Notes, Discoveries, Recommendations, Reminders
Your Dublin Now guide Listed from left to right as appearing on the map.
The twin ‘R’ villages of Ranelagh and Rathmines have a red brick charm, which is complemented by vintage curio shops such as The 3rd Policeman and Magpie, and even a consignment store, No. 38. Ranelagh Arts Centre plays host to exhibitions and events, while The MART in Rathmines hosts pop-up events, exhibitions, and is always a hive of activity. Really under-the-radar are the gigs in barbershop, Abner Brown’s. New coffee spot on the scene, Grove Road Café, is definitely worth a gander, while Ranelagh is a particularly cool spot for food lovers, with new weekend pop-up Salt Lick, Dillinger’s and The Butcher Grill with their meaty joints, and TriBeCa’s infamous chicken wings - finger lickin’ good!
Dublin 8’s charms are many, stretching from the antique shops of Francis Street to the Italo-fusion fare at The Fumbally. The Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA)sits in this creative area, on the majestic grounds of the old Royal Hospital Kilmainham. The National College of Art and Design (NCAD) is in the area as well, enhancing the arty buzz in the area. Newmarket plays host to several weekend markets - The Brocante Market, Fusion Sundays, and the Dublin Flea, while you’ll also find food markets, The Dublin Co-Op and the Green Door Market there. You’ll also find one of the best brunches in Dublin at The Lennox, and tea specialists Wall & Keogh sitting pretty in Portobello.
Green fields and mountains lying to the west, and the Irish sea lying to the east, a mere half hour on a bus or train can get you out to the peace and quiet of seaside towns such as Dun Laoghaire, Dalkey and Howth. Eat fish and chips on the boardwalk, go for a quick dip in the sea, or even try Pure Magic’s kitesurfing if you think you’re tough enough! The Forty Foot is an infamous bathing spot, or The Vico is always abuzz on a sunny day. South to the city, Blackrock Market is a jumble of stalls, and boasts a couple of great eateries, Fish Shop and Canteen. If you venture all the way to Cabinteely, you’ll find the beautiful Urbun Café. Learn how to play Ireland’s indigenous sports at Experience Gaelic Games or for the more bookish, The Gutter Bookshop has a shop out in Dalkey, which stocks beautiful editions of all the things you’ve meant to get round to reading, but haven’t. And sure, isn’t that what holidays are about?
Take a walk on the cobbled side in this cultural hub, where neighbourhood coffee joints like The Lilliput Stores stand shoulder to shoulder with intimate gig/exhibition venues such as The Joinery. Great food spots are in abundance, from café-restaurant Slice to the sublime gastro-pub L. Mulligan Grocer, where craft beers and Irish cuisine are their speciality. There are cool, laid back bars in the area, such as the Dice Bar and The Cobblestone, where you can unwind after checking out a film at the architecturally splendid Light House Cinema.
GETTING AROUNDDublin is an easily navigable city by foot, or bicycle. The Dublin Bikes scheme is city-wide, so you can hire a ride to get you from A to B without a bother. There is an effective integrated public transport system, with Dublin Bus, and the tram system, the Luas, to help you get around the city. If you’re heading out into the city fringes, the DART train system is reliable, inexpensive, and you might even catch some beautiful sea views en route to your destination. If you’re in a rush, or on a late-night trip, hail a taxi and you’ll discover that Dublin taxi drivers are probably the friendliest and most gregarious in the world.
TOURSBy foot, bike, or bus, get a real feel for Dublin by taking a tour. Dublin Bus Tours offer a combined ticket that includes Dublin Bay Cruise and admission to Little Museum of Dublin, while Hidden Dublin Walks and our own Le Cool Dublin Experience offer up those little-known oddities of the city. Want to combine the beat with some eats? Then try a Fab Food Trail also.
