November Is a Month to

Be Thankful

By Christopher Lane

With Veterans Day and Thanksgiving both celebrated in November, it’s certainly a month to pause in gratitude and thankful-ness for our many blessings, even as we may face any number of potential hard-ships.

While homelessness and hunger are still major poverty concerns in both Greenville and throughout our country, most of us are fortunate to have safe shelter and enough to eat.

As competition continues to be fierce for various career positions and many still seek a satisfying job, unemployment has been decreasing and the majority of us who wish to work are doing so.

Crime has and always will exist every-where in our country, but most of us live freely and in relative safety.

While health concerns affect all of us at one time or another, most of us are reason-ably healthy...though perhaps we could do a little better job of taking care of our-selves.

Veterans Day is a time to be grateful for the service and sacrifice of the men and

women of our armed forces, who have protected and defended the freedoms we enjoy, as well as the freedoms and rights of our friends and allies around the world. Despite our political divisiveness, we are thankful to live in a country that defends our right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, as opposed to countries whose leaders willingly choose policies of op-pression.

Thanksgiving Day gives us a chance to further express our gratitude for peaceful times, for our everyday abundances and for the precious company of our loved ones, past and present.

Remembering to be thankful, not only on these two holidays, but throughout the year, is important. It helps us keep things in perspective and to gather strength to deal with those difficult times that we all experience from time to time. It allows us to reflect on what freedom and abundance really means and what counts as being truly meaningful in our lives. Living a thankful life is a choice…and an oppor-tunity to count our blessings. It may not always be easy, but the efforts are usually rewarded.

On behalf of the staff at the Community

Connector, we offer our sincerest grati-

tude to our veterans…and we wish all of

you a very happy Thanksgiving holiday!

Be an AWESOME Homeowner

Whether you only recently took that great life leap and purchased your first home, or are an old pro, it never hurts to do a check to make sure are you being the best homeowner you can be. Follow these tips and you could prevent expensive problems and increase the value of your home throughout the years of your homeownership. And wouldn’t that be awe-some?

Home, awesome home

Even if you are a brand new homeowner, you’ve probably already come up against some maintenance issues. Maintaining your home could mean frequent and multiple trips to the big box stores for hand tools, power tools, appliances, lawn equipment and supplies, cleaning supplies, light bulbs—well—you name it. Start a list to keep from overbuying, try to consolidate your trips, and give everything its “place” once you get home, to stay organized and keep it all together when homeowner duty calls.

Regular maintenance honey-dos include: Cleaning the gutters, checking exposed wiring for wear or damage, scheduling a furnace checkup twice a year to prevent expensive problems, changing furnace filters, checking caulking for decay, checking the foundation for cracks or crumbling, and checking the roof for damage or overhanging limbs

And homeowner beware: Peeling paint or rotting siding can lead to water damage and mold growth—which are expensive to repair and remedy. Take care of it when you see it. This calls for a professional.

It’s important to prioritize your home projects vs. maintenance. You’re going to want to replace that old, inefficient HVAC before you replace the bedroom carpet (although you may have a debate in your house about which would be more fun, and I think we know the answer to that).

Don’t try to save money by making improvements, repairs and going all DIY if you really are clueless. You wouldn’t work on your car unless you knew what you were doing, so give your home the same

consideration. For example, it’s okay to try your hand at painting, but don’t start wondering if you could use that exposed wire to install an overhead chandelier. Playing with electricity is not advisable. Also, if your water and sewer pipes are past their prime (or approaching retire-ment age) it’s a good idea to hire a professional to do an inspection and replace where needed. So, ask for references, look online, and find the most awesome professionals available to do work you don’t know how to do. There’s no shame in it.

Money matters

It’s good to keep an emergency fund, too, for unexpected, necessary re-pairs not covered by insurance. A reserve fund helps ensure you can make payments in the unfortunate event of a layoff, illness, etc. Money and finance experts recommend building a reserve fund of three to six months of living expenses. In the event of unexpected financial difficulty you can’t cover, the best thing to do is go ahead and contact your lender for options and solutions.

And, even though you want to make your home as awesome as possible, hold back on the massive spending spree you would need to do every-thing all at once. Think about buying furniture room by room instead of for the whole house at once. Keep in mind that you may really, really want a new kitchen, but if it’s functional, it could be a good idea to get your financial house in order first if you have your doubts.

And at tax time, even if you normally do your returns yourself, hire an accountant to make sure you complete your return correctly at least for the first year as a homeowner, and maximize that refund. Home owner-ship significantly changes most people’s tax situations and the deductions you can claim. Just getting your taxes professionally done for one year can give you a template to use in future years if you want to continue doing your taxes yourself.

Homeownership? Yeah, you got this. Chances are good you were already a pretty good homeowner, but hopefully these tips will keep you on the path of homeowner awesomeness.

Your Local Realtor,

Susan McMillen

Why Do You Need to Call a Lawyer?

For the same reason you call:

the exterminator, he can spray strong poison without contaminating himself or you, just as a lawyer can say or write strong words against the other side without hurting you in the process;

the dentist, he can pull out that painful, infected tooth without causing more damage to the other teeth, just as a law-yer can solve your main legal problem without causing you additional, painful problems;

the plumber, he can get the toilet to flush again without your having to get your hands dirty, just as a lawyer can deal with the legal-manure without your having to get dirty;

the car mechanic, he can get your auto-mobile running smoothly so you can get places, just as a lawyer can get your legal-life running smoothly so you can accomplish your goals;

a doctor, she can prescribe the proper remedy for your illness, just as a lawyer can advise the proper remedy for a legal problem;

a minister, he helps you deal with life’s tragedies, just as a lawyer helps you deal with many of the same tragedies.

Just as it is a bad idea to try to cut out your own appendix, or perform some other sur-gery on yourself, so it is a bad idea to try to advise yourself on your legal rights and responsibilities. Just as medical science, computer science, international trade, and other fields grow more and more complex every day, so does the law. As long as legislators, judges, bureaucrats, and other rule-makers live and breathe, our legal system will grow in both the sheer number of laws and complexity.

Please call someone who is trained and experienced to lead you through the legal mine fields or you are taking grave risks. I can be your guide, at (864) 834-8111 Advertising Material. If you have a complaint contact the Commission on Lawyer Conduct at 803-734-2037.

Two Big Days to Go Shopping!

By Christopher Lane

In addition to celebrating two well-known November holidays, many of us would enthusiastically claim there are two more that happen immediately after Thanksgiving. Unless you live under a rock, most of you know these days as…Black Friday and Cyber Monday! They occur this year on November 24th and 27th and to millions of shoppers, they are the “Holy Grail” of shopping opportu-nities!

Black Friday has been kicking off the Christmas shopping season on the day after Thanksgiving since 1952, enticing holiday shoppers with great sales and extended hours of operation, including staying open all night! Having long ago worked in retail myself, I wince when the big box stores announce those long hours. Almost 16 mil-lion people who work in retail across the country will experience sore feet and a severe lack of sleep. They’ll be putting in some very long hours to help lots and lots of people go a bit crazy as they again compete in a mad early morning rush for the best shopping deals.

All that said, the day after Thanksgiving tends to be kind of special anyway, especially if we, unlike our unfortunate retail brethren, get the day off from work. If we’re not obsessed with shopping, we get to ease into a pleasant day, often by first watching NBC’s “Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade”, followed of course by the “National Dog Show”.

Having that day free also allows many of us to remember, if not re-live, childhood memories of being taken by our parents and/or grand-parents to the big department store in the city. For me, that meant traveling by train from the suburbs into downtown Chicago, where my sister and I would gaze with wonder at the amazing Christmas window displays of Marshall Field’s Department Store. Once inside, we would crane our necks upward to marvel at the beautiful giant Christmas tree, before urgently tugging at our parents’ hands to go spend some magical time with Santa! Now operating under the own-ership of Macy’s since 2005, those wonderful old traditions still con-tinue and are enjoyed by many thousands of children and adults every year.

While many of us prefer to avoid all the shopping madness of Black Friday, we’re actually just waiting for Cyber Monday! This is when we computer nerds cleverly shop online for incredible bargains, often with a greater choice of stores participating. Shopping this way can result in big savings, while avoiding the hassle of fighting traffic, unruly crowds and the need to get up at a ridiculously early hour to be one of the first in line at some store. A word of caution: be sure of your shopping source! If you don’t recognize the website or the seller’s name, it may be best to purchase from someplace else, no matter how good that low price looks.

A lot of you are waiting for these two special days. We’re fortunate to live in a country that gives us so many choices. As we enjoy the long Thanksgiving holiday weekend, let’s remember to keep it spe-cial with our family and friends and to remain thankful for such abundances. And then yeah...let’s go shopping!
