PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Time to Resume and Renew – Lynn Ankney, President

Did you miss us? The two-month break from June and July newsletters felt too long, so your OIPA Board of Directors has decided that this next

fiscal year will see 10 newsletters (omitting January and July). Faithful readers will recall we produced 9 issues this past year in an attempt to balance production costs and stem volunteer fatigue.

Even though we haven’t had newsletters the past two months, we’ve been busy. You can flip to page 4 to get the particulars captured in OIPA Secretary Bart Goldberg’s ever-amusing and informative Board meeting minutes, but I wanted to highlight two important topics: a huge thank you to some special residents and an even huger reminder to ALL readers.

Have you noticed the improvement in the green spaces along Irving Park Road? I want to send a heartfelt and public thank you to all of the residents who enthusiastically contacted me after my plea in the April newsletter to launch an “adopt a green space” program. We have all but two of the 7 “mural” planters and 19 in-ground beds adopted for the 2017 season. Our “Green Team” consists of families, groups of neighbors, and students and we continue to communicate with each other to share tips and results. The picture featured below is just one example “after” photo. Thank you to the Yoest family for caring for this in-ground bed outside Dunkin Donuts. Needless to say, this experiment in guerrilla gardening was a great success and we’ll consider 2017 the inaugural year of the adopt a green space program.

And now for the housekeeping portion of this missive. It’s August and that means everyone’s annual OIPA membership expires on the 31st (unless you joined since 5/1/17, then you’re good through 3/1/18). Whether you’re renewing for the 20th time or joining for the first, we ask everyone to use this online form to sign up and pay www.oldirvingpark.com/join-us/. Having our members join or renew online is easier for everyone and allows us to more easily and accurately manage our member data, such as birthdays and anniversaries. For the few who are unable to pay online, please find the paper form on page 34 to complete.

Regardless of how you renew or join OIPA, we ask you to do it this month. Why is membership so important? Dues go a long way to finance the publication of this newsletter and only current members receive a copy (delivered to their door, by our tireless army of volunteers). Also, elected officials take notice of community organizations, like ours, with strong membership. It’s one sign of a caring, engaged community. You know, the kind filled with people willing to put on garden gloves and take care of a public green space for the good of their community.

OIPA BOARD MEETING REPORT

Attendees: Lynn Ankney, Howard Silver, Meredith O’Sullivan, Adrienne Chan, Colleen Kenny, and Bart Goldberg

The Board meeting commenced at 7:05pm.

Treasurer’s Reports: The Treasurer’s Report for May was unanimously approved.

Adoption of a New Fiscal Year: The fiscal year for OIPA has historically been from September 1 to August 31 of the next year. Our ace accountant Howard Silver had determined that we could shorten the end of our fiscal year by two months without causing any real difficulty. The advantage of this is that by ending our year at the end of June our income and expenses would more closely match the schedule of our activities (in particular the start of our billing year for dues, etc). The Board unanimously voted to approve the adoption of the new fiscal year (July 1 to June 30) and authorized Howard to file a “short year” return for the period of September 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017.

Future Membership Dues: The Board discussed at some length revisions to the schedule of annual dues that our membership is good enough to pay to support this vital organization. It was decided that we wanted to keep the increases to a minimum so the rate for Seniors was increased only a dollar from $14 to $15, and the rate for the non-seniors (except those out of our boundaries, which require mail and therefore pay a higher rate) will increase from $20 to $25. We had some fun creating a couple of new levels of membership to allow members who want to generously pay even more to have the freedom to do

just that (Don’t ever let it be said that OIPA took away your freedoms). At the mid-level fee of $75 one can become a “Good Neighbor” and enjoy some benefits that have not been fully determined, but it may involve being able to put your pet’s or child’s birthday on the calendar in the newsletter (priceless!) and possibly receiving a gift such as an OIPA hat or tote bag. At the nearly absurd contribution level of $150 you would become a “Neighborhood All-Star” and in addition to the other things mentioned above, you would get admission for two to an exclusive OIPA party. More details about these two new levels will follow soon.

Advertising: Colleen Kenny has graciously (and possibly foolishly) agreed to be the person in charge of our advertising for the newsletter. She is trying to drag both the Board (Good luck with that) and our membership into the modern era with new practices for billing and the submission of ads. She has deep convictions that the internet is not a passing fad and is investigating some new sites for payments, etc. The Board discussed the advertising rates and agreed to add an additional $25 charge for newsletter advertising when an ad that will run for only one month is placed (to defray the costs of setting up the content).

Banners: The New Wave of Board Members is really asserting itself, as Adrienne Chan has now taken over the banner program from President Ankney. It seems strange to say that since up until now the very successful banner program has been strictly her domain. But with a new round of banners on the horizon and with our overworked President needing

Summarized Minutes of the General Meeting on April 10, 2017 — Bart Goldberg, Secretary

OIPA BOARD MEETING REPORT

to concentrate on all of her other duties (and so exhausted she had to take a vacation) it was time for a change, and in Adrienne we trust. The Board decided on a policy to offer repair of any damaged banners at cost. As to the new banners, they are being planned for spring of 2018. Changes to the design and pricing of them are under discussion.

Website: Prior issues of the newsletter continue to be added to the website, one month at a time. The advertising rates for the website banners were also discussed. Some students from NEIU had prepared some nice maps for us of the OIPA boundaries, and it was decided that a zoning map that they had prepared for us will be added to our website (for purposes of amusement only – you can’t hold us to the accuracy of the information). We really appreciate their work. Thanks!

IPHS Century Plaque Program: The Historical Society is now ready to once again begin awarding Century House Plaque’s to qualified homes. They have set a very modest fee for processing and approving the request (and the plaque itself) in the amount of $25. However, if you are not a member of OIPA the fee is $50, and in that event the fee includes one-year of membership in OIPA. If you are interested please contact Matt Krecun at [email protected].

Zoning:

4300 W. Berteau: After consulting with the neighbors on the block (where an apartment building had been demolished by the City) it was determined that they favored leaving the zoning of this property as RS-3, so no effort will be made to downzone this property to RS-2.

4301 W. Montrose: President Ankney reported that at the most recent administrative hearing concerning

this problem property a default judgment and a fine of $1,040 had been entered against the business owner and that since that time the owner has vacated the property. Citations have since been issued for failure to remove trash and weeds.

Future Meetings: There will be no general meeting again in July or August, and the next general meeting of the Association will be on September 11, 2017 at 7 p.m. back in our usual location in the basement of the Irving Park Baptist Church at 4401 W. Irving Park Road. Have a Fine Summer!

The meeting adjourned at 8:10pm.

IRVING PARK GARDEN CLUB

Irving Park Garden Club members have been enjoying the summer with two of our favorite programs, both of which drew crowds. In June, we appreciated the

hospitality and gardens of two members, Mary Jo Pesut and Madelyn Ryan, during our Midsummer Night Stroll wine and cheese social. In July, we celebrated the efforts of ten members as they opened their yards for our annual garden walk, which included a stop at the Merchant Park Community Garden as well.

The gardens on display in July belonged to Sarada Amani, Mary Lou Budnick, Mary Foster, T. J. and Claudia Hine, Denise Hlad, Tina Norris and Brian Tijan, Bette and Jim Reetzke, Tom Starck, Carol and Bob Szalacha, and Dr. Martin and Angie Yorath. Each was unique and showcased the individual styles of their owners.

Two Ways to Get Your Hands Dirty Now in August, we are offering our members two ways to get their hands dirty. For our Hands-On events Saturday, August 19, Mike Basile will gather with a group to do a clean up at the Tripp Garden to prevent it from becoming too overgrown.

Meanwhile, a second group will gather at Maureen Taylor’s home as mosaic artist Laura Marie Sanchez teaches us how to create a mosaic garden stone for our yards. Members have been collecting broken china, sea glass, ceramic tile, seashells, dog tags, and other memorabilia for their personal projects.

For more information, contact Claudia Hine at [email protected] and keep track of the garden club by liking us on Facebook.

IRVING PARK HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Just the FAQs

Why do some Old Irving Park houses have a plaque on them?Houses with a small round plaque (Tier I) indicate that it confirmed to be more than 100 years old. Houses with an additional oval plaque (Tier II) features the actual year the house was built, found through research done on the property.

Why put up plaques at all?Because the neighborhood has more than 800 houses over 100 years old, and the Irving Park Historical Society wanted to do something to recognize that an old house has just as much if not more worth than a new house in a neighborhood full of old houses with historical significance. It’s just a something thing we thought would set them apart, and to honor their owners and residents for the investments they made over the years. It also serves to promote dialogue about preservation, society, community, economics, and collective history of one small area in one large city.

Does the designation restrict us from doing anything to our house? No! You can do whatever you want to do to your house. These plaques are strictly Irving Park Historical Society and are not city/state/national recognitions. They signify nothing but that your house is architecturally and historically significant in the larger context of your community, and that you should be proud to live in such a place.

So it’s an honor, then, to have one?Yes! We think so. Not to mention, the cost is only $25 if you’re an OIPA member; $50 if you’re not a current member (added bonus the Tier II fee includes a one-year OIPA membership).

IRVING PARK HISTORICAL SOCIETY

What if we must move; will a plaque affect a house sale?Well, we like to assume that someone interested in buying an old house prefers a home with a history. We consider the designation a favorable asset. A buyer seeking an old house in the Old Irving Park area, who is interested in its history—is a neighbor we look forward to meeting!

So what’s the process to apply for Tier I and Tier II plaques?Request a Residential Plaque application form from the Irving Park Historical Society. Return the filled out form along with your processing fee that also goes towards your one-year membership in OIPA. Answer as many of the questions as you can. Don’t worry if you can’t answer all of them. Then, we check against our records and see if, in fact, your house is over 100 years old. If it is, we give you a Tier I plaque with a code number on it. That code corresponds with our IPHS records, for future reference. Currently, our Tier II program (eligibility for consideration in our grant program which funds professional research on the history of your house) is inactive.

My Old Irving Park house was featured on a Housewalk before I lived in it. Am I still eligible for a Tier II plaque? You might be, depending on the prior research. You may email us at [email protected], and we’ll get back to you to discuss.

What if my house bears no resemblance to the Victorian beauty it once was?Times change and styles do too. There were houses of all sizes and shapes built here at the turn of the last century. Prominent architects designed many homes in the area, and underneath the awful siding that was once popular in the post-war years might just be a jewel in the rough. If your house is 100 years old, you can still apply for a plaque.

How do we hang our plaques?Included with the delivery of your plaque are instructions and suggestions on where to mount it. The plaque is beautifully cast bronze, although not incredibly heavy.

Must I live in a particular area to qualify for a plaque? You must live within the official boundaries of Old Irving Park; which is, from Pulaski on the east, Addison on the south, Kolmar/CM&StP-Belt Line railroad tracks near Cicero on the west, and Montrose on the north.

I want my house to have a plaque! Where do I find the application? You have a few options:

• You may find the Century House Plaque application form on the OIPA website: www.oldirvingpark.com/house_history.

• Our forms are available on the check-in table at every OIPA monthly meeting.

If you have any questions about this unique program, please email us at [email protected].

We Believe Learning Goes Beyond the Classroom St. Viator 7th grade students Aaliyah Navarro, Emma Jones and Amlin Osiecki had the honor of being invited to participate in the Junior National Young Leader Conference in Washington D.C. These students, and others from all over the country, were nominated for their academic achievements and leadership abilities. Our nation’s capital served as their living classroom for a week’s worth of lessons in personal leadership, goal setting and global and community service.

Summer Camp FunSt. Viator hosted a two-week summer camp that treated students of all ages to a mix of recreational and enrichment activities. Campers painted and bedazzled geometric fish and cats, learned to weave and make jewelry and played basketball. They also explored the north and south ends of magnets, used straws to experiment with force and created original fairy tales. The session closed out with a crowd-pleasing Freeze Pop Friday! Three Brothers Garden, a program of Carlson Com-munity Services, has been selected as a study site by University of Illinois at Chicago Associate

Professor Emily Minor, PhD. Minor and her students will count birds and identify plants and insects to understand whether birds benefit gardeners by eating crop pests and whether certain feature of gardens increase the predation benefits provided by birds. Three Brothers Garden is one of 25 area community gardens in the study. The project is part of an effort by Field Museum researchers to understand how urban community gardens contribute to health, wellbeing and biodiversity in Chicago. To learn more, visit chicagocommunitygardens.weebly.com.

Three Brothers Garden was excited to host a group of middle school and high school youths from Lutheran churches in Minnesota, Georgia and Wisconsin. While staying at Irving Park Lutheran Church, these teens spent six mornings in July helping with repairs and general garden maintenance. The groups were organized by a Lutheran non-profit called Serve Boldly (serveboldly.net). Thank you Serve Boldly adult leaders and teens!

NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS | Carlson Community Services

Speaking of volunteers, what better way to close out the summer than by working in Three Brothers Garden! With tomatoes and cucumbers coming in abundance, we need help harvesting. Please join us every Tuesday evening from 5:30 to 7:30pm through mid-to-late October. The garden is located at 4107 N. Pulaski. Come any time during the harvest and stay as long as you’d like. No experience needed...we’ll show you how. Questions? Contact Rebecca Haneberg at [email protected].

Emily Minor, PhD, (left) has included Three Brothers Garden in a study of community gardens and their impact on health and well-being.

Adult leader Rob from Serve Boldly and Rebecca Haneberg, Garden Committee Co-chair, take a break from weeding.

The mission of Carlson Community Services, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, is to connect the Irving Park community with programs that enrich lives through education, culture and service. For more information or to sign up for our email newsletters, go to www.carlsoncommunityservices.org. Teens from Serve Boldly volunteered at Three Brothers Garden in July.

NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS | Irving Park Community Food Pantry

The Irving Park Community Food Pantry is distributing school supplies to our clients’ children in grades 1 through 12 to ensure they start the school year strong. The program con-

tinues throughout August.

We are in need of loose-leaf paper, spiral notebooks, pocket folders, glue sticks, scissors, rulers, erasers, #2 pencils, crayons (24 pack), markers, colored pencils and pens. We do not want backpacks. We often run low as the month goes on, giving out upwards of 400 bags, so we continue to need supplies.

Donations can be dropped off at: • Irving Park United Methodist Church, 3801 N. Keeler, during Pantry operating hours (9 a.m. to noon, Wednesdays, and 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 8).

• Linnemeyer front porch at 3822 N. Tripp Ave.

• Old Irving Brewing, 4419 W. Montrose Ave.

• Our booth at the Sunday GIPNA Farmers Market on August 6 and 20.

The Greater Chicago Food Depository’s 32nd Annual Hunger Walk Saturday, September 16 Jackson Park (near Hyde Park). Volunteers and friends of the Irving Park Community Food Pantry will be walking the 2-mile course to help raise awareness about hunger in our communities.

The Walk is the Pantry’s biggest annual fund-raising event. To register or donate, visit our Hunger Walk page at www.classy.org/team/124844. You must register by August 28. Entry bibs and t-shirts will be delivered to the Pantry for walkers before the event, and you will have to arrange to pick one up or have it delivered.

Donations to our Walk page go directly to our GCFD account, from which we order foods from their menu at low volume prices. Or you can donate at our web page (www.irvingparkfoodpantry.org) or by mailing a check to the Irving Park Food Pantry at 3801 N. Keeler Ave., Chicago IL 6041. A donation letter is in the mail now.

Thank you to everyone who volunteers and donates for helping us be “Neighbors Helping Neighbors!”

Culver’s Breaks Ground, Binny’s Now Open

I have exciting progress to share regarding the revitalization efforts at Six Corners, just a skip away from Old Irving Park.

On Thursday, July 6, Culver’s broke ground for their first Chicago location at 4939 W. Irving Park Road. With construction underway - the butter burger serving, frozen custard outlet plans to open their doors in November of this year.

Binny’s Beverage Depot, 4901 W. Irving Park Road, spent July working tirelessly to stock their shelves with a wide selection of quality liquor and craft beer. They opened their doors on July 21. If you haven’t been already, make sure to swing by and stock up on your favorites.

Elly’s Pancake House, 4925 W. Irving Park Road, has finished the demolition and in the process of acquiring their permits. Elly’s anticipates finishing the build-out and opening their doors by October of this year.

I am encouraged by the progress made in recent months at Six Corners and am confident the new developments will continue have a ripple effect on the ongoing revitalization efforts in our community.
