Welcome to the July Issue
Well, summer is finally here and the country’s thoughts are turning towards the Summer Olympics. We are lucky to be in such close proximity to one of the 2012 Olympic Venues with Hadleigh farm playing host to the Mountain Biking events on the 11th and 12th August. The venue is expecting over 20,000 visitors over the 2 days!
Our Olympic article on page 6 looks at the
history of some of the symbols associated with
the Olympic Games. We also have a lovely
article over 2 pages - page 8 and 16 in which
June Collison shares her memories of Canvey
Island in the 1950s. If you enjoy reading
people’s memories of Canvey Island, this
month we are offering a £2 discount on our
book “Your Canvey Memories” - see page 17
for more details or visit
www.yourcanveymemories.co.uk
If you have a business based in the local area
or serving local residents, Your Canvey and
Your Benfleet & Hadleigh magazines both
offer an affordable and effective way to
advertise. We have been publishing our quality
magazines for 5 years in July so we are here to
stay! We find that many local residents keep
hold of their magazine and use it as a useful
reference guide to the area. To keep our
advertising costs as low as possible, we
deliver to half of the Island one month and
the other half the next. We deliver all the
magazines ourselves with the help of family
so we can give you a 100% guarantee that the
magazines are being delivered! We can also
include your own leaflets with our magazines
if you prefer.
You can find our full Media Pack on our
website at www.yourlocalmags.co.uk or for
more information call Angela on 01268

If you have missed a copy of Your Canvey ,
you can find back issues and an archive of past
articles included in the magazine on our
website:

The Olympic Games
Excitement is really beginning to build now in the run up to the 2012 Olympics. The Summer Olympic Games will be held in London from 27th July to 12th August 29th August to 9th September. There are many symbols of the games and here is a brief look at their origins.
The Rings
The Olympic Rings are five interlocking rings
that stand for the five continents - Africa,
America, Asia, Australia and Europe and the
athletes from around the world. The colours of
the rings are blue, yellow, black, green, and
red respectively. They were chosen because at
least one of these colours is found on the flag
of every nation.
The symbol was originally designed in 1912
by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of
the modern Olympic Games and was first used
at the 1920 Antwerp Olympics.
The Flag
On the Olympic flag, the rings appear on a
white background. At the Olympic Games, the
flag is brought into the stadium during the
opening ceremony. After its arrival, the flag is
hoisted up the flagpole and it must fly in the
stadium during the whole of the Games. When
the flag is lowered at the closing ceremony, it
signals the end of the Games.
Motto
The motto of the Olympic Games is “Swifter,
Higher, Stronger.” These three words
encourage the athlete to give his or her best
during competition and to view this effort as a
victory in itself. In other words, the most
important thing is not to win but to take part!
The Flame
The Olympic flame is one of the best-known
features of the Games. From the moment the
flame is lit to the moment it goes out, a very
precise ritual is laid down :
The lighting: In memory of the Olympic
Games’ origins, the flame is lit in Olympia,
Greece, some months before the opening of
the Games.
The relay route: The torch is carried by relay
from Olympia to the host city of the Games.
Arrival at the stadium: The day of the
opening of the Games, the flame enters the
stadium. With the lighting of the cauldron by
the last relay runner the flame is transferred
from the torch to the place where it will
continue to burn for the entire length of the
Games. The flame is extinguished on the final
day of the Games at the closing ceremony.
Mascots
Since the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble,
France, the Olympic Games have had a
mascot, usually an animal native to the area
or occasionally human figures representing
the cultural heritage. The first major mascot
in the Olympic Games was in the 1980
Summer Olympics in Moscow. Nowadays,
most of the merchandise aimed at young
people focuses on the mascots, rather than the
Olympic flag or organization logos.

Canvey Memories - June Collison
“My parents were introduced to Canvey Island as teenagers. My grandparents saved hard throughout the year and brought their family of 3 girls and 1 boy to spend a week or a fortnight at a bungalow wither at Wintergardens or Newlands.
When my parents married, they saved up
enough to purchase a plot of land in 1933 and
an uncle who was a carpenter helped my
father to build a bungalow in May Avenue.
That is how my sister Eileen and I came to
spend our holidays on Canvey Island and later
move there permanently.
At the time of the flood, I was 16 and a half
years old and working for A.R McKay &
Sons Builders Merchants at Leigh Beck. Mr
Stoddard, the General Manager, spent a good
part of that fateful night on the telephone
negotiating a contract with the Essex River
Board to supply hardcore for use on the
unmade roads to enable the sea walls which
were breached to become accessible. A small
shed was erected on the front car park of the
Red Cow Public House (later renamed King
Canute.)
Every morning I cycled from May Avenue at
6am to start my day by relieving one of my
male colleagues who had been working
through the night. Our job was to write the
dockets for the many lorry drivers who came
from all over the place with hardcore and
direct them to the roads as per the River
Board’s instructions. This operation went on
day and night for some considerable time.
When everything was back to normal after the
floods, I remember an incident that took
place. A crowd of young men and girls
arrived on Mopeds and tempers flared
between them and some of the local lads at
the Pavillion cafe at the seafront end of May
Avenue. An arrangement was made that they
would settle their dispute the following
weekend. The police got to hear of this and
were well prepared for the trouble that was
forthcoming. Unfortunately, one of the
policemen was injured early on as someone
from the opposing side crept up from behind
and pulled his cape which was linked at the
throat and nearly throttled him. Still, because
of the police presence the fight, which might
have been worse, was short lived and some of
the groups decided to abandon theri mopeds
and leave on buses to return the next day for
their bikes. Obviously, they didn’t know
about the swing bridge as the police waited
there for the buses with the bridge open and
caught the lot as they tried to escape!

ambulances or fire engines ro get
through the traffic without too much
delay. Once again, the bridge played a
big part as the Benfleet Yacht Club,
whose headquarters was an old boat
moored near the bus stop on the
Benfleet side, always needed the
bridge to be opened so they could sail
through. As boats had precedence over
traffic, this happened quite a few times
on a busy Sunday evening.
I left Canvey in 1967 but returned for
a visit in 2010. So much has changed that I
hardly recognised it as the place where my
sister and I wandered across fields with very
few houses and lots of unmade roads.
Nevertheless, it was a day full of happy
memories.
Does anyone remember Harry George the
Plumber commandeering a fairy cycle from a
child at the top of May Avenue when the siren
went for the part time fire service doing his
jacket up as he tried to keep his balance? Or
Mr & Mrs Eaton who ran the printers and
stationers at the top of May Avenue winning
the Dunmow Flitch half of a pig for not
having an argument for a whole year?”
More Canvey Memories - June Collison Cont’d
The Admiral Jellicoe
Much of my leisure time was spent dancing at
the Admiral Jellicoe.The landlord and
landlady were Mr & Mrs Jennings and nearly
every Saturday night, and sometimes during
the week, my friend Phyllis and I enjoyed a
twirl around the dance floor.
Sea Rangers also took up a lot of my time and
the Skipper was Madge Moor who was also
the pharmacist at Venables the Chemist in the
High Street. One event we took part in was
the centenary of the Chapman lighthouse. We
rowed from our moorings at Canvey Yacht
Club in our 22ft Whaler round the lighthouse
to take part in the celebrations.
Early 1950s
In the early 50s, Canvey was a very
popular holiday resort and day trippers
arrived mostly by car or motorbikes
with side cars. The only way on and
off the Island was Long Road and the
traffic was one long queue from the
beach to Benfleet. The police had
every available officer and Special
Constable out - one of them was a well
known local figure “Cockle Jack.” A
plan was worked out so they had gas
every so many cars both ways to
enable the buses to keep to their
timetable and also if necessary enable Traffic on Long Road early 1950s

bizarre and unusual large murals and were
individually named. One room was known
as the “Aquarium Room” whilst another was
named the “Hell Room.” Some very rare
photographs of these rooms can be seen on
the Canvey Community Archive website at
www.canveyisland.org.
During 1938, the Hotel Ozonia was
advertised as having 60 rooms. Each room
was equipped with a cooking area, sink and
bathroom. There was also an “excellent
restaurant” and a dance hall with games.
Each room or flatlet for 2 people would cost
31/6d a week or bed and breakfast was 4/6d.
The hotel was never really commercially
successful. This was mainly due to the
outbreak of World War 2 when the tourist
trade dropped considerably. After the war, it
was purchased by Lt Col H.P. Fielder who
used it for housing people. It was eventually
left empty and derelict before finally being
acquired by the Canvey Council and was
demolished to make way for new flats.
Older residents may remember the Hotel Ozonia which was located at the bottom of Seaview Road by the Sea Wall. It was built as a temperance hotel in 1936. Temperance hotels were common in Australia in the 1880s but they were also found, to a lesser extent, later in the UK. A Temperance Hotel was simply one that did not serve alcohol.
The Hotel Ozonia was financed by a wealthy
lady who employed esteemed architect Mr
Ernest George Trobridge to design and build
the hotel. Ozonia was three storeys high and
when it was originally built, it had a thatched
roof. This was later replaced with something
more conventional and practical. The exterior
of the first floor had a cedar shingle covering
and the top floor had dormer windows.
An artist was commissioned to paint the
interior and each room was decorated
differently. Some of the rooms showed
beautiful gardens but others boasted fairly

QR Codes - Hints & Tips You might have seen codes like this popping up everywhere with no explanation to the uninitiated as to what we are supposed to do with them!
So far this week, I have seen them in
advertising leaflets delivered through the
door, in the Evening Standard newspaper
and on an advertisement hung up in the local
shopping centre. So what are they?
QR Code is an abbreviation for “Quick
Response Code” and is the trademark for a
type of matrix barcode first designed for the
automotive industry. The code consists of
black modules (square dots) arranged in a
square pattern on a white background. The
information encoded can be a web site URL,
telephone number or business card
information.
To read the information in the QR Code, you
need to download and install a special
program called a “QR Code Reader” onto
your laptop (which also needs a web camera)
or an app onto your mobile phone. When
you run the program/app, you simply point
the camera at the QR Code, position the
image within an onscreen grid and it will
automatically guide you to the website URL.
Download a Laptop “QR Code Reader”
You will need to do a Google Search for a
QR Code reader - download it and then
install the program onto your laptop. Look
for the “Quickmark QR Reader” which is
free for personal use and can be used to read
QR codes or generate one for your own website
URL for advertising purposes.
Download a QR Code Reader for your iPhone, iPad or Android Phone
Do a Google Search on your phone or iPad for
“QR Code Reader App” and download the one
from Warrior (this one worked for me.) To use,
you simply run the App and point the camera at
the QR Code and
poition it inside the
on-screen grid - the
App will probably
“Beep” and then
load the relevant
website.
Try it out on the
codes on this page!
