“ The true measure of any
community is its willingness and
ability to support the most vulnerable
among us…to weave the all important
safety net which ensures a quality life for
all. You can be an important thread in that
safety net with a gift to the Litehouse
YMCA Capital Campaign as it will ensure
that those children and families in need will
always have access to YMCA facilities and
services and a place where they can learn,
grow and thrive.”

Even though she’s only responsible for one of them, just about every kid in
the neighborhood calls Anita “Grandma.” It’s a role she takes willingly, helping to make sure the
kids at her apartment complex stay out of trouble and are being safe.
This past summer, her granddaughter Arianna and
others from the area were able to participate in the Safety Around Water program at the YMCA. The lessons help introduce children to the water and prepare them for possible emergencies while at a pool, lake or other body of water. “Children feel safer when they know how to do something, especially around water.”
In addition to water safety, the children she looks over were able to receive free lunches and snacks all summer long thanks to the YMCA Summer Meals Program. Anita said the YMCA has been a huge help in the neighborhood, particularly during the summer months to keep the children safe, fed and engaging in healthy activities.
“Three years ago, my parents shoved me, a painfully timid 13-year-old,
through the doors of the YMCA into the Youth and Government program, reassuring me I’d love it. I
was freaking out. I was going to have to form and express my own opinions
and ideas to strangers! What if the other teens and adults can’t understand me? What if I am humiliated by my speech impediment? What if?!
Turns out, my parents were right; I loved the YMCA Youth and Government. My advisors and teammates were incredibly supportive. The more I spoke in front of everyone, the braver I became. I loved it so much that when I got my bill book, I read each of the 400 bills, researching and preparing to debate ideas I believed in. Because of that hard work, I was named Future Congressman at the State Capitol! I went from barely being able to speak to an audience, to speaking to the entire City Council to put my values into law! I became courageous enough to advocate for the YMCA to Congress at the Capitol in D.C. The Y helped me find my voice. The Y helped me blossom.” - Gabby
Years ago, George was visiting his eye doctor when he got the news he had always feared. He was going blind. Damage suffered while serving in the military in Vietnam compounded by a diabetes diagnosis meant George would soon be losing his sight. His optometrist told him he’d have to prepare for a life staying at home and being less active, George set out to make the most of his situation and the YMCA has been an essential part of his journey.
A couple times a week George walks to the Y alongside his service dog, Sampson. YMCA staff make sure
George gets started on the treadmill and then they help him move to the
weight machines. George knows all the effort Y staff go through to make accommodations for him.
“It’s pretty nice that they do this for me, not every place does this and
I would be lost if I couldn’t be here, the YMCA takes good care of me.”
