As Europe’s largest specialist art and design university, we understand creativity. Our six world-renowned Colleges form a vibrant, artistic community, and our teaching staff is made up of professional creatives, including artists, photojournalists and games designers.

We can give you the teaching, facilities and creative space you need to explore your ideas, skills and unique vision. As a UAL student, you will learn from academics working on some of the most exciting research across the creative sector, and you’ll be supported by a team of technical staff who’ll empower you to bring your ideas to life. We’re here to challenge you, too. Challenge you to think differently, work in new ways, and push your ideas to the next level.

Our Colleges have a global reputation for excellence in the arts, which was reiterated in 2015 when the QS World University Rankings placed UAL 8th in the world, and 2nd in the UK, for Art & Design. The education we provide will help you seize all the opportunities available to you, whichever country you choose to live and work in after you graduate. We will prepare you for the world beyond university right from the start, with a focus on career-relevant skills, knowledge and experience. This ranges from advice on protecting your intellectual property or sourcing funding for your start-up business, to paid internships with leading industry players.

But of course the university experience is about so much more than the career path you decide to follow. Our courses are designed to stimulate original thinking and rigorously develop talent in a supportive and nurturing environment. We are home to more than 19,000 students from over 140 countries. You will expand your horizons, be inspired by new ideas and collaborate with people from different cultures and traditions.

UAL is a place to meet new people, try new things, discover unexpected talents and live in one of the world’s most exciting cities. Studying in London gives you a unique perspective on art and design. The face of our city is constantly changing, with a thriving culture of pop-ups, street art and performance spaces.

Use this prospectus to find the course and College that are right for you, and learn more about how we can support you during your time with us. You can also see what our students, graduates, teaching and technical staff have to say, and see some of the dynamic work produced here.

I look forward to welcoming you to London to start your own success story.

There has never been a better time to pursue your passion for art, design, communication, fashion or performance: the creative and cultural industries are booming. In the UK, they are the fastest growing sector of the economy, employing nearly 6% of the workforce and generating £8 million per hour.

We have a track record for launching and furthering careers. Our graduates can be found in every part and at every level of the creative and cultural sectors, from heads of global businesses to self-employed practitioners, and on shortlists for awards ranging from the Turner Prize to the Oscars.

Armed with a UAL qualification you could follow the path of many of our alumni to become a world-leader in your field. You will be an asset to any employer, or perfectly prepared to set up your own enterprise. 89% of our recent graduates are undertaking further study or are working; over a quarter are freelance or have their own business.

We’re as career-focused as you are. Our Colleges foster impressive links with industry, which often take the form of live projects. Companies set students a brief, and in return benefit from an innovative take on their brand. Jobs websites and databases include CSM Talent Scout and LCF Careers Live, which give top names in business and the art and design world access to emerging graduate talent, and allow students to forge impressive networks. See ‘Our Colleges’ (pages 56-107) for more details.

Our Careers and Employability team will equip you with the skills to develop your practice, business and employment prospects. Services and activities include a range of business advice workshops, talks and networking events, work opportunities and a dedicated website with valuable information and resources. Artsmart Graduate Career Fair and Creative Enterprise Week are two further initiatives which support the prospects of our students and graduates.

Careers and Employability also manages our in-house temping agency ArtsTemps, online jobs board Creative Opportunities, Artquest, which provides support to visual artists and craftspeople, and Own-it, which provides intellectual property advice for students and graduates.

Career support can be found across UAL, in the form of professional development programmes, talks and events, work placements, internships, awards, bursaries and exhibitions.

To be considered for a UAL undergraduate course, you usually need to have a strong portfolio and considerable knowledge of your subject. Our preparatory courses enable you to develop the skills, experience and body of work needed for further study. See ‘Join Us’ (pages 126-135) for information on how to apply.

Foundation Diplomas in Art and DesignFoundation Diplomas in Art and Design are a common route into practice-based undergraduate study at UAL. These year-long courses allow you to explore various art and design disciplines, experiment with a range of materials, methods and approaches and build a portfolio.

We offer two Foundation Diplomas in Art and Design. You can choose to study in either ‘diagnostic’ or ‘specialist’ mode.

Specialist mode:If you are confident in your future direction, you can follow a particular pathway from the beginning of the course and specialise further later in the year.

Communication pathway specialisms: – Film and Animation – Graphic Design – Illustration

Design pathway specialisms: – 3D Design Product Spatial – Design for Performance, Theatre, Stage and Screen.

Foundation Studies in PerformanceThis one-year, full-time course is offered at Drama Centre London, Central Saint Martins. With its focus firmly on practical skills and techniques, it offers a real experience of drama school life and provides 30 hours of contact teaching each week. You will have close contact with professional actors, visit theatres and other cultural centres weekly, and at the end of the course you’ll have the opportunity to participate in a professional public production at the Platform Theatre. The course has a strong record of students gaining places on undergraduate courses at recognised drama schools.

Preparation courses for international studentsUAL offers three degree preparation courses designed specifically for international students, each of which provides English language support and academic writing guidance throughout.

International: Introduction to Design and Media CommunicationThis one-year course, based at London College of Communication, provides a thorough introduction to the practice and theory of either media communication or design disciplines including graphic design, spatial design, journalism, publishing, public relations, advertising, and media and cultural studies. When you apply, you can choose to specialise in either design or media communication.

International: Introduction to the Study of FashionThis one-year course offered by London College of Fashion will develop your creative ability and your communication and business skills within a fashion context.

The course is focused on building a range of skills and knowledge and on developing a portfolio of work which shows engagement with a particular area of fashion. As the course progresses you’ll have the opportunity to develop an interest in design, media communication or business. This will help you to choose the most appropriate area of fashion at undergraduate level for your particular skills, talents and ambitions.

introduction

International Preparation for Fashion (Certificate in Higher Education)London College of Fashion also offers the one-year International Preparation for Fashion course, successful completion of which gives you a Certificate in Higher Education. This course allows you to explore your creative, academic and professional potential in fashion, ensuring that you make an informed choice of undergraduate course and preparing you for the level of work required in the first year of your degree.

The first term introduces you to three areas of fashion: fashion design and technology; fashion media and communication; and fashion business and management. The first term should be approached with an open mind – experience of all three areas will allow you to discover your strengths and interests, and assessment of your work will help you specialise in one area for the rest of the year. In the second term, you will develop a body of work in your chosen specialism, and in the third term you will develop your knowledge and skills even further by producing a major personal project.

An advanced and extensive portfolio is required to apply for this Level 4 course. Full entry requirements can be found on the course page on our website.

We offer more than 2,000 short courses to 20,000 students each year.

UAL is a provider of short courses, available across all six Colleges, to adult learners and younger students aged 13 to 18. We offer a breadth of subjects that includes fashion, fine art, communication and graphic design, interior, spatial and 3D design, journalism, performance and theatre. We also offer bespoke training for industry and businesses, for groups or individuals with specific training needs.

Our short courses – Preparatory courses for students aged 13 to 18, run during holiday periods. These provide an opportunity to experiment with different subjects, develop personal creativity, and gain the skills to progress to Higher Education and full-time degree programmes. They include the three-week UAL International Summer School. Courses take place at campus locations situated across central London and at residential campuses just outside of London.

– Portfolio preparation courses are designed for those who want to prepare an application for Further Education, undergraduate or postgraduate levels or to trial subject areas and art college teaching.

– Evening, weekend, daytime and holiday short courses are perfect for people looking to move up the career ladder, change career, apply for further study or take a break in order to pursue a passion.

– Online ‘virtual studio’ courses are for students who cannot attend courses on campus. They enable students from around the world to access our first-class art, design, fashion, communication and performance education. They also cover portfolio preparation for applications to UAL foundation and degree courses.

UAL’s Language Centre is based at our High Holborn site in central London and offers a variety of courses and tutorials to students who wish to improve their English and academic skills or learn another language in an art and design context.

Presessional English This course is open to students whose first language is not English and who have been offered a place on an undergraduate or postgraduate course at one of our Colleges. Presessional English will prepare you for your degree course by developing your academic skills and helping you achieve the English language requirement. Passing Presessional English allows you to progress to your degree course without taking another International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test.

Insessional EnglishThe Language Centre offers free classes to current full-time UAL students whose first language is not English. Most classes relate directly to your main course content, while others teach general academic skills. Face-to-face and online tutorials are also available to give you individual support with written assignments or any other areas of study you’d like help with.

General, Academic and English PlusThe Language Centre runs year-round General English, Academic English and a wide range of English Plus courses. English Plus is a unique combination of language learning and practical training in art, design, fashion or communication taught by tutors at our Colleges. These courses are open to anyone looking to improve their English for general study or professional purposes.

Modern languagesIf you’d like to learn another language during your time at UAL, you can join one of our Language, Arts and Culture evening classes. The classes combine learning a modern language with exploring the country’s art and culture. Classes are available in French, German, Italian, Mandarin and Spanish.

Our Study Abroad programme offers students from outside the UK the opportunity to study in London as part of their course at their home university. You can study abroad at UAL in three different ways, and all courses offer the following:

– A dedicated Study Abroad team on hand to answer all your questions

– A Welcome Programme to help you settle into College and London life

– Social events throughout the year

– Guaranteed accommodation if you apply before the deadline.

Integrated Study AbroadIf you choose our Integrated Study Abroad course you’ll work alongside our BA students for one, two or three terms and be fully integrated into the course and student life. This is ideal if you’re looking for an intensive learning experience and like independent, self-directed study.

You’ll have the opportunity to extend your study by two weeks by taking the European Art History module. Through lectures, visits, discussion groups and studio-based workshops, this module offers the opportunity to engage with the art, history, environment and culture of London and Europe. You can also enhance your learning with an optional European city trip.

Integrated Study Abroad is available at Camberwell College of Arts, Central Saint Martins, Chelsea College of Arts, London College of Communication and Wimbledon College of Arts.

Semester Study AbroadOur Semester courses are designed especially for Study Abroad students and give you the opportunity to study at UAL with highly structured teaching and support from your teachers. You will spend one or two 14-week semesters working alongside other international students in your chosen discipline. You can choose from a range of electives that meet your study needs, and you’ll have the chance to take part in a study trip to Barcelona, Berlin or Paris.

Semester Study Abroad is available at Camberwell College of Arts, Central Saint Martins, Chelsea College of Arts and London College of Fashion.

Summer Study Abroad If you’d prefer a shorter learning experience, our Summer Study Abroad courses are for you. You’ll study with us for between three and eight weeks and can choose from over 30 courses, catering to all levels of experience. All of our summer courses provide intensive experience of practical projects, tutorials, workshops and visits to places of interest.

Summer Study Abroad is available at all of our Colleges.

Six unique Colleges make up UAL, each with a history dating back to the 19th or early 20th centuries and a long-established, global reputation for work of outstanding quality.

Our Colleges provide their own individual culture, philosophy and focus, and members of our academic staff bring their own interests and expertise to the courses they teach. This means you can choose the College that best suits your talents, interests and ambition. Whatever you decide, you will be taught by experts and practising artists, designers and communicators, and immersed in the world of professional practice – through traditional lectures and seminars, as well as live briefs, work placements, exhibitions and performances.

Learning is creative and strongly linked with industry. Much of the teaching and feedback on your studio‑based project work takes place through discussions with your tutor. You will also be given opportunities to take part in lively debates with fellow students, and to review each other’s work.

Teaching staff will give you plenty of support to explore the boundaries of your discipline, take creative risks and develop confidence. This, plus the transferable skills you gain, will enhance your employment prospects and benefit you in the workplace.

Each College boasts specialist equipment and facilities, including stunning galleries, dramatic workspaces and performance venues. Students have access to a range of learning resources – including archives and special collections, with items dating from the 15th century to the 21st – and can borrow materials from all of the College libraries.

London livingLife as a London student needn’t cost a fortune. In general, London is an expensive city, but with over 360,000 students at nearly 50 universities, colleges and schools, the city is well equipped to cater for a student budget.

In terms of living costs, your biggest expenditure will be rent, which will vary depending on whether you choose to stay in halls of residence or private accommodation. See pages 114-117 for more details.

Your travel costs will also vary depending on where you live and where you need to travel to, but you may be eligible for a Zip or 18+ Student Oyster photocard from Transport for London, which will give you discounted travel on trains, tubes, buses and trams.

tfl.gov.uk

All students aged 16 and over who have started a further or higher education course can apply for an NUS extra card which entitles you to offers and discounts at a wide variety of retailers.

You can also enjoy some of the world’s greatest galleries and museums free of charge: the National Gallery, Saatchi Gallery, Tate Britain, Tate Modern and the V&A Museum are all free to enter. The Southbank, Trafalgar Square and many of London’s parks host free events throughout the year, and Totally Thames brings a wealth of free arts and cultural events along the river every September.

A global cultural and creative centre, London is an integral part of the UAL identity. It defines us, inspires us, challenges us and is central to the experience of studying with us.

Life in the capital is all about making connections. Wherever you come from or whatever your background, you will meet like-minded people. More than eight million of us call this diverse and vibrant city home. Around 300 languages are spoken here and over 270 nationalities are represented.

London’s art, music, literature, theatre and films are celebrated all around the world, and the city thrums with creativity. Internationally renowned arts institutions nestle beside small and independent cultural venues – it is this connection between old and new, spontaneity and establishment, that is the very heart of London’s unique creative character.

World-famous West End theatres sit alongside the London Fringe, which produces cutting-edge performances in unconventional spaces. ‘Silicon Roundabout’ – a major hub for creative, digitally savvy businesses – has forced itself into the media consciousness alongside established icons like the BBC. In the shadow of east London’s landmark ArcelorMittal Orbit tower (Anish Kapoor, Chelsea College of Art and Design, 1978), artists and designers have established studios and galleries in the former industrial spaces of Hackney Wick and Fish Island.

Across the city, up-and-coming creative communities are charting the cultural map of the future.

You can join them.

UAL has an Accommodation Services team who can help you find a place to live throughout your time with us. A full guide to the services we offer can be found on our website.

accommodation

Halls of residenceLife in halls of residence is a communal and enriching experience. We are always happy to help students find the most suitable and convenient place to live, in a fully student-focused environment, within easy reach of your College.

We offer around 3,300 places in self-catering accommodation in halls of residence across the capital. Most rooms have a private bathroom with a shower, toilet and basin, and residents share a kitchen. Some are ‘room only’, where students share the bathroom and kitchen, and there are also self-contained studios. All rooms include a bed, desk, chair and wardrobe, and we offer shared rooms for students on a tighter budget.

Your safety is our priority, and our students say they feel very safe in UAL accommodation. All our halls have closed-circuit television (CCTV), secure entry and staff available 24 hours a day.

We have 12 halls of residence: – Brooke Hall – Camberwell Campus – Cordwainers Court – Don Gratton House – Furzedown Student Village – Glassyard Building – Highline Building – Manna Ash House – Sir John Cass Hall – Sketch House – The Costume Store – Will Wyatt Court.

Our Colleges and halls of residence are located across London, but the transport network is excellent and students get discounted travel on London Underground, buses and overground trains.

Turn to the map on pages 134-135 to see the locations of our halls of residence.

How to applyApplications should be made online, and open around May each year. Rooms are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, so you should start applying as soon as you accept a place at UAL. Details of all halls of residence and a guide to applying are available on our website. Please note, we prioritise applications from international students, disabled students and students under 18.

Students with disabilitiesWe have a wide range of accessible accommodation and we prioritise accommodation applications from students with disabilities. A description of the facilities for disabled students in each hall is available online and you can discuss your needs with our dedicated Disability Liaison Officer.

International studentsIf you are an international student, you’re guaranteed a place in halls for your first year if Accommodation Services receives your application for accommodation by 1 June 2016. When you arrive in London for the first time, we’ll arrange for a free taxi to collect you from the airport and take you to your halls of residence or private accommodation.

airport collection

Your welfareThere is a Student Welfare Mentor based at each hall who provides support and advice to residents through regular drop-in sessions. You can talk to your Student Welfare Mentor about any issues that have an impact on your life at UAL, from concerns about housemates or managing your workload, to moving away from home and making new friends.

Social lifeOur award-winning Social Programme runs events and activities in every hall throughout the year.

The events are organised by Social Reps – fellow students that live with you. They organise a wide range of activities, from movie nights to art gallery excursions. There are regular cross-halls events, giving you opportunities to meet people from across UAL – all events are free or very low-cost, so everybody can take part.

Other accommodation optionsIf you decide our halls are not for you, you can choose to rent a room in a privately run hall of residence with students from different universities, or in non-university accommodation through a private landlord. We have a dedicated adviser who can provide information on how to secure private accommodation, and read over contracts.

private accommodation

“I work for the Social Programme which provides events for students in halls. We have a movie night on Wednesdays and weekly ‘Sunday

snacks’, along with seasonal events such as ‘worst-dressed’ parties

in the common room (always hilarious!) We also run a whole programme

of events for students during September and October. These often

take place outside of halls, so students can discover exciting things to do around London. My role is hosting

these events in my halls and then chaperone any events

outside of halls, which I get to enjoy too!”

Hannah SwainsonSocial Rep – The Costume Store

“The Student Welfare Mentor acts as a bridge between the students living in halls and the support services

that UAL offers. As the mentors are all students, we can easily

understand the impact of certain issues on someone’s wellbeing and empathise

with the students contacting us. We offer three weekly drop-in sessions

where we can discuss issues that might affect wellbeing and

living experience in halls, and therefore give the right support and impartial

guidance. In halls, we act as a first point of contact if there is any

cause for concern.”

Money matters

Tuition feesTuition fees cover the cost of teaching and use of facilities while you’re at UAL. You’ll need to pay them at the start of each academic year while you’re studying with us.

Like all UK universities, we charge two different rates of tuition fees: the lower Home/EU fee and the higher Overseas fee. These terms come from the fact that, broadly speaking, Home/EU fees are charged to UK and EU nationals and Overseas fees are charged to international students. However, the rules are more complex than this, and your fee status depends on whether you meet certain criteria, which may vary depending on the level of course you’re applying for.

When you apply for your course, we will ask you to give us some information about yourself and your family to help assess your fee status. You may be asked to provide official documents to support the information you give.

Tuition fees: Foundation Diploma in Art and DesignHome/EU studentsFree, if you’re under the age of 19 on 31 August of the year you start your course. Tuition fees of between £3,900* and £5,297* will apply if you’re over 19. The amount you pay depends on your age and the level of any previous study you’ve undertaken.

If you’re 24 or over when the course starts, you may be eligible to apply for a loan for the tuition fees. There are no loans for living costs.

Scholarships and bursariesWe offer a wide range of scholarships and bursaries. Eligibility will depend on criteria such as your chosen subject or course, level of study and nationality. Some awards are based on financial need while others are offered to students who show academic excellence or creative potential. The amount of funding provided by each award varies, with some covering the full cost of tuition and others providing a contribution towards living costs.

The scholarships and bursaries available change each year and have strict deadlines. Check our website to find the latest awards.

undergraduate scholarships

Cost of livingYou’ll need to make sure you have enough money to cover your living costs while you’re in London, including things like accommodation, food,

travel, study materials and leisure. Our Student Advisers can help you plan and manage a budget, and offer one-to-one advice.

We’ve got useful advice and money-saving tips on our website, where you’ll find information on:

– Discounts available to students – Scholarships, bursaries and awards – Charitable organisations and trusts that may be able to help with financial worries – Professional and Career Development Loans – Eligibility for relevant UK state benefits.

living costs

Working and studyingPart-time work could help you cover your living costs and is a great way to gain work experience while you study. If you’d like to work part-time, we can support your search for the ideal job.

Creative Opportunities is UAL’s jobs and work-placement website. We advertise as many as 500 vacancies each month.

ArtsTemps is our in-house recruitment agency, run by Careers and Employability (page 12). It recruits students and recent graduates for paid temporary jobs across UAL, providing hands-on creative experience and the opportunity to work on a range of projects tailored to your skills.

There are limits on the amount of hours international students can work on a study visa, so you should always check the rules before you take on a part-time job.

In a global society, studying and living in a new country changes everything – especially you, and your world view. There are opportunities for students enrolled on UAL courses to spend one or more terms studying outside of the UK at a partner institution or on a work placement abroad.

ExchangesOur programme of Erasmus and non-Erasmus exchanges gives you the opportunity to live and study in another country, while earning credits towards your course at UAL. We partner with universities across Europe and worldwide.

If you choose to study at one of our partner institutions in the EU, you may be able to apply for an Erasmus Grant. These grants provide a contribution towards the cost of living abroad. Wherever you study you won’t have to pay tuition fees to our partners and you may be eligible for a reduced tuition fee at UAL.

Your College Exchanges Coordinator can help with your application. Our Mobility Manager and Erasmus Coordinator can also give you advice and answer general questions about the programme.

Erasmus

TraineeshipsSome courses at UAL give students the opportunity to undertake a work placement or traineeship during their degree. Check full course information on our website to see if your chosen course offers an Erasmus work placement or traineeship.

When you apply to a practice-based course in a subject like fine art, graphic design and other hands-on disciplines, you may be asked to submit a portfolio of relevant work. Check the course information on our website to find out if a portfolio is required for your chosen course.

For most courses, the portfolio is the most important part of your application. Here are some tips from course leaders on how you can put together a really strong creative portfolio.

What’s a portfolio?A portfolio is a collection of your work that shows how your skills and ideas have developed over a period of time. It demonstrates your creativity, personality, abilities and commitment, and helps us to evaluate your potential. When we assess a portfolio, the research and processes you have used to develop your work are as important as the final work itself. We are particularly interested in your most recent work, even if it’s unfinished.

It’s not always necessary or practical for applicants to provide us with full portfolios at the application stage, so we might ask for a ‘mini’ or ‘digital’ portfolio – usually a collection of photographs of your work. Once we’ve assessed this, we might ask to see your full portfolio. If you’re based in the UK we’ll ask you to attend a full portfolio review at the relevant College, and if you’re based outside of the UK we’ll ask you to send us your full portfolio.

What to includeAs well as final pieces, your port folio should include examples of your research and the way you develop your ideas. Always include sketchbooks or visual journals, as these show us your personal creative process. You may also wish to include any design development plans, consumer research, written notes or even models and sculptures you may have. However, you should only bring one or two 3D pieces with you if you’re asked to attend a portfolio review. You can include photographs of any other pieces you’d like us to see, such as installation work or larger items.

You shouldn’t focus too much on one type of work, e.g. painting or life drawing – try to demonstrate a range of your skills. Your work doesn’t necessarily have to be shown in chronological order. In fact, it’s better to start and end with your strongest pieces of work. There’s no limit on how much work to include in your portfolio but you might have to transport it to an interview or portfolio review, so think about how practical this is.

Our portfolio preparation coursesOur Colleges offer a range of courses to help you prepare your portfolio. These include ‘orientation’ courses for each study level, full-time portfolio preparation courses for various subjects (lasting from one term to a full year), and short courses (lasting from a few days to a few weeks). A full list of courses is available on the portfolio preparation page on our website.
