Welcome…Love is in the air this month as Valentine’s Day approaches.

Weddings will be playing a big part in peoples lives over the next few months and the region has its fair share of businesses to complete for the indulgencies of the bride, the groom and their families.

Not to forget the gardener, we will be featuring the Garden Calendar, features and editorials from our advertisers and introducing an interactive section to our website.

The weather, which has probably been the worst for twenty years this winter, hasn’t helped traders in the town and together with the road works will surely have an impact on trade this year.

Persevere through the coming months during the road works in the town centre and lets make sure we tell the world that Bewdley is

is still open for business

With a one-way system working overtime on three way traffic lights, getting through Bewdley has become somewhat of a nightmare.

The pavements on the left hand side of the road have security fencing along their gutter and the whole place looks like a scene from news footage of Iraq or Beirut.

Why the council decided to close the Cleobury Road from the island to Hales Park to resurface the road when all access was needed to escape the town was bizarre but that’s town planning.

I wonder why it will take so long to dig up the high street and put new pipes in and would like someone from the Highways Agency to contact the magazine for his or her views on the subject. Could the council suspend the parking charges in Bewdley for the duration of the road works? This would at least allow

the tourist and shopper to stop in the town. If any business thinks this is a good idea I should like to hear from you.

In the mean time there will be many businesses see a downturn in trade, and this is only the first month of the works. We must endeavour to attract local and out of town trade if the town is to survive and Your Local Times is now attracting a larger readership throughout the region and will be producing more features and editorials on the businesses in Bewdley and the surrounding area.

If you would like your business, a hobby or any interesting facts published please let the magazine know by emailing [email protected] or call on 01299 402094. We will always be pleased to hear from you.

The ice and snow has gone hopefully till next year! But now it’s gone what can we fish for and expect good sport? Well believe it or not every fish will be hungry after spending the past few weeks either in the cold dark water of a lake or a canal covered by the ice and snow or the fish that have not felt like feeding in a river water filled with grit, oil and salt washed in by melting snow from our busy roadways. But as I say that’s gone at least for the moment and now fish will want to feed but where do I go?

My first option would be the river and the species I would be after would be chub and roach. These species are true cold water feeders and on the very coldest of days these two fish will give you a bite or two! I suggest you get down to the water midday so it’s not an early start and

fish right on till dark. All along the River Severn, River Teme and River Stour hold a big head of chub and a piece of bread crust or bread flake anchored on the bottom by a couple of SSG shot will see a chub showing interest. When I say bread I mean a big piece as well something that will cover a size 6 hook yes a size 6 a 2lb chub has a huge mouth and a 5lb chub can take a tangerine in its mouth with ease!

The roach needs a more subtle approach with a small piece of bread flake on a size 14 or 16 hook feeding the swim with liquidised bread. I personally like to fish the rig with a small open ended feeder filled with liquidised bread and the ends plugged with a fluffy brown groundbait. I have lost count of the 4lb chub and 1lb roach I have taken from these rivers and such fish are a great way of keeping warm in the winter!

On the canals then try the canal running through Kidderminster, the Stourbridge junction or further a field the Droitwich Arm here will see you catching roach, some big perch, pike and even carp. Most anglers prefer to use the pole with small baits like “pinkies” me I’d rather go for a half lobworm on a size 10 hook and go for the bigger fish for be in no doubt the canals will hold specimen fish. I took chub to 5-04 last year on the waggler near Stourbridge and they will feed in the winter.

Now to stillwaters to be honest there are so many in this area it’s hard to decide where to go. For water like Furnace Mill, Willow Marsh, Moorlands and Woodlands View will start after the thaw to produce good bags of carp again. Try a ledger rig with sweetcorn on the hook or why not try my own SBS Corn Shaped Boilies? Just before the freeze up Andy Walker from Halesowen caught 19 carp at Willow Marsh on these SBS baits in four hours for the best part of 100lbs and the water temperature was only 5 degrees - now that’s winter fishing at its best.

Whatever you decide to go for wrap up warm, take a hot drink with you. I take two flasks one with coffee the other with soup and you will be surprised at the amount of fish that can be caught on a winter’s day.

Imagine breaking down and although you are in the AA or RAC with relay to get you home, will be reliant on them to transport your car to a repair workshop. From a list of recommended repairers they will try and pick the one closest to your destination or home but this may not be always the case and it may be a main dealer, which as we all know, can be rather expensive.

There is an alternative and we are lucky to have a traditional repairer on the outskirts of Bewdley who have the experience to repair most makes of car or van.

Bewdley Auto services, based at Cleobury Road, is run by Roger and Gary, both local residents and both having over fifteen years experience in the motor trade. Traditionally your local garage had to be a

repair work shop with mechanics trained in the ability to diagnose, strip down, repair the broken part or replace and reassemble and Bewdley Auto Services has these skills to get your vehicle back on the road as quickly as possible.

Attention to detail, great customer service,t experienced engineers, competitive pricing and local it makes sense to seek them out and have them look your vehicle over with every oil and filter change and get ready for trouble free motoring this Spring.

I was lucky, when I my suspension broke, that I could call them and arrange that the AA would transport my car to their workshop and within a few days it was back on the road as good as new. I even had the oil and filter changed at the same time and the vehicle was checked over to see what other maintenance needed to be done.

From servicing to a major overhaul your vehicle is in safe hands so give them a call and book your oil and filter change.

Remember the gimmicks and the phone calls from the double glazing sales people making offers of incredible savings, well that now has all changed. Forget the national companies and focus on your local supplier who will offer, not only a competitive installation, but also the quality and expertise your property deserves.

Improvements in the way the frames and the glass are made and the security the locking devices offer all go to show how the industry has moved into the twenty first century. Emphasis on the environment means your home will retain heat in the winter and, with some new glass on the market, keep the interior cool in summer.

Choosing a reputable supplier and installer has never been easier. Bridgnorth has a showroom, staffed by the people who matter the most, the owner and in most cases the family, so we know we have the confidence when enquiring about double glazing, conservatories and other related products we are getting sound advice.

The Real Bridgnorth Window Company is no exception, run by Martyn Donnelly and his wife Bianca; this is a truly family business. The showroom in Whitburn Street, Bridgnorth displays a variety of windows, doors and

conservatory displaying the quality of products your home deserves.

With experience in the window fitting business for 20 years Martyn will you lead through the information on the type of windows, doors and conservatory suitable for your home. He will come out and professionally measure up in detail to make sure everything fits correctly and give you a price for supplying and fitting together with the usual FENSA guarantee.

Martyn has designed and managed many installations throughout Shropshire and Worcestershire using the best materials with high performance characteristics and an installation service, which is second to none. With a great team of fitters they build first class bespoke conservatories and porches taking great care of your property by sheeting up your carpets and furniture and cleaning up after completing the installation.

With the business now starting to get established I was keen to continue working with groups as this is what I really feel at home with. I really love the challenge of ‘people centred work’ and as you can see from the following list I’ve been enjoying continuing that role.

Hopefully this will give you readers an idea of how painting pottery can be used in different ways to achieve end results in Community Work. I’ve had families from far and wide, Denmark, France, Isles of Scilly, Isle of Man, Cambridge coming in to paint. People have booked up birthday parties from Dudley, Droitwich, Worcester, Kinlet, Kidderminster, Cleobury Mortimer. We’ve had 36 birthday parties in year one. The good news for Bewdley town is that most of the parents have lunch, tea or coffee and shop in the town whilst their offspring are enjoying painting pottery.

After all that, I suppose the question you are all asking is, Are you making a profit? Is it working out? Making a profit…not much!…not yet anyway. Working out, I need to get into year two and find out! It is working out in the way that it is a really lovely and delightful job to be in. There have been lovely moments such as when Gladys, a ninety year old woman from Kidderminster came in to paint a Pigasaurus money bank as her late husband’s namesake. Bertie was lovingly painted by Gladys who met her beloved husband when she was a land girl in the war. Bertie’s dream was to own a pig farm. All that went down the drain when he met and married his beloved Gladys as his savings went on the marriage instead of his pig farm! Gladys painted her pig with BERTIE written across his BUTT! Gladys has a lovely way of telling stories and is always a delight when she visits, always enjoying a cup of tea and a piece of cake we sell from SCRUMDIDLIUMPTIOUS (delicious cakes made in Bewdley by Sue Blythe!!)

Although the fashion for owning an orangery began in the 17th century in Holland it was the nobility in England who wanted orangeries.

The Victorians where the first to make these fashionable after bringing over, from the hot climate, orange and lemon plants which needed an environment allowing the plants to thrive and produce fruit. Grand designs of elaborate structures were born in true Victorian style and today are being revived and copied. The grandest structure was probably Crystal Palace.

Today we have the convenience of the fruit shop and the super markets to purchase these citric fruits and now, having a conservatory or an orangery are there to add style and an extra room to your home. The latest designs of orangeries are now available from 5 star windows of

Kidderminster who design and build to suit most properties, creating a permanent structure without the hassle of constructing an extension from traditional materials.

The most time consuming period will be you choosing from the many designs available and once the order has been signed the orangery can then be manufactured and the site prepared ready for the final assembly and installation. Undertaking the entire infrastructure from footings, walls, installation of heating and electrics it will be ready for you to use in a shorter time than it takes to build a traditional extension.

All the construction is to current building regulations, which is all handled by 5 star and is covered by the FENSA insurance.

There was big news at Kidderminster Harriers in late January as the club revealed it’s new manager, Steve Burr.

Burr is regarded as one of the finest strikers of his generation following his goal scoring exploits with Macclesfield Town that him achieve promotion with the Silkmen, and reach two FA Trophy Finals.

He began the gradual transition into management with Nuneaton Borough, where he was player-manager and then full-time boss. After three years there he moved on to become manager of Hucknall Town. He achieved virtually instant success, cruising to the UniBond Premier Division title in his sole season at the club in 2003/04.

He then joined Northwich where he once again achieved promotion, before joining his most recent club, Stalybridge Celtic, where he has been in and amongst the promotion contenders for the last two and a half seasons.

His appointment as Kidderminster Harriers manager sees him once again have the opportunity to have a crack at management in the Blue Square Premier. With the new man at the helm having been in the play-off reckoning for a third straight season with Stalybridge, Harriers fans will be hoping he can bring some of his magic to Aggborough and help the club realise its dream of a return to the Football League.

“From the outside this has always looked to be

a club very well run, and run in

the right way,” commented the new boss after his arrival at Aggborough

Stadium.

“The stadium and the set-up here is geared for getting back up into the Football League so in that sense it wasn’t difficult to see there was a massive opportunity for me here.

“Hopefully I’ll bring success here and the one thing I want to do is bring entertainment to the fans.”

As all of us who sing with choirs, choral societies etc. realise it is both a pleasure and a privilege to perform wonderful music and share it with a congregation or audience. It is definitely something to be celebrated and Handel’s ‘Messiah’ is an ideal work to do this. We hope that as many church choirs, choral societies etc. would like to be represented (individual singers are also very welcome); there is lots of room for both a large choir and audience.

We will assemble at 2.00 p.m. for a 2.30 rehearsal – please bring your own music (preferably the Watkin Shaw version). There will be a break at about 5 o’clock for tea; you can bring your own but we will have light refreshments available. The performance will begin at 7.00 p.m. We will be joined by local professional soloists.

Just before Christmas 2008 Trinity Methodist Church next to St. Mary’s was the victim of an arson attack and since then the congregation has been meeting in the church hall. In addition to its religious significance Trinity Methodist Church is the focal point for many local organisations who use it on a regular basis. Work has begun and we hope the church will reopen around the time of this concert. The proceeds of the concert will go to the Trinity Methodist Church Restoration Fund. The charge to all singers will be £7.50 and admission for the audience £7.50 (£6.00 for concessions).

We hope as many choirs as possible will be represented; please wear your own choir robes/uniforms and we would like you to send us photographs and publicity material in advance so that we can mount a display. If you are not actually in a choir you are still most welcome – dress for the day will be standard ‘black & white’.

As most waistbands feel tighter in January, losing excess inches and getting fitter are high on the list of favourite New Year Resolutions. These good intentions are often forgotten before Valentines Day. The media is full of the latest fad diets, but do any really work at keeping the weight off? The simple solution is to eat less and exercise more, but this is not as easy as it sounds. Unfortunately there is no magic solution to make us trim, toned and healthy overnight. Making changes requires discipline, and many people fail to lose weight because they lack the self-discipline required. Jim Rohn said “We must all suffer from one of two pains: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. The difference is discipline weighs ounces while regret weighs tons.” In this case the pain of regret could also be accompanied by the burden of poor health. Department of Health statistics show that overweight people are at a significantly higher risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, certain cancers, high blood pressure, joint and mobility problems, depression and low self-esteem.

Guaranteed Weight Loss ProgrammeGREAT NEWS! There is a weight loss programme that comes with a full 60 DAY MONEY BACK GUARANTEE. It re-educates the body to enjoy healthy nutrition, without depriving us of the treats that we all enjoy. It also encourages us to take more exercise. Personal coaching through the weight loss programme, without enforced embarrassing public weigh-ins, helps to motivate and keep us focussed on the goal we have set.

The Forever Nutri-Lean Programme, combines a 9-day nutritional cleansing plan, followed by a long-term weight loss plan (Forever Nutri-Lean). With the philosophy of good nutrition, the programme has been designed to take the guesswork out of a lifetime of healthy eating and diet control. Step 1 – Clean 9 puts you on the path to a cleaner, healthier, happier you, whilst cleansing your body of unnatural chemicals. The natural products used in this step include: 4 Aloe Vera Gel – balancing and nutritious for healthy digestion and energy. 4 Forever Lite Ultra – with high quality protein scientifically formulated to help maintain a healthy diet. 4 Forever Garcinia Plus – has been shown to reduce the body’s conversion of carbohydrates into fats, and aids natural metabolism. 4 Forever Bee Pollen – to boost to energy, stamina, ‘feel good’ and appetite control.

Riverside Team hopes you had a good holiday and wishes you a very happy new year.

Our Spring Programme is based around the theme: ‘New Year, New You’. It includes lots of our regular, most popular, activities, such as Baby Club, Early Movers and a variety of stay and play sessions, alongside many new activities especially designed to encourage families with under-5s to identify what they would like to change this year, and to introduce them to a range of strategies which may help them reach their goals. Please see our programme for full details.

Karen Colder, Sarah Pugh or Sarah Gormley (Riverside Family Support Workers) will be out and about delivering printed copies of this programme to your settings next week and we would be grateful if you will ensure that all families with under-5s attending your setting receive a copy. As you know, most activities are free to anyone caring for a child under-5 including carers, older siblings and grandparents. One of the main advantages of

attending activities has been the opportunity for parents/carers to build a network of peer support in addition to accessing a wide range of information and resources including free home safety equipment for families with under-5s in receipt of benefits through Wyre Forest Home Safety Equipment Scheme. In addition to the activities offered at Riverside Children’s Centre, the Family Support Workers are also involved in delivering activities in primary schools, preschools and local community venues in order to ensure every family with children aged under-5 is able to access appropriate services in response to their needs. We are continually looking for ways in which to encourage all families to access our free activities so please contact me if you have any ideas about how we might support families attending your setting too.

Thank you for your support. I look forward to hearing from you.Viv Lawson, Project AdministratorRiverside Children’s Centre

How Crafty is AdvertisingI have always been creative but never had the confidence to have my own business.

I attended painting and pottery classes in the evenings for many years, selling a few items to friends and family. They kept telling me I should sell these commercially but how do you let people know you want to start a business?

Working from home my hobby is now my business and with the power of advertising, I now have local customers and shops stocking my paintings and ceramic works.

My craft business will be going from local to global by using Your Local Times web pages where customers can now purchase my goods.

Be like Val. Take the first step into turning your hobby into a little business by calling Your Local Times on 01299 402094 to set up your advert.

FEBRUARYThe change in seasons is tangible in the garden in February, the Celtic Festival of Imbolic, the celebration of first shoots and first born lambs.

How will the snow and frost have affected the growth of our plants, will it take longer for our gardens to wake up? Firm soil around plants that may have been affected by frost? In February we have a Whitlenge spring clean, sheds and greenhouses made ready for the busy time which is just around the corner.

Many seeds can be sown this month but make sure you bring compost inside to warm up first, sow inside salad leaves, summer cabbage, cauliflower, tomatoes, leeks and celery. Climbers such as sweet peas, rhodochiton and cobaea scandens which needs at least 2 metres growth before it will flower outside under cloches, broad beans, peas chard and radish.

Plant nerine bowdenii this month for a lovely autumn display, also plant snowdrops in the green or divide your own clumps.

Lightly prune clematis that flower in late spring but cut down hard buddleias, willows, eucalyptus gunnii, cotinus and cornus. Bring inside dogwood stems for a colourful arrangement in large pots.

Time to feed the soil for the new growth, dress soil with organic fertiliser, feed box plants, top dress any shrubs in containers or re-pot if necessary.

Flowers at this time seem so special, eranthis hyemalis shines in dark days, snowdrops, crocus and the elegant hellebores, you cannot have too many and we always wish we had planted more.

ouryLocal TimesLocal Computers

I think it’s safe to say that unless you’ve been living in a cave for the last ten years, computer viruses are very much a part of everyone’s life in the 21st Century. We covered a brief over-view around six months ago, looking at the origins and real threat they pose, this threat is never going away I’m afraid and the only way to avoid exposure and/or infection is to never use a computer, let alone the internet !!!

As time goes by, hackers get more sophisticated and devious. I suppose you could say they move with the times, always looking for new ways to annoy, confuse and frustrate as many users as they can, not to say businesses who stand to lose millions in lost revenue due to system crashes etc. So I suppose you’re wondering why we’re covering old ground once again ??

Please allow me to explain; Over the past few months we’ve witnessed a growing number of computers that have been infected with what we’ve daubed “Pseudo Anti-Virus programs”. We first came across this new “fad” around eighteen months ago when we discovered Anti-Virus 2008, which quickly evolved into Anti-Virus 2009 and obviously now, 2010 !!

Since then, we have catalogued at least another three – Anti Virus Live, Personal Anti Virus, Enterprise and I suspect new ones will emerge as time goes by, basically they’re all variations on a theme with the same end-result and be assured they LOOK very convincing. It is the nature of these programs that I wish to enlighten you with in this article because they are a very real threat and unless you aware of the way they infiltrate your machine, you could end up paying out in excess of £50 to an unknown benefactor for a program you don’t need and certainly don’t want... How do they work ??

Basically, they play on your fears and exploit your paranoia. It starts with a seemingly harmless box that will randomly pop up in the middle of your screen announcing your computer is either at risk from hackers, infected with a virus or in need of extra attention – even though you may have a genuine anti-virus program installed and running I hasten to add !! You will usually come across it whilst surfing the net and it will show itself by way of a quite genuine looking box in the middle of your screen announcing you are either a threat or under threat. Our suggestion to you at this point is – TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER AT THE WALL !!! This might sound a tad dramatic, but when you consider the consequences of letting it infect your machine you may understand why we recommend such a desperate move.

One would normally close a box or shut-down a program by clicking on the X in the top right corner, this is not guaranteed to eradicate this menace as the perpetrator knows you will

try and do this, so simply trying to close the program could unleash it on your innocent pc !!

If you are unlucky enough to end up with such a program, the first thing it does is disable your existing anti-virus program, then it will supposedly scan your hard drive reporting you have multiple ( and I mean MULTIPLE ) threats running in the background. It will offer you the chance to remove these fictitious threats and if you are foolish enough to accept the offer, you will be taken to a website where you will be asked to part with a sum of money, usually around £50. Now, if you do this, the program will not go away, it will continue to bother you with fake warnings and if you decide to remove it, when you check out the Add/Remove Programs list – it doesn’t exist !!

There are ways to manually remove these intrusions from your computer, but they are usually beyond the capabilities of the average user, worst case scenario you may have to format your hard drive and reinstall Windows, either way fore-warned is fore-armed – stay vigilant my friends.

A New Threat
