EVENTING

Tim StockdaleFor a wealth of show jumping experience, look no further than Tim Stockdale. He’s regularly represented Britain since 1988, including at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, and now has his eye on the 2012 Olympics. Tim will be sharing some of his secrets for training successful show jumpers. “I hope to give people an insight into how I teach my horses how to do their job,” he says. “I want people to leave with some practical tips they can use to improve their own horses.”

Tim will be doing two demonstrations each day and is keen to point out they’ll each look at a different aspect of training. He adds: “The atmosphere at Your Horse Live is unique – I’m really looking forward to it.”

Oliver TownendIn only four short years Oliver Townend has come a long way – Badminton 2005 was his first four star event where he finished an impressive 12th but this year saw him taking the top spot in style. He’s also helped to bring home team gold from the 2007 European Championships and came an impressive 11th at the World Championships the year before. He’s clearly a man on a mission and has built a reputation for getting results out of tricky horses, such as his first Badminton ride Topping. Oliver returns to Your Horse Live in 2009, fresh from his Burghley win, to talk through how he produces his event horses, takes them up the grades and approaches their training, both on the flat and over fences – not forgetting the importance of taking individual characteristics into account. He says: “Your Horse Live always has a great atmosphere – everyone is there to enjoy themselves and learn.”

Andrew GouldNew to the Your Horse Live arena is Andrew Gould, who at 28 has already represented Britain on five Young Rider European Cup teams, including taking a team bronze. He competes internationally at Grand Prix level and trains a number of leading riders including eventer Sharon Hunt and celebrity Katie Price. He now has his eyes firmly set on Olympic and World level competition.

Andrew will be explaining how he starts horses off on their journey through the scales of training and showing why stepping up a level needn’t be scary.

He says: “I’m really excited to be performing at Your Horse Live. I’ve never been before but lots of my clients go every year and always rave about it!”

Kelly Marks and Monty RobertsThe audiences were wowed last year by Kelly and Monty’s abilities to help bad loaders. This year Kelly, founder of Intelligent Horsemanship, and her mentor Monty, world-renowned horse whisperer, are back to help owners and horses with their real-life problems, without any need for punishment or rough handling. “We’ll be working with genuine problem cases for the first time in the arena,” explains Kelly, “and showing how simple methods can help overcome trust issues and build a better bond between horse and owner.”

David DeptfordHe’s one of the leading UK breeders and trainers of Quarter horses. As well as gathering various showing accolades, he’s been a regular member of the British reining team, who in 2008 just missed taking the bronze medal at the first World Reining Championships. But despite his achievements, David is quick to recognise that it may seem tricky to get started in western. “This year I’ll be focusing on showing people how they can have a go at some of the manoeuvres as well as what you can build up to,” he explains. “People need to feel that western is something they can try with their own horse at home.

“It’s great to have been invited back to such a prestigious show and we’re really looking forward to it, especially as the Your Horse Live audience is always so receptive – and I get the chance to show off my horses!”

UK Polocrosse AssociationPolocrosse is fast, furious, exciting and not for the faint-hearted – and it’s coming to Your Horse Live 2009! This interactive demonstration from the UK Polocrosse Association will leave you in no doubt about why you need to give it a go. Players from across the globe will converge in the main arena to demonstrate how to get started, explain the rules, tell us what’s important and also introduce us to their lovely – and very brave – horses. Your Horse writer Imogen Johnson and contributor Jonathan Keene may also hop into the saddle to show us how it’s done – they both play regularly. Get to your seats early for this one – it’s going to be big!

ENTErTAINmENT

Page 8: Your Horse Live 2009 Show Guide

There’s a packed programme of activities in Arena Two, kicking off from 9.30am on both Saturday and Sunday. Classical riding expert Sylvia Loch will present a fascinating insight into just how much a rider’s balance affects the movement of their horse, and offer advice to overcome the most common problems. “I’ll be showing how a rider’s seat influences a horse’s back,” says Sylvia. “How you sit can make it hollow or encourage a horse to round.”

If you have or are considering taking on an ex-racehorse, make sure you don’t miss eventing’s Olympic silver medallist Karen Dixon explaining how to get the best from these often quirky horses. “It’s vital to be clear what you want before taking on an ex-racehorse,” says Karen, “and then to start back at the basics, getting them to move in balance.”

Showing fans can look forward to top show producer Jo Bates revealing how she goes about getting every horse to look their best – and she promises they don’t have to be perfect to start with!

And Your Horse favourite and gridwork guru Carol Mailer will be explaining how grids can help give you and your horse that competitive edge, even if you’re only a weekend rider. “Grids can help you be more competent and consistent in the way you ride,” says Carol, “and they can help you deal with just about any problem your horse may throw at you.”

If you have a horse who can be spooky or nappy, then make Arena Two your priority this weekend. The Metropolitan Police are on hand to show us how to make our horses brave and bold – and they’ll have some of their lovely horses with them to demonstrate just how laid-back a horse can be. They’ll even be jumping through hoops of fire – don’t miss this.

Finally, natural horsemanship expert Charles Wilson will be back in the arena to help riders improve their performance and relationship with their horses. He’ll be partnered by his stunning stallion Icon’s Image to show how much more can be achieved when you tune in to what interests and motivates your horse, as well as what he may find upsetting. “I’m delighted to be part of this event again and sharing my understanding of horsemanship with such an enthusiastic audience,” says Charles. “I’m certain Your Horse Live 2009 will set the benchmark for equestrian events in this country.”

As if the Main Arena isn’t enough, check out what else is happening around the show

Shop till you dropRenowned for its fantastic shopping, Your Horse Live offers four halls of horsey heaven, packed with big brands at bargain prices! Whether you’re kitting out your horse, treating yourself or picking up some early Christmas presents, you’ll be spoilt for choice. And if you do find yourself laden with bags and boxes after a spending spree, don’t forget to make use of the Shop’n’ Drop service – for a small donation to our nominated charity, Mark Davies Injured Riders Fund, we’ll look after your goodies while you enjoy yourself unladen!

Have fun and help othersIt’s easy to believe ‘it won’t happen to me’ but accidents do happen – especially around horses. Did you know that you’re 20 times more likely to have an accident on a horse than on a motorbike? That’s why the Mark Davies Injured Riders Fund (MDIRF) – this year’s Your Horse Live nominated charity – was set up. People who’ve suffered a riding accident can often be affected financially and emotionally, as well as physically, with serious incidents frequently having far-reaching effects on both the individual, their family and friends. MDIRF is there to support any person affected by an equestrian-related accident, whether by offering professional medical or legal advice, practical help or moral support. So, don’t forget to spare some change for the collection buckets being rattled around the show – MDIRF is there for us all, should we ever need them. Find out more about MDIRF at stand no 231.

Equines of all shapes and sizes and from all around the globe will be gracing the Your Horse Live Breeds Village. A selection of breeds from around the world will be waiting to say hello, including the Fell, Welsh and New Forest. Chat to our breed experts to find out how you can support our these breeds so they can be enjoyed for years to come.

Among our smallest breeds this year is the Caspian – despite usually standing under 13hh it is properly considered a horse. Find out why and discover some of its other features in the Breeds Village.

If you like big ears, take a look at the mule and be prepared to be smitten! For sheer power and intelligence, visit the Quarter Horse, while the Lusitano’s looks are sure to impress.

There’s also the chance to see one of the small handful of Rocky Mountain Horses that live in the UK – these strong but kind gaited horses really come into their own as they move. Get to see their fascinating paces, along with all the other breeds, in action in the daily Breeds Parade in Arena Two – Saturday 2.15pm and Sunday noon.
