Welcome......to issue 9, our Crowdfunding special issue. I have been interested in crowdfunding for a number of years and have backed quite a few projects from photography, short films, art and magazines here in the UK and the USA. If you have not heard of crowdfunding or not sure what the fuss is about, head to page 5 to find out more!

YTC are pleased that Olida Publishing, a local book publisher here in Aberdeenshire, have provided the books for our Books pages. This month we have a childrens picture book and an extract from Windscape. Find them on page 13.

I want to say thank for the feedback we got on our new What’s On pages. We are pleased that the new format got big thumbs up and this issues selection of events can be found on page 14 and 15.

Look out again for extra content from your print copy if you have a Smartphone. More details are on page 4.

Once again we thank our advertisers for their support. If you give any of them a call, please do let them know that you saw them in the Your Town Centre Magazine!

Peterhead Marina Peterhead Bay Marina is very much one of the jewels in the crown of the facilities that the town has to offer. Opening in August 1994 it has gone from strength to strength since, serving not only the local sailing fraternity but also an international one. Visitors come from all over the world to berth in Peterhead from an overnight stopover to a few nights in the town, it is ideally situated for those coming from the continent as it is the nearest point across the north sea from Holland.

The facilities on site are maintained to the highest standards with toilet/shower facilities, fresh water, electricity, free wifi and a newly added laundry giving some much needed home comforts to weary travellers. Marina manager James Clubb is also on hand with a wealth of local knowledge and information; this larger than life character is very much a warm welcoming face for any weary traveller and he instantly builds a rapport with any visitors to the Marina with his friendly charm.

If you’d like to find out more about the facilities at the Marine why not visit www.peterheadport.co.uk/peterhead_bay_marina.htm

Raising money for charities and good local causes is all around us. A visit to our website events calendar and you will quickly see many events that will be raising money. From sponsored bag packing, Charity Craft Fairs and Quiz Nights. Many events are well supported and raise huge amounts of money. However for many causes and charities’; fundraising is tough at the best of times and is increasingly difficult during a recession.

As time moves on there is a growing sense that we need to move away from this traditional route of fundraising to a more innovative, creative, wider reaching and a longer-term approach. A route that I have taken part in by pledging small sums of money to projects that excite me, interest me and make me believe in the people behind them.

This route is Crowdfunding. It enables people to get creative, to stand out from the crowd, extend their reach and encourage new conversations with potential supporters.

What is crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding is an extension of what people have been doing for centuries – patronage, supporting family, friends and the local community.

Today Crowdfunding is simply a new way of using technology to help people with an idea to raise money and bring it to life. The idea could be a business idea, a startup, a community project, a charity or perhaps a social enterprise. It is a global phenomenon that provides an alternative route to donations and from an extended audience.

Have a think back to when you used to go round getting people to sign up on your sponsor walk form and then collect the money after it was done. It was all done face to face. Now think about today and the explosion in the use of social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. As we hear how the number of users to these sites is growing every day, the opportunities to reach out for support also increases. Getting people to sign your sponsor form is now online. It is now virtual and with people you may never meet face to face.

6 • www.YourTownCentre.co.uk • May-June 2013

So how does it work?

Build your community and generate interest in your idea before you launch. Do your research and find out where your target market is consuming their data, spending their time, and go there. Start to engage with them and build your audience and let them know once it is up and running.

Create your project – it’s simply an online pitch, so tell your story, engage people, choose the amount of money you want to raise and a time limit, normally 30, 45 or 60 days. Uploading images and video to illustrate your story will help in generating interest and find out more about the project and the people behind it.

Create rewards – a series of compelling, unique, exciting rewards will make it a much quicker and easier decision for strangers to your project to back you. So be creative, ask your patrons and backers to donate things, use any celebrity connections you have. They’re bound to be on social media and will happily publicise anything they’re involved in. You’re reaching their followers each time they tweet, ultimately extending your own reach.

Then the hard work starts, reaching out to your community and asking them to support you. It takes time and it takes effort. Create a mini campaign plan and work hard. It’s not a one-off activity; this is all part of building your supporting community for the future.

At the end of the day you get out what you put in, there is potential to raise more than you initially asked for, and you can post and be involved with as many different projects as you like.

Plum

Shona Maguire or her code name, Plum, as she likes to say is a Scottish songwriter and producer who grew up in a 150 year old house in Aberdeenshire before moving to Peebles in the Borders.

From the age of 15 she was keen to learn studio engineering and recording and gained work experience at Split Level Studios in Edinburgh.

Becoming frustrated at being unable to get across her creative ideas exactly as she wanted, in 2006 Plum signed up to a Music Production course with Point Blank, an award winning music production school in London. It wasn’t long until she was then signed up to American label Summer Rain Recordings, releasing The Whispering Chamber in 2007 and then The Glory Feast in 2008.

Returning to Scotland, Plum then went on to quickly establish herself as a notable force in the Scottish electronic music scene and was snapped up by prestigious label Benbecula Records as the only female artist in their 11 year history. 2009 saw the release of the critically acclaimed album Different Skin.

In 2012, Plum turned to Sponsume to raise £5000 to make her next album a reality. Kindly agreeing to be our first ever featured crowdfunder, read about her experience and what the future holds...

Where did the idea of crowdfunding come from?

I got really close to being funded by a few different grant making bodies, and feedback had been really positive, but at the end of the day I didn't get the funding. I was damned if that was going to stop me and that was then when I found Sponsume.

I loved the idea that people who like the music can be part of making the album release happen. My project, The Seed, was a concept album based around the seed of an idea, and how an idea can be planted and left to grow…

What was the money for?

The money was for the cost of producing hard copy CDs, uploading to iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, music videos and website creation. I also had marketing costs including direct marketing, print advertising and brand identity including merchandise. I couldn’t release an album without some kind of launch party so venue hire was also needed.

Once your project went live, what was it like to see the pledges come in?

Once it was launched, I utilised social media to promote the project, updating people on a daily basis on what percentage we had reached, and thanking each individual sponsor. This always seemed to get more people to pledge and back the album, and was very exciting in the last 2 weeks (when it really rapidly grew). Some of my fans were absolutely fantastic in helping me to promote the crowd funding, writing about it in their blogs, and begging people to invest so that they could get their copy of the album.

At this time, Sponsume only paid out if you reached your total goal, which I think did work as an incentive to make sure I made the album at all. So for some fans, they saw it as a necessity to promote the campaign in order to make it happen. I am extremely grateful to them for all their help with that!

Would you do it again?

I think it’s a great way to utilise your fan base, however small it may be at the start, into helping you get to the next level.

Any tips for those thinking about crowdfunding?

I tried to make the packages as interesting as possible, and included a lot of unique one-of-a-kind options. Those seemed to be very popular. You can still watch my video on the Sponsume website and the rewards that my backers received at http://www.sponsume.com/project/meme

What’s next for you?

I worked really hard on making the album as good as it could be, and I am extremely proud of it. I have since gone on to be the first female winner of

a Scottish Alternative Music Award (SAMA) for Best Electronic Act, which has been incredible.

I am currently thinking about Crowdfunding a tour in collaboration with Fiona Soe Paing and Citizen Mule.

Thank you Plum!

Plum plays at Café Drummonds on Belmont Street, Aberdeen on Friday 24th May.

Crowdfunding feaTure

Where did the idea of crowdfunding come from?

When I initially thought about doing the zine, I knew the main problem would be the cost to produce it. Aft er all, it is a fi nancial gamble to produce something that you are not sure if people would not want or need. So, in order to test the water, I thought I would open it up to others. A diff erent way of market research if you like. If enough people wanted to read such a zine then they would back it. It also meant that if I had enough backers the zine would have to happen. It is too easy to procrastinate on a creative project.

What was the money for?

I wanted to just gain enough money in order to produce the zine that I had envisioned. Due to the paper stock and the quality of printing that I was looking for, I knew it would not be cheap.

Once your project went live, what was it like to see the pledges come in?

At fi rst it was very strange; our fi rst backer was all the way from Hawaii! I couldn’t believe it and remember tweeting about it. Once we started to shout about the project via social media the backers just kept coming in. Aft er only 4 days, we set ourselves a goal of 15 days, we hit our target.

Any further pledges that came in aft er this was a bonus. Th e hard work then began to produce the zine, get it printed, post out to our backers along with their rewards.

Would you do it again?

Defi nitely! It's nice to know people actually want something you have created. It can be a bit of a rollercoaster ride, but for me I found it the best way to test the market without investing too much money.

Any tips for those thinking about crowdfunding?

Use social media to your advantage, 78% of our backers came via twitter. It is a free and easy to use tool. Engage with your target audience, the more people that like your idea, the greater chance you have that they will share it.

What’s next for you and Naewye Zine?

We are currently getting ready for issue 2. As long as we always have the funds that were raised in the bank, it means the zine can carry on. If we make it to the planned 6 issues then I can call it a success.

Naewye Zine

Our next featured Crowdfunder that we caught up with is Paul Mullen. Paul is a graphic designer working in Aberdeen and his vision was to produce a zine that would share the creative work in Aberdeen. Th e objective of the zine is to introduce to readers, near and far, creative work and events that they might not have learned about otherwise.

He turned to Crowdfunding site, Kickstarter, for his Naewye Zine and had a goal of £250 to raise to get it printed. We asked Paul a few questions about his experience.

TIFFY AND TOFFY - THE LUCKY PELLET by Sam Wilding Two mice sisters, Tiffy and Toffy, find themselves short of food for the winter and set off on an adventure to find some corn. Along the way they are protected by a lucky pellet as they encounter Bertha Barn Owl and Tommy Tom Cat.

The books are colourful and exciting and about the kind of animals that excite young children. There is also a 'yucky' part to the story which young children will love.

Written by Sam Wilding and illustrated by Scott Wallace the Tiffy and Toffy series of picture stories that are written for children ages 3 to 8. There is also extra fun in the books as the children are asked at the end to help find and count missing items across the book's pages.

The Ancient Exile by Clare Wilson "Tom opened his eyes and looked around the clearing. The sun was beginning to set, and beneath the trees there was a warm emerald glow. Slowly he leaned back his head, staring at the canopy above him, enjoying the moment and basking in the warm evening’s remaining sunshine. He loved living in Cairn Holme.

"Cairn Holme, the place which he had always felt like his home, now was. A year had passed since Tom had found out about his true destiny, since he had been taken back in time to meet his long dead relatives of the past. In that way, it seemed longer ago than one would imagine. It felt like a lifetime since he had first sat in this place with his

ancestor, Torean, trying to learn the ways of the staff. now fourteen, he had spent the past year learning more about the burden he was destined to carry and the evils he would have to defend against."

The Ancient Exile is the second book in the Staff Wielder Series from author Clare Wilson. It is aimed at readers aged 11 to 14.

a haven of gorgeous gemsEvery month we celebrate a local business; this month it’s Jules Healing Gems.

When you walk into Jules Healing Gems in the quiet precinct off Bridge Street Ellon, you are immediately greeted by the larger personality that is Jules Davidson. This bubbly and passionate woman is the namesake and owner of the shop that is a haven for lots of gorgeous gems and other lovely artefacts. Whether your belief in the power of crystals or not is slightly irrelevant, Jules will immediately put you at ease around them and she has a wealth of knowledge on the subject.

The foray into self employment was not something that Jules took lightly. Having a long history in administration and other employment within various industries including Oil & Gas, Jules had long desired to have her own business but the opportunity never arose. But then suddenly in July 2010 she found herself being made redundant primarily due to the recession taking a grip.

It was during this time that she started developing herself personally by expanding on a long term interest that was crystal therapy. She completed a course that allowed her to practice crystal therapy. This knowledge and new found skills Jules utilised on a personal level and among friends. The feedback that she got was tremendous. Her friends and family encouraged her to go ahead and utilise these skills properly and start her own business. She explored this possibility and her research brought her in contact with a supplier that would eventually assist her to initially open her own shop.

There was concern from some that opening a retail unit in the middle of the recession was not sensible but Jules knew in her heart that it was the right thing for her and that she could make a success of it. So in April 2011 Jules Healing Gems opened its doors, with support from her supplier. The first year trading wasn't easy but Jules gave it all she had and steadily

her customer base grew as did the word of mouth. She went fully solo in 2012 and has gone from stength to strength since.

On site there is a fully equipped therapy room which Jules utilises for crystal therapies but also visiting specialists, in various areas including Tarot, Shiatzu, Massage and Refl exology. Due to demand, Jules recently started her own beginners class in crystal therapy which has been fully subscribed and a massive success.

When asked what her piece of advice to other business owners or people thinking of setting up on their own was she said "just follow your gut instinct, don't let others dissuade you if you know in your heart you can do it".

Jules is a breath of fresh air and just being in the shop refreshes you. So why not pop in next time you are in Ellon and see what gorgeous items she has in store or treat yourself to a wee pick me up.

The rest:225g macaroni1 tin of tuna in spring water (drained)50g frozen peas50g frozen sweetcorn1 slice of bread (crumbed)

pro Tips:For a diff erent version swap the peas and

sweetcorn with some caulifl ower, cut into

small fl orets and cooked separately.

You could also swap the tuna for a chopped

grilled chicken breast and make this a

completely diff erent meal.

Get mixing:Place the macaroni, some salt and a little olive oil in a 1 large saucepan, cover with boiling water and cook on a med-high heat.

Drain the tuna, place the frozen veg in a bowl or mug and 2 cover in boiling water to heat. Crumb the bread in a food processor or a bag. Set them all aside.

In a medium saucepan place the butter and fl our. Melt 3 the butter gently and combine with the fl our to form a roux. Take off the heat, add a little of the milk, whisking to combine, then heat to thicken, repeat until all the milk has been added and the sauce is thick enough to coat the back of a spoon.

Add the nutmeg, a little black pepper if desired, all the 4 cheddar and 40g of the parmesan to the sauce, whisk until it is all melted in. Flake the tuna with a fork, add to the sauce and stir in.

When the pasta is cooked through, drain it and return it to 5 the saucepan. Stir in the sauce a bit at a time.

Transfer into a cooking dish, or a couple of smaller oval 6 dishes, top with the breadcrumbs, and then sprinkle the remaining parmesan over the top. Place under a medium grill until the parmesan is browned.
