Tuition Assistance for UUP Members“Space Available” Program—This negotiatedbenefit allows full-time and part-time employeesin the UUP bargaining unit to take one courseeach semester and special session (e.g., summersession and intercession) from a UUP-representedstate-operated SUNY campus tuition free, as longas space is available in the course. Fees other thantuition are paid by the employee.
Those interested in applying should contactHuman Resources at the institution they will beattending. UUP chapter offices can also provideinformation about the process and addressmember questions.(Contract Article 49)
EKB eLearning ProgramEmpire Knowledgebank (EKB) eLearningProgram—This program allows UUP-representedemployees access to eLearning products providedby Enterprise Training Solutions Inc. through theEKB license. Employees have the opportunity toaccess thousands of eLearning courses, eBooksand short course videos for opportunities to en-hance their professional and career development,for certification preparation and continuing educa-tion in a variety of areas. The EKB license can beaccessed anytime and anywhere with an internetconnection and is provided at no expense to thecampus or the employee.

Programs to Assist Members with Education,Professional Development and Training
Grant ProgramsJoint Labor-Management Programs are contractuallynegotiated and jointly administered by state-levelcommittees composed of representatives fromUUP, SUNY, and the Governor’s Office of EmployeeRelations. These programs address mutually identi-fied needs and goals of UUP and New York state.Some programs, such as the Individual DevelopmentAward program, are administered at the campuslevel by joint committees consisting of representa-tives from UUP and the campus administration.
The following programs are exclusive to UUPbargaining unit members and focus on individualemployee development:
Individual Development Awards (IDAs)—IDAs aredesigned to support a variety of professional devel-opment projects or activities, assisting eligibleemployees in developing their full professionalpotential and to prepare for advancement. CampusProfessional Development Committees, comprisedof UUP members and management representatives,are formed to review applications and award fund-ing. Funding is available to full-time and part-timebargaining unit members. Maximum award amountis $1,000 per employee per award period. Interestedemployees should reach out to their UUP chapteroffice for specific award timelines.

Campus Grants Program—An individual employee,a campus group or committee, or a multi-campusgroup or committee may apply for this program.This is intended to supplement campus funding forprojects or activities that would develop or enhancecooperative problem solving, professional develop-
ment, creative use and understanding of technology,safer working conditions, and understanding andfacilitating diversity in the workplace. Except inextraordinary circumstances, the maximum amountawarded per application is $15,000.

Dr. Herbert N. Wright Memorial Safety and HealthTraining Award Program—This program providesan opportunity for employees with safety and healthand environmental responsibilities to update andrefine the skills and knowledge needed to recognize,control and correct potential hazards in the work-place and to ensure compliance with applicable lawsand regulations. Funds are available for educational,training, and skill-building activities at local orremote sites. The maximum individual awardunder this program is $3,000. An individual mayapply for more than one award within the currentcontract period.

Dr. Nuala McGann Drescher Leave Program—Thisprogram, open to full-time term employees, seeks topromote a broad diversity of award recipients withpreference given to minorities, women, employeeswith disabilities, or employees with military statuswho are preparing for permanent or continuingappointment. Types of support available include:payment of employee’s regular salary by thecampus; salary for a replacement; and other relatedexpenses for research or study with a justification.

Employment Coaching and Placement Program—This program provides financial support for employ-ment coaching, placement fees and related expensesto employees whose employment has been termi-nated due to retrenchment, or who have beennotified of retrenchment, or who are perceivedto be at high risk of retrenchment. A maximumof $3,500 may be awarded for a one-year period,depending on the employee’s plan and availabilityof funds.

Grants for Employees with Disabilities Program—This program establishes a fund for full-time or part-time employees with disabilities, as defined by theAmericans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The fundscover out-of-pocket expenses incurred for a work-related project or activity where such assistanceis not provided by the ADA. They are not intendedfor accommodations that the campus must provideunder the ADA. The maximum individual award is$5,000 for each application.

Leave for Calendar Year Employees—This programfor full-time employees with a calendar-year (12month) appointment is intended to provide releasetime and salary replacement to assist eligibleemployees in developing their full professionalpotential and in preparing for advancement. Onlyexpenses for salary for a replacement for a periodof at least five days will be considered for funding.All other expenses that might be required toconduct the project or activity must be providedby other sources. Employees who accrue annual
leave are not required to charge those creditsfor any project or activity funded by this program.A maximum of $4,000 for salary replacement maybe awarded to eligible employees once in eachaward period.

Retraining Fellowship Program—This programprovides financial support to employees who havebeen terminated due to retrenchment, who havebeen notified of retrenchment or perceived to beat high risk of retrenchment, or whose retrainingwould accommodate shifting program needs. Fund-ing is provided for employees to pursue an organizedcourse of study to attain other employment oppor-tunities or to maintain their current employment.If course work is pursued at an accredited institutionother than a SUNY institution, the maximum amountreimbursed for tuition is at the SUNY rate in effectat the time.

Campus Training and Leadership Workshops—These one-day, on-site workshops provide leadershipdevelopment to bargaining unit members on SUNYcampuses. Delivered by field experts from EmpireState College, workshop topics include: Interper-sonal and Cross Generational Communications;Diversity: Learning How to Leverage “Difference”at Work; Leadership; and Conflict Resolution andTeam Building.
