Everyone loves the thrill of the unknown and some are excited by the idea of going on a treasure hunt, including myself. It’s the excitement of not knowing what lurks around the next corner or what hidden treasures can be captured by exploring the “unknown”. For many who enjoy this riveting excitement, they find themselves experiencing a spellbinding journey to Atlanta, Georgia the second weekend each month for America’s favorite treasure hunt, Scott Antique Markets!

As staff writer, I am fortunate enough to have the opportunity to attend this monthly event and revel in the thrill and excitement that hundreds of thousands experience each month. Up to this point, my trips to the market have been focused on the inside vendors and antiques of the two humongous buildings known as the North and South. Obviously that changed recently when I decided to venture out into the wide open spaces of the court-yard to seek out hidden treasures and the unknown of what lurks around that next corner. A little apprehensive at first, not knowing how the outside vendors would accept me, I spent the day brows-ing through some of the most interesting and beautiful antiques and collectibles I had ever encountered.

As with all other venues, I first walked through to see who and what was there. Walking through I couldn’t contain myself from stopping and browsing while talking with some of the most-friendly and informative vendors. Welcoming all in to browse their spaces is something that led to many sales during the day. Although I stopped to browse, I knew I had to move on and see what was awaiting me in the next aisles before I started taking notes and talking to the vendors. It just seemed to get better aisle by aisle. The excitement I felt was so extreme it was hard for me to stay focused.

On my second trip around, the first thing that really caught my eye was a large display of purple bottles. I was completely captivated by the beauty of these bottles of every shape, form and size. Since I already collect half-pint milk bottles, the thought of any kind of bottle got my heart pumping, especially “purple” bottles. (Purple is mine and my granddaughter’s

favorite color.) Often referred to as “sun purple” glass, this type of glass was very popular at one time in the southwest and is still very collectible with many.

According to vendor Scott Berry, one way to tell if a bottle is “old” is to put it in the sunlight and over time if it turns a lavender hue, then the bottle or glassware was manufactured sometime before 1915. According to research, during the mid

1800s all glass was made using manganese and if left in the sun, it would turn a grayish pink or lavender hue, thus giving it the name “sun purple” glass.

The excitement of the “unknown” coupled with the great adventure of America’s favorite treasure hunt made this one of the most energizing weekends of my life. I not only took home a treasured prize with my Dazey butter churn, but I also took home a wealth of information and history from the knowledgeable vendors. Next time you’re at the market, check out the outside vendors. You won’t be sorry! Who knows what could be lurking around the corner or what treasures you will find hidden under a table or in a cupboard? ABINGDON, Va. - The Martha Washington Inn, perhaps one of the most elegant hotels in the nation with its period antiques and furnishings, was built in 1832. It began as a pri-vate residence for Gen. Francis Preston and his family, which included his wife and nine children. In 1858, it became a college for wealthy young women and was named Martha Washington College.

During the “War Between the States,” schoolgirls became nurses and the grounds became training barracks for the Washington Mounted Rifles. Union and Confederate troops were involved in frequent skirmishes in the area, and the college served as a makeshift hospital for the wounded, both Confederate and Yankee. Despite the devastating effects of the Civil War, the Martha Washington College survived.

However, the Great Depression, typhoid fever and a declin-ing enrollment eventually took its toll. The Martha was closed in 1932, standing idle for several years.

For the next 50 years The Martha was to experience a num-ber of changes in ownership. For a period of time the facility was used to house actors and actresses appearing at the Barter Theatre across the street. Patricia Neal, Ernest Borgnine, and Ned Beatty are but a few of the prominent actors who began their career here … all of whom have later returned to visit

The Martha. The Barter Theatre is today known as the lon-gest-running professional resident theatre in America.

In 1935, The Martha Washington Inn opened as a hotel and today is an elegant hotel, which surrounds its patrons with period antiques and atmosphere. ■

Exhibit examines How Women Made the West

LOS ANGELES — The Autry National Center has organized Home Lands: How Women Made the West, a major exhibition celebrating the enduring spirit of the diverse women of the West. On view at the Autry April 16 to August 22, 2010, Home Lands ventures beyond popular perceptions of the West as an empty wilderness where men struggled against nature to transform the land to offer a rich and real portrait of the West that is in large part unfamiliar. This dynamic re-thinking of the history of the West challenges stereotypes of women’s roles through the stories of the Native American women who first made their homes in the region as well as the women, from many different cultures, who have migrated to the West for hundreds of years.

“The Autry is proud to organize and present Home Lands,” said John Gray, President and CEO of the Autry National Center. “It is our mission to explore the experience of the diverse people of the American West and this provocative exhibition conveys how women have shaped the Western landscape through choices about how to sustain home, family, and community.”

Co-curated by Carolyn Brucken, Associate Curator of Women’s History at the Autry, and Virginia Scharff, Women of the West Chair, Institute for the Study of the American West at the Autry, Home Lands focuses on three regions: northern New Mexico, the Colorado Front Range, and Puget Sound, Washington. Exploring a specific theme for each place—earth for Northern New Mexico; transportation for the Colorado Front Range; and water for Puget Sound— the exhibition highlights the West’s remarkable cultural diversity; the role of the environment in women’s lives; and the ways in which women responded to and inevitably shaped their environs.

Home Lands challenges stereotypes of the Western woman, such as the pioneer wife and the cowgirl, with stories of such women as Dr. Justina Ford, the first African American woman doctor in Colorado; noted educator, home economist and author Fabiola Cabeza de Baca of New Mexico; and Bertha Knight Landes, mayor of Seattle from 1926 to 1928 and the first female mayor of a major American city.

The exhibition illustrates their extraordinary stories and many more with nearly 200 objects spanning more than 1,200 years. From a Mogollon metate (grinding stone), circa A.D. 750-1150, to a 20th century station wagon— textiles and historic clothing from the 18th through the 20th centuries; ancient and modern pottery; paintings, photography, and sculpture by historic and contemporary women artists; books, photographs, and other ephemera will be featured through-out the exhibition. More than two-thirds of the exhibition is

drawn from the Autry’s collections.Exhibition Tour: October 2010 through January 2011,

Missouri History Museum, St. Louis, Mo.; February through May 2011: Gilcrease Museum of the Americas, Tulsa, Okla.; June through September 2011: Palace of the Governors, New Mexico History Museum, Santa Fe, New Mexico. ■

GURNEE, Ill., – The Gurnee Antique Center, LLC houses 200 dealer spaces of quality merchandise in a comfortable and spacious 24,000 square foot environment. The Center offers a wide range of antiques and fine collectibles from the 18th to the mid 20th centuries.

Shoppers will find: Americana and primitives; furniture inc. Early American Country, Arts & Crafts/Mission, and Victorian; folk art; porcelain; pottery; silver; paintings; crystal, depression, and art glass; vintage costume and fine jewelry; mid-century modern; jukeboxes; Native Americana; military memorabilia; World’s Fair and souvenir items; advertising; etc.

You name it - you will likely find it here. The Center was designed and built by Luan and Jerry

Watkins, after years of collecting and exhibiting across America, as the kind of antique center they envisioned as a place they would like to shop.

A paradise for the collector and decorator, as well as the casual shopper, it boasts wide aisles, spacious bathrooms, excellent parking, and a friendly and service-oriented staff. Every aisle has a pull-cord which, when activated, signals the sales staff that customer assistance is needed - no need to search for a sales associate.

Unlike many “antique” malls, the Gurnee Antique Center strives to sell true antiques and no reproductions. To aid its dealers and customers alike, two showcases of “fakes” and reproductions are prominently displayed at the front of the store; some of which could fool even antique “veterans”. In

addition, there is an extensive library available to customers. These reference books may also be purchased.

A large barn-like red structure visible from I-94, the Center is located in Gurnee, seconds from Six Flags Great America, Key Lime Cove Hotel & Water Park, and the Gurnee Mills Shopping Center - activities for the whole family abound throughout the area. The Naval Training Center, Great Lakes and numerous restaurants and hotels are just minutes away. A monthly Antique & Flea Market is held at the nearby Lake County Fairgrounds.

Now in its second successful decade, the Gurnee Antique Center welcomes antiquers and seekers of the rare, beautiful, and unusual to the greater Chicagoland Area and the Gateway to Wisconsin. ■
