Braids, streaks of bold color and «undone-hair,” with that lived in texture, are on trend for the sea-son. Texture, volume and movement can be created in the hair at Estilo Salon with an ARROJO AMERICAAN WAVE. We combine soft tools for that fashion forward look. Clients with all hair

types are eligible. However, this service is not suitable for hair highlighted beyond 25 percent. Accordingly, a consultation is recommended prior to the service. Texture and movement can also be created in the hair with ReFinish an amazing product by ARROJO that is also a dry shampoo. PriMP, another ARROJO favorite, is a great humidity defense hairspray and is great for braiding. Without ever getting crunchy or stiff, it adds hold, texture and grip to strands binding them together. PriMP makes hair extra responsive to heat-tools, so you can shape waves quickly and easily. Wild geranium, lemongrass and aloe vera, PriMP provides an effective humidity defense shield so looks last all day from the effects of the Iowa humidity. Lush lashes and bold brows are always on trend. Looking for more lashes, opt for lash extensions at Estilo. This season makeup is natural beauty, a dewey complexion with a hint of color highlighting the cheek bone and eyelids. Lips are a natural base, ultra matte and super moisturizing. A Second look for summer is bolder for eyes and lips. Orange and corals are perfect for this season. No stranger to the industry, business owner, Cindy Landa opened Estilo Salon and Day Spa 13 years ago. Estilo is one of Des Moines top celebrated salons, with numerous awards such as, One of the top 200 salons in the industry many years in a row, one of the top salons by Salon Industry Magazine, an industry publication and one of Des Moines’ Best by numerous publications. “We pride our business on strong work ethic and excellent education,” says Landa. “In today’s busy world, it is nice and convenient to have all your beauty needs taken care of in one location. Atmosphere is equally important in today’s world, and we feel you will be relaxed in our salon. We go above and beyond to bring the best to Des Moines. I believe, as a locally owned business, Des Moines deserves the best.” Each year top designers from the very best companies like ARROJO, Goldwell, Aquage, Eminence and Bare Minerals come to train our staff on the latest tech-niques and styles from around the world. Estilo designers also travel to New York, Chicago, San Antonio and Min-neapolis each year for additional training further enhancing the staff’s expertise. Confluence Brewing Company is a microbrewery in Des Moines. We invite you to stop by our 155-person

capacity taproom to try our beer, enjoy the views from our deck and appreciate with us where good things come together. About us: After years of hobby brewing and an increasingly ardent interest in brewing as a profession — including countless brewery tours and immersion in local and online brew-ing interest groups — John Martin and fellow home brewer and co-founder Ken Broadhead launched Confluence Brewing in 2012. John left his construction management day-job to pursue Confluence and his passion for beer making full time. The brewery is itself a confluence of John and Ken’s love for Iowa and craft beer. The result is a microbrewery that shares Iowa’s at-tributes of honesty, humility, hard work and a sense of humor. Confluence also has Iowa’s knack for being a delightful surprise to those who actually experience it. Confluence cares about the creativity and craftsmanship that goes into making excellent beer and knows that excellent beer can bring

good friends together. Founded by devotees of the wonderful combination of both art and science in brew-ing, Confluence Brewing believes in the power of beer — the power to make a great gathering more gregarious, a shared meal more mean-ingful, even a bad day better. Confluence brews the hand-crafted beer that Des Moines can call its own. If you savor beer as both a bold taste adventure in the pres-ent and a connection with generations past, Confluence Brewery was founded for you. We’re devoted to creating a confluence of great beer, good friends and wonderful times — and look forward to bringing you together with a pint very soon. Part science lab, part art studio. Ev-eryone who makes beer — whether a novice home brewer or seasoned professional — loves the fascinating combination of art and science involved in crafting beer they can be proud of. We’ve made it easy for you to find our beers. Always ask for Confluence by name and ask your favorite bar and restaurants to serve it. We appreciate your support.

Cheers, Ken and John

New summer classes, workshops and demonstrations fill the roster of educational opportunities at the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden this summer. Against the backdrop of the Garden’s first summer exhi-

bition Food is Pretty, the inaugural education series highlights a range of topics including growing your own food, garden photography and even the launch of a new gardening app for iPhone developed by Ball Horticultural. On July 8 Jennifer Bartley, Ohio-based landscape architect and cofounder of American Potager, will present. Bartley is the author of two books on the sub-ject of designing kitchen gardens from Timber Press, most recently The Kitchen Gardener’s Handbook hailed by the Chicago Tribune as a “bumper crop of fine ideas.” Bartley will speak on the aesthetics of traditional kitchen gardens and how to make a beautiful edible garden part of your everyday life. The lecture begins at 7 p.m. at the Botanical Garden with book signing to follow. Members $15, nonmembers $20. Registration is online at dmbotanicalgarden.com. Local gourmet horticulturist Cathy Wilkinson Barash, author of the award-winning book Edible Flowers, will lead a Lunch and Learn series in concert with local chef and owner of Trellis, Lisa LaValle. Participants will enjoy a lunch inspired by summer garden edibles while learning about what plants to grow and how to use them in a variety of dishes. “We are really excited to bring in so many talented experts,” says Education and Outreach Manager Whitney Bouma. “We want to cultivate a reputation for high-quality, experiential programs that help people become better gardeners.” Attendees can participate in everything from hands-on, edible floral arrang-ing workshops to classes about basic garden maintenance from Botanical Garden horticulturists. “We want to offer a little something for everyone, whether you’re a new or experienced gardener,” says Bouma. The Botanical Garden’s leadership has a bold vision to become a central player in the cultural, education and scientific communities of Greater Des Moines and to engage its increasingly diverse community in the world of plants. The Botani-cal Garden’s progress caught the attention of green industry giant Ball Horticul-tural as it looked for locations to launch its new GrowIt! gardening application. “Our goal is to launch this version in 12 markets across the country and Des Moines seemed like a natural fit,” said Seth Reed, one of the developers of the new app. “We see botanical gardens as a great opportunity to help build the app’s audience.” The launch will take place at the Botanical Garden on July 29 at 5 p.m. Grow-It! is an iPhone application that helps users identify plants best suited for their area through crowdsourced, news-feed style technology. “It validates our idea that we need to find an innovative way to connect to the next generation of gardeners,” said Reed. The Botanical Garden is in the midst of a rebirth as construction continues on new outdoor gardens built as part of a multi-phase capital campaign. With a growing staff and expanding footprint, the Botanical Garden will launch addi-tional new programs for children and youth in early fall. Fundraising is ongoing for the $6.2 million We Are a Garden Now campaign, which seeks to raise money for the development of two additional gardens, expansion of the Botanical Gar-den’s curatorial and educational programs and its endowment. The Botanical Garden is located at 909 Robert D. Ray Drive and open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., except major holidays. More information about registration for programs and upcoming events can be found at dmbotanicalgarden.com.

Dale Valley Vineyard and Winery

A long, long time ago, in a small valley in the middle of the new

state of Iowa was soon to be the community of Dale. It was a vision that the founder had, as he crested the hill on his horse where the now present inter-section of Wagon Wheel Road and 285th Street exists. As he looked into the valley, he saw a river for power and water, lush hills of natural grasses and timber to build. “This is where the new Lonsdale Woolen Mill will be,” he decided, pointing to the west, down in the valley and proclaiming to his Ohio partner Mr. France.

As a visionary, an entrepre-neur must see those things that be not, as though they were, just as John Lonsdale had in the 1860s. That continues, as his great, great, great, grand-daughter continues the vision, by using the one-room schoolhouse he had built as a tasting room and gift shop for their award-winning wines from Dale Valley Vineyard and Winery.

Though we are small, we define our products by listening to our customers and fashioning wines around their palettes.

Please take a moment and celebrate the wonderful unspoiled landscape — beautiful vistas that John recognized more than 150 years ago — and delight in his granddaughter’s wines.

We are small, but our hearts are as big as the vistas you will experience. Amenities that we provide include: ample parking, covered and conditioned space, many

options for events small or large, wedding showers to anniversary parties, seating hun-dreds. Relaxing views facing the western Iowa sky. Spend an afternoon where you can forget time. The only missing piece to this setting is you and your good friends.

Rock-n-Row Adventures has been attracting tubing and camping enthusiasts

central Iowa at the junction of Highway 175 and the Iowa River, not much more than two to three hours from any major city in Iowa. We are the original, largest and most popular tubing resort in the central Midwest. The Rock-n-Row Campground and River is a PG-13 atmosphere with ages ranging from 5 to 75 years. A large percentage of these fun-loving people have been with us for a number of years, so we are one big, happy family. Some of the highlights of Rock-n-Row Adventures include tubing and camping, of course, campfire cooking, live rock bands, DJs, bikini contests, volleyball, beer pong, flippie cup, bag toss, Frisbee games, bike trails and a state-ranked nine-hole golf course located just up the road two miles. Electrical hook-ups go very fast, so make your res-ervations early. We run a kid’s special during the Iowa State Fair. August is a good time for the kids to go on a tubing adventure. The water is lower and slower, allowing the smaller kids to explore and find the treasures of the river. This weekend also tends to be appealing to the grandparents as well. They like to party a little, too. On average, a tubing adventure takes three to four hours. We shuttle your group up river, and you float back down to the Rock-n-Row campground. There is no catching another bus, and you may stay out on the river as long as you like as long as you are back before night fall. The band will play from 7-11 p.m. Advance reserva-tions are recommended.

The American Gothic House is famous as the backdrop of Grant Wood’s 1930 painting Amer-ican Gothic. Since completion, the painting has become an American icon and the model for a countless number of parodies. The American Gothic House is located in Eldon, a small

town in southeast Wapello County. The original portion of the house that contains the two Gothic windows was built in 1881-82 by Catherine and Charles Dibble. It is unknown why the Dibble family chose to include Gothic windows in the gables of their home. It is believed that the windows were purchased through the Sears and Roebuck catalog, but why they chose a window that is more associated with church architecture no one knows for sure. One thought is among the struggles of life and work, this was one way that the Dibbles were able to add a little beauty to their everyday lives. This beautifully crafted house still stands where it was first built. In the 1960s and early 1970s, there were discussions about moving the house to a more convenient location, but no action was taken. With its listing on the National Register

State Historical Society of Iowa by Carl E. Smith (1991), and the addition of the American Gothic House Center (2007), the house is secure in its original location. Please call for information or to

The National Sprint Car Hall of Fame & Museum in Knoxville is currently hosting the “Salute to Champion Steve Kinser” special exhibition, honoring the 20-time World of Outlaws (WoO) champion and the 12-time Knoxville Nationals winner.

The exhibit follows similar displays honoring Tony Stewart (2011), Jeff Gordon (2012) and Mario Andretti (2013).

The “Salute to Champion Steve Kinser” features seven non-winged and winged sprint cars, including at least one from each of the five decades in which he has raced, the 1970s into the 2010s. The 1980 and ’86 Knoxville Nationals-winning cars are amongst those on display, in addition to his Superman-themed sprint car. In addition to the cars, the special exhibition includes trophies, driver uniforms, original artwork and other memorabilia related to the “King of the Outlaws.”

In addition to the “Salute to Champion Steve Kinser” special exhibition, the Donald Lamberti National Sprint Car Museum currently houses another 20 sprint cars, “big cars,” championship dirt cars, midgets cars and super-modified stock cars. The John Gerber and Bob Trostle Garage re-creations are semi-permanent displays, while there are also temporary photographic salutes to Parnelli Jones and Kenny Schrader.

Don’t forget summer is the time when your skin is most vulnerable. Using sun protection daily is crucial to preventing future skin damage, sun spots, and even cancer. This means wearing a hat or visor, sunglasses, and remembering to lather up the sunscreen. Even body and facial lotion with added SPF coverage is better than nothing. Knowing this, you may instinctively reach for last year’s bottle of sun-screen from the bathroom cupboard, but wait! After a year (sometimes even six months) sunscreens lose their effectiveness. What was once SPF 50 is now more like SPF 15. The active chemicals in sunscreen start to degrade, and this can also mean increased chances for breakouts and skin irritation. So throw out last year’s sunscreen and add it to your shopping list! Choosing a sunscreen:
