For those of you who are unaware we were asked by The Connection Newspaper to change our

name After much thought and research we have finally reached a decision Your Shirlington

From the beginning one of our goals has always been to let the Shirlington and neighboring com-

munities know about all of the great opportunities events and resources that we have in Shirling-

ton By giving you all of this information our magazine and website are our ways of saying This

is your Shirlington this is what it has to offer

And perhaps more important I wanted to stress that this is in fact your Shirlington Meaning

Shirlington isnt defined by all of the restaurants and businesses but rather by you the commu-

nity the people who live and work here Together we have a voice larger than any single busi-

ness So if you have an idea on what would make your Shirlington an even better place to live

let us know and well do our best to let the rest of the community know about it to lend some sup-

port

find the same great information as before as well as a few new features that will be rolling out in

May so be sure to check back often

I want to thank all of you who have shown your support for us during this transition period Its

been a crazy month but I think that were headed in the right direction and ultimately well be

better for it In fact wersquove used this opportunity to not only try to enhance the look of the maga-

zine but also utilize our local resources as the layout and printing of the magazine is all done in

Shirlington now

15th Annual Walk for the Animals Itrsquos time again for the biggest dog-centered event in Arlington On Saturday May 8th (rain or shine) the Animal Welfare League of Arlington will kick off the 15th Annual Walk for the Animals to help homeless animals in our community Last year with more than 500 walkers and 300 dogs we raised more than $91000 Help us surpass that this year Itrsquos never too early to register and start collecting pledges Please go to the events page at awlaorg

Have you ever noticed that when you truly decide to do something you become relentless about it and pursue it at all costs until you attain it Maybe you wanted to get a college degree buy a certain car or travel to a particular place To decide in Latin (desidre) means to cut off or to not accept any other outcome except success Yet how many Sunday nights have you decided to start exercising only to roll over and hit the snooze button on Monday morning So where is the disconnect between deciding to exercise and actually doing it regularly If you are stuck in a non-exercise rut it means you have no power You know you should exercise but unless you get the momentum going your commitment has no energy -- and neither do you Commitment is your foundation to change Its the difference between knowing and doing Commitment is the foundation for your transformation How can you go from knowing to doing Here are 10 ways 1 Visualize how yoursquoll look and feel in 3 months if you continue on your current path Then visualize in detail how yoursquoll look and feel in 3 months if you begin a regular exercise program today Keep the future in the front of your mind 2 Figure out what matters most to you If you truly want to have a fit body cut out thoughts of the old you The past does not equal the future You can only affect the present decisions you make Your body is an amazing organism that responds to both positive and negative stimulus (exercise or sedentary lifestyle) every day The choice is completely yours 3 Have commitment in areas that matter the most If your health and fitness are a priority to you keep your exercise appointments the same way you would keep a doctors appointment Know you are worth the 20-60 min-utes you take for exercise Keep fitness high on your priority list 4 Catch yourself before you steer away For example if you miss one workout dont make it two Immediately plan to get in your next exercise session regardless of lifes events You will feel so much better if you do When two missed sessions becomes three the weeks then become months making it more challenging to build momen-tum again 5 Look for evidence that your workouts are working Notice that youre moving better feeling less bloated your pants are getting loose and your energy level is going up Continue to reinforce the positive results by engag-ing in regular exercise 6 No matter how far gone you feel get up and get moving It doesnt matter that you havenrsquot exercised in weeks months or years or that you had three slices of pizza and chocolate cake for dinner last night What matters is that every day you have a new opportunity to make improvements in your body Its never too late 7 Commit without judgment This is not a race or a competition This is your life Do your very best at each workout and each meal Discipline is an important success-building component Just the fact that you are getting up and exercising at all is both important and effective 8 Be true to yourself about your lack of commitment You are only fooling yourself if you are justifying missed exercise sessions You make the decision to exercise (or not to) emotionally and then justify it logically Of course your life is full and demanding But wouldnt you be better able to handle all of lifes events in a fit and strong body 9 When you miss an exercise session it affects other people When you dont exercise you feel guilty for the rest of the day Since your mind can only hold one thought at a time that anger and guilt reflect your actions throughout your day Maybe your husband child or co-worker gets to feel or see the end result of your not exercis-ing Maybe it comes out at the drive-thru or in a bar after work On the other hand performing your exercise routine can have very positive effects on your entire day and everyone in it 10 Missing your workout creates negative thoughts in your life This feeling that yoursquove let yourself down grows and pushes your energy level down with it Some people get so far pushed down that they need medication Coming back to your senses and getting your body moving is always the positive way to turn your body and life around You have options to live your life in the present or in a story filled with excuses Exercise moves you closer to leading a fulfilled life Get unstuck today Get rid of the blame and the fault and become the cause rather than the effect of your life Choose to express your good genes and be responsible for your own body Life is a conscious choice or an unconscious accident Bring your commitment to the conscious level Remember that what you resist persists Commitment is a matter of choice practice practice and practice Think about what exercise can do for your life When you want to quit stay It builds character and will help your body -- and life -- transform Commitment to exercise is a practice Share it with someone and help them get fit too



―My store has always done very well said Mason ―but Irsquove taken a hit at my first store and I adjusted Being a small business has allowed her to make those adjustments to quickly cut down when needed in order to still come out on top ―It has been a fun experience to see my vision come out just as I imagined she said claiming the most fun about opening your own store is being able to decorate and create it the way you see it

Mason used to think that a Shirlington location would be too close to her Alexandria store but she quickly changed her mind when she saw how the village expanded and was in need of this type of boutique She has been a local resident for seven years living in Heatherlea condos and eventually buying a home in the Claremont neighborhood where she currently resides She is a member at the Energy Club and feels like Shirlington is her own kitchen with all the restaurants to choose from Open-ing this type of shop in Shirlington gives people the chance to make a day out of visiting the village ―You can eat shop and go to the movieshellipitrsquos perfect said Mason ―I love that is has developed into a little bit of everything without being everything

Mason opened her first store in 2005 in Alex-andria VA Both stores offer the same brands and styles but it is a rare occasion that you will find the same clothing at both locations ―I keep different merchandise in both stores so people can go back and forth between the two she says ―90 of everything in one store is different from what I have in the other store Rather than seeing it as two separate stores she sees it as expanding her floor space and her favorite part of the job is the shopping She loves to shop in her own store and help others put their outfits together

Mason knows a thing or two about fashion having grown up all around the United States ―I call Atlanta home but Irsquove been all over the country Living in so many places has given her the chance to see the different trends that take place around the country allowing her to bring it to our very own village here in Shirling-ton In fact Mason has just started designing her own clothing line called Periwinkle It is a small line that has started with dresses and skirts and she hopes to spend more time on expanding the line over the summer

Many people would stray away from opening a new business while the economy is in its cur-rent state But Mason believes it to be a myth that everything is failing She focused on open-ing a new store and seeing this economy as a buyers market perfect for expanding

So your 1040 is filed and you are now anxiously waiting for your refund What do you plan on doing with it Go on that long-awaited cruise get a new set of golf clubs or buy that widescreen TV yoursquove had your eye on There are so many ways you could spend your refund but there are other alternatives to consider According to the Internal Revenue Service over 75 percent of American taxpayers received a federal tax refund with the average around $2500 Itrsquos what you do with your refund now that may create a better financial future for you and your family Instead of spending your refund this year consider contributing to an Individual Retirement Ac-count (IRA) setting up a college savings fund for a child or paying down credit card debt These options will help improve your financial situation First on your list of priorities might be paying down any high-interest credit card debts you have incurred By paying only the minimum each month you may be paying just the interest (or less) on the debt and little or nothing towards the principal Paying down the debt can help free up additional money for other important financial needs If debt is not a problem your tax refund could provide you an excellent opportunity to contribute to an existing IRA or establish a new one For the 2010 tax year you can contribute up to $5000 to an IRA If you are 50 years or older by December 31 2010 you can add an additional $1000 to the account Making a tax-deductible contribution to a traditional IRA is an option if you are not participating in an employer-sponsored retirement plan or if you are participating your Adjusted Gross Income falls within eligibility guidelines A Roth IRA may be a better choice if you are eligible to contrib-ute Contributions to a Roth IRA are not tax deductible However qualified distributions are re-ceived free from federal income tax Your refund could also be used to contribute to your childs college savings There are simple and affordable options you can take advantage of today including tax-advantaged savings vehicles to help you reach your college savings goal One thing to remember after yoursquove decided the fate of this yearrsquos refund the check you received is not a windfall but the return of an interest-free loan you provided the government Regardless of the pleasure you may get from receiving a large check each tax year adjusting the amount withheld by the government to reduce the amount of future refunds may be an appropriate course You might not get a refund in April but there may be more money in each paycheck to contribute to a savings account or IRA or pay down debt throughout the year Take some time to consider your options before making the down payment on that big purchase The earlier you start saving for your future the more you may have during your retirement If you have questions about these options and others you owe it to yourself to contact a financial ser-vices professional that you know and trust Your financial future may depend on it

Although Tequila was tiny she wasnrsquot tiny enough to escape the land-

lordrsquos notice Her family brought her to the shelter because they had

moved to anapartment that didnrsquot allow pets Chihuahuas are popular

dogs in urban areas but we found a significant problem in Tequilarsquos

health exam She tested positive for heartworm disease

Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal condition caused by

parasitic worms living in the arteries of the lungs and occasionally in the

right side of the heart of dogs cats and other species of mammals

Dogs and cats of any age or breed aresusceptible to infection Heart-

worm is spread by mosquitos that bite an infected animal and then the

mosquito bites another animal and the infective larvae enter through

the bite wound Options for preventing heartworm infection in both

dogs and cats include daily and monthly tablets and chewables

monthly topical and a six-month injectable product available

only for dogs Prevention is safe easy and inexpensive

Treatment for heartworm disease can be expensive and is not always

successful depending on the severity of the disease Because of the

Leaguersquos Woody and Mickey Healthy Pet Fund we can treat shelter ani-

mals for medical needs that go beyond routine treatment Tequila was

a good candidate for treatment because her disease was not very ad-

vanced and she was only five years old We sent her to a local veterinar-

ian for treatment and then to a foster home for recovery After treat-

ment exercise should be limited to leash walking for one to two months

This decreases the risk of partial or complete blockage of blood flow

through the lungs by dead worms Because prevention is so easy and

treatment both expensive and hard on the animal all dogs in our area

should be on a heartworm preventative medication year round Ask your

veterinarian about this lifesaving medicine After spending two months in

her foster home Tequila returned to the shelter and was adopted

quickly Her new family reports that she is healthy and happy Because

of $1150 provided by the Woody and Mickey Healthy Pet Fund Tequila

can enjoy a long life Please help other shelter pets overcome treatable
