Vicar’s letter— Religion is in the news again. Strange that even as the death-knell of organised religion is tolled once more our papers make it front-page headlines and the airways broadcast it high on the news agenda. Editors know their readership and their audience; and their assessment is: this is what our readers want to read about, what our listeners want to hear debated. In other words, this is important to people. This morning, I heard a debate on national radio between Professor Richard Dawkins and the Reverend Giles Fraser on new research which claims that ‘most of those who describe themselves as Christian in Britain have only a low level of belief and practice of the religion’. According to the professor, ‘religion is ... largely irrelevant, even to those who still label themselves Christian ... faith is a spent force in the UK.’ Then I come across this: ‘Christianity is in grave danger of being marginalised, Britain's only Muslim cabinet minister will tell the Vatican today.’ So runs the headline even as we are still digesting the news last week of a ‘landmark’ legal ruling ‘banning’ (note the emotive language!) the saying of prayers as part of the formal agenda at council meetings. Baroness Warsi ‘will call for faith to be given proper space in public life. “People need to feel stronger in their religious identities, more confident in their beliefs,” she will say. And this morning a flyer drops on my doormat with the good news that, despite recent press reports, Mylor Methodist Chapel is very far from a spent force and closure is not on their agenda: of course, as all denominations know only too well, ministry and mission and giving of time and/or money all go together. As the saying goes, Use it or lose it. It is almost as if, the more we Christians have tried in the last fifty years for outreach and transparency, the less we have excited and connected with people. Mind you, the world is a far different place now than it was when I first struggled to get to grips with what Jesus Christ had to say to me. As with most organisations, Christians have found that active membership has plummeted and opportunities in today’s culture to ‘build up the body of the church’ have declined. Ash Wednesday fell this week: I pray that we may all find this Lent an opportunity to explore further what it’s all about, perhaps by attending a service or two, or by following a course or discussion group. In the meantime, a hint from each of our latest retired bishops. I was reminded of this good counsel from Bishop Bill just this week. His advice to congregations when approaching the rail to share in the supper of our Lord, Take someone with you. And I often think of Bishop Roy remembering how seriously he always took – from whatever the source – the injunction: Say one for me.

Another Eden: On Friday 13th January the whole School headed for the Eden Project. After a gloomy December and a dull start to January we set off on a beautiful sunny day (who says Friday 13th is unlucky?) When we arrived the Infant children headed straight to the ice-rink. There were sledges, cars, rocking horses, balls and buckets and spades for the children to use. There was even some snow. The children played on the snow for an hour being towed around the ice by the teachers and each other. They had the most amazing time. The look on their faces was a pleasure to see. Meanwhile the Junior children had an opportunity to look around the biomes before their twelve o’clock skate. At just before twelve it was all hands on deck to get the children booted up and ready for the ice. The children had forty minutes skating and it was wonderful to watch them grow with confidence during the session. Mind you we did have a few experts on the ice and it was definitely not the adults. We were very pleased to leave the ice with only a few minor grazes and bumps. It was such a lovely warm day that those that wanted to were able to have a picnic outside. The final visit for most of the children was the tropical biome and it certainly was tropical that day, it was like walking into another world. All the children had an amazing day and all look forward to the trip again next year. You just need to look around the school and see the writing that has been done by the children about the trip to know what a magical day it is for the whole school, staff included. The children have written in a range of genres including poetry, reporting and information writing. Their work has been superbly displayed with a variety of 3D artwork. It really is a great activity for the whole school community each year. We subsidise the trip by about 50% using our private fund. We have photographs on our big TV screens to remind us about a really good day out. Jackie Cottle

Tony Andrew: We were very sad to hear of the death of Tony Andrew on 16th February. As Chairman of the Parish Council, his contribution to the local community has been immense during a long life of unstinting service. The news arrived just as the magazine was going to press. we will be providing more detailed coverage next month.

Rural Dean: Revd Geoffrey Bennett (far right), Vicar of St. Budock, was installed as the new Rural Dean, South Carnmarth Deanery, by Bishop Tim Thornton, Bishop of Truro, at a ceremony held at St Budock Church on January 25th. Geoffrey replaces Father John Harris of St Gluvias Church, who retired in January.

Mylor Movies in the Tremayne Hall at 7.30 pm (tickets £4.50 at the door)

My week with Marilyn 28th March (12A): Directed by Simon Curtis, starring Michelle Williams, Eddie Redmayne and Kenneth Branagh. Colin Clark, a young film student, has inveigled his way onto the film set and documents the tense interaction between Sir Laurence Olivier and Marilyn Monroe during production of The Prince and the Showgirl. Marilyn invites him into her inner world where she struggles with her fame, her beauty and her desire to be a great actress.

The Iron Lady 18th April (12A): Directed by Phyllida Lloyd and starring Meryl Streep, Jim Broadbent and Richard E Grant. Tells the story of how Margaret Thatcher smashed through the barriers of gender and class to be heard in a male-dominated world. The story concerns power and the price that is paid for power, and is a surprising and insightful portrait of an extraordinary and complex woman. Michael J-J

Many hands: A working party gathered at All Saints in sub-zero temperature on February 2nd armed with shovels and rakes to take delivery of five large bags of gravel. The wet winter weather had left the drive to the mission church in poor condition so, led by Elliot & Roger Nicholls, in good spirits and warm sunshine, (and supported by Jenny Nicholls with hot coffee and chocolate biscuits) the team soon raked the gravel smooth. Thanks to all for their labour and to the Friends of St Mylor Churches for enabling this improvement.

Cockwells celebrate two major successes. First for the Duchy 27 ’s highly commended nomination at the Motor Boat and Yachting Awards Evening held at the Savoy Hotel during the London Boat Show, and second for two more signed contracts for the Duchy 27

which together are worth more than £300,000. Both sales were gained at the London Boat Show in January and construction has already begun at t Mylor Creek Boatyard. Due to the heavy winter refit schedule, current new builds, and the Duchy sales plus a contract to build a new 9 metre superyacht tender (right), Cockwells are now recruiting for shipwrights and a project manager. The Duchy 27, a semi-production motor launch fitted with a 200hp Toyota-based Nanni diesel engine capable of 25 knots, was displayed out of the water in the Boardwalk section of the London show. One couple from the Isle of Wight came to see the Duchy 27 ‘in the flesh’ after their interest had been piqued by many positive reviews since its launch

by HRH the Princess Royal in Cornwall in July 2011. So impressed with build quality, performance figures and layout, they made their order the same day. Another visitor, enamoured with the Duchy 27 at last year’s Southampton Boat Show, made the trip to the London show especially to make his purchase.

Mylor Local History Group: On Saturday March 24th we have the last talk of the season in the Tremayne Hall starting at 7pm. Last Autumn, Dr Terry Chapman gave a very informative, illustrated talk on the Enys Estate and its Influence on Mylor to a group of invited Cornwall local historians. Many Mylor people said that they would like to hear the talk and so we have the chance to hear a similar one - with the addition of some very exciting old photographs. Dr Chapman is a member of the Enys research group and is helping to reveal the contents of some amazing documents recently made available. We provide refreshments afterwards. It has been good to see so many linger over these; either talking with other members, visitors or the speaker. If you haven’t been to one of the evenings yet, do come on the 25th for a talk with such a local theme. Then, on 21st April, we have an extra event this year. At 7pm there will be a social occasion where we have a Cornish flavour both in the entertainment and in the refreshments. Roger Bennett and his wife Viv, dressed in Cornish Tartan, will present some History of Cornwall. They will sing and play both traditional and original music. I have known Roger for 60 years! He has been a very successful drama teacher writing his own short musical plays with often historical themes and with his wife has been entertaining in the county at events both large and small. Roger is Looe’s town crier, so you will be able to hear him!! This will be a very good evening and we will only be charging £3.00 for members and £3.50 for non-members. Jill Quilliam

Methodist Art Collection: Truro School are hosting an exhibition of the Methodist Art Collection in their Heseltine Gallery from 23rd February until 8th April. This is a unique opportunity to see a comprehensive exhibition of work by a wide range of artists. It is open to the public free of charge from 7pm to 9pm Monday to Thursday and 11am to 4pm on Saturdays. Further details can be seen at www.truroschool.com/the-methodist-art-collection

Mylor Book Group: People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks was a member’s recommendation and the evening group thoroughly enjoyed the choice. In 1996 Hanna Heath, an Australian rare book expert, is offered the job of a lifetime: analysis and conservation of the famous Sarajevo Haggadah, rescued from Serbian shelling during the Bosnian war. Priceless and beautiful, the book is one of the first Jewish volumes ever to be illuminated with images. When Hannah discovers a series of tiny artefacts in its ancient binding she begins to unlock the book’s mysteries. The writer tells vividly of the of the book’s journey from its salvation back to its creation via Bosnia, Vienna, Venice, Barcelona and Seville. Combined with Hannah’s own family history this is an intriguing tale that made us want to read more by the author. The Slap by Christos Tsiolkas was the afternoon group’s controversial book . What a start to a new year! It divided opinion amongst the members and we definitely needed our tea and cake by the end of the discussion. After over two years both groups are flourishing and oversubscribed. Sadly we have had to turn some interested readers away as there is an optimum number of members to any book group. Jean Webster

The Mylor Singers held their AGM on Tuesday 24th January, in the Mylor Methodist School Room where they hold their rehearsals. Unfortunately, the President, Mrs Maureen Walkey, was not well enough to attend. Everyone wished her well. The Chairman, Mrs. Irene Gardiner, presided over the meeting, welcoming everyone and thanking them very much for their hard work and dedication to the choir, thanking especially Mrs Bridget Westlake, the choir's Musical Director. The Choir had had a very successful year, performing at many venues old and new. Four new members had been

warmly welcomed. At the AGM it was agreed that the proceeds of the choir's two Tremayne Hall Concerts, in June and at Christmas, should be kept and totalled up at the end of the year and then distributed to local charities, with any residue being kept by the choir for new sheet music, which can be very expensive. To help raise funds a Beetle Drive in the Parish Hall was suggested, plus two Coffee Mornings a year. The choir has already been approached to perform six concerts this year. If anyone would like a singing lesson every Tuesday evening, 7.30pm at The Methodist School Room, please do come along or telephone the Secretary, Mrs Gill Stevenson on 373736. We should like to have one more soprano for an absolutely perfect balance, so, if you are out there, we need you! You will be very warmly welcomed. Irene Gardiner

Chapel News: On 26th January Rev Peter Facer led an Extraordinary Church Council meeting in the Methodist Chapel to discuss ways in which the much needed monies required to keep the Chapel open could be found. To this end a sub-committee was proposed and a number present agreed to form this committee. The Chapel needs to find £2000 before the end of the financial year this August and additional funds year on year unless congregation numbers increase significantly. There were some suggestions for raising funds, but success would require the continued support of the village and all the outside help we could muster. A flier will be produced and delivered to every household in the village with contact numbers and information of Sunday services etc. Further reports will be shown in this magazine. The Women's World Day of Prayer will be held in this Chapel on 2nd March at 2.30pm.

Wood Mouse Hedgehog

The first of a two part animal tracks and signs guide: How many of these can you find in mud or sand? It is the patterns that matter.... And if the print is not sharp the overall shape and claw marks are good to use. The dog and the fox are hardest to distinguish. You should be able to find them all except the hedgehog who is hibernating at this time of year. Give it a go! Next time it’s tooth marks in hazelnuts. Dorrit Smith

Mylor Christmas Lights: Christmas has by now become a distant memory for most of us but the Lights Committee were once again very glad to receive many complimentary opinions on our displays. But behind the scenes we suffered several equipment failures which have forced us to scrap several older units. We now must start addressing the problem of how to replace them. The issue becomes money. We have ideas on what we would like to do. Nothing ambitious, but experience has shown us that buying the cheapest equipment proves to be a false economy when we want to be able to reuse our equipment year on year. Our next priority is to start raising funds before next Christmas which will help us plan what we might achieve. As our first fundraising idea for this year, we have organised a concert by our ever popular Nankersey Male Voice Choir (see the advert on page 11). This will be a wonderful opportunity to enjoy our own very popular traditional Cornish male choir. We have been very fortunate to find a slot in their performing diary. Please come along to enjoy yourself and support your Christmas Lights into the bargain. Tony Deacon

Cross of St Piran: It is with enormous pleasure that we announce that Eileen Humphrey has been chosen by the Bishop of Truro to receive the Cross of St Piran. This is awarded annually to a few very special people in the Diocese of Truro, first introduced last year by Bishop Tim in much-needed recognition of outstanding service for the good of others. Who could be more worthy of this award that Eileen, a member of St. Mylor Church since the 1970s, who has worked tirelessly for the church and the community, and for many years the mainstay of the Junior Church? Now in her eighties, a member of a close and loving family and a great-grandmother four times over, she continues to work tirelessly to maintain the smooth running of St Mylor – and with her close friends Jean Nicholls and Jean Marsden regularly visits those who through ill health are unable to continue to worship at St Mylor or All Saints churches. Bishop Tim will present the St Pirans Cross, each one handmade in hallmarked silver based on a design by Revd Ann Butcher, to those chosen at a ceremony at St Piran’s Church, Perranzubuloe on Sunday 4th March at 18.30. Transport is being arranged to take parishioners to the ceremony – please contact me on 259909 if you would like to share in this celebration. Judy Menage

St Mylor Churchyard Restoration Group: The past few weeks have been dry but bitterly cold. We have spent time tidying up the Churchyard and burning up rubbish. Some of the old Yew trees edging the Ganges Memorial and the Garden of Remembrance have been tidied up and we hope to be able to encourage them to grow to a shape. They have been badly maintained in the past so we have an opportunity to put that right. During the tidying up of this area we came across bags of sand, cement and gravel as well as some paving slabs as well as some scaffold type poles – similar to the rails used alongside the path from the Lychgate. It would seem that sometime in the past someone attempted to build an additional set of steps in the Ganges area. We also found a notice in amongst the rubbish saying “Undertaker materials” but assume that was from some time ago looking at the state of the sign and bags of materials. We have identified an area alongside the Naval Burial ground that is suitable for burning up rubbish. We have placed one of our fire-baskets there, alongside the road bank, and ask that any burnable rubbish is deposited here ready for us to dispose of. The dustbin and green compost area will remain adjacent to the Trinnick Building. Our Fentongollen daffodils are beginning to appear and we already have primroses, camellias and early daffodils in flower. The newly uncovered grave of Jonas Symonds has created much interest. We have learnt that Polglaze House is now known as The Woodlands. It sits outside Mylor Bridge on the road to Penryn and is privately owned. Jonas Symonds and the Symonds family tenanted the house for a couple of generations. The name Polglaze means “Blue Pool” and the land originally belonged to Glasney College. There is a lake within the grounds and this was known as the Abbot’s Fish Pond. We have been busy sawing up fallen branches and have bagged up the logs and placed these close to the Bell Tower. Each bag costs £1 and money can be put through the hole in the Bell Tower door. We are in need of more suitable bags and would welcome any used small fertilizer/garden peat strong plastic bags. Bags can be put into the Trinnick Building.

Mylor Gardening Club: At the February meeting the club was lucky enough to have Elizabeth Reeves who gave a very interesting talk on The Plant Hunters, including David Douglas who introduced the Douglas Fir to this country and the Lobb brothers who worked for the Lemons at Carclew. On12th March Cilla George presents a talk on Trevano, past & present.. This is a change to the previously advertised programme. At this meeting please remember to bring the bulbs that were given out in October for judging. Maggie Farley

More about Noel Ashton: I loved Val's piece about Noel Ashton in the December issue. In 1955, my parents moved to Flushing and a shared interest in music brought Noel and me together from the start. We spent a huge amount of time together, often in the company of John Winter, then Assistant Organist at the Cathedral. While still a teenager, I became the Musical Director of the Nankersey Singers (now the Nankersey Male Voice Choir), and when Muriel Barnicoat retired as accompanist, I persuaded Noel to play for us. For five years we worked in a very harmonious partnership, and the Singers grew in numbers as well as musicality. During this period, Noel retired as organist at Penwerris Church, Falmouth in order to play at Mylor — a position once held by his father. Noel asked me to return the favour he had done for me by taking over at Penwerris (where I remained organist for four years). When I finally went away to resume my university studies, it was natural that I should ask Noel to wield the baton for Nankersey. This he did magnificently for thirty years, fashioning the Singers into the magnificent choir it is today. David Eastburn

The Friends of St. Mylor held their Annual Parish Lunch on Saturday 11th February, this was a very successful event even though numbers were down on other years due to various reasons, i.e. Holidays and other commitments, but it was still a very happy atmosphere where everybody seemed to enjoy themselves. The menu was a 3-course lunch with committee members making various delicious sweets followed by coffee and chocolates. My thanks to all those who helped and all who attended. As you have probably seen elsewhere in the magazine the Friends AGM will be held in All Saints Church on Monday the 5th March, I look forward to seeing you all then. Pamela Cartwright, Chairperson

Gig grant: January saw the start of the construction of an oar and boat equipment storage box for Nankersey Rowing Club. The Club store their gigs Serafina and Circe at Windsports at Mylor Harbour and up until now equipment has been kept in the gigs. However, the club were awarded £300 from Mylor Parish Council to go towards the costs of building a new box which is being carried out by a couple of club members. Chairman Anne Oliver said 'we are delighted to have been awarded the money from the Parish Council, we are not lucky enough to have a club house, so to be able to store all of our kit properly and safely next to the gigs will be great'. The club is busy preparing for the world pilot gig championships in May, taking five crews to compete. Anyone interested in joining the club as a supporter or rower can contact Anne on 376922 or check out the club website www.nankerseyrowingclub.com

More About ~ Betty Custance At first meeting it is hard to believe that as a young woman Betty had become a dispatch rider for the Wrens (WRNS) during the war. She now lives in Lemon Hill Gardens and enjoys the quiet village life of Mylor, but she told me how a willingness to join up at the start of WW2 led to an exciting and dangerous time in her life. Betty grew up in Muswell Hill, north London and after school she took a secretarial course before gaining a good job, working for the super-intendent of Spitalfield Market. Throughout this time she experienced some of the worst bombing of the war. Sadly her brother, Brian died young at the start of the war. As a young Royal Naval driver of 18 he suffered severe stress brought on by the shocking experiences of Dunkirk beaches and consequently became seriously ill. This tragically resulted in his premature death. Betty was determined to join the Wrens at about the age of 17 and after initial interviews she was asked if she could ride a motor bike. When she said ‘no’, but was willing to learn, she was asked to become part of a group of ten girls for training, all of whom had agreed that they at least knew how to ride a bicycle. They then spent several exciting months practising their driving skills around Kent and stopping for lunch at transport cafes. She remembered how much fun they had playing the juke boxes in the cafes, listening to the popular songs and captivating swing music of Glenn Miller. Once they had qualified, the girls were billeted around the country and Betty was sent to Grimsby where she began the serious business of carrying important documents. This had to be done in all weathers and Betty described the heavy waterproof coats, pith helmets, goggles and boots with leather shin pads. She wore navy jodhpurs and later, when she could afford it, she had clothes made to measure, which were more comfortable. Betty met and married her husband John during the war but carried on with her work as a dispatch rider. John was a Naval First Lieutenant. He was with

the landing craft at Dunkirk and spent two dreadful days sheltering in bomb craters before being rescued. After the war Betty continued with her secretarial work and in later life came to Mylor to help her daughter Sally who was running the Penmere guest house. Sally and her brother Andy have both been very helpful to Betty recently after she had a fall and broke a hip. Fortunately she is making good progress and with her determination and fighting spirit it is really not too difficult to imagine her speeding around on her dispatch bike!

Bigger: Despite this edition being the biggest ever, several items had to be held over until the April edition due to pressure of material. The crème brûlée recipe will appear next time to complete the 3 courses! Changes: The Mylor Mag is evolving into a publication under the aegis of the newly formed Mylor Community Publications Group. In the following note David Eastburn, on behalf of the Trustees, explains the background and mechanics of these changes. MC The Mylor Magazine, previously published by the PCC of St Mylor and All Saints churches, has now been transferred to the people of Mylor parish. We are grateful to the PCC for creating a strong and viable team producing a community magazine of high quality and with a sound financial base. The Magazine will now be published under the auspices of the Mylor Community Publications Group (MCPG) which will be administered by a management committee (‘Trustees’) representing the whole community of our parish. Anyone with an active interest in the magazine (or any other publication for which from time to time the group wish to support), is welcome to join the group; there is no fee or subscription. Members will be encouraged to attend meetings of the group, including the AGM, when they will be able to nominate and vote for Trustees to serve on the management committee. Currently, these Trustees are Chris Perkins (chairman), Revd Roger Nicholls, M.A. (secretary), Tony Andrew and David Eastburn. As required by the provisional constitution, Roger Nicholls and Tony Andrew are Trustees by virtue of the offices they hold – namely, Priest in Charge at St Mylor and Chairman of the Parish Council. Taken together, we believe these four will provide a smooth transition as Mylor Magazine metamorphoses from a church publication to one owned and run by the community at large. A formal provisional constitution has been drawn up and is available from the secretary of the MCPG, (Revd Roger Nicholls), to whom applications for membership of the group should also be made. This provisional constitution will be presented to the members for approval at the first general meeting of the group (probably in January 2013). Meanwhile, the group will continue to operate under its terms and conditions. We hope you will continue to find this and future issues of the Mylor Magazine filled with articles of general and local interest, as well as features highlighting the activities of the people, clubs, societies and organisations (both spiritual and secular) within our area. David Eastburn
