Happy Easter
The finals of the House General Knowledge Competitions took place in front of an audience of Years 3 to 8, on Friday afternoon with the semi final matches having taken place earlier in the week.
Both the senior and junior events were exciting and fiercely contested. The honours in both competitions, however, went to School House. Congratulations to all eight teams for a great competition, and in particular to: Ayla Sables, Joshua Chapman, Nathan Brown, William Apsey, Ella Tyrrell, Alex Main, Guy Miller and Max Ballentine.
General Knowledge Competitions
We wish all our children, parents and staff a very happy Easter and a restful holiday. We look forward to seeing everyone in the Summer term which starts for staff on Monday 16th April and for children on Tuesday 17th April.
Friday morning was an opportunity for our public speakers to compete in the annual House Public Speaking competition.House teams consisted of three members who each spoke on their chosen topic for two minutes before facing two questions: one from the panel of three judges and one from the floor. Speakers were judged on the content of their speech, the clarity of their presentation, engagement with the audience, ability to think on their feet and answer questions and their timing (they were penalised for going too much under or over the two minute mark). As well as teams competing for the House Shield, a prize was awarded for the best individual speaker.Judges had a very tough job but in the end the winning house was Kingsley (Sam Rowe, Poppy Treacher and Jamie Yates) and the top three individual speakers were

A few reminders about summer uniform:
Summer uniform for girls is the regulation summer dress with white socks.
Boys may wear grey shorts and grey short socks. If they would like to be in short sleeves then they will need to wear proper short sleeved shirts. Long sleeves rolled up are not acceptable, so children wearing long sleeves will have to keep them rolled down. Boys are also expected to wear their ties in school unless given specific permission by the class teacher to take them off; they are allowed to take them off when outside at break times.
Blazers should be worn as usual unless children have permission to take them off.
Pupils should not wear sports socks when in uniform .
Summer uniform is not compulsory until the second half of the summer term but may be worn earlier.

After competing alongside 68 000 children across the globe and successfully answering a variety of multiple choice problems, Gaku Mori, Nathan Brown, Matthew O’Donoghue, Leo Ramkissoon, Dominic Rolt, Ryan Tan and Nikita Zubkov joined the top 5% highest scores in the Primary Maths Challenge and were invited to take part in the PMC Bonus Round.
Unfortunately, there was a clash with a senior school interview day and Leo, Ryan and Nikita did not take part in the event. The other boys, however, gave their best and made us proud. We have had the best results ever since records began with Nathan, Matthew and Gaku managing a triple win and achieving the highly coveted Primary Mathematics Challenge medal!!
Here is an example of a question the children had to answer during the Bonus Round:
A bag contains 100 raffle tickets in red, white and blue. The ratio of red to white tickets is 5 : 4 and the ratio of white to blue tickets is 8 : 7. What is the smallest number of tickets that would have to be picked to guarantee having selected at least half of one colour?
No calculators allowed!
Well done to all boys involved and, if you think you know the answer, please let us know.

Motorbikes and Bagpipes (Making a Difference)Robert Upton’s latest blog can be found on the School website. The following is a taster:
I think I have hit that age where it is either a motorbike or a set of bagpipes busking on the streets of Edinburgh. My father always told me I would not be a man until I was thirty. Even in the newspaper he wrote, “Happy 18th Birthday, 12 years to go” which obviously cast much debate amongst my friends. Since the publication of this statement I have often reflected on what I have achieved in my life and what impact I have had on the lives of others.

School Shop NewsPlease note that the School Shop will be open on the day before the start of the Summer term, Monday 16th April between 10.00am and 12.30pm. After that it will revert to its normal openings on Mondays and Thursdays from 3.00pm - 5.30pm.
Chess Masterclass will start next term on Tuesday 17th April for Group B.
If you have not already returned your letter to Simon Head confirming your participation please do so by the first day of next term.
The rota for the rest of the term will be sent home in the first week of next term.

Minimus 2018 Mythology Competition
Hopefully, after the bitter cold of the last few weeks, next term will bring us some warmer weather. During sunny weather we strongly recommend that all pupils take measures to protect themselves against exposure to the strong rays of the sun.
Hats should be worn for sport or play and a good spread of colourless sun cream should be applied before the children come to school. Children may bring their own sunscreen to school in a named bottle inside a clear plastic bag. For children in Nursery to Year 4 these should be handed to their form tutor. Children in Years 5 to 8 should give them to Matron.
The school shop stocks a variety of hats. Please note that pupils will not be allowed in to school wearing the brightly coloured zinc sun cream favoured by cricketers!
Sun Safety
We would like to invite pupils in Year 4 to Year 7 to enter the Minimus 2018 Mythology competition.
The theme for Year 4 and Year 5 pupils is the Greek myth of Pyramus and Thisbe.
The theme for Year 6 and Year 7 pupils is ‘The Marriage of Peleus and Thetis’.
Children can choose to illustrate it using either:
1) Art eg. drawing, collage, painting, mosaic, craftwork etc. or
2) Creative writing (in English) eg. poem, play script, prose, retelling of the story in the first person, diary or journal….
Entries have to be the work of one pupil only. If your child would like to take part, get busy over the next few weeks or over the Easter holidays as entries need to be brought in to Mrs Butler no later than Tuesday 17th April. For an idea of what to do, feel free to browse through past winners’ work by visiting the Minimus website.
We are very sorry that our plans for the Year 4 assembly and our Charity Dressing Up Day were thwarted by last week’s snow.
The first Friday of the Summer term, Friday 20th April, will be called ‘World Book Day Revisited!’. On this day we will be holding the postponed Year 4 assembly. Year 4 parents are again invited to join us for this and for refreshments in The Hub afterwards.
We will also be holding our charity dressing up day on the same day. It is open to all children from Nursery upwards but is entirely optional. Children are invited to come to school on that day dressed as any character from a book. In exchange we ask for a donation of £2 which will go to the Yateley Manor charity of the year, Canine Assisted Learning. We ask that children should be dressed appropriately for school: Girls’ tops should be full length and all skirts, shorts and trousers must be of a sensible length. Footwear should also be sensible. Please no team tops, no jewellery (for health and safety reasons) and no hair colouring, make up or face paint.
We are aware that many parents went to a lot of trouble to make or source outfits for our original date in March and that children were disappointed that we had to postpone the event. We look forward to seeing lots of fabulous costumes on our ‘World Book Day Revisited’ next term.
Year 4 Assembly and Charity Dressing Up Day
BBC 500 Word Story CompetitionBBC 500 Words is now an annual fixture in the Yateley Manor calendar. Last year there were 123 000 entries nationally. The English department have been busy editing and submitting entries for this year’s competition and we look forward to seeing how well they have done in the coming weeks.
For the second year, we have run our own in-house competition. The best 12 stories submitted by Year 6, 7 and 8 pupils (10 - 13 age category) were chosen. Mrs Norton-Edwards, Mrs Robinson and Mr Upton met to judge the finalists. Entries were “blind” in that they were word-processed and had no name on them., so no bias could occur! Stories were marked using the guidelines for 500 Words: 10 marks each for originality, plot and language, characterisation and enjoyment. It was a really hard job! After some discussion, and using the tally of the scores, our top four stories were chosen with the bronze winners achieving identical scores. Two of the stories were funny stories about escaping fruits and vegetables and the other two were very descriptive and thought-provoking. Hopefully some other writers have been inspired. by this year’s crop of fantastic tales.Gold Kalescape Eden BerdatSilver Illusions aren’t Illusions Saida SuleymanovaBronze We never Forget Jonathan McFall Smoothie Victims Flora Fergie-Woods

FYMS May Fair
Royal Wedding Events
There are two Royal Wedding competitions which are open to all children and adults. You are invited to create your own version of the Royal Wedding cake. Only one tier is required and it can be any type of cake you choose. There will be rosettes for the winner of each category.
They will also be a Royal Wedding Bouquet competiton in which you can enter flowers or alternative crafts!
May Fair Programme Design Competition
Children are invited to design the front cover of this year’s May Fair programme. Designs should depict something that you enjoy about the Fair. Drawings should be bold so that they can be photocopied and can be coloured in. Please do not use paints.
Please remember to put your name and class on the entry form and hand it to School Reception by Wednesday 18th April
Plans are well underway for the FYMS Annual May Fair on Saturday 12th May. This event is FYMS’ biggest fundraiser and is enjoyed by parents, staff, family and friends. There is always plenty to entertain all members of the community with stalls, bouncy castles, BBQ, face painting, tombola, a plant stall and much more.
This year the Fair will have a Royal Wedding theme and there will be several activities to mark this special occasion.
FYMS are also introducing an arena and will be inviting children from across the whole school to take part in performances during the afternoon.
The May Fair cannot run without the help and support of staff and parents and there are lots of ways you can help:
• Volunteer to help on a stall. Offers of help for an hour or more would be very gratefully received
• Bake some cakes for the Tea Tent. Please note that all donations must be nut free.
• Donate bedding plants, plant pots or hanging baskets for the plant stall.
• Offer donations of Union Jack bunting
Crown and Tiara Parade
To continue the Royal Wedding theme children from Nursery and Pre-Prep are invited to make their own amazing crown or tiara at home and bring to the Fair. There will be a parade for the children so they can show off their spectacular crowns and tiaras.
FYMS have created an information sheet giving information and dates which will be emailed to all parents. It can also be downloaded here. We are sure it will be a fabulous event.
Mufit Day for the May Fair
Children will be invited to come to school on Thursday 3rd May in their own clothes in support of the May Fair. In exchange they will be asked to donate a prize for the May Fair:
• Nursery and Pre-Prep will be asked to donate garden toys such as hoops, water guns, frisbees etc
• Year 4 will be asked to donate jam jars filled with sweets
• Years 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8 will be asked to bring adult bottles.
Cello RecitalThe Beginners Cello group gave a super recital to their parents, teachers and friends. It was amazing to hear how much they have learnt in such a short time.
On Tuesday, we held our Spring Concert in the Fyson Blum Hall for all childen in Years 7 and 8 and ensembles. The groups that took part included Junior Manor Singers, Senior Manor Singers, Intermediate Strings, Senior Strings, Wind Band, Chamber Choir, Miss Callan’s Dance Group and Manor Rocks. They all performed with energy and enthusiasm providing a great evening of entertainment.
Year 7 and 8 presented their music technology projects in small groups to the audience demonstrating their knowledge and confidence. Year 7 mastered multi-track recording of a hip-hop loop using GarageBand on iPads and Year 8 analysed musical apps on the iPad to find the most enjoyable and educational.
For fun we trialled a new digital voting system for both the Year 7 and Year 8 work. The winner of the Year 7 rap was Monster Wow! and the favourite musical app was Musical Me just four votes ahead of GarageBand
The evening culminated in a “surprise” performance by all the children of a Gospel medley consisting of Swing Low, When the Saints Go Marching In and I Want to Sing!
A fantastic impromptu performance that finished off a superb evening celebrating music.
Well done to Years 7 and 8 and to all the musicians and singers who took part in the concert.

Very good effort and some extremely good football was played as the U11A Squad travelled to the regional finals held at the John Lyon School in London. The event was played in a round-robin format with the winner gaining a place at the National Finals. Despite a valiant effort the boys finished 3rd overall. Really good play boys, well done.

IAPS Ski ChampionshipsTwelve pupils from the Ski Team were selected to represent the school at last week’s IAPS Ski Championships in Italy. The team flew to Italy on the Sunday and then, after two days of training and qualifying races, the Championship race took place on a beautiful, sunny Wednesday. All children successfully completed the giant slalom course and at the awards’ evening on Thursday, the team learned that the U13 skiers (Ella Cox, Queralt Garrigos-Camos, Edward Houghton and Victoria Paddison) had collectively finished first in their category! In addition, William Mitchell (5ESB) finished 2nd in his age category and 4th overall in the whole of the plate competition. All children are to be congratulated on their success in the competition and on a season of training and teamwork. These twelve skiers were encouraged and supported by all Ski Team participants and everyone is already looking forward to next year!Team: Ella Cox, Queralt Garrigos-Camos, Edward Houghton, Victoria Paddison, Ella MacDougall, Lillian Scarr, Jamie Sheffield, William Mitchell, Oliver Waddington, Albert Pearce, Harry Ayton-Judd, Luca Norris

Cricket Equipment
House Public Speaking Continued
Please note that boys do not need to have their own cricket equipment for the cricket season. The school will provide all that is necessary. Many boys, however, do like their own equipment and this is up to parents.
The school white polo shirt is required for lessons and can be used for cricket, athletics and tennis. Trainers can be used for cricket matches, but must be mainly white. Proper cricket shoes are ideal but not compulsory.
Boys who are in an A or B team for cricket must wear the school cricket shirt for matches which is available from the school shop. White cricket trousers are also needed for A and B matches.
No club kit is allowed in school matches. School cricket jumpers and cricket hats are also available from the school shop.
Our assumption is that children stay at Yateley Manor until the end of Year 8. The usual term’s notice (ie before Tuesday 17th April) is required if this is not the case.
Important Notice
Parents are reminded that as published on the back of the last few school calendars, that there will be a staff training day on Friday 4th May.
There will be no school for children in Prep, Pre-Prep or Nursery on that day.
Children will return to school on Tuesday 8th May after the Bank Holiday on Monday 7th.
Staff Training - School closed on Friday 4th May
