DEAR COLLECTORSWe care about your well-being
At Canada Post, our priority during these challenging times continues to be the safety and health of our customers, employees and communities, while we work to provide Canadians with the essential services they depend on. Some of the temporary changes made to the stamp program and the way we distribute new issues to postal outlets remain in effect until further notice. Be sure to order your stamps online at canadapost.ca/shop, so you don’t miss out.
Other changes have been made over the short term: • Print versions of Details special edition (Nos. 3 and 4)
and No. 5 were sent to subscr ibers and are available online.
• Stamp unveiling events will proceed in a virtual format. In-person events remain suspended until further notice.
This issue of Details features our Medical Groundbreakers stamps, highlighting six physicians and researchers whose innovative work is more evidence why Canada is a global leader in medical research and treatments that change lives. We’re also revealing our annual fundraising stamp for the Canada Post Community Foundation. The purchase of the stamp allows our customers to contrib-ute directly to grassroots and community programs that benefit Canadian children and youth – initiatives that need our support now more than ever.
Happy (and safe!) collecting,
Jim Phillips, Director, Stamp Services

MEDICAL GROUNDBREAKERSIssue date: September 10, 2020
Booklet of 10 stamps414152111
$920
These five commemorative stamps celebrate six groundbreaking physicians and researchers: Drs. Bruce Chown, Julio Montaner, Balfour Mount, M. Vera Peters, James Till and Ernest McCulloch.
One of the few world leaders in eliminating deadly rhesus (Rh) disease, Dr. Bruce Chown, o.c., mc (1893-1986) established the Winnipeg Rh Laboratory in 1944. His team’s research paved the way for the development and licensing of a protein injection for mothers-to-be that has saved the lives of countless newborns.
Research led by Dr. Julio Montaner, o.c., o.b.c. (b. 1956) has helped transform HIV/AIDS from a
fatal disease to a manageable condition with a near-normal life expectancy. He pioneered Treatment as Prevention®, which has the potential to end the HIV/AIDS epidemic worldwide.
Considered the father of palliative care in North America, Dr. Balfour Mount, o.c., o.q. (b. 1939) advocated for a whole-person approach to care. In 1975, he founded the world’s first comprehensive palliative care service based in a teaching hospital – at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montréal.
Dr. M. Vera Peters, o.c. (1911-93) revolutionized cancer treatment, showing that Hodgkin lymphoma, then considered fatal, could be cured with radiation

therapy. She also showed that for early breast cancer a lumpectomy combined with radiation is as effective as a radical mastectomy – the routine treatment at the time.
Dr. James Till, o.c., o. o nt . (b. 1931) and Dr. Ernest McCulloch, o.c., o. ont. (1926-2011) transformed the world’s understanding of tissue renewal by confirming the existence of stem cells. Their work has important implications for the treatment of many intractable medical conditions.
This issue salutes these remarkable individuals and the many other healthcare professionals and
scientists who have devoted their lives to creating a healthier world – including those working tirelessly to develop diagnostics, treatments and preventions to help respond to the COVID-19 situation.
“This enduring tribute to Canadian health heroes honours their groundbreaking work and brings more awareness to their contributions and discoveries,” said Lissa Foster, Executive Director of the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame. “We can all be immensely proud of the global impact of these pioneering Canadians and our country’s contributions to health, here and in the world.”

CANADA POST COMMUNITY FOUNDATIONIssue date: September 21, 2020
Booklet of 10 stamps414144111

$202
The design for this year’s fundraising stamp issue for Canada Post Community Foundation was most definitely a group effort. After the experts on our Stamp Advisory Committee selected their top three choices, our frontline postal staff were asked to vote for their favourite based on what they had heard from customers about past issues.
The winner, by Subplot Design Inc., features an illustration by Isabelle Arsenault of a diverse (and adorable) community of animals living peacefully in a bountiful tree. It reminds us that, despite our differences, we have the power to come together and enrich each other’s lives.
This ninth annual semi-postal fundraising issue once again allows customers to show they care, as one dollar from the purchase of each booklet of 10 stamps and a donation of 10 cents for each Official First Day Cover go directly to the Foundation to support non-profit organizations that help kids in need.
Thanks to the generosity of stamp users and collectors like you, we’ve raised nearly $9 million over the years for more than 770 local and national groups that bring positive change to Canadian children and youth – and we’ll be awarding another $1.3 million this fall.
