Without the support ofPANDA, I don’t think I would have made it.

At PANDA we’re used to having open, honest conversations – for many parents feeling overwhelmed, isolated or ashamed can feel too much and on PANDA’s National Helpline we hear from people every day who are struggling with their emotional health and even thinking of harming themselves or their baby. These thoughts are not uncommon for new mums and are signs that help is needed. We know help is available and PANDA provides a caring first step towards recovery. Perinatal anxiety and depression does not discriminate – it affects people across the community regardless of age, income or geography.

FROM PND TO IRONWOMANPANDA was my first point of call for post natal depression. I didn’t know what to expect from making that call but I’m very happy that I did. - Amy, VIC. Amy used our National Helpline to help her and now she’s

helping us. Amy chose to fundraise for PANDA by participating in the Port Macquarie Ironman event.

WHAT IS LUNCH OUT LOUD?

Lunch Out Loud is an initiative by PANDA to raise awareness and funds for the ongoing support and education of the community regarding perinatal anxiety and depression.

PANDA asks supporters and individuals to organise lunch, brunch, morning tea or a catch up so people can have a real conversation with each other – to talk Out Loud about perinatal anxiety and depression (if they are happy to share their story) or alternatively just enjoy a conversation with friends or colleagues over lunch about the joys and the challanges of parenthood. Funds raised are then donated to PANDA. We would love people to spread the word to understand how common it is to experience perinatal anxiety and depression so they can recognise it quickly and get help.

WHEN CAN I HOLD A LUNCH OUT LOUD?You can hold a Lunch Out Loud event any time throughout the year. October and November are the key times as Lunch Out Loud is designed to coincide with Perinatal Depression and Anxiety Awareness Week in November.

FAQ’s

WHAT IS PERINATAL ANXIETY AND/OR DEPRESSION?When anxiety or depression begins during pregnancy or in the year after birth, it is referred to as perinatal anxiety or perinatal depression. More than 1 in 7 new mums and up to 1 in10 new dads experience postnatal depression each year in Australia. Postnatal anxiety is thought to be as common, and many parents experience anxiety and depression at the same time. Perinatal anxiety and depression can be a frightening and isolating experience as parents try to deal with their symptoms at the same time as planning for or caring for a new baby. There are treatments, supports and services available to help you through this experience. If symptoms last for more than two weeks, it’s time to seek support.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF PERINATAL ANXIETY AND DEPRESSIONThe signs and symptoms of perinatal anxiety and depression can vary and may include:

• Panic attacks (a racing heart, palpitations, shortness of breath, shaking or feeling physically ‘detached’ from your surroundings)

• Persistent, generalised worry, often focused on fears for the health or wellbeing of baby.

• The development of obsessive or compulsive behaviours.

• Increased sensitivity to noise or touch.

• Changes in appetite: under or overeating.

• Sleep problems unrelated to the baby’s needs.

• Extreme lethargy: a feeling of being physically or emotionally overwhelmed and unable to cope with the demands of chores and looking after baby.

For further information please refer to our Fact Sheets, found at www.panda.org.au.If symptoms last for more than two weeks, it’s time to seek support and the free PANDA National Helpline 1300 726 306 can be a great first step.

Thank you!

There were quite a few mums who had suffered from PND and once we

opened up the conversation it was amazing the connections and discussions that ensued.
