As we start pruning our lawns andfixing up our homes let's not forgetabout the people who lost everythingto Hurricane Irene and TropicalStorm Lee last fall. From theSchoharie Valley all the way intoVermont there are people who stilldo not have homes to go to. TheTown of Prattsville was wiped off the map. Farmlands aredevastated; the local economies are in dire straits.

Right here in Scotia people lost their homes to the raging MohawkRiver. The trickledown effect from this storm will loom for years. Many beloved pets ended up in shelters because their ownerssimply could not take care of them. Kids had to switch schools;people lost their jobs because the businesses were washed away. You all know by now that I believe in the human spirit and ourability to rise above disasters, it is what Americans do. Ourneighbors need our help. If you get a few friends together withsome gloves, shovels and rakes and take a ride to one of theaffected areas you will have no problem finding someone who trulyneeds you. Even for a few hours. Of course donations are alwayswelcomed but when you give your time it is priceless. The spiritualimpact you can make on someone by giving them a couple hoursof work will stay with them forever and help them heal mentally. If you are not able to do physical work then go and lend a smile, spend some money in the local diners and businesses. Share a story, hold someone's hand and look into their eyes. Take some of theirpain away for a few minutes. You may find a new lifelong friend, but at the very least you will walk away a better person. For moreinformation please see the contact information below.

PUT TIME & TAX-ADVANTAGEDINVESTMENTS ON YOUR SIDE If you’re relatively young, and you’ve been investing onlya few years, you possess an asset that is invaluable andcannot be replaced: TIME. And the more time you spendcontributing to tax-advantaged investments, the betteroff you may be.

As an investor, time is your ally for two reasons. First, the more time you giveto your growth-oriented investments, the greater their growth potential. Andsecond, the effects of market volatility have tended to decrease over time, though as you no doubt have heard, past performance is not a guarantee offuture results.Clearly, it pays to put time on your side. And when you’re investing in tax-advantaged vehicles, time becomes an even more critical component ofinvestment success, especially when you are young and have several decadesahead of you before you retire.Suppose, for example, that you put $200 per month into an investment onwhich you paid taxes every year. If you earned a hypothetical 7% return onthis investment, you’d end up with about $324,000 after 40 years. But if youput that same $200 per month into a tax-deferred investment, such as atraditional Individual Retirement Account (IRA), and you earned that same 7%return, you’d wind up with about $513,000 after 40 years. Of course, once youstarting taking withdrawals, presumably when you’re retired, you’ll have topay taxes on your earnings, so your after-tax accumulation would be about$385,000, assuming you took your IRA in a lump sum (which most peopledon’t) and also assuming you were in the 25% tax bracket. However, by thetime you retire, you may be in a lower bracket. Plus, you have some controlover how much you withdraw each year, so you may be able to affect thetaxes you’ll pay. Furthermore, depending on your income level, yourcontributions to a traditional IRA may be tax-deductible in the years in whichyou make the contributions. (Keep in mind that this hypothetical example isfor illustrative purposes only and does not represent a specific investment orinvestment strategy.)While tax deferral is obviously a nice feature for an investment, tax-free maybe even better. If you meet the income requirements, you might want toconsider investing in a Roth IRA, which provides tax-free earningswithdrawals, provided you’ve held your account for at least five years and youdon’t start taking withdrawals until you’re at least age 59∏. This means that,in the above example, you’d have accumulated that same $513,000 — butyou won’t have to pay taxes on your withdrawals. Generally speaking, theRoth IRA may make more financial sense for those who are eligible, but if youthink you’ll be in a lower tax bracket when you retire, and your income levelpermits you to deduct some of your contributions, you may want to considera traditional IRA. Consult with your tax advisor for guidance on the mostappropriate approach for your situation. When it comes to building resources for retirement, it’s almost impossible tosave and invest “too much.” So take full advantage of both time and tax-advantaged investments. By putting these investments to work for you, andby keeping them at work, you’ll be putting time on your side as you worktoward your financial goals.

IS YOUR SLOW METABOLISM TO BLAME FOR WEIGHT GAIN? You're working out and eating well, but just can't seemto lose weight. Could a slow metabolism be keepingyou from your weight-loss goals? It just might. What is Metabolism?Metabolism is the complex, biochemical process inwhich your body takes what you eat and drink and

converts it into energy. Your metabolism is constantly at work, even duringrest and sleep when your body needs energy to breath, circulate blood, adjust hormones, repair cells, and grow new cells.Your basal metabolic rate is the amount of calories it takes for your body toperform its basic functions. It affects how much energy your body needs todo its job and helps determine the number of calories you'll burn each day. Many factors play a role in your basal metabolic rate. Larger people andthose with more muscle mass burn more calories even while resting. Thismeans overweight people usually have a faster metabolic rate than theirthinner peers. Men generally have more muscle and less fat and thereforeburn more calories, giving them the advantage when it comes to metabolicrate. The older you are, the less muscle you're likely to have. As a result, youburn calories slower. Besides your basal metabolic rate, the amount ofphysical activity you get and the way your body digests and processes fooddetermines how many calories you burn. While many factors go into yourmetabolism, the most variable is physical activity. Exercise also makes themost difference in the number of calories you burn, so amp up your exerciseand watch your metabolism rise as well.Slow Metabolism = Weight Gain?Contrary to popular belief, a slow metabolism rarely causes excess weightgain. While it would be easy to blame your weight on a slow metabolism, the most likely culprit behind those extra pounds is the amount of caloriesyou consume versus the amount of calories you expend in physical activity. When you eat more calories than you expend, your body stores that awayas fat.Your metabolism is a natural process, and your body balances yourmetabolism to meet your individual energy needs. This is made clear whenfolks jump into a starvation diet. When you don't eat, your body slows downthe metabolizing processes to conserve calories and energy to survive. Youdon't have much control over your metabolism, but you can control thenumber of calories you burn during exercise. The more activity you perform, the more calories you burn.Having a slow metabolism is rare, and it usually doesn't cause obesity.Medical conditions such as hypothyroidism and Cushing's syndrome mayslow metabolism and lead to weight gain. But for the most part, the factorsthat contribute to weight gain include consuming too many calories, genetics, family history, unhealthy habits such as too little sleep or noteating breakfast, and certain medications.Boost Your Metabolism?Trying to speed up your metabolism will likely have little effect on weightloss. Therefore, be skeptical of products, foods, and drinks that claim to dosuch a thing. They may have dangerous or undesirable side effects. If amagic pill is what you're waiting for, you may be waiting a long time. If youwant to lose weight, nothing will get you there faster than a healthy dietand a consistent, challenging exercise program. If you want to kick-startyour metabolism with challenging progressive workouts then call or emailme to get started on your own effective exercise plan.

SEVEN STRATEGIES FOR SAVINGAre you doing your best to save for your future? It canbe very challenging to begin a savings program. Afternecessities such as food, clothing and housing, therecan be little left to put aside for future goals.Unfortunately, failing to save could mean the

difference between enjoying a comfortable retirement and giving up somebasic needs. Often it is a matter of making the decision to begin savingnow in order to buy a new home or car later. The goals you set areimportant to you. Making changes to prepare for those goals can make adifference. For that reason, State Farm has taken a look at various ways to get aperson's savings plan on track. We've come up with seven strategies thatyou can use today.

1.Don't splurge with your tax refund. Instead of spending yourrefund, use it wisely by paying down debt, funding an individual retirementaccount, or saving it for future financial goals.

2.Take full advantage of your employer's retirementcontributions. Your employer may match a percentage of thecontributions you make to your retirement savings plan. It's a good idea todo what it takes to get the matching limit. It's free money that can reallyhelp your bottom line during retirement.

3.Start small and stay steady. The first word is the most important -start. You should begin as early as possible to get the most out of yoursavings plan.

4.Pay yourself first. Think of your savings or investments as a bill youmust pay on a regular basis, much the same as a car or mortgage payment.Be disciplined and make the payments according to a set schedule. Forbetter results, establish an automatic monthly deduction from yourpaycheck or checking account to fund an investment or savings account.

5.Create separate pots of savings for upcoming life stages.Retirement may be an important goal for which to begin saving, but othergoals or events need as much or more preparation. Don't short-changeother goals while concentrating on one thing. Whether it's a home, car orchild's education, it is important to give appropriate attention to each.

6. If you have children, find the right education plan. You have anumber of choices when it comes to saving for a child's education. Findingthe one that makes sense for your situation takes planning andinformation. This takes us to the seventh and, quite possibly, the mostimportant point…

7.Work with someone you know and trust. Everyone's needs andgoals are unique. Just as you go through many changes during yourlifetime, your financial goals may change. You should work with aprofessional who not only knows about various plans and strategies, butknows you and will stay with you through the long haul. Most people feelthe best guidance they receive comes from a financial professional theyknow and trust. In the end, it all boils down to making a plan, getting started and stayingthe course. When you make the decision to finally start, contact a financialprofessional who knows you and understands your needs.

“Honest criticism is hard to take, particularly from a relative, a friend,

an acquaintance, or a stranger."- Franklin P. Jones

WELCOME SPRINGAh, spring… it is really almost here. We got a littletease a few weeks ago with the summer-like weatherand it got me itching to put a little spring in myhouse! How about you? I've got a few tips to help youwelcome spring, whenever it decides to come andstay a while.

1. Clear out the clutter. I know I say it all the time, but a deepcleaning and organizing can do wonders for your home, without spendinga dime. If you want to spend a little bit, get some natural, beautifullyscented cleaning products and give yourself a little treat while you're atit. Don't forget the windows - and really let the light shine in!

2. Lighten up. Clean off light bulbs and switch out your old, dustylampshades with something fun. I love Target's spring shades! Take downyour heavy winter curtains - yes, it's okay to leave your windows naked ifyou don't need the privacy, and if you do, pick up some inexpensive voilecurtains or match-stick shades. Finally, replace your pillows and throwblankets with bright, spring patterns and fabrics.

3. Give your things a new home. Spring is a great time to “shop”your home and give things you already own a new place to live. Movingartwork and accessories from room to room gives your space a new lookand is completely free!

4. Give your bath a mini-makeover. The bathroom rarely gets anupdate-once you do your bath, it tends to stay that way for a long time.Add bright towels, a new rug, maybe a brightly colored shower curtain toput a little spring in your bath, and make getting ready for work morefun!

5. Dress your tables. Spring is a great time to swap out winter-huedcandles and bowls of potpourri and dress your dining and occasionaltables with brightly colored displays of vases, bowls, decorative figurinesand other accessories. Group by color and in odd numbers for the besteffect.Spring is a great time to shake off the winter blahs and make your homefeel fresh and new. Need inspiration? Drop by my Facebook page or checkout my website for lots of great photos are articles! Happy spring!

We even included an engine oil recycling program toassist in heating the structure.”

SPRING PC TUNE-UP TIPS1. Perform a Full Virus Scan and Spyware scan.

2. Clean Inside Components.I recommend having your Computer/Desktopcleaning performed by a trained professional. They will open the side cover and usecompressed air to blow out any dust that has

accumulated inside your computer. If you have owned your computer fora couple of years now, I suggest having it cleaned. The big issue here isthe dust accumulation between the CPU and fan where the heat sink sits. The other issue is with the power supply, over time the dust can obstructthe intake/exhaust of air flow, causing you computer to run hot, overheatand shutdown unexpectedly. If your computer has not been cleaned in along time, I suggest turning it off when it's not in use, allowing it to cooloff. A computer should be cleaned at least once a year. The recommendedis every three 3 month

3. Delete Browsing History.Open Internet Explorer. Click on tools, internet options, browsing history, delete. Delete temporary Internet files.4. Upgrade Memory.Any Windows 7 system with less then 4 gigs of RAM can benefit from anupgrade. The good news is that RAM is pretty cheap these days. The badnews is that the system will have to be opened up to install the memory.Opening up a system that has been untouched for years can lead to somesurprises; technicians have been known to find dust clogging up coolingfans and filters, or even worse – spider webs or mouse nests. So it'sprobably best to let a skilled tech do it for you. But, be careful withhardware upgrades, after all is said and done, a new low-end PC mayprove to be a better performer and less expensive than upgrading a four-or five-year-old system.

LAUGHTER, SIMPLY FUN!"Joy in one's heart and some laughter on one's lipsis a sign that the person down deep has a prettygood grasp of life." - Hugh SideyJust the other night, it was gorgeous out, great nightfor a barbecue. The grill was all cleaned off and readyto go. As the grill warmed up I set the patio table

with drinks, fresh cut fruit and a plate ready to be adored with two hugegrilled steaks. The new lawn chairs sat near the table beckoning ournames. With the price tags still attached my boy and I 'lounged" out asthe grill puffed out the smell of dinner. The warm fresh air made us a bit giddy. Talking about silly things thatmade no sense while we enjoyed our first delicious cookout of theseason. With full bellies, my son was ready to "play" in the yard. He gotout his homemade "potato canon". I videotaped him messing with it.My smile was from one ear to the other. Even at 15, he is excited about"playing" in the yard. He put in a little rubber football and launched thatbad boy right over the house, right over the street and into the neighborsfront yard. Appreciating the fact that it was their front yard and not theirfront window!! This spurred an array of different activities with thefamed potato canon. He proceeded to practice his "drills" for colorguard using the potato canon of course. He flung that PVC canon in theair and caught it again and again, spinning it in his hands as if it was his"gun" he uses for the guard. As we broke out in laughter after theperformance he continued to think of things to do that I could videotape. After taping some cartwheels and a few more tries at the shootingthe gun, we sat and watched the videos play back. Laughing harder andharder each time we watched. No surprise here that I will say it was a great night. Simple and fun. Asthe mosquitoes started to feast on us for their dinner we cleared thetable and headed in. Still laughing that the football made it over thehouse and that my gangly teenager can still do a few good cartwheels! When we settled down for the night, we knew we would sleep well fromall the fresh air, the laughter and the good time we shared. It wentwithout saying that we both knew we had a grasp on the good life!! As always, I wish you peace, joy and life filled with laughter!

SPRING IS IN THE AIR…For most us, the start of spring is welcomed bythoughts of warmer weather, beautifulflowers and picnics in the park. But, for the 50million Americans who suffer from allergies, the early signs of spring more closelyresemble sneezing, coughing and itchy, wateryeyes.

Allergic conjunctivitis, also called "allergic rhinoconjunctivitis," is the mostcommon allergic eye disorder. The condition is usually seasonal and isassociated with hay fever. The main cause is pollens, although indoorallergens such as dust mites, molds, and dander from household pets mayaffect the eyes year-round. Typical complaints include itching, redness, tearing, burning, watery discharge, and eyelid swelling.

Rubbing itchy eyes is a natural response. However, rubbing usually worsensthe allergic reaction due to the physical impact on the mast cells, whichcauses them to release more mediators of the immune response.Translation: Do not rub your eyes! To effectively treat and relieve thesymptoms caused by eye allergies, patients should see their optometrist. Inmost cases, allergy-related conjunctivitis can be soothed with prescriptionor over-the-counter eye drops depending on the patient and his or hermedical history.

While eye allergies can affect anyone, the spring can be particularly hard oncontact lens wearers. Extended wear time and infrequent lens replacementare two of the main reasons contact lens wearers face more severesymptoms. We recommend contact lens wearers consider the following tomake the spring season more comfortable:

• Reduce contact lens wearing time when possible.• Talk to your optometrist about changing your cleaning method or

using daily disposable contact lenses.• Use eye drops as prescribed by a doctor of optometry.

While eye allergies can be a nuisance and affect job performance, leisureand sporting activities, symptoms of allergies can be curtailed andprevented by following these recommendations:

• Don't touch or rub your eyes.• Wash hands often with soap and water.• Wash bed linens and pillowcases in hot water and detergent to

reduce allergens.• Avoid sharing, and in some cases, wearing eye makeup.• Never share contact lenses or contact lens cases with someone else.

Beyond discussing allergy relief with your optometrist, the AOA alsorecommends adults age 60 and under have a comprehensive eye examevery two years. Adults over age 60 should have eye exams annually.

At 8am Saturday March 31st more than sixty Glenville residentsincluding neighbors, relatives, friends and former classmates of CraigFrear assembled at the snow covered Maalwych Park along theMohawk River. State Police have taken the investigative lead in thecase of Craig Frear, who mysteriously vanished in late June 2004. Atthe park staging area, volunteers received direction from State PoliceMajor Crimes Investigator Gloria Coppola regarding the search area.

The goal of this search is to hopefully locate signs of missing peoplesuch as clothing, personal items, and unfortunately bones she toldvolunteer searchers. The NYS Canal Corporation has yet to close thedams and locks for the upcoming navigation season so the waterremains at an all-time low right now she explained. While theysearched this area previously (about 3 years ago) since the severeflooding resulting from storms Irene and Lee, the area of the MohawkRiver has been somewhat uprooted. Investigator Coppola said theyfound a jaw bone very recently in the area that had once beensearched, which escalated the need to have this area searched again. The bone found has been confirmed as not belonging to Craig Frear bythe State Police forensic lab.

The assembled volunteers separated into four groups and begansearching both sides of the river bank between the SchenectadyCounty Community College and Lock 10 in Cranesville, a distance ofnearly fourteen miles. The search mainly concentrated in a six milestretch of the river between locks 9 and 10 where the earlier discoverywas made. This weekends search was organized and led by the NYSPolice Investigator Coppola. She has been the lead investigator in theCraig Frear case. She told volunteers that they had boats out on thewater in the designated area last Thursday and Friday and was hopefulthat Saturday's foot search may provide more clues.

While Craig was on all of our minds during our search, this searchreally is for all the families of missing people out there said his motherVeronica Frear. If you have any information concerning this case, please contact New York State Police at 518-630-1700.

THE DESIRE - Being a local guy growing up in Scotia and now living in BurntHills, the familiar sound of the C-130's from our local 109th Airlift Wing of theNY Air National Guard as they practice overhead is part of life, and to behonest I am awed by them. The C-130 albeit a 1950's era workhorse is155,000 lbs fully loaded; netting 65,000 lbs of cargo and can cruise at300mph! The LC-130 Skibird variants are built to land can also land on snowor ice and a variety of hostile environments. When they do, they may beassisted in the liftoff by JATO rockets that help boost the plane off the groundon short, unprepared runways and snowfields. Fully loaded, it can take off orland on only 3,000 feet of a gravel airstrip. The plane is manned by a crew of 5: pilot, copilot, engineer, navigator andloadmaster. These planes are maintained along with the other base operationsby a team of 1,200 people; 450 of them full time and the rest are “traditionalguardsman” who dedicate a weekend every month and serve anywhere from2-8 weeks of active duty every year. With about 250 flyers, it's important topoint out that the nearly 1,000 of the team are very dedicated maintenance, medical and other support personnel that is integral to the Unit's ongoingsuccess. The Guardsmen have the same training requirements as the “fulltimers”, hence the rigors of a second job for them. This thriving airbase alsodrives almost 110 million dollars back into our community.I always wanted the privilege to ride along one of their AeromedicalEvacuation training flights and decided to approach one of our localbusinessmen and member of our Burnt Hills- Ballston Lake BusinessProfessional Association, Kurt Bedore. Kurt is a man whose humility and lowkey approach reveals a dedicated airman who has over 4200 hours and holdsthe rank of Lt Col in the ANG.With 25 years of service to our country, Kurt rodea full scholarship as an ROTC Cadet; he served as an Electronic Warfare Officer(EWO) on a B-52 before joining up on the C-130's as one of the firstNavigators in anticipation of taking over the Operation Deep Freeze missionfrom the Navy in Antarctica in late 1995.Their unit typically hauls between 12- 14M lbs of cargo / people / fuel in their shortened 4 month season (Oct - Feb)with over 95% mission success in spite of the frigid weather and other theaterchallenges (and no hangars for their maintenance troops!)Kurt served in theater for Operation Desert Storm I and Joint Forge (Bosnia)but it's the humanitarian nature of the C-130 skibird polar missions that Kurtis quick to point out in addition to the fact that his Unit is also contributing toOperations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. He was partof the operation that rescued Dr. Gerry Nielson from Antarctica in 1999 andfrequently returns to the “ice” as a navigator, bringing in the plane home, attimes, in adverse weather by shooting celestial navigation or directingairborne radar approaches. He has pointed out that the magnetic compass isnot reliable at the poles due to the nature of the magnetic fields at the endsof the earth and sometimes the same is true of the GPS systems. When he isn't serving with these highly professional military personnel whothrive on 'giving back” thru their service, he is hard at work as the Principallicensed Civil & Environmental Engineer at KB Engineering & Consulting(www.kbengineeringandconsulting.com), a business that offers many servicesfrom infrastructure design, storm water management to environmentalauditing and compliance and permitting services and more.PERMISSION GRANTED- I have to say that I didn't really expect the chance toexperience this opportunity as a media representative, although I didn'texpect to get a White House Press Corps Pass when President Obama came toGE; that said I was instructed to report to the facility 2 hours early for thepreflight briefing. I wasn't alone on this flight as there were other businesspeople & employers equally as excited as I was. What was common to all ofus attendees was the desire to experience exactly what goes into the flightthat we seem to take for granted in what is yet another “give back” to thecommunity from our military, an up-close and personal observation of thefinest military personnel you will ever see at work while cruising in the bellyof a transport aircraft. The briefing began with a welcome from the base Commander Col. Timothy J.LaBarge who is responsible to the Governor of New York for the only LC-130Airlift Wing in the world, an impressive start to an impressive afternoon forsure! The Base Chaplain spoke to us about the importance of his role insupporting not only the needs of those who practice their faith openly but the

protection of the rights of those who may choose to reflect in whatever waythey deem fit without consequence or question. In addition to the spiritualsupport, mental and physical fitness professionals round out the team inproviding everyone with quality support systems in a military environment. Iwas highly impressed with the depth into which this base drills down to inorder to ensure the very best in resources for those who choose a military lifeincluding a representative from the VA who underscored the role they play forevery military veteran who may require specific health needs that the VAresources embrace. There was one last presentation before we boarded the bus out to the tarmacand that was from the recruitment team. There is a real need for highlymotivated, dedicated people who want to serve their country. The Air NationalGuard can fill that desire in a highly professional setting, as their websiteindicates you become part time Blue- full time You.Visit www.goang.com/Unit/109th+Airlift+Wing for all the details onrecruitment possibilities in the ANG.THE FLIGHT- The Loadmaster greeted us on the bus and made sure weunderstood what was expected of us as we boarded the aircraft, from seatingand securing the seatbelts on the nylon web seats to the oxygen masks thatwe would need to don in any depressurization emergency. On this flight, wewere given the opportunity to witness the Unit's Aeromedical EvacuationSquadron on a training mission, one that requires a specific number of realtime hours in flight simulating an emergency while being evaluated for theirproficiency. The ride began with fitting our earplugs as this is not a quiet rideat any level, nor was it a smooth ascent on this windy afternoon. Once webroke above the clouds, it smoothed out and we were free to wander aboutand take turns gazing out the few windows. The cargo area is roughly 40 feetlong and just under 10 feet wide and 9 feet tall and every bit of space isdedicated to some sort of securing device that allows not only rows of seatingbut breaks down and stows away for everything from utility helicopters andsix-wheeled armored vehicles to standard palletized cargo. In an aerialdelivery role, it can airdrop loads up to 42,000 pounds - this is one heftyaircraft. Our flight path took us downstate over NYC then up the coast over LongIsland Sound out to Nantucket before turning back for the ride home over RIand MA to Albany at which point I was invited up to the flight deck behindthe pilots next to Kurt as he navigated from his position. This was a once in alifetime event and I will never forget it! Getting to watch the descent over theHelderberg Escarpment with the Corning Towers on the horizon is somethingthat needs to be seen to grasp. It was only a minute after clearing the towersthat I could see the airbase runway in Schenectady; bearing down on our finalapproach, I caught a glimpse of General Electric and Proctors Theatre as theMohawk River flashed by. Within seconds, we were on the runway and thepilot reversed the pitch on the blades creating the familiar howl thataccompanies each landing as a method of braking after an incredibly smoothtouchdown. I am at a loss for words that express my sincere gratitude to themen and woman of the 109th ANG for allowing me the opportunity to flyalong with them and see firsthand the level of professionalism and dedicationthat goes into each and every mission they undertake. God Bless our Troops.
