Once again early turnovers haunted the Penguins. The Bison jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the first quarter with 10 points coming off of turnovers. NDSU took a 7-0 lead when Chase Morlock scored on a 71-yard touchdown run on a third-and-1 play at the NDSU 29 midway through the first period. YSU then committed two turnovers in a span of four plays that gave the Bison the football at the Penguins’ 25 and 15-yard lines. NDSU converted those scores into 10 points on a 36-yard Cam Pederson field goal and a 15-yard pass from Easton Stick to Jeff Illies. From that point YSU moved the ball at times but was only able to make a field goal, a 32-yarder by Zak Kennedy in the second quarter. NDSU put the game out of reach on a seven-yard touchdown run by Lance Dunn in the fourth. Southern Illinois (3-6, 1-5) picked up its first conference win of the season beating South Dakota 35-28 in Carbondale last Saturday. The Salukis led 21-7 at halftime and 35-14 in the fourth quarter before the Coyotes made things interesting with two touchdowns in the final 7:30. SIU racked up 574 yards of total offense in the game as Sam Straub threw for 339 yards and had a pair of touchdown passes. Straub also ran for a team-high 68 yards and the game-deciding rushing touchdown with 12:11 left in the contest. The Penguins-Salukis series has featured some down-to-the-wire contests. Last year in Carbondale the Guins lead 31-20 with just over five minutes left before the Salukis rallied to force overtime. SIU sent the game to overtime on a 19-yard field goal by Austin Johnson with six seconds remaining. In OT, Mark Iannotti found Israel Lamprakes on a 24-yard score to give the Salukis a 38-31 lead. With YSU facing a fourth-and-two at the SIU 6-yard line, TB Jody Webb’s pass in the end zone was incomplete on the final play. laSt tIME OUt: NDSU 24, YSU 3 YSU suffered a disappointing 24-3 loss at fourth-ranked North Dakota State last Satur-day at the Fargodome. KELLY HAS TOP GAME Senior LB Jaylin Kelly had a standout perfor-mance against North Dakota State. Kelly was credited with 13 tackles in the contest, includ-ing nine solo stops. Even more impressive in the game is that NDSU had 37 non-scoring plays, meaning Kelly’s nine solo stops gave him almost 25 percent of YSU’s tackles.

tOWNSEND WIth BIG cONtESt Junior WR Darien Townsend caught a career-high seven passes for 98 yards in the loss at North Dakota State. Townsend leads the Penguins with 19 recep-tions and 289 yards. He is averaging 15.2 yards per reception and is tied for the team lead with two receiving touchdowns.

LOW DRIvE TIME The YSU defense has allowed four drives of 70-or-more yards in the past seven contests (two by NDSU, first quarter at SDSU and first quarter by Indiana State). In the last 83 drives, the opposition has had just 12 drives that have marched 50-or-more yards. In the last five games, a span of 56 drives, YSU has allowed just eight drives to go for 50-plus yards.

FEW RUShING tDS allOWED The YSU defense has surrendered just three rushing touchdown this year. The Penguins did not yield a rushing score for the first six contests before allowing a rushing touchdown in the first quarter at South Dakota State. NDSU had two rushing scores against the Guins this past Saturday. YSU has allowed three rushing TDs in 36 quar-ters played so far this season. The Penguins and Colgate are tied in the FCS for fewest rushing touchdowns allowed this season. The Raiders have played eight games this year. Last year, YSU allowed 20 rushing touch-downs, including 14 in the conference portion of the schedule.

aPPROachING SacK REcORD YSU has registered 34 sacks on the season. Impressively 12 different players have at least one sack while six have at least two. DE Avery Moss and preseason All-American Derek Rivers both lead the way with nine each. DT Savon Smith is third on the team with five sacks while LB Armand Dellovade, LB Jamar Pinnock and DT Donald Mesier each have two. The combination of Moss, Rivers and Smith give the starting D-line 23 sacks.

FOURTH QUARTER COMEBACKS The Penguins have rallied for fourth-quarter wins in each of their last three victories. YSU beat Illinois State 20-6 after trailing 6-3 in the fourth, the Penguins beat UNI 14-10 after trail-ing 10-0 in the final period and against Indiana State the Guins overcame a 10-6 deficit to win 13-10. While the comebacks have been ones to remember, YSU has had three different quar-terbacks play in the fourth quarters of those games. (Ricky Davis vs. Illinois State, Nathan Mays vs. UNI and Hunter Wells vs. Indiana State).

GOING tO thE WEllS A familiar face has started for the Penguins the past two games in junior QB Hunter Wells. Wells, who made his season debut on Oct. 29 against Indiana State, had a season-best 222 yards completing 18-of-27 passes at North Dakota State. In his first game of the 2016 season he com-pleted 13-of-26 passes for 101 yards and had two rushes for a net of 11 yards against the Sycamores. His 14-yard run in the contest was the longest of his career. Last year he started all 11 games for YSU. In 2015 he completed 159-of-291 passes for 1,975 yards and 13 touchdowns. In his YSU career, he has thrown for 4,070 yards and 27 touchdowns while completing 311-of-546 passes.

POWEll EMERGES IN SEcONDaRY Junior SS Jayln Powell was in the starting line for the Penguins at NDSU. Powell played instead of Jameel Smith against the Bison. Powell was credited with six total tackles, in-cluding five solo stops, and had a pass breakup. He has 14 of his 26 total tackles the last two games after a career-best eight, including seven solos, against Indiana State.

DELLOvADE A KEY STOPPER Sophomore LB Armand Dellovade has con-tinued to be a key figure for the Penguins. He leads the squad with a career-high 60 tackles after a seven-tackle effort at North Da-kota State. In conference play he has 46 total tackles, highlighted by a career-high 11 stops against South Dakota State on Oct. 22. He has 29 solo tackles in MVFC play. Dellovade has had five-or-more tackles in each of the last eight games.

Through nine games, Rivers has nine sacks and 11 quarterback hurries while Moss has nine sacks and seven QB hurries. Moss has 37 total tackles, 24 of which are solos, while Rivers has 26 tackles on the year, 23 of which are solos.

YSU opened the campaign in impressive fashion beating Duquesne 45-10 in its sea-son opener at Stambaugh Stadium. The Penguins jumped out to a 24-3 lead behind first-time starting QB Ricky Davis. After the Dukes scored just before halftime, the Guins outscored Duquesne 21-0 in the second half. Davis had a solid starting debut rushing for 74 yards on 10 carries while completing 12-of-16 passes for 187 yards and three scores. Two of those touchdowns went to Darien Townsend. Davis and Townsend connected on a 49-yard pass early in the contest before the two hooked up again on a 36-yard toss late in the second quarter. Martin Ruiz, Shane Kuhn and Tevin Mc-Caster all had rushing scores while Stefan Derrick caught a touchdown in his first game as a Penguin. The Guins amassed 610 yards of total offense while holding Duquesne to 222, including just 34 on the ground.

The Penguins built a 24-0 lead and went on to earn an impressive 38-6 win over Rob-ert Morris at Stambaugh Stadium despite a 66-minute weather delay in the first quarter. A splendid defensive effort and just enough offense in the nick of time helped lead Youngstown State to a memorable 14-10 win over UNI last Saturday night at Stambaugh Stadium. With injuries forcing the Penguins’ first and second sting quarterbacks out of the game, redshirt freshman Nathan Mays helped engineer two scoring drives for the come-from-behind victory. Trailing 10-0 midway through third quarter, YSU went on a 22-play drive that was capped with a one-yard run by Tevin McCaster with 11:47 left in the game. With 28 seconds left, TB Martin Ruiz scored from a yard out to give YSU its first lead of the game at 14-10. Ruiz finished with 100 yards for the game. UNI had one final chance, but a hail mary throw by Eli Dunne from the YSU 49-yard line was knocked down with no time remaining.

The Penguins lost 24-10 to the Jackrabbits last Saturday at new-look Dana J. Dykehouse Stadium. YSU was never really able to get on track after allowing two touchdowns in the first four minutes of the game. Brady Mengarelli’s two-yard scoring run 2:48 into the contest gave SDSU a 7-0 lead. Following a YSU turnover, and just 70 sec-onds later, the Jackrabbits went in front 14-0 after a four-yard pass from Taryn Christion to Connor Landberg. The teams exchanged field goals as YSU trailed 17-3 at halftime. SDSU extended its lead to 24-3 on a three-yard touchdown reception by Jake Wieneke. Late in the contest, Tevin McCaster scored for the Penguins on a two-yard run for the final margin. SDSU had 14 points off two YSU turnovers.

The Penguins overcame a 10-point deficit, backed by an impressive defensive effort and a key special teams touchdown, for a come-from-behind 13-10 win over Indiana State. Indiana State went on top 10-0 in the first quarter following a 29-yard field goal by Jerry Nunez and a nine-yard touchdown pass from Isaac Harker to Robert Nunez. YSU hunkered down defensively after those scores, and Zak Kennedy made a pair of second-quarter field goals (23 and 31 yards) to keep the contest close. With just over nine minutes left in the game, Darien Townsend returned a punt 79 yards for a touchdown, which turned out to be the game-winning score.

YSU suffered a disappointing 24-3 loss at fourth-ranked North Dakota State last Saturday at the Fargodome. Once again early turnovers haunted the Penguins. The Bison jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the first quarter with 10 points com-ing off of turnovers. The Guins had three points on four trips inside the red zone in the game. NDSU put the game out of reach on a seven-yard touchdown run by Lance Dunn in the fourth.
