The Individuals with Disabilities Act(IDEA) In summary, this is the act that promises free and appropriate

and placement of their child, and the provision of FAPE (a free appropriate public education) to their child

Give or deny their consent before the school may take certain action with respect to their child

Last but not least, to disagree with decisions made by the school system on those issues

Individualized Education Plan(IEP) An IEP or is a legal document that describes the

educational services a student receives. It includes all of the following The students current academic and behavior level. The goal(s) the student is working towards. The plan of how student and teacher will work to achieve

plan.IFSP (Individual Family Service Plan) is similar to IEP, but it

includes the child’s family as well. Problems? There is no single format for creating an IEP, they

can vary in detail from school to school.

Inclusion

Inclusion is a term which expresses commitment to educate each child, to the maximum extent appropriate, in the school and classroom he or she would otherwise attend.

It involves bringing the support services to the child (rather than moving the child to the services) and requires only that the child will benefit from being in the class (rather than having to keep up with the other students). Proponents of inclusion generally favor newer forms of education service delivery.

In regular terms, children with disabilities are left in the classroom with children who do not have disabilities for all or some of the time.

Inclusion remains a controversial concept in education because it relates to educational and social values, as well as our sense of individual worth.

Response To Intervention(RTI) The RTI is a three tiered model to assess students and is used as

an alternative option to determine if a student is eligible for special education.

In Tier 1 All students are screened and receive excellent research based

instruction in the general education classroom. Their progress is monitored weekly and those who are unresponsive to this move to the next tier.

Tier 2 and 3 Tier 2 includes more intensive instruction. Instruction is in small groups

by a teacher or highly trained assistant. Their progress is monitored more often than in Tier 1. If this doesn’t work, students move to next tier.

Tier 3 they receive the most intensive intervention by a special education professional. Then placement occurs based on their IEP, and their progress is monitored more frequently.
