President’s PATTER

In this newsletter you will see how your HOA is changing, and for your good.

We have been working hard to keep you abreast of the current events. What is most encourag-

ing is the help from within the association. As you will read about a successful Christmas party for our children and grandchildren with the help of volunteers, all from our association, this helps allow the board to work on other items that can benefit the homeowners.

Your board is working hard to keep our members in-formed about events within our association. As you will read about a new social Facebook group that can answer questions you may have about issues that relates to only our homeowners, again ran totally by your neighbors. Volunteerism, as you will read in this newsletter is the future of our HOA. Many of the things that volunteers could help with require minimum amount of time such as stuffing mailers, putting stamps on envelopes just to name a few. To make this easier I will appoint a person or per-sons to handle all our volunteer projects. This person will be a contact person to put into place where a volunteer is needed. If you would like to be this person please reach out to me so we could get this appointment completed soon for our HOA. Enjoy this newsletter and remember it is being provided by the advertisers, so please let them know how you heard about them.

Contact information is Ken Hagenbaumer, email: [email protected] or text 815-482-1986.”

Sincerely,Ken Hagenbaumer, NWTHA Board President

Publisher’s GREETING

Well this has certainly been a disap-pointing winter, if you’re like me and look forward to snow sports. Ski trips have been rescheduled and sledding with the kids has turned into ice skat-ing indoors.

There haven’t been snowmen to look at or even enough snow to build forts with. My children have become rest-less and are looking for alternative winter adventures.

So, here’s what we have found... winter walks in 40-de-grees are actually quite enjoyable. And the opportunity to ride bikes in January has made going to the local coffee-shop even more fun. The outlet malls are hopping in the warmer weather and I believe I have missed out on some great deals in years passed since it was too cold to shop.

So am I happy Punxatawny Phil called for an early spring? Not necessariily but it has certainly encouraged me to find new adventures in the winter months. What about you? Are you a fan of warmer weather? Please share your stories and photos with us!

In case you’re new to the neighborhood, welcome! The North Wheatland Township Homeowners Association NEIGHBOR NEWS publishes four times a year plus there is a January directory. If you have any suggestions, please contact me at [email protected].

Thanks for reading!Sheryl Theisen, Publisher, hYperstrand Marketing Inc.

Neighborhood UPDATESNWTHA Social Group on FacebookOver the past few weeks Ashley Zinn, Carrie Sher-

man and Amanda Chack have created the NWTHA Social Group to help all of our members better connect through social media. If you haven’t already joined this private group, please ask to join. Simply

search for “NWTHA Social Group” and click on the join box. One of the administrators will approve your request and you join the fun! The hope is that this group will allow us to get to know our neighbors better and share information with each other more efficiently. Feel free to ask questions, offer recommendations for services, organize play dates, share information about local events, or post pictures of some of the natural beauty around our area. So far the group has discussed everything from getting a group rate on septic system services to local police reports to the weath-er! Within the first few days the group was 50 members strong, but we are hoping to reach as many members as possible. The more members we have join, the more conversations will be had and the more useful the page will become. So, once you’ve joined be sure to invite your neighbors to join as well.

Membership RenewalThe current NWTHA membership renewal period has ended, but new memberships are always welcome. If you have a new neighbor, you might mention the homeowner’s association and website: www.NWTHA.com. They can be-

come a member by registering on the website or they can call Barb Angelos, 630-420-0991.

NWTHA Seeks a Welcoming VolunteerNWTHA is looking for someone to call on new residents, welcoming them to the neigh-borhood and introducing them to the asso-ciation. We can provide you with the names and addresses of new residents (about 1 per month). We also have extra copies of news-letters to give them. You do not have to be

on the NWTHA board to volunteer. If you would like to volunteer, contact Ken Hagenbaumer (815-482-1986) or Peter Genualdi (708-370-1272).

Community CONCERNSRoads and Safety ** Important Local Update **

Winter is fading fast and 2016 will be an exciting year for the residents of Wheat-land North. Wheatland Township is on track to open bids for the 2016 Road Program in late March or early April.

The Wheatland North subdivisions being let for bids are: Wheatland View

North, Country View Estates, Sunset Ridge, River Crest and Perkins Ct. Their goal is to “mill and resurface” all these areas as long as the costs remain within the budget. They will also replace the curb where needed and bring all crosswalks and ramps up to the current ADA standards.

They will be bidding a project from Douglas to Leverenz to alleviate the drainage issues in that area. This project should start in the spring. The Road District will be work-ing on drainage projects on Juanita and Meadow this year as well.

The Road District now has the ability to perform traffic and speed studies. Please contact the Road District if you

Page 9: Your Official North Wheatland Township H A · SOCIAL Ashley Zinn 847.452.4845 Carrie Sherman 630.677.7315 ROAD & SAFETY Peter Genualdi 630.355.2194 COMMUNITY Bob Segal 630.961.3849

have a location that could be a candidate for a study.Check out Wheatland Township Road district on Face-book for day to day updates. Information is also available at www.wheatlandtownship.com.

Traffic and Speed Study Recently Performed ~Submitted by Kevin Martinish, Supervisor

The Road District performed a traffic and speed study on Meadow drive from 2-16-2106 through 2-24-2016. The direction of traffic was studied East bound from Naper-ville/Plainfield Rd.

The results were interesting: On work days (Mon-Friday) the traffics counts averaged 110-115 cars a day. On the weekends the traffic counts were a little over 120 cars a day. The top speed during the week was 32 mph and on the weekends it was 38 mph. From 2-16 through 2-19 we had the sign set to display the oncoming speed of the vehicles. From 2-19 through 2-23 we had the display turned off, but the sign was still collecting data. There was a reduc-tion in speed by approximately 20% when the sign dis-played the driver’s speed which is expected. At this time the “work week” traffic does not show a large enough increase to justify adding signage or developing additional ordinances for the area. Please contact me with any further questions.

Wheatland Township Annual Town Meeting All registered voters in Wheatland Township are invited which will start at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, at the Township Office Building, 4232 Tower Court. After a moderator is selected,

year-end financial reports are presented for approval at this meeting. Also, residents can ask questions, discuss problems, and make motions that direct the Town Board to take specific actions – as long as those actions are legal and approved by a majority of those voting on the mo-tion. Township officials will likely be there to help answer questions.

NOTE: One appropriate question or topic of discussion might be the Township Highway Commissioner’s plans to repair and repave subdivision roads in our NWTHA area. Another topic might be current plans to resolve drainage ditch problems.

Brush Pick Up 2016According to the Wheatland Township Highway Department,

the first 2016 brush pick- up is scheduled for the week of April 11-15. Thereafter, the pick-ups will be during the weeks of May 9-13, June 13-17, September 12-16 and October 17-21. All branches and other brush must be out by the “”curb”” before 7 a.m. on the first day of each designated week. (But it will continue to be picked up into the following week, if necessary.) Place the brush as neatly as possible – cut ends toward the street and parallel to each other.

Regarding to what is acceptable, how to prepare it and what is not accepted please refer to: http://www.wheat-landtownship.com/road-district/highway-resources

2016 aCKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Please Be Sure to Support Our Advertisers Each year we remind you that the NWTHA wouldn’t be able to pro-vide you our quarterly newsletter or our annual members’ directory without the important support of each publication’s advertisers. The advertisers help pay for the printing and mailing of these publica-tions. Therefore, we ask that you acknowledge their support of the NWTHA by giving them your business whenever possible. This year, thanks to the hard work of the newsletter and directory editors, these two publications include many familiar advertisers, as well as several new ones. Please look over each newsletter and the directory care-fully. We’re sure that you will find many service providers you may well need sooner or later.

2016 Directory Scheduled for February Distribution. All NWTHA members should have received their copy of the 2016 Directory. Hopefully you already have it, because it was scheduled to be mailed in mid Febru-ary (if all went according to plan). This year’s edition continues to be 60 informa-tive pages, plus the cover pages, including

members’ names, addresses and phone numbers, as well as many numbers to call when there is an emergency or when you simply need information about township, county, school district, and other

services. Also, there is lots of info about a wide variety of community services and attractions, along with subdivision maps and a copy of our NWTHA bylaws. In addition, this year you will find four new directory pages that provide info on voting in 2016, the Wheatland Township Highway Department’s brush pick-up schedule, as well as info on the right-aways associated with subdivision roads and drainage ditches, and a township policy related to your mail boxes. And, of course, there are all the ads, which hopefully will direct you to the home and personal service providers you may need -- such as carpet and hardwood floor installer Peter Genualdi (also our NWTHA vice president), realtors Dan Firks (a NWTHA member) and Becky Fabian, an electrician and plumber, a heating and air contractor, siding/windows/roof special-ists, optometrist (and NWTHA member) Alan Knotek, home care service provider Tom Hymers (also an NWTHA member), a con-crete driveway contractor (NWTHA member Ben Drendel), septic field caretakers, well and sump pump specialists, a chiropractor, our NWTHA attorney, Traverso’s and Pieroni’s Pizza, A&G Rental, a wa-ter conditioning specialist, The Growing Place (owned and operated by NWTHA members Carol and Rich Massat), and more. If you haven’t received your copy of the 2016 Directory, please con-tact Directory Editor Owen Wavrinek at 630-800-1017.

If you’re interested in advertising in the newsletters, be sure to contact Publisher Sheryl Theisen at hYperstrand Marketing Inc. at 630.940.7920.

A Bit of HISTORYThis new column is devoted to the history of both Wheatland Township and our homeowners association. The author/writ-er is Owen Wavrinek, one of the founders and a past president of the NWTHA, who lived on Meadow Lane in Country View Estates for 34 years (1973-2007). The cur-rent editor of the annual NWTHA Directory, he also served on the Indian Prairie School Dist. 204 Board of Education for 21 years

(1980-2001), which resulted in his being honored as the namesake of Owen Elementary School, which opened in September 2003.

It may be hard to imagine when you drive around today’s version of Wheatland Township, but not too long ago the terrain was a lot different. That’s because almost all of the township was agricul-tural, until the 1960s, when developers (e.g., the Frys and Hectors) started building homes in NWTHA subdivisions (and in a few other developments to the west and south, including Wheatland South, Andermann Acres and Pheasant Ridge). In fact, Wheatland’s farm-land was reputed to have some of the richest soils in the country. Now, however, instead of thousands of acres of corn, soybeans and hay, dairy farms, plenty of hogs and chickens, and a population of 1,100 in 1880, there are thousands of people (more than 81,000 in 2010) and thousands of houses, other dwellings, and businesses.

There are still a few working farms in the township (maybe six), as well as vacant land that is leased and farmed (planted) with cash

crops such as corn and soybeans. But most of Wheatland is now urban, with few (if any) remaining gravel (let alone dirt) roads, and even fewer farm animals.

One of the farms from our historic past is the Thomas Clow farm-stead that is illustrated on the bottom of our annual NWTHA direc-tory’s front cover. Currently owned and being developed by the Forest Preserve District of Will County (FPDWC), the now 268-acre

Riverview Farm-stead Preserve is located just south of the intersection of Book Road and 111th Street.

According to the FPDWC’s newsletter (The Citizen), the Clow family farm was settled in the 1850s, when it was one of the first farms in

Wheatland Township. For the next 120 years, three generations of Clow descendants lived and prospered on the land. Then, in 1994, it was purchased by the Forest Preserve District -- to preserve its agricultural history and to connect it to the DuPage River Green-way.

The restored structures on this site include an 1850s settlement house (also referred to as a community or neighborhood center); a two-story Greek Revival farmhouse that was built in 1868 using limestone mined from local quarries in Wheatland Township; and a 4,914-square-foot (117’ long x 42’ wide x 44’ high) timber-frame barn that dates to 1890. That barn, one of the largest in Will County, was used for housing livestock, milking, calving, and stor-ing hay and grain. NOTE: The City of Naperville officially designated the Thomas Clow limestone house as a historic landmark on November 5, 1991.

The Forest Preserve District stabilized these three structures for preservation, security and educational purposes, beginning with a “barn raising” in 2001. Then, in 2010-11 the site was developed to include parking, a picnic shelter, a canoe/kayak launch and a one-mile portion of the DuPage River Trail. And as a result of more development work during the last few years, visitors can now walk inside the historic structures and learn more from seven outdoor exhibits that tell the story of the farm, the Clow family, and the his-tory of Wheatland Township.

In addition to preserving an important part of our area’s agricul-tural history, Riverview Farmstead protects prairie habitat and in-cludes about 500 plant species. For example, the Preserve includes a farm field that was converted into a pristine prairie -- as a labor of love -- by two 20th-Century Wheatland residents -- David Kropp and Ray Schulenburg -- who are pioneers in native prairie restora-tion.

If you’d like to see and learn more about the Riverview Farmstead, a free tour for all ages is scheduled from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Satur-day, April 30. An interpreter will share stories of the Clow family and the farmstead’s growth from an early settlement to a com-mercial farm of more than 200 acres. Registration is required by calling 815-886-1467 by Thursday, April 28. (This FPDWC program takes place outdoors on crushed limestone trails and indoors where there are some uneven surfaces. So, anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service to participate in this program should mention their request when registering, or submit a request online -- www.reconnectwithnature.org -- no later than 48 hours before the program.)
