INTRODUCTIONTO YOUR GRADING

Well done you have earned enough tip stripes to grade!

With multiple schools in the area Ares Combat operates a policy of rotating the grading locations across all the schools to ensure that no single school is favoured.

Now you are ready to progress to phase 2! Phase 2 is an extremely challenging Phase where you will learn the second form of Wing Chun (Chum Kiu) and how to Chi Sao. So lets test your Phase 1 skills and hopefully get you moving to the next stage.

Once you have registered you will be split into sections. Each section will have a directing staff assigned to them, this is your liaison should you have any questions about grading or simply need advice. Directing staff can be identified by either a red t-shirt or a full red uniform.

Each section will rotate round the three sections of a grading

DisciplineFitnessCombat

As you progress through the belts at Ares the emphasis will shift from one aspect of the grading to another, so for example at present a lot of emphasis is placed to physical fitness as we need to get you to a good level of fitness before you move on to Phase 2. But as you progress higher the emphasis will shift towards Discipline for Phase 2 and then Combat once you are in Phase 3. This is not to say that the other sections are not important, but at your currently level you are able to enhance your results by scoring highly in the fitness sections. Soon this will stop and you will be expected to do equally well across all three sections.

A note to all students on failure

Throughout our lives we are taught that failure is a bad thing, this is an idea you need to rid yourself of. We only truly learn once we have failed at something. If you fail your grading, do not leave disheartened just think to yourself great, now I know where I am good and where I am weak. Now I can train even harder and next time I will not only pass I will pass with a Higher Grade so I can have a Black stripe on my belt!

Parents it is important that children learn to fail, it is also important that as parents we do not chastise them or project our own disappointment on to them, they will in time learn that failure is the greatest tool for progression that a person can possess.

INTRODUCTIONTO YOUR GRADING

Understanding the grading and the belts at Ares

We all know that each student is an individual and as such they should be allowed to progress at their own rate, not forced to move forward when they aren’t ready or held back because other students aren’t ready. So here at Ares we have a unique grading structure that allows for a much more independent progression for each student.

Failure and dealing with failing the grading – At the end of grading those students who did not meet the required standard will be spoken to as a group so that no one is singled out as a failure. We will explain to them that failure is a great learning tool and that everyone fails sometimes. Each student will then be able to review their scorecards and work out where they struggled so that they can increase their focus for next time.

First Degree Pass –

Students who have shown a good level of skill and passed at least two out of the three sections will be awarded their first degree belt. This means they still need to show a lot of focus in class and prove to the instructors that they deserve their new belt.

Higher Degree Pass –

Students who manage to pass all three sections of their grading to an exceptionally high standard (+90%) will be rewarded with a higher degree pass, this singles them out as someone who has achieved an extremely difficult level of skill in the grading and as such on their following grading they will not be able to fail, the lowest level they can achieve is First Degree pass.

Pass –

Students who have passed two or more of their sections and achieved over 80% in total will be rewarded with a full pass. This means they are of a slightly higher standard than their first degree counter parts and as such they will be allowed to do more detailed training in the class from now on.
