§  What are the specific health benefits of smiling? After reading this section, I think you may be asking yourself, “What AREN’T the health benefits of smiling?” That’s because there are so many! Here are a few surprising ones that will make you want to smile more: §  Smiling is a natural pain killer: According to Mark Stibich, Ph.D., of

About.com, “Smiling is a natural drug.” How? Says Dr. Stibich, “Studies have shown that smiling releases endorphins, natural pain killers, and serotonin. Together these three make us feel good.”

§  Three more health benefits: Dr. Stibich also claims that smiling can relieve stress, boost your immune system and even lower your blood pressure.

§  Be more optimistic, positive and motivated: Says psychologist Dr. David Lewis, “Seeing a smile creates what is termed as a ‘halo’ effect, helping us to remember other happy events more vividly, feel more optimistic, more positive and more motivated.”

§  Just like chocolate: According to The British Dental Health Foundation, “...a smile gives the same level of stimulation as eating 2,000 chocolate bars. The results were found after scientists measured brain and heart activity in volunteers as they were shown pictures of smiling people and given money and chocolate.”

§  Can your yearbook picture and, more specifically, whether you were smiling predict your future? Two researchers claim that, yes, it can. Writing in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, researchers and authors LeeAnne Harker, PhD, and Dacher Keltner, PhD, of the University of California, Berkeley, said, “Over time, women who expressed more positive emotion in their yearbook pictures became more organized, mentally focused and achievement-oriented, and less susceptible to repeated and prolonged experiences of negative affect.”
