The biggest celebration in filmmaking returns with the 90th Annual Academy Awards, airing Sunday, March 4, on ABC. Jimmy Kimmel returns to host again this year, in spite of last year’s Best Picture snafu.

Millions of movie lovers and entertainment profes-sionals tune in to the Os-

cars each year, cheering on the year’s achievements in filmmak-ing. The 90th Annual Academy Awards, hosted once more by Jim-my Kimmel (“Jimmy Kimmel Live!”), airs live on ABC on Sun-day, March 4.

Though the 89th Academy Awards ceremony is a whole year gone, no one has forgotten the Best Picture incident, when “La La Land” was mistakenly announced as the winner of the coveted award. The error was quickly cor-rected and “Moonlight” received the Oscar as due, but the blunder is now infamous. The snafu haunts Kimmel to this day — a promo video shows his nightmares and sudden phobia of envelopes.

Nevertheless, ABC Entertain-ment president Channing Dungey has great faith in bringing back Kimmel to host the event for a sec-ond time. “After just one year, we can’t imagine anyone else hosting the Oscars,” he said in a state-ment. “Jimmy’s skillful command of the stage is invaluable on a night when anything can happen — and does.”

This year, “The Shape of Wa-ter” leads the pack with 13 nomi-nations: Best Director (Guillermo del Toro), Best Cinematography (Dan Laustsen), Best Lead Actress (Sally Hawkins), Best Supporting Actress (Olivia Spencer) and Best Supporting Actor (Richard Jen-kins). It’s also competing with “Dunkirk,” “Lady Bird,” “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Mis-souri,” “Call Me by Your Name,” “Darkest Hour,” “Phantom Thread,” “The Post” and “Get Out” for Best Picture.

The second out of the gate is “Dunkirk.” It’s up for awards in di-recting (Christopher Nolan), pro-duction design and sound editing, among others. Nolan is competing with Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Phantom Thread,” Greta Ger-wig’s “Lady Bird” and Jordan Peele’s “Get Out” for Best Director. Peele is the fifth black director nominated for the award, and Ger-wig is the fifth woman.

“Dunkirk” is also going up against “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” for Best Original Score. It won’t be an easy win against John Williams, who scored

“The Last Jedi” — the composer could fill an orchestra pit with the awards he’s won.

Netflix has already made Acad-emy Award history as the first streaming service to land eight nominations, including four for its feature film “Mudbound.” Mary J. Blige has gotten a nod for her per-formance as an actress in a sup-porting role. She’s up against Lau-rie Metcalf in “Lady Bird,” Leslie Manville in “Phantom Thread” and Allison Janney in “I, Tonya.”

“Mudbound” also shares an-other milestone: the first nomina-tion of a woman for achievement in cinematography for Rachel Mor-rison, who’s up against “Darkest Hour,” “Dunkirk,” “The Shape of Water” and “Blade Runner 2049.” Though Netflix has yet to com-pletely win over the Academy with the Best Picture nomination (like Amazon’s nomination for “Man-

“Three Billboards Outside Ebb-ing, Missouri” got seven nods, in-cluding one for leading actress Frances McDormand. Her biggest competition is Saoirse Ronan for “Lady Bird.” “Three Billboards” also garnered a double nomina-tion for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell. Willem Dafoe joins them for the supporting actor nomina-tion for his role in “The Florida Project.” “Three Billboards” is also competing with “Lady Bird” for Best Original Screenplay, along with “The Big Sick,” “Get Out” and “The Shape of Water.”

Denzel Washington has another nomination this year for his lead-ing role in “Roman J. Israel, Esq.”

He’s going head to head with Gary Oldman for “Darkest Hour,” Daniel Kaluuya in “Get Out,” Timothée Chalamet in “Call Me by Your Name” and Daniel Day-Lewis in “Phantom Thread.”

The host joked that there were some snubs he didn’t agree with, citing “Wonder Woman” as a prime example while venting on his show, “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” He also thought Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks should have been nominated for “The Post,” but the two nods the film did receive are certainly nothing to sneeze at.

In reality, Kimmel seems surpris-ingly calm about his hosting gig, despite what the promo implies about his lingering fear of enve-lopes. With the fallout from the re-cent Harvey Weinstein scandal, we can expect the air to be rife with tension, and for there to be a few speeches on the subject.

Of course, audiences should ex-pect the long-standing gag be-tween Kimmel and Matt Damon (“The Martian,” 2015) to continue. Though it might be getting a little old at this point, Kimmel will (hopefully) trim the bit this year and give poor Damon a break from his chirping.

It will also be interesting to see if Kimmel delivers food to the audi-ence this year, which is quickly be-coming a tradition. The first time, the emcee fed the crowd peanut butter and jelly sandwiches; the second round included parachutes of candy, cookies and doughnuts floating from the ceiling. What culi-nary display he comes up with this year remains to be seen, or he may drop the nibbles all together.

Back to school: Look out ‘80s kids, and even ‘80s kids at heart. A new trio of Heathers has arrived for a new generation, and these ones are just as mean as the old batch was.

The 1989 black comedy “Heath-ers,” starring Winona Ryder (“Stranger Things”) and Christian Slater (“Mr. Robot”), was a bleakly humorous look at the lives of teen-agers in a high shool run by a clique of popular girls, all but one of whom were named Heather. Talks of a sequel, reboot or TV ad-aptation of the cult classic have been swirling around for years, and those rumors have finally come to fruition.

“Heathers” premieres on Para-mount Network on Wednesday, March 7, with a modern take on the story of a pair of disillusioned teenagers killing their peers and making the murders look like sui-cides. For this TV adaptation, “Un-der the Dome’s” Grace Victoria Cox stars as Veronica, the only member of the Heathers not named, well, Heather, the role that was played by Ryder in the original film. James Scully (“Quantico”) has the role of her bad-boy boyfriend JD, originally played by Slater.

It’s with the three Heathers themselves that the new series re-

ally diverges from the source ma-terial. Here, the three teenagers are examples of a time that’s more accepting of diversity than the 1989 of the film. The ruling posse is itself ruled by Heather Chandler (Melanie Field, “The Tap”), a plus-sized girl who’s backed up by gen-der queer Heather Duke (Brendan Scannell, “Kill Game,” 2017) and black student Heather McNamara (Jasmine Mathews, “Blue Bloods”) — a huge change from the three white, thin and blond Heathers of the original.

These aren’t the same old Heathers and this isn’t the same old “Heathers.” The new black comedy premieres Wednesday, March 7, on Paramount Network.

Big little casting: What’s a

show to do when its first season was already so stellar and so criti-cally acclaimed that it earned an incredible 16 Emmy nominations and won eight of them? How can that sort of momentum possibly be maintained? Well, casting a multiple Academy Award winner is definitely one way to keep up the buzz.

Acclaimed actress Meryl Streep (“The Post,” 2017) has joined the cast of HBO’s “Big Little Lies” for its second season, adding further star power to a series that wasn’t exactly lacking it. The series, which is based on a book of the same

name by Liane Moriarty, was origi-nally intended as a one-off minise-ries, so it’s not surprising that pro-duction on a second season is still in its early stages, with no plans for a premiere any time this year.

Nicole Kidman (“Moulin Rouge!,” 2001) and Reese Wither-spoon (“Legally Blonde,” 2001) are also confirmed to be returning for the second season, and it’s a good bet that the other leading la-dies — Laura Dern (“Jurassic Park,” 1993), Zoë Kravitz (“Mad Max: Fury Road,” 2015) and Shailene Woodley (“Divergent,” 2014) — will be, too.

Streep will play Perry’s (Alexan-der Skarsgård, “True Blood”) mother, who comes to town to help look after her grandchildren following her son’s untimely death in the first season — a presence that isn’t exactly welcome, espe-cially when she starts looking into the circumstances surrounding Perry’s demise and asking a few too many questions.

“Big Little Lies” was one of 2017’s most acclaimed series, and its second season will have even more star power than its first. No premiere date is yet attached for the return of the HBO drama.

The ‘Babies’ are back: A be-

loved children’s cartoon is return-ing after more than 25 years off the air, and fans both old and new don’t have to wait very long for it. Disney Junior has brought back “Muppet Babies,” with a planned

premiere date sometime this month.

The original cartoon, which fea-tured Jim Henson’s famous Mup-pets as toddlers growing up togeth-er in a nursery, ran from 1984 to 1991 and charmed audiences with its childlike innocence and humor.

The new series follows a similar premise, but uses CGI animation and includes an all-new muppet created especially for the series: a penguin with an artistic flair named Summer, who’s voiced by accomplished voice actress Jessica DiCicco (“The Loud House”).

Of course, fans of the older Em-my-winning series will remember the tykes’ caretaker, Miss Nanny. In keeping with tradition, Miss Nan-ny is only ever shown from the tor-so down, and for the reboot, Jenny Slate (“Zootopia,” 2016), a life-long Muppets fan, has been cast to be her voice. Dee Bradley Baker (“Phineas and Ferb”), Eric Bauza (“Transformers: Robots in Dis-guise”), Melanie Harrison (“Fish Hooks”) and Matt Danner (“John-ny Test”) also lend their vocal tal-ents as pint-sized versions of the classic muppets.

The original “Muppet Babies” was a critical darling and much loved by children and adults alike, and time will tell if its predecessor attracts as much love.

Q: Do you have to pay any fees to be on “America’s Next Top Model”?

A: Not only do you not have to pay a fee to apply, depending how far you get in the process, they ac-tually start paying you (a little).

The audition process is divided into preliminary, semifinal and fi-nal rounds (note that this is before the show even begins). There’s no fee to enter, and if you make it to the final round, the show pays to fly you to Los Angeles for the final interview and gives you a daily cash allowance while you’re there.

CW has put all of the applica-tion instructions and eligibility re-quirements up on its website for all to see, and they make applying surprisingly easy — you don’t even have to leave your house. You can do it all by mail by send-ing in an application form along with photos of yourself, copies of your ID, and a three-minute video.

Q: Will there ever be anoth-

er “Gunsmoke” with different actors playing the part of Matt, Kitty and the rest?

A: If you’d asked me this a cou-ple of years ago, I’d have said al-most certainly yes, but now I’m not so sure.

There was a lot of buzz about a “Gunsmoke” remake back in 2009-2010. At the time, CBS had officially announced an intention to remake it, hired a screenwriter to produce a script (Gregory Poiri-er, one of the gang of writers be-hind the 2007 smash “National Treasure: Book of Secrets”) and even “tossed about” a couple of big names as stars.

The L.A. Times reported that big-screen superstars Brad Pitt and Ryan Reynolds would star, presumably as Matt Dillon and Doc Adams.

However, the talk ended shortly afterward, meaning either the script wasn’t right or they couldn’t line up the right stars (which seems less likely for such a high-profile show). Not a word has been said about it since.

That’s a bad sign for two rea-sons. First, TV has since rebooted just about every other old proper-ty it could think of, CBS in particu-lar (it would be impossible to list

them all here, but a small selection would include “Hawaii Five-0,” “MacGyver,” and the network’s upcoming reboots of “Magnum P.I.” and “Cagney & Lacey”). The fact that “Gunsmoke” hasn’t been on that list yet suggests maybe the network can’t find a way to make it work.

Secondly, and related to the first point, we may have reached peak reboot. The upcoming fall season is full of them (not just the ones I’ve already mentioned), and critics and fans alike are starting to get a little tired.

The Chicago Tribune’s Nina Metz called it an “avalanche,” and suggested the reboot trend needs to go because it’s squeez-ing out new voices.

Q: The end scene in “The

Goonies” talks about an octo-pus attack, but I’ve seen it a dozen times and there’s no octopus.

A: The octopus attack was cut from the 1985 adventure classic “The Goonies,” but as you point out, it wasn’t cut entirely.

What remains is a quick refer-ence to the scene by one of the characters, but the scene itself was cut. This would seem like a mistake on the part of the film-makers, and technically it was, but star Sean Astin argues that it re-flects a particular approach to filmmaking that is part of the movie’s charm and makes it im-possible to reproduce.

“No one would let a big-bud-get studio movie go through now with that level of playfulness-cum-inattentiveness.” During a talk at New York’s BoroughCon 2017 convention, Astin pointed to all sorts of mistakes that made it into the final cut of the film (for example, at one point his charac-ter refers to Josh Brolin’s character as Josh).

But he argues that keeping the octopus scene would have been a bigger mistake. “The octopus just ... always sucked.”

He’s right, too. A viewing of the deleted scene (easily found on the internet) reveals special effects that were bad, even by that cheesy film’s standards. Gas Monkey no more: “The Bearded Wonder” Aaron Kaufman is finally on his own and the future is bright. The former “Fast N’ Loud” star, along with a group of sea-soned experts, is building, driving and testing custom cars in the harshest of conditions in the new series “Shifting Gears,” premiering Monday, March 5, on Discovery.

After parting ways with Richard Rawlings and the Gas Monkey Ga-rage featured in Discovery’s “Fast N’ Loud” in 2016, Kaufman is now out on his own. The master builder’s first act of business as a solo opera-tor was opening his own shop, the Arclight Fabrication in Dallas, Texas, specializing in F-Series trucks.

Kaufman originally vowed to stay away from television, express-ing, “Initially when I walked away from ‘Fast N’ Loud’ I was ready to close the door, and having enjoyed

that chapter — chapter written, chapter closed — move on to something else.” However, he was eventually persuaded to return to the small screen and showcase his new shop.

As the boss, Kaufman has as-sembled a veritable A-Team of builders who share the same pas-sion, curiosity and creativity as he does. Josh Freeman, Jonathan Ro-driquez, Jason Bowman, Jeremy Webster and Jonathan Mansour have been hand-picked to make the Arclight the best shop in the coun-try. Each of the builders brings a specific skill and expertise to the shop, and relishes the opportunity to test his craftsmanship.

“Shifting Gears” meets with fel-low builders and experts, while ex-ploring different types of car culture through custom designs. Kaufman plans to tackle builds and projects that he’s always dreamed of, all while working in spaces he’s never worked in.
