G e n e r a l Goolof iy: C a r d i f f T o w s h i p i s u n d e r l a i n by G r e n v i l l e metased iments i n t r u d e d and r e p l a c e d by m a f i c and f e l s i c p l u t o n i c r o c k s . The t o w n s h i p can be d i v i d e d i n t o two p a r t s o f c o n t r a s t i n g raetamorphic g r a d e . The h i g h l y metanmrphosed H a s t i n g s H i g h l a n d G n e i s s Complex o c c u p i e s the p a r t o f the t o w n s h i p n o r t h o f Che f a u l t zone n e a r Highway 28. M a r b l e , p a r a g n e i s s and a m p h i b o l i t e a r e c u t by s m a l l maf ic i n t r u s i o n s n e a r Monck, Paudash and C e n t r e L a k e s . The metased iments and g a b b r o were i n t r u d e d and r e p l a c e d by n e p h e l i n e s y e n i t e e a r l y i n Che G r e n v i l l e o r o g e n y . S y e n i t e was i n t r u d e d n e a r D e e r Lake and g n e i s s e s were s y o n i C i z e d on the f l a n k s of the p l u t o n i c c e n t r e s . Ehiriiig and a f t e r t h i s L i m e , the two l a r g e g r a n i t i c b o d i e s were i n t r u d e d , accompanied by e x t e n s i v e g r a n l t i z a t l o n , f o r m a t i o n o f p e g m a t i t e s and s t r o n g s t r u c t u r a l d e f o r m a t i o n .

The H a s t i n g s B a s i n to the south o f the f a u l t zone i s not a s h i g h l y metamorphosed. I t c o n s i s t s o f sed iments ef the Dungannor F o r m a t i o n ( m a r b l e and f e a t h e r a m p h i b o l i t e ) and the Hermon Format ion ( p e l i t i c s c h i s t s and g n e i s s e s , p a r a g n e i s s , a m p h i b o l i t e , a r k o s e and q u a r t z i t e ) , which have been i n t r u d e d by s m a l l b o d i e s of g a b b r o and d i o r i t e (many of l A i c h have been a l t e r e d to a r . p h i b o l l t e ) , a g r a n i t i c i n t r u s i o n and s n a i l g r a n i t i c p e g m a t i t e d i k e s . The B a s i n was f o l d e d d u r i n g o r a f t e r the G r e n v i l l e o r o g e n y .

E r o s i o n r e d u c e d the a r e a to a p e n e p l a i n a f t e r the l a s t P r e e a m b r i a n mounta in b u i l d i n g . T h i n P l e i s t o c e n e g l a c i a l d e p o s i t s c o v e r much o f the b e d r o c k ( H e w i t t 1 9 5 7 ) .

Economic C e o l o a y : L i m i t e d p r o d u c t i o n of g r a p h i t e ( d i s s e m i n a t e d f l a k e s in p a r a g n e i s s and m a r b l e ) , molybdenum (m.alnly i n p e g m a t i t e s ) and f l u o r l t e ( i n c a l c i t e - f l u o r i t e - a p a t i t e v e i n s ) b e g a n a b o u t 1910. Cranium was f i r s t d i s c o v e r e d i n the a r e a by W . M . R i c h a r d s o n i n 1922. T h e r e were some e a r l y a t t e m p t s t o produce r a d i u m , but i t was not u n t i l 1953 when C e n t r e Lake Uranium Mines L t d . began u n d e r g r o u n d deve lopment t h a t the a r e a became a c e n t r e o f m a j o r p r o s p e c t i n g a c t i v i t y f o r u r a n i u m . S e v e r a l p r o p e r t i e s were opened in the mid-1950 '5 and two mines o p e r a t e d c o m m e r c i a l l y : B i c r o f t Uranium Mines L t d . ( s u c c e s s o r t o C e n t r e L a k e ) 1956-1963, and C a n a d i a n Dyno Mines L t d . 1958-1960. Renewed a c t i v i t y in the a r e a has been s t i m u l a t e d by Che p r o j e c t e d needs of n u c l e a r r e a c t o r s now b e i n g p l a n n e d . Many u r a n i v m d e p o s i t s o c c u r i n complex p e g m a t i t i c g r a n i t e d i k e s ; o t h e r o c c u r r e n c e s a r e metasomacic r e p l a c e m e n t d e p o s i t s and h y d r o t h e n n a l c a l c i c e - i l u o r i C e -a p a t i t e v e i n s .
