Y O U R E L B O W VA L L E Y V I E W I APRIL 2011 7

Most pet owners are familiar with the old maxim that your dog or cat lives seven years for every one of our years. In some large and giant breed dogs the differ-ence is even more extreme, with some breeds having an average life expectancy of seven years. This makes it critical that your pet gets an annual physical examina-tion. Some veterinarians have chosen less frequent vac-cination protocols for their patients, this unfortunately often means some pets do not get their annual exam. Many people have equated the annual veterinary visit with “shots”, and believe a pet not receiving a vaccine, can skip the trip to the vet. Unfortunately we know this perception will place many pets at risk.

Your pet’s annual trip to the veterinarian usually starts with a history. The veterinarian will ask questions about diet, exercise, changes in energy levels, drinking, pee-ing, and pooping. The animal should be weighed. Any changes in weight will lead to questions as to why the weight has changed. Unexplained weight loss usually leads to a veterinarian recommending blood testing and urine tests to check for kidney disease, liver disease, and diabetes, just to mention a few causes of weight loss.

My examination starts with just watching the pet as I go through the last year’s history with “Mom or Dad”. I look to see if the pet’s interested in my presence or is the pet lethargic and uncaring? Is the coat shiny, are the eyes bright? I watch how the pet moves around. I stroke a dog or cat on the table and get an initial impression. This impression of health or disease is for me, the differ-ence between the science and the art of medicine. Not everything can be quantified.

My active physical examination starts with the head and goes to the tail whether I am examining a ferret, dog, cat, bird, snake, fish, cow or anything else you can mention. Ears, eyes, nose, mouth, teeth, beak, gums are looked at. Veterinarians are your pet’s dentists as well and with pets living longer they need healthy teeth and gums

longer, and dental disease hurts! A thorough examina-tion of the teeth is critical. As I work my way back on the animal, lymph nodes are palpated. I am sensitive to a pet flinching if I touch somewhere painful. Do the ears, breath, or skin stink? Do I hit an area of increased heat? When I reach the chest I listen with my stethoscope to the lungs, and heart. I watch the animal breathe. If this was a cow I’d listen to the stomachs. I look at the fur, nails, scales, hooves, and feathers. Animals get breast cancer! I check for lumps and bumps everywhere and may measure old ones to see if they have grown. I pal-pate or feel the abdomen. I check the pet’s temperature. I check testicles and all intact males get their prostates checked. I only skip a part of the physical examination if fear or ferocity on the part of my patient makes it im-possible.

This constitutes most of a general physical if your pet is healthy. Here you thought I was just stroking your pet! If you have mentioned a specific concern I may need to do further tests or probe an area deeper, such as a limb that you saw the dog limp on. I may put drops in the eyes, do a swab of the skin or ears, or collect blood and urine. We do recommend an annual fecal examination for parasites. If your pet is healthy, it is only at this point that any vaccinations necessary are administered, but for me and your pet the annual physical examination was the most important part of your visit.

On a personal note I rewrote this article because I likely lost my father early when his general practitioner did not practice preventative medicine. He received neither a thorough annual physical examination nor proper blood screens, even though he was frequently in his doctor’s office. Your veterinarian and your own general medical practitioner are there to not only treat problems but to try to prevent disease or detect it early enough to give both us and our pets’ long and healthy lives.

Growing your own food is the top trend for 2011. Not

only are you in control of exactly what you grow, but also how you grow it. You select the soil mix and what herbicides/pesticides you use or don’t use.

Square Foot Gardening is raised vegetable gardening with a twist. Instead of digging down into chal-lenging Calgary soil, we are building up. We use 2” x 6” lumber to create boxes made of cedar (can be also be made of vinyl, stone or composite wood – basically any material except pressure treated lumber). We fill the boxes with a soil mix of equal parts

of peat moss, vermiculite and blended compost (use triple mix and sea soil). These boxes can be placed on exist-ing soil, sod, a concrete patio or even a deck. Ensure you include a weed barrier and proper drainage.

A typical sized box for square foot vegetable gardening is 4’ x 4’. One box includes a grid that will distin-guish 16 planting areas that are 1’ x 1’. Within each square, seeds or seed-lings will be planted. An example of a planting in one square is: 1 head of Cauliflower, 4 lettuces, 9 plantings of spinach or 16 carrots. You can liter-ally grow 16 different crops within a 4’ x 4’ area. One box of this size can feed one person for an entire season – all within a 4’ x 4’ area!

My inspiration for this concept is from the creator of Square Foot Gardening – Mel Bartholomew. His book has urged me to build a few boxes and try it at Spruce It Up Gar-den Centre this spring. It is a vegeta-ble gardening concept that is not as daunting as conventional row gar-dening that I have tried in the past. Hope you join me on the journey this season and grow your own food!

Mel Bartholomew’s book and more information are available at Spruce It Up Garden Centre.

Have you ever thought about why you like or don’t like certain colors, or what a certain color means to you? Col-ors cause a psychological and physiological response that is different for everyone, based on your past experi-ence. This is why it is so very important to know what certain colors mean to everyone.

There are typical feelings and reactions that are spon-taneous to certain colors that the designer learns, but for the most part, it can be very subjective. They can make us feel good, or bad, warm or cold, comfortable or uncomfortable. There are also cultural differences; we in the Western culture use white to symbolize pu-rity and piety, in Asia it is a symbol of mourning. When working for California Closets, a Chinese client was buy-ing a home from a builder. She loved the home, but was really turned off by the colors used in the show home. They had decorated in a navy blue color scheme. This color to her culture was the color they used at funer-als. Fortunately she was able to see past the color and see that she could color her home differently, but most people won’t allow it to go that far. In one of the show homes, we were redecorating and allowed people to go through during the process. The designer had chosen a bright, but soft yellow for the main color scheme. Peo-ple would enter and do an about face turn. The reaction was so severe, that we had to stop people from going through until it was complete. When all was said and done, they loved it!

When choosing your color scheme, it should be very personal, to bring out your personality. However, if you want to appeal to the masses, you must take into ac-count how color affects everyone.

Spinach & Strawberry Salad with PecansFresh, crisp salads provide a bright and colourful addition to meals, and given the range of salad greens available in grocery stores and farmers’ markets, salads don’t have to be boring.

Dress salads lightly to allow the fl avour of the greens to come through, and choose wooden utensils if possible to toss the salad, as metal utensils can bruise the leaves.

This is a simple salad, quick and easy to prepare, and it’s packed with healthy nutrients!

Salad ingredients:3 – 4 cups fresh, washed, baby spinach1 ½ cups fresh strawberries, washed and sliced½ cup pecan halves or pieces2 – 3 tablespoons crumbled goat cheese – optional

Dressing ingredients:¼ cup extra virgin olive oil2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar3 teaspoons granulated sugarDash onion powderDash garlic powderDash dry mustardSalt & Pepper

Directions:In a large salad bowl, toss spinach, sliced strawberries, pecans and crumbled cheese.Whisk the oil, vinegar, sugar, onion powder, garlic powder and dry mustard together; drizzle the dressing over the salad and toss lightly.Finish with freshly ground pepper and Maldon sea salt to taste.Serves 6

Variations:• Substitute blue cheese for goat cheese• Substitute sesame seeds and poppy seeds for the pecan halves

– approximately 2 tablespoons of each• Experiment with cayenne pepper or chili pepper fl akes rather

than using black pepper for some added “heat”

This year marks the 10th season of the award winning Vegetable Garden at Fort Calgary. This community gar-den showcases various types of heirloom vegetables that can be grown in Calgary and also uses ecological gardening techniques. It symbolizes the historic NWMP garden that once existed at Fort Calgary.

I decided to cut two branches off my hibiscus - I want to make my plant more full so I cut it back quite a bit. Now I am going to root those two branches and then I will plant them back in the same pot with the main plant. I cut the branches during the waxing moon, and once those cuttings have rooted I will pot them during the 1st or 2nd quarter.

‘Waxing’ is the increasing light of the sun on the surface of the moon - the period between the New Moon and the Full Moon. This phase is associated with plant growth and pro-liferation - it is during this time that the gravitational pull of the moon is at its strongest - pulling water into the stalks and leaves.

This is the best time to:1. Take cuttings2. Transplant and pot3. Water4. Gather herbs (the oil content is more concentrated)

On the other hand, if you want to encourage rooting or control growth, these activities are best done during the waning moon - I’ll be talking about that next month.
