In the past few days, hundreds of thousands of Christians and men and women of good will traveled to Washington to

witness to the dignity of each and every human being as created in the image and likeness of God. Along with the

March for Life come many other events, increasingly focused on younger people. The annual Vigil for Life the evening

before the March is jammed with high school and college-aged men and women. As the signs say, we truly are witness-

ing the growth of the “Pro-Life Generation.” Studies are showing that more and more young people are opposed to

abortion, at least in most circumstances. Slowly but surely the tide is turning. But there is still much to do. We must

remain vigilant to block any new attempts to violate the dignity of the human person while at the same time working to

push back on current laws and policies that do so.

What do we do? First, as always, prayer! Please join me this Monday, January 22, at 2pm in the chapel for a Holy Hour

and Rosary for Life, concluding with benediction shortly before 3pm. Second, knowledge. We need to know what is

really going on. Don’t trust the propaganda of advocacy groups. Know who and what is behind the many efforts to

change laws. While abortion is and always will be a pivotal issue in terms of protecting human life, the creeping danger

of legalized assisted suicide and euthanasia is always there. We have been successful so far in New York at blocking

new laws but we must remain aware and alert. Please visit the website of the New York State Catholic Conference

(http://www.nyscatholic.org/) for a lot of good information about current issues and Catholic teaching. Third, we need

to take action. We have the right as citizens to express our views to our elected officials by letter, phone, email, visits,

demonstrations—and at the ballot box! The NYS Catholic Conference has easy to follow ways to take action on their

website!

The issue of sexual harassment has been in the news over the past several months—and rightly so. What this issue

shows, among many things, is that contrary to what many people think or have been taught, there is no such thing as sex-

uality detached from morality. The separation of the physical from the emotional and spiritual is a root cause if the crisis

we see in Hollywood, politics, and elsewhere. 50 years ago, in his prophetic encyclical Humanae V itae, Paul VI warned

us of the consequences of separating the unitive and procreative capacities of human sexuality. I don’t think Paul VI

could have envisioned the degree to which we have gone over these five decades.

In last week’s second reading, Saint Paul talked about respecting our bodies at the temple of the Holy Spirit. He said we

were bought at a great price (The Cross) and so we should live dignified lives in recognition of that fact. Paul Loverde,

Emeritus Bishop of Arlington, wrote an excellent pastoral letter on the dangers of pornography, an epidemic that effects

so many men and women, young and old. As a violation of human dignity itself, pornography is very often a gateway

into other violations as well. I encourage each of you to read this letter, entitled “Bought with a Price.” It can be found

online (https://www.arlingtondiocese.org/documents/bought-with-a-price-anti-pornography-letter/).

www.arlingtondiocese.org/documents/bought-with-a-price-anti-pornography-letter/ ).

THE CALL OF JESUS

“Call” is the keyword…. The idea, simple but very meaningful, is absolutely fundamental to our temporal and spiritual

plans. Human beings cannot attain fulfillment solely by carrying out their own projects. These projects are legitimate

and necessary, and we must bring our intelligence and energy to bear on accomplishing them. But that’s not enough, and

in the event of failure it can lead to disillusionment. Another attitude, one in the end more decisive and fruitful, must

accompany our initiating and carrying out of projects: that of listening to the calls, the discrete, mysterious invitations

that come to us continuously throughout life. This attitude of listening and availability takes priority over even the pro-

jects themselves.

I believe we can be fulfilled as human beings only to the extent that we perceive and respond to the calls life addresses

to us day in and day out: calls to change, grow, mature, enlarge our hearts and our horizons, and leave behind hardness

of heart and narrow-mindedness in order to welcome reality in a larger and more confident manner.

These calls come to us in many ways. Sometimes they come through experiences or by the example of others who touch

us, sometimes from desires that arise in our hearts or requests from people who are close to us, often from Holy Scrip-

ture. They originate from God, who gives us life, never ceases to watch over us, and wants tenderly to lead and constant-

ly intervene for each of his children in a way that is discreet, often imperceptible, yet efficacious. Although many are,

unfortunately, unaware of this presence and action of God, they reveal themselves to those who know how to place

themselves in the attitude of listening and availability.

God is the God of the living, not the dead. He reaches out to us continually, mysteriously but certainly, infusing our lives

with value, beauty, and fruitfulness beyond our imagining.

director.

THE SEED AS MOTION OF LOVE

What a consolation it is to consider the secret method by which the Holy Spirit pours into our hearts the first rays and

feelings of his light and vital heat! O Jesus! how delightful a pleasure it is to see celestial love, which is the sun of vir-

tues, as little by little with a progress which insensibly becomes sensible, it displays its light upon a soul, and stops not

till it has it all covered with the splendor of its presence, giving it at last the perfect beauty of love’s day! O how cheerful,

beautiful, sweet, and agreeable, this daybreak is!

Nevertheless true it is that break of day is either not day, or if it be day, it is but a beginning day, a rising of the day, and

rather the infancy of the day than the day itself. In like manner without doubt these motions of love which forerun the act

of faith required for our justification are either not love properly speaking, or but a beginning and imperfect love. They

are the first verdant buds which the soul, warmed with the heavenly sun, begins, as a mystical tree, to put forth in spring-

time, rather presages of fruit than fruit itself….

When God gives us faith he enters into our soul and speaks to our spirit, not by manner of discourse, but by way of inspi-

ration, proposing in so sweet a manner unto the understanding that which ought to be believed, that the will receives

therefrom a great complacency, so great indeed that it moves the understanding to consent and yield to truth without any

doubt or distrust, and here lies the marvel: for God proposes the mysteries of faith to our souls amidst obscurities and

darkness, in such sort that we do not see the truths but we only half-see them.

It is like what happens sometimes when the face of the earth is covered with mist so that we cannot see the sun, but only

see a little more brightness in the direction where he is. Then, as one would say, we see it without seeing it; because on

the one hand we see it not so well that we can truly say we see it, yet again we see it not so little that we can say we do

not see it; and this is what we call half-seeing. And yet, when this obscure light of faith has entered our spirit, not by

force of reasoning or show of argument, but solely by the sweetness of its presence, it makes the understanding believe

and obey it with so much authority that the certitude it gives us of the truth surpasses all other certitudes, and keeps the

understanding and all its workings in such subjection that they get no hearing in comparison with it.

SAINT FRANCIS DE SALES (+1622) was a great figure of the 17th century rebirth of Catholic mystical life. He is a Doctor

of the Church.

Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children

When we fail to acknowledge as part of reality the worth of a poor person, a human embryo, a person with disabilities—

to offer just a few examples—it becomes difficult to hear the cry of nature itself; everything is connected. Once the

human being declares independence from reality and behaves with absolute dominion, the very foundations of our life

begin to crumble, for “instead of carrying out his role as a cooperator with God in the work of creation, man sets himself

up in place of God and thus ends up provoking a rebellion on the part of nature” (Pope John Paul II, Encyclical Letter

Centesimus Annus, May 1, 1991)….

When the human person is considered as simply one being among others, the product of chance or physical determinism,

then “our overall sense of responsibility wanes” (Pope Benedict XVI, Message for the 2010 World Day of Peace)….

Human beings cannot be expected to feel responsibility for the world unless, at the same time, their unique capacities of

knowledge, will, freedom, and responsibility are recognized and valued….

Since everything is interrelated, concern for the protection of nature is also incompatible with the justification of abor-

tion. How can we genuinely teach the importance of concern for other vulnerable beings, however troublesome or incon-

venient they may be, if we fail to protect a human embryo, even when its presence is uncomfortable and creates difficul-

ties? “If personal and social sensitivity toward the acceptance of the new life is lost, then other forms of acceptance that

are valuable for society also wither away” (Pope Benedict XVI, Encyclical Letter Caritas in Veritate, June 29, 2009).

We need to develop a new synthesis capable of overcoming the false arguments of recent centuries.

Bulletin Reflection

There is a certain urgency in today’s Gospel as Jesus calls

His first disciples Andrew and Simon, James and John.

Each one follows Jesus immediately, unhesitatingly

abandoning father and fellow - workers, nets and boat. To

what is Jesus calling me - at this moment, in these

circumstances? What will I need to abandon in order to

follow Him?

Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who

work in parish-based advocacy groups to bring Gospel values

and Catholic social teaching to the wider community.

Vocation Prayer

Merciful Father, you sent your Son into the world to free us from the power of sin and evil. Grant that, through the intercession of

the Virgin Mary, our Mother of Mercy, many young men will respond to your call to give of themselves in imitation of Christ the Redeemer. Fill them with the light of your Holy Spirit that they may renounce the power of the world, proclaim truth and freedom, and bring consolation and relief to oppressed Chris-tians. Bless our family of Mercy with numerous holy priests and brothers who will offer our world the testimony of your faith and love. We ask this through Christ our Lord. AMEN

TERCER DOMINGO ORDINARIO

cercano.

THANK YOU to everyone who has donated to my medical fund thus far. I found out my initial campaign (not run by me) has been shut down for an unknown reason. The first campaign helped cover my household bills from missed work, as well as smaller hospital bills. This new campaign is set up in hopes of paying back some of the $90k+ I owe as of now. (This is only one of the two surgeries I have had so far.) It is very possible I will have to claim bankruptcy if I can-not make a good dent. That is a very frightening thought as a single parent. For those of you who either have donated already, or cannot afford to, please do not feel obligated. I ask for prayers for myself and for my family. It has been a very rough couple of months. The new link is www.gofundme.com/lishanson. You can also leave donations at the Parish Center. Every little bit helps, and has helped. God bless and thank you so much. St. Martha’s has been incredible with your generosity.

Dear Lord, As my life declines and my energies decrease,

more than ever hold me by

Your Power, that I may not offend You, but daily increase in Your Love.

Give me strength to work in Your Service till the last day of my life.

Help me to ever have an increasing dread of venial sin,

or whatever would cause the

slightest withdrawal of Your Love; all day long,

and at night keep me close to Your Heart; and should I die, ere the morning breaks,

may I go rejoicing

in that vision of Your entrancing beauty, never to be separated from You. Amen.
