Article Contributed byGreat Lakes Medical Research

For many people “medical research” conjures up images of scientists in a laboratory full of research specimens and lots of test tubes. At Great Lakes Medical Research nothing could be further from the truth.

Located in Westfield, New York, Great Lakes Medical Research offers area residents the opportunity to become participants in the continued development of medications by enrolling in a clinical trial. Each clinical trial is sponsored by either a pharmaceutical company or the National Institutes of Health. Study participants are seen by a board certified physician in a modern office setting. All medical services including study medicines, exams and procedures are provided at no charge to the patient. Some studies even reimburse for the patient’s time and travel to participate in the trial.

What is a clinical trial?Medical research answers many questions about health, illness, and treatment options. Evaluating new

medicines and other treatment options may involve research using a clinical trial. Clinical trials are designed to answer a specific question about a treatment, usually the safety and efficacy (how well it works under optimal conditions) of the treatment.

How do I enroll in a clinical trial?Enrolling in a clinical trial is voluntary. Volunteers, who meet specific criteria, including the condition being studied, receive a study explanation and if they are eligible and choose, they can join the clinical trial. The informed consent process which is part of enrolling in a clinical trial includes an explanation of the trial, the risks and possible benefits of the trial, and the alternatives to participating in the trial. Typically, a written form ensures that consent was granted and that the participant understood their involvement in the study. Informed consent does not require the participant to remain in the study if he or she no longer desires to do so.

Medical Director, Dr. Donald Brautigam, states that, “it is a great privilege and responsibility to participate in the process of medical research and drug development. Our research participants understand that the benefit of their participation goes beyond themselves. Knowledge gained today can change the future for their children and generations to come.”

How do I learn more aboutmedical research and clinical trials?

Before becoming involved in a clinical trial, become informed! If you would like to participate in a research study, you can find more information at government websites such as:

• www.health.nih.gov• www.clinicaltrials.gov• www.centerwatch.com/patient/backgrnd.html

The Great Lakes Medical Research site is staffed with registered nurses, certified clinical research coordinators and physicians who work closely with every research participant. Great Lakes Medical Research is currently conducting clinical trials in the following areas: asthma, diabetes, hypertension, gout, COPD and high cholesterol. If you think you might qualify for a study and are interested in learning more, call 1-877-326-4567 or log on to our website at www.glmr.info. Health Care Rx: Take Care of YourselfArticle Contributed by

Walt Pickut

“Have a nice weekend,” my friend said one Friday afternoon at the end of another long work week. “Take care of yourself.”

“Thanks,” I answered, not realizing I’d just gotten a prescription that could save the lives of close to 40 million people next year.

Nearly 40 million people around the world die every year from diseases you can’t even catch. That’s how it is with sickness; you can catch a cold or catch the flu from somebody else, but you can’t catch a heart attack, a stroke or diabetes from anybody. The ones you can’t catch are called “non-communicable diseases” (NCDs). They can kill you.

The good news, according to researchers reporting for the United Nation’s World Health Organization, is that 80% of NCD deaths are preventable; they don’t have to happen at all. Responsible self-care can prevent and

sometimes even cure these diseases. Simply stated: “Take care of yourself. It works.”

People living in the Chautauqua County Region (including Warren and Erie, Pennsylvania) have access to at least 40 hospitals and clinics and many hundreds of physicians. Those numbers are dwarfed, however, by the population of nearly 250,000 people who could each become their own doctors… and prevent as much as 80 percent of all premature deaths from NCDs.

It’s not a new idea. “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” Benjamin Franklin once said. If you’d rather not need a heart specialist some day, or a lung, kidney, nerve or gastrointestinal expert, there is one more specialty you should look for. Do it now.Look for a Preventative Medicine specialist. He or she will tell you how to become your own best doctor before you need one. The top causes of preventable NCD deaths in adults in the United States include high blood pressure and heart-related illnesses, alcohol consumption, smoking or drug abuse, obesity, indoor air pollution, firearm accidents and traffic collisions. Preventative Medicine specialists work to help prevent diseases and injuries through education and awareness of such simple measures as proper diet and exercise, sanitation, good prenatal care and best practices in parenting.

You can actually prevent many of the sicknesses that you can’t catch. Look for Preventive Medicine Clinics and Preventive Medicine Practitioners. Start your own personal preventive medicine practice by sticking with an exercise program, by putting down that fork a little sooner, by avoiding air pollution, especially the kind you buy 20-to-a-pack.

One of the best ways to gain a partner in your own “preventive medicine practice” is to ask your physician one simple question whenever you need a prescription medication for your blood pressure, heart problems, arthritis or shortness of breath: “Is there anything I can change in my lifestyle instead of taking this pill?” If so, then simply do it.

“Take care of yourself.” It is a prescription that costs little and may save you millions, which you just might earn if you keep yourself alive and well as long as your body was really built to last.

As the population of Chautauqua County ages, it is important to clarify the term “Continuing Care Retirement Community,” (CCRC), and key definitions relating to the concept. The changing face of continuing care may be important for your future.

Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRC)In a Continuing Care Retirement Community a number of care styles are available in a single residential setting, including assisted living, independent living and skilled nursing care. Many CCRCs are private, non-profit organizations, and a number of them have religious affiliations. According to the Assisted Living Federation of America, about 350,000 residents currently live in approximately 1,200 CCRCs nationwide.

On average, a CCRC community serves around 330 residents per. Typically, residents live independently in a cottage or apartment on campus and enjoy an active and functional lifestyle. As residents progress in age, or if additional health care or services are needed, they have priority for higher levels of care – assisted living and skilled nursing.

Seniors who select a CCRC commonly pay an initial, partially refundable entrance fee. Monthly service fees thereafter vary based on such factors as the level of financial risk for long-term care services, the size of the residential unit chosen and the type of additional services and amenities provided.

Research shows that residents living in a CCRC have a longer life expectancy than other individuals. CCRCs also substantially improve the health and emotional well-being of residents through increased socialization, staff involvement and daily interaction with others.

“CCRC Without Walls”Recently, the CCRC moniker has morphed into a new concept and buzzword - a “CCRC without walls.” In this system seniors stay in their own homes, rather than purchasing a new residence on campus, while the care community comes to them, providing the amenities and care levels afforded to the residents on campus. This unique continuing care concept is also commonly called “Community Based Services.”

These programs typically provide services on a fee basis in the

member’s homes as needed, for instance, maintenance, cooking, cleaning, home health care and even physical therapy.

Many experts believe CCRC will expand in the years ahead. According to Stephen Maag, director of residential communities for LeadingAge, a senior housing industry association, “The focus of the senior housing industry has been on bricks and mortar and not community based services. But we’re now getting a clearer recognition there is a significant market out there of people we have not been serving.”

The main focus of these programs is helping people stay healthy and independent in their homes as long as possible. This care model says, “let us bring you what you need—or find a way to make it easy for you to get it.”

Heritage Senior Living CommunityHeritage Ministries Management Company provides administrative services to both Heritage Village Retirement Campus and Heritage Village Rehab & Skilled Nursing, Inc. in Gerry, New York. Together, Heritage Village would be defined by New York State as a “Look-Alike” or “Independent Market Rate CCRC.”

Since 1971, Heritage Village has offered the advantages of a CCRC with independent living housing in both cottages and apartments at Heritage Village Retirement Campus, assisted living apartments and services in Bergquist Memorial, and rehab and skilled nursing services at Heritage Village Rehab & Skilled Nursing, Inc.

To meet the demand for independent living housing and new levels of assisted living care, Heritage Ministries recently opened The Woodlands, a Heritage Senior Living Community, on Southwestern Drive in West Ellicott, New York. Independent and assisted living residences are now available for reservation.

The Orchard Grove Residences Assisted Living Program is the first of its kind in Chautauqua County. The goal of this initiative is to offer current and future seniors the ability to age in place, bridging the gap that often divides assisted living and skilled nursing levels of care. Seniors will be able to reside longer in this “small-house” model program than in traditional assisted living facilities.

Beyond HealthcareWCA Infuses $190 Million Into Economy

Article Contributed byWCA Hospital

Insert: “Today, more than 5,000 hospitals of all kinds—urban and rural, large and small—are making their communities healthier in ways that are as diverse as the needs of each community. The men and women who work in hospitals are not just mending patients. Their work extends far beyond the literal and figurative four walls of the hospital to offer free screenings, job training efforts, smoking cessation classes, and so much more to the people of the community . . . often with very little fanfare. Every day in America’s hospitals, there is a tremendous good being done. The instantly recognizable blue and white “H” sign signifies more than a place that patients and families can depend on for care. It signifies the heart of a community. -“COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS: IDEAS & INNOVATIONS FOR HOSPITAL LEADERS,” “AMERICAN HOSPITAL ASSO-CIATION 8TH EDITION, 2013.”

America’s hospitals are about people taking care of people, often at the most vulnerable times in their life—a responsibility that WCA Hospital takes very seriously. Not-for-profit hospitals, like WCA Hospital are distinguished by certain charitable obligations and contributions that improve and strengthen the overall health of the community.

“We have a proud tradition of reaching out to improve the health and well being of those we serve beyond the services we provide,” said Betsy T. Wright, WCA Hospital President/CEO. “The return on our charitable investments is a better quality of life for the people who place their trust in our care. WCA, like many of the area’s health systems, serve as a powerful engine beyond health care. We are a leading force of economic development and activity, infusing mil-lions of dollars back onto our local economy annually.”

WCA Serves As A Safety NetWCA rendered services to patients who were unable to pay bills that amounted to $5,150,528 in 2010 to people who did not or could not pay their bills. With over 216,271 outpatient procedures/visits and 37,090 emergency room visits, WCA serves as a safety net for its region. WCA offers health care to anyone, no matter what their ability to pay. In addition, WCA contributed more than $200,000 to the community for recruiting new physicians; health promotion and disease prevention through our community outreach Wellness Pro-gram; schools of education in Medical Technology and Radiologic Technology; and a Speakers’ Bureau.

A $190 Million Economic EngineIn addition to serving as a safety net, WCA is the second largest em-ployer in Chautauqua County and a prime driver of local, key jobs. WCA pumps over $190 million into the local economy for goods and services annually and supports 1,100 jobs that fund more than $3

million dollars in state and local taxes.

“While our primary mission is to provide the highest quality healthcare to the community, less often recognized is the hospital’s contribution to the local economy,” said Betsy. “As well as being es-sential health care providers in our region, employees are important as consumers, investors and taxpayers.”

Emergency PreparednessFurthermore, WCA is recognized as a leader in emergency prepared-ness. Disaster drills are conducted year round in collaboration with local, state and federal agencies to ensure that WCA is prepared for any disaster. The Emergency Preparedness Committee regularly tests the hospital’s response skills. The hospital also works with the County Emergency Management System and city agencies including the police and fire departments to coordinate a planned response in the event of a real disaster.

Meeting Community Need – Now & Into The FutureAt WCA, we not only serve the community through charitable con-tributions and obligations, but also reach out and work with others to benefit and strengthen the quality of life. We continuously evaluate community health needs based on lifestyle, health habits and chronic disease patterns.

We play an important role in making sure people have access to the healthcare services they need. Throughout the year, free and low cost screenings were made available to the public. An active Speakers’ Bureau provides for WCA experts to present health information to school children, work-sites and community groups.

In keeping with our mission, WCA promotes education and outreach programs related to prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease. Many programs are collaborations with community-based organiza-tions such as:• Local Support Groups• Chautauqua County Cancer Services Program• Susan G. Komen For The Cure, Western New York Affiliate• P2 Of Western New York• Cornell Cooperative Extension• American Cancer Society• Western New York Cancer Network• Tri-County Tobacco Control Program• Chautauqua County Health Network• Community Speaker’s Bureau

Members of WCA’s staff and medical staff contribute hundreds of hours as active volunteers on boards and committees, from the Chamber of Commerce and United Way, to supporting health initia-tives at local colleges and universities. In the last year, the WCA Em-ployee Care and Share Fund donated nearly $19,000 to local agencies that needed our support.

Article Contributed byFrewsburg Rest Home

“At the Frewsburg Rest Home we can offer peace of mind to our resident’s family because we provide love, dignity and respect to our residents,” says Dennis Bechmann, administrator. Residents live without the pressures of household maintenance, lawn care, snow removal, laundry or meal preparation. They receive assistance with medications, bathing and transportation to doctor and dental appointments and are treated with respect; their needs receive the highest priority.

“The family members of our residents sleep with the assurance that their loved ones are well supervised, safe and comfortable,” says Steve Sischo, owner. The

philosophy of the Frewsburg Rest Home was developed 37 years ago by its founder, Joyce Sischo, Steve’s mother. “Every resident is treated just like a member of the family,” adds Steve.

At the Frewsburg Rest Home, seniors enjoy life at its best and most affordable. “Here we are surrounded by friendly people of a similar age and interests and staff who truly care about

meeting our needs,” comments six-year resident Carm Cala. “We also have the time to pursue personal interests. As for me, I love putting together jig saw puzzles and our outings to the casino.”

Residents maintain their independence, coming and going as they please, some with their own automobiles. A Resident Council and Resident Menu Committee assure residents a say in decisions that affect their lives.

The Frewsburg Rest Home is known for its Victorian Charm, sweeping front porch and gazebo. It is within walking distance of downtown Frewsburg and a five minute drive from downtown Jamestown.

The Frewsburg Rest Home for Adults is licensed by the State of New York and regulated by the Department of Health. Competitive rates and no add-on charges for health conditions or care make the Frewsburg Rest Home the affordable leader for quality care and services. Private pay and SSI are accepted.
