biggest event ever - the provincial men’s curling championships. The 2014 SaskTel Tankard will be held in Shaunavon from January 29 to Feb-ruary 2, 2014. “It’s pretty exciting stuff,” said Patsy Bailey, who is co-chairing the event with Barry Sonen. “For curling in Saskatche-wan - it doesn’t get any bigger than the Tankard.”Volunteer committee members have
been working diligently putting their plans together for the monumental event. That hard work will face its first big test this week when organizers officially launch ticket sales for the champion-ships. Tickets will be available to the public starting at 6 p.m. tonight (Friday, Nov. 1) at the curling club. Spectators will have a number of dif-ferent ticket packages to choose from. Event passes - which cover every draw during the five-day event - have been priced at just $80 each. Daily passes, meanwhile, will cost $20 and tickets to a single draw are $10.

Organizers are also offering free admit-tance to anyone 18 years of age and under. “Part of what we are doing here is to pro-mote curling,” explained Bailey. “Hopeful-ly, seeing the provincial championships will encourage young people to get in-volved in the sport.” Officials are also offering a limited num-ber of special “Black Gold” premium tick-ets for the event. Spectators will be offered the opportunity to pick their own seat for some great viewing from the Upper Level of the Crescent Point Wickenheiser Cen-tre where organizers will be setting up a limited number (20) of leather chairs. SHANIA TWAIN, SARAH BURKE AND OTHERS TO AP-PEAR ON CANADIAN STAMPS IN 2014ctv.ca - Famous performers, noted female athletes and Canadian tragedies are among the new illustrations set to adorn Canadian postage stamps in 2014. To coincide with the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, a series of stamps will be issued in February commemorating notable Canadian athletes. They include Saskatchewan curler Sandra Schmirler, who skipped Canada to the first gold medal in women’s curling at the 1998 Winter Games in Naga-no, Japan. Another stamp will honour freestyle-skiing pioneer Sarah Burke of Barrie, Ont., who died in a training accident in Utah in 2012. Figure skater Barbara Ann Scott of Ottawa, who won an Olympic gold medal in 1948 and who died last year, will also be honoured with a stamp.Several country music stars will be featured on a new series of stamps to be issued in July -- Tommy Hunter, k.d. lang, Renee Martel, Hank Snow and Shania Twain. Another stamp will highlight the Komagata Maru, a Japanese steamship carrying 376 people from India which was refused landing rights in Vancou-ver in May 1914. Another stamp will mark the 100th anniversary of Canada’s worst peace-time maritime tragedy, also in May 1914. Just over 1,000 people died when the RMS Empress of Ireland sank in the St. Lawrence River, near Rimouski, Que., after colliding with a Norwegian vessel. Other new stamps will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Royal Ontario Museum, the 75th anniversary of the National Film Board, the return of the CFL to Ottawa and the UNESCO World Heritage Site series. Canada Post’s Black History series will add two stamps in 2014 to recognize two neighbourhoods with significant links to black history -- Africville in Halifax and Hogan’s Alley in Vancouver.
Seems an elderly gentleman had serious hearing problems for a number of years.
He went to the doctor and the doctor was able to have him fitted for a set of hearing aids that
allowed the gentleman to hear 100%. The elderly gentleman went back in a month to the doctor
and the doctor said, “Your hearing is perfect. Your family must be really pleased you can hear again.”To which the gentleman said, “Oh, I haven’t told my family yet. I just sit around and listen to the conversations. I’ve changed my will five times!”

He wasn’t the first goalie to wear one, but on Nov. 1, 1959, Jacques Plante of the Montreal Canadiens broke with 70 years of hockey tradition and became the first professional net-minder to don a goalie mask as a regular part of his uniform. After a shot from Rangers centre Andy Bathgate opens an inch-long gash from Plante’s upper lip into his left nostril, he returns to the ice with seven stitches - and a mask.
• Shaken, and bleeding badly from the cut, Plante was helped from the ice by a pair of teammates, his face buried in a dark-ening towel as the league-prescribed 20-minute goalie injury clock ticked down.• After receiving the stitches, Plante took to his net again to the organ swells of For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow. Crossing the ice to the Habs’ dressing room, he disappeared momentarily before reemerging with a mask he had recently taken to wear-ing during often-injurious team practices.• As the capacity crowd surveyed the novel spectacle, the masked Plante all but slammed the door on the New York players, conceding just a solitary rebound goal late in the third period.• The Canadiens proceeded to post the first win of an ensuing 18-game unbeaten streak. The string of success silenced most goalie-mask skeptics, while prompting several other NHL goaltenders to follow Plante’s lead.• Despite a brief slump later in the season, Plante rebounded to collect his fifth straight Vezina Trophy while backstopping the Canadiens to another first-place regular-season finish and a record fifth consecutive Stanley Cup championship.
This Day in History1959: Plante ushers in masked goalie era

NEW ENFORCEMENT OP-TION TO COLLECT CHILD AND SPOUSAL SUPPORT PAYMENTSgov.ca - The government has in-troduced changes to support the enforcement of child and spou-sal support payments through restrictions on hunting and an-gling licenses. The legislation amends the The Enforcement of Mainte-nance Orders Act, 1997 to allow the Maintenance Enforcement Office to restrict the issuing of hunting and angling licenses to individuals who have failed to make scheduled child or spousal support payments. “These amendments will provide another tool to ensure that individuals who owe child support or spousal support will meet their obligations,” Justice Minister and Attorney General Gordon Wyant said. “These op-tions will only be used after sev-eral notices and warnings have
been given.” The amendments require the Director of the Maintenance Enforcement Office to provide individuals with at least 30 days notice of the intention to restrict their ability to obtain a hunting or angling license. These options will only be used when other en-forcement options aimed at an individual’s financial resources have proven unsuccessful. Existing enforcement options include the garnishing of wages and payments from the federal government, reporting the indi-vidual to a credit bureau, and the possible suspension of driver’s li-censes or passports. Saskatchewan continues to have one of the highest collec-tion rates for overdue support payments in Canada. In the 2012-13 fiscal year, more than 91 per cent of payments due were collected. This resulted in a record setting amount of more than $39 million in collections.
